Mission The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission exists to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the district through the development of recreation programs that promote a lifestyle of wellness, physical activities and cultural experiences for all ages. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Recreation District The Irmo Chapin Recreation District was formed in 1969 to serve community members living in the Lexington County portion of School District Five. ICRC has earned a reputation for program and facility excellence and has attracted participants from surrounding counties. Because their tax dollars support recreation services, ICRC district residents receive discounted rates for programs and facility rentals (excluding Saluda Shoals Park) upon proof of residency.

New customers should call the park during business hours to establish an account before registering online. Registration is also accepted at each of the parks or by phone. Registration is confirmed upon payment. Because many classes fill up quickly, register one week before the class date so we can make class enrollment decisions. We will accept registration as long as there is space available. Fees Activity and event fees in this guide are subject to change without notice, prior to registration. Weather: Many of ICRC’s activities are held in venues that make them tentative based on weather conditions. Participants are responsible for checking to see if games have been cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled. ICRC ID Policy: Visitors to Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks are required to present an ICRC ID with associated fees for admission to open gym, fitness and weight areas, racquetball courts, walking/running track and other unsupervised areas. Anyone age 6 and older must have a valid ICRC ID for admission. ID cards are valid for one year. Cancellation/Refund Policy: Refund requests must be received in writing no later than three days prior to the start of the program. A $5 service fee is charged. No refunds or transfers will be made once the activity has begun and certain activities, such as trips and special events, define a date after which no refunds will be made. Please check individual program requirements for guidelines. Full refunds/credits will be given if the program is cancelled by ICRC. Physical Requirements: Unless otherwise stated, activities are open to beginners and do not require previous experience. Average physical condition is all that is needed for most programs. Please call for information about accessibility or concerns about physical ability required for participation.

 

Assumption of Risk: All activities, including those offered by ICRC, have inherent risks which include personal injury or property loss. Prior to participation, you will be required to sign a form which acknowledges your understanding and acceptance of these risks. Parents or guardians must sign for youth ages 17 and under. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety, and you may choose to withdraw from an activity at any time you feel your safety is a concern.

Exit Piney Grove Road and turn left. Proceed approximately 1.5 miles to St. Andrews Road. Turn right, then left at the first traffic light. Saluda Shoals Park will be 1.5 miles on your left. Meeting Facilities The Environmental Education Center The Environmental Center features a 100-seat auditorium, two classrooms/meeting rooms, an Exhibit Hall and a 3,776 SF deck. Picnic shelter rentals are also available. Picnic Shelters Saluda Shoals Park also offers six shelters that accommodate 24 to 250 people. Shelters are available for rent from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Shelters are equipped with lights, fans and grills. Parking is available at each shelter, restrooms are nearby and all are connected to the Greenway Trail and other walking trails. The two largest shelters, Cattail and River Birch, each accommodate 250 guests. The River Birch shelter is located near the beautiful Saluda River and the Cattail Shelter is directly off the boardwalk in the Saluda Shoals Wetland Preserve. Call 213-2053 for reservations.

River Center The River Center is a versatile, full-service conference center offering over 5,000 SF of meeting space. With its soaring two-story lobby, stone fireplaces, and bright spacious meeting rooms, the River Center can accommodate both small and large business meetings and social functions. A wedding gazebo is available for outdoor weddings. Call Jason White at 213-2026 for reservations and information. Real Team Challenge Course Bring your team to Saluda Shoals Park for a unique and effective team building experience. The Real Team Challenge course, for adults 18 years and older, is a series of challenging but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. All challenges are lead by our trained, professional staff. Healthy outdoor recreation, team building and fun are key components of the Challenge Course Program. For more information, call Alex Beck at 213-2054. The Saluda Shoals Park Train The SSP train is available for a two-hour rental to bring excitement to your event or child’s birthday party. Both adults and children can ride along selected trails through beautiful Saluda Shoals Park in the brightly painted train! Capacity 20 riders. Call 213-2053 to reserve the train for your next party. Fee: $144/2 hours. Pony Parties Arrange for a pony to be at your child’s next event! Our experienced equestrian provider will bring a pony to the park for an hour of assisted walking time. Party guests will take a one-hour horse drawn carriage ride through the beautiful park. Rides will depart from the birthday party venue. This program is perfect for ages two and up. George Bryan Pre-School Golf Each week the theme will be helping preschoolers and their parents get acquainted with golf. Etiquette, playing on the course and putting will be the curriculum. FUN will be the top priority! Golf clubs will be provided. We suggest NO last minute club purchases; club fitting is part of our curriculum. Rain or Shine! Indoor options are available. George Bryan Junior Golf Freshman: This class is for the beginner and teaches basic fundamentals in the full swing and short game. There is a special emphasis at this level on golf course and facility etiquette. Sophomore/Senior: This class is for the junior with some experience, to advanced competitive golfer. Students will refine the fundamentals of the full swing and short game while emphasizing the value of quality practice techniques and course management. The mental approach to the game is developed, including visualization and the importance of setting goals. In addition, the student’s competitive edge is sharpened in preparation for tournament play. Meals are delivered by Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park volunteers by 1:00 p.m. Monday–Friday. Nutrition Sites A hot nutritious meal and social or physical activity is provided for older adults Monday – Friday at Crooked Creek and Seven Oaks Parks from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Physical Chairapy Sit down and enjoy a great workout. This class is offered at both nutrition sites twice weekly. Transportation Transportation to nutrition sites, medical facilities, and other necessary appointments is available to older adults in our service area based on identified needs. Loan Closet The Ruth Browne Memorial Loan Closet loans wheelchairs, walkers, and other durable medical equipment to older adults on a short-term basis. Donations of durable medical equipment are welcome at both Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park. Case Management Caseworkers are available at both Crooked Creek Park and Seven Oaks Park to help older adults and their families identify needs and interests. Our caseworkers will assist them in gaining access to programs, services, or benefits needed.

Pinochle Come join a newly formed Pinochle group at Crooked Creek Park. Many members have not played in 30–40 plus years so a current level of knowledge is not required. Project LOVE Project LOVE is looking for volunteers to spend approximately one hour per week with students sharing their hobbies, interests, and/or stories. Project LOVE begins in late September/early October and runs through April. Examples of Project LOVE lessons include sewing, gardening, etiquette, various crafts, woodworking, quilting, geography/travels, life stories/history, stamp collecting, etc. For more information, contact Dena Long at 345-6181 or dlong@icrc.net. AKTION Club AKTION Club is a community service group for young adults with special needs. The club’s mission is to provide participants with an opportunity to develop leadership skills and serve their community. AKTION club meets the second Monday of each month at Seven Oaks Park at 6:00 p.m. and is sponsored by the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club.

Carowinds Trip The summer is almost over so grab your friends for one more day of excitement! We will go to Carowinds for the day to enjoy theme park adventure at its best. Super Summer Camp Super Summer Camp is for children with special needs and their siblings. The camp offers indoor and outdoor activities including crafts, games, canoeing and much more. Campers will spend one day at Saluda Shoals Park and take one field trip per week. Bring a bag lunch each day. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Participants must be moderately independent in all activities of daily living. There is a 1:3 staff to child ratio. If closer supervision is necessary, a personal assistant must be provided for attendance. The Sweet Life The Sweet Life is a program designed for young adults with disabilities to get together with their peers and enjoy a dessert followed by a leisurely stroll. The program fees include transportation, dessert and drink. In July, visit Yoghut and stroll the on the Riverwalk. In August, enjoy Dairy Queen followed by a walk through Columbiana Mall. Saluda Shoals Park Charley’s Back Yard Treasure Hunt Come to Saluda Shoals Park and pick up a Charley’s Backyard Treasure Hunt map. Explore the park to find treasures like the silver fish and beautiful Corley Island. Geocaching Look for geocaches hidden at Saluda Shoals Park (SSP) Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park using a handheld GPS device. Each quarter, a cache is designated as a prize cache. Find it and provide proof to receive a prize. There are numerous caches in the parks that have been placed by Geocachers and Park Rangers. The Geocaching coordinates for the various caches are on www.geocaching.com or at the Environmental Education Center front desk. If you would like to place caches in the parks, call Alex Beck at 213-2054 for a cache application. GPS etiquette is to never take items without leaving items. Real Team Challenge Course The “Real Team” Challenge course is a series of difficult but achievable mental and physical activities designed to improve the performance of your group. Off-Site Team Initiatives Our experienced staff is available to conduct Team Building Initiatives at your place of business! No heavy apparatus are required. Team Adventure This exciting alternative to the usual team building programs gives teams everything they need to navigate their way around the park, completing different objectives as they go. Brownie and Girl Scout Workshops Enjoy a one and a half hour nature workshop at Saluda Shoals Park. Brownies can complete steps to help them earn the Senses badge and the Hiker badge. Juniors can earn the Camper Badge, the Animal Habitats Badge and the Geocacher Badge. Scout leaders and chaperones are free of charge. Scout Camping Scout groups are invited to camp overnight at Saluda Shoals Park. Camping adventures will run on Friday from 5:00 p.m.– Saturday 10:00 a.m. The maximum number of participants in the group should not exceed twenty including chaperones. No more than ten tents are permissible. For more information call the Environmental Education Center at 803-213-2053. Environmental Education School Programs The Environmental Education Center at Saluda Shoals Park provides educational programs for all grade levels. The programs cover Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Programs are inquiry based and are developed to address the South Carolina Education Science Standards. The programs have three components: 1) a classroom or outdoor laboratory lesson to establish the principle; 2) an interactive component including a visit to the Exhibit Hall or net dipping and specimen collecting for the Wetland Preserve Programs 3) “immersion learning” nature walk to a specific habitat All programs include pre-visit and post-visit activity sheets to help teachers prepare for the unit lessons. Each classroom holds up to 25 children. Teachers must be with the class. Additional chaperones are welcome. Arrangements can be made for schools bringing more than fifty students. History Programs Interpretive History Programs are South Carolina Standards based and cover a variety of elementary school topics. Students will be able to compare and contrast past and present daily life, use maps and reproduction tools to follow settlers’ migration route to the colonies. Students will also role play, hear stories of how children worked in the cotton mills, and learn how farmers living on the Saluda River operated their flat boats to transport people across the river. ICRC trips are designed specifically for individuals 50 years old and older, but are open to anyone 18 years old and older. Anyone under 18 years must be approved by the Recreation Commission prior to registration. All fees must be paid at the time of registration! Purple Martin Cruise Climb aboard the Southern Patriot for a phenomenon you have to see to believe. This 2 ½ hour cruise takes you out to historic Bomb Island, where hundreds of thousands of birds circle and roost on the largest Purple Martin sanctuary in North America. During this cruise, hear narration about the Purple Martins and the historic significance of Bomb Island which was used for bombing practice by Jimmy Doolittle prior to his raid on Tokyo during WWII. Congaree Bluffs Trail Hike Join us as we hike the Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve in St. Matthews, SC. The preserve contains three distinct types of habitat: bottomland hardwood forest, ravines featuring mixed hardwood forest, and upland planted-pine forest. Trails range from easy to strenuous. The Ravine-Walk Trail takes you through a forest of American beech, oak, hickory, and other hardwoods. The Bluff-River Walk Trail winds through the beautiful bottomland hardwood forest to the Congaree River and the base of the rocky Congaree River bluffs. The observation deck provides views of the Congaree River and miles of pristine swamp and bottomlands. After the hike, enjoy a Dutch treat lunch at a local restaurant. Saluda Splash Closes for the Season! Saluda Splash will close to the public for the season on Mon., Sept. 3, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Saluda Shoals Park. Splash & Dash Adventure Race This teamwork challenge race combines mountain biking (5 miles), trail running (2.5 miles), and paddling (1 mile). All distances are approximate, the exact order, distance and route of the events are not revealed until the day of the race. Teams must complete each section of the course together and cross the finish line as a team! Format: 3-person teams (age 18 and older). Co-ed, all male or all female. Equipment: Each team must provide the following equipment for each team member: Mountain bike, helmet, running gear, and equipment for the transition area (water bottles, ice, food, first aid kit...etc.) Matching team shirts are encouraged! Canoes, paddles, life jackets and race bibs will be provided. Sat., Aug. 25, 2012, 8:30 a.m. Saluda Shoals Park. Fee: $75 per team before August 10, 2012; $100 per team on or after August 11, 2012.
