des 115 letterforms + typography process manual by irona lee
project 1: minimal letterforms taking a closer look at the form and function of letterforms
step 1: thumbnail sketching in this process, we got to choose one of seven different typefaces, such as centaur, friz quadrata, garamond, memphis, univers, bodoni, and helvetica, and used trace paper to trace uppercase and lowercase letters of different fonts. we explored how much of the letter could be subtracted before it lost its character and legibility.

step 2: digital drawing using illustrator, we picked our top five favorite thumbnail sketches and refined them on the computer. out of the five, we narrowed it down to one best design that not only shows the characteristics of the letterform, but also visually carries the audience through the four squares successfully.

project 2: type hierarchy studies use a provided set of information to explore compositional alternatives. including: Symmetry+Asymmetry Geometric+Organic Rhythmic+Static Grouping+Isolation Contrast Texture Proximity Grid structures used variations of univers for all designs.
step 1: mock layouts in order to get a good idea of the layout and composition that we wanted to create with the given texts, we drew grids on ten by ten trace paper sheetsand glued down the texts while also maintaining alignment, hierarchy, and order.
step 2: digital layouts using indesign, we refined and expanded on our trace paper mock ups to create overall functional and visually appealing layouts of the provided texts and their variations.
