Andrew Messick President & Chief Executive Officer The IRONMAN Group
On behalf of our entire IRONMAN team, it brings me immense pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission in stunning St. George, Utah. It is a tremendous honor to have earned a spot for the ironman World Championship and we are pleased to have you join us; especially those who have patiently waited years for the chance to compete at this event. After an extended absence of our pinnacle event, we are grateful to the Utah Sports Commission and Greater Zion for taking on the important hosting duties as we collectively celebrate your achievements. While this edition of the IRONMAN World Championship will look different in a new setting, it will continue to build upon the great tradition of past events and be an experience unlike any other you have had. Whether you have raced in this striking and austere backdrop or will be stepping foot into St. George for the very first time, we think you will agree this supportive community and iconic destination creates a sought-after world class environment for athletes. As you prepare to take on this unique and challenging course, we hope you bask in the beauty of one of the premier endurance event locations in the world. While the course is a difficult test worthy of all who toe the start line, this event is intended to also be a celebration of what you have already accomplished as you chase your continued goals and personal finish line. Embrace the year ahead and honor the spirit of aloha in the Land of Endurance as you prepare to race. On behalf of the IRONMAN family, we wish you a safe and successful race and cannot wait to welcome you across that finish line as you take your place in the annals of IRONMAN history. See you at the finish line!
Diana Bertsch Senior Vice President, World Championship Events The IRONMAN Group
Welcome to the Land of Endurance as we celebrate Kumukahi, “A New Beginning.” On behalf of all of us at IRONMAN, welcome to the stunning community of St. George, Utah for the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission. Our gracious hosts in Greater Zion and at the Utah Sports Commission, have risen to the occasion as we bring to you the 2021 edition of the IRONMAN World Championship. After over two years of anticipation, we cannot wait to welcome you to a truly special experience here in this beautiful Southwest United States setting. As the sun rises in the east and we embrace a new horizon, the Hawaiian word Kumukahi, “A New Beginning,” carries us into the Land of Endurance. No matter where we are in the world, Kumukahi shows us each new day provides the possibility for optimism and excitement as we reflect on our past and acknowledge the value of all we have learned. Much like the Hawaiian Islands, the Land of Endurance and its rugged terrain was formed by the flow of ancient seas and molten lava. From the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert, to the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and Pine Valley Mountains, Greater Zion is a converging point producing stunning scenery as far as the eye can see. Much like these terrains come together, so will your fellow athletes along with this incredible community and the spirit of aloha, transcending location to create an unforgettable experience, not like any other. Memories to be cherished will be created alongside all those who have made it to the start line and continue their journey towards this pinnacle achievement. The unique and challenging course along with the immense support of the local community will carry you through the day as you swim in the beautiful Sand Hollow Reservoir, bike a challenging climb into the picturesque Snow Canyon State Park, run along the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, and finish in the center of historic downtown St. George, culminating in a celebration of YOU! Our staff, the incredible team of volunteers, and Greater Zion stand at the ready to ensure you have the best experience possible here in the Land of Endurance. As you enter this beautiful terrain, we remind all who arrive from around the world, to bring an awareness, courtesy, and respect for all. Greater Zion is so excited to host you all and we appreciate the care and kindness you show to the community in return. Embrace the striking beauty of this Southwestern treasure, rise to the occasion, and remember, “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!”

Kevin Lewis Director Greater Zion Convention & Tourism History will be made on May 7. For the first time ever, the canon blast that starts the IRONMAN World Championship will be heard across the Sand Hollow Reservoir, and the legendary “You are an IRONMAN” finisher call will bring home champions on Main Street. When the first rays of the sun break over the Hurricane Cliffs splashing color and light onto the waters of Sand Hollow Reservoir we can truly celebrate “Kumukahi” – a new beginning. In some ways, the anticipation of this moment has been building for centuries. It resonates through the landscape and pulsates through the lives and character of the people who make Greater Zion their home. The rush we feel from this years’ world championship experience somehow seems natural – almost as if it were meant to be. And yet, the newness of it all keeps us hovering in a state of wonder. This is a day of reckoning. A defining moment when the forces of time push forward, defying the odds to write yet another chapter in the storied tales of the American Southwest. As we pull together to do what has never been done before, the enduring legends of Kona race to join us from across the sea. On race day, the call of former world champions will rise from the desert terrain, echoing across new plateaus, adding new depth and character to the Land of Endurance.
Spencer Cox Utah Governor Welcome to the Land of Endurance. We are thrilled to celebrate the legacy of the most iconic endurance event in the world in a state with an endurance legacy of its own. It’s a legacy that speaks to us. It’s what brings the desert world to life. And we invite you to join in the celebration of a new beginning. Welcome to Greater Zion,
GREATER ZION COMMUNITY LEADERS
From near and far, generation after generation, people are drawn to a land we call Greater Zion. They come for reasons they can’t explain, compelled by a feeling that comes from deep within. In this extraordinary place, a collection of communities, filled with optimism and purpose, have grown and thrived. Each community on the Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission course has its own distinct character and flavor. You can enjoy red sand and blue water adventure in Hurricane where the race starts, or Broadway-level arts and entertainment in Ivins - home to the signature climb up Snow Canyon. You’ll pass through the refreshing communities of Washington and Santa Clara that radiate with pioneer heritage and a peaceful, “feels like home” attitude. As you venture through the mountain communities of Gunlock and Veyo, imagine the early pioneers carving out a life in the rugged terrain. In the center of it all is St. George, one of the country’s most sought after communities. St. George has that unique blend of small town feel with big city energy and amenities – all nestled in the heart of all the adventure and scenery you can possibly imagine. As leaders of these communities, we celebrate your success and invite you to immerse yourself in the beauty of our landscapes and the enthusiasm of our people.

* A bold statement from the brand that wants to sell you the product, sure. But getting used to nutrition is one thing many athletes don’t prioritize in training. Some even risk it all by trying new products on race day. So, use whatever you’ve trained with or get used to what you’re getting on-course. In this case the GEL 100 and GEL 100 CAF 100. The primary usage is the theme word “Kumukahi’ with the Hawaiian Islands (font is Kon Tiki Aloha JF in Adobe Suite) and the tag line ‘A New Beginning’ (font is Cervo Medium).

CONTENDERS WHO WILL TAKE THE TITLE IN ST. GEORGE?
F
rom Ali`i Drive to the St. George Town Square Park, from Hawai`i’s black lava fields to Utah’s red rock vistas, the world will watch as IRONMAN World Champions are crowned outside of the Big Island for the first time in history. Just like the legendary course in Hawai`i, the race will be both beautiful and brutal. And whether they’re more familiar with Kona’s twists and turns or looking forward to this new, unique challenge, here are the five professional men and women we think have the best shot at the top step of the podium. By Jennifer Ward
DANIELA RYF The Swiss “Angry Bird” has won both the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 world crowns in the same year on three separate occasions; this will be the dominant athlete’s first opportunity to take three IRONMAN world titles in the same year. Ryf is already a beast on the bike, and with all her training in the Alps to back her up she should shine on St. George’s climbs.
COUNTRY: Switzerland AGE: 34 TWITTER: @danielaaryf INSTAGRAM: @danielaaryf CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: 1st 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 IRONMAN World Championship; 1st 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

ANNE HAUG Haug grew up in Germany and though she was athletic, she didn’t discover triathlon until her late 20’s. She focused on short-course racing in her early days, but after finishing 35th at the 2016 Rio Olympics, decided to try long-course racing. St. George will be a new race locale for Haug, but one thing we do know: with this diminutive powerhouse in the field, the other professional women will be running scared on the marathon.
COUNTRY: Germany AGE: 39 TWITTER: @haug_anne INSTAGRAM: @tri.anne.haug CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: 1st 2019 IRONMAN World Championship; 1st 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 California; 3rd, 2018 IRONMAN World Championship
LAURA PHILIPP Another pure runner, Philipp has enjoyed a rapid rise up the IRONMAN ranks. Since her debut IRONMAN in Barcelona in 2018—where she set the fastest debut time ever of 8:34:47—she has enjoyed numerous victories despite a leaner than usual race schedule. The run is her strongest, and after kicking off the season with a bang at IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai, she is already a favorite for the podium at this marquee event. SKYE MOENCH Moench is an American favorite who exploded onto the IRONMAN scene in 2019 with a win at the IRONMAN European Championship in Frankfurt. She’s as close to a hometown hero this race will see, having been a proud resident of Utah since the age of 12. Moench took up triathlon as second career after working as an accountant. She’s extremely balanced across all three disciplines but watch for her in the mix at the front of the bike. KRISTIAN BLUMMENFELT Norway is taking the sport by storm and leading the way is none other than the Olympic champion himself. Blummenfelt is trying to do the impossible: winning Olympic gold and an IRONMAN world title within a 12-month period. His first (and only) full-distance finish was nearly perfect, too: he won IRONMAN Cozumel in a mind-blowing time of 7:21:11 on the heels of a 2:35 marathon. He hails from Bergen, on Norway’s western coast, and spends much of his time training in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of in the south of Spain. COUNTRY: Norway

SEBASTIAN KIENLE The 2014 IRONMAN world champion and two-time IRONMAN 70.3 world champ recently announced that he will retire at the end of next season, meaning this will be one of his final chances to earn another world title. This fan favorite is known for his horsepower on the bike, and he’ll be one of many strong cyclists with ground to make up after the swim. Hailing from Mühlacker in southeastern Germany, Kienle began competing in triathlons at just 12 years old and decided he wanted to become a professional triathlete as a teenager. LIONEL SANDERS This popular pro wants his first IRONMAN world title, which would be the first for Canada since the country took both the men’s and women’s titles in 2003. Sanders overcame addiction as a young man and discovered triathlon, where he’s been dominant across both the half and full dstances. He’s won twice in St. George over the half distance, and to come out on top he’ll have to take full advantage of the grueling bike course. Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Sanders now spends much of his time living and training in Tucson, Arizona. COUNTRY: Canada AGE: 34 INSTAGRAM: @lsanderstri
ALISTAIR BROWNLEE A man many call the greatest short-course triathlete in history will be seeking that elusive first IRONMAN world title after taking the 2021 season off due to injury. This two-time Olympic champion has unfinished business after finishing a disappointing 21st in 2019 in Kona. As an athlete who excels on tough courses, Brownlee will likely go all-out all day, beginning with an impeccable swim. An almost born climber and a former British fell running champion, he’ll be equally as comfortable on the ascents and descents on the bike as he is on the run. FACES BEHIND THE START LINE Get to know a few of the inspirational athletes competing in St. George.
Everyone on an IRONMAN start line has a story. Nobody just coasts to a race or a finish line as an afterthought, or rises to glory on another’s coattails. Among the thousands of athletes competing at this first-ever stateside world championship, we wanted to showcase a few competitors with stories that will move you. Let their roads be an inspiration as you compete, wrapping up—and complete your own story.
AMY PURVIS
Hometown: Orange, California Age: 54 Only two years old at the peak of the Vietnam War, Amy Purvis was found alone in a rice paddy and was adopted by a U.S. Marine. She’s what you would call a “born survivor.” Now a single mom of a 16-year-old daughter, she wants to show her daughter what hard work and determination can do. After doing her first IRONMAN 70.3 in 2018, she celebrated her 50th birthday by doing her first full IRONMAN in Florida the following year. She’s back in St. George after racing the halfdistance here last year.
“I was about to turn 50 and I decided I wanted to be in the best shape of my life,” Purvis says regarding what drew her to sign up for her first fulll. “I had recently lost over 50 pounds, and I’ve continued to be in better shape each birthday as I find new adventures and meet new challenges.” Purvis says she’s excited to race again in St. George as she loved the beautiful course and city. “This time I’ll see how I fare against the best in the world at the hardest IRONMAN in the U.S. It’s a challenge I’m really thrilled to take on.” 26
KRIS FREEMAN
Hometown: Campton, New Hampshire Age: 42 In 2002, Kris Freeman became the first athlete with Type-1 diabetes to qualify for the Winter Olympics, where he represented USA in crosscountry skiing. He'd go on to compete in three more winter Olympics and eight world championships, for a total of 17 U.S. national titles. After retiring in 2018, Freeman missed competing so signed up for his first IRONMAN in Lake Placid in 2019. He raced there again last year, and is looking forward to taking on a new challenge over somewhat familiar terrain. “My first Olympics was Salt Lake City, and I lived and trained in Park City for six years,” Freeman explains. “I’m well versed in the climate and terrain that Utah has to offer.” Freeman adds that the strength he built as a cross-country skier makes him excel on hilly courses. “I should also mention that I have never raced in salt water before and was a little nervous about Kona. The venue change has eliminated that worry,” he says. Despite all his titles, Freeman had a lot to learn when he took up triathlon: “My best crosscountry skiing event was the 15K , which only
takes 35-40 minutes. The full IRONMAN race is four or five times longer than any race I’d prepared for in the past. Learning to swim has been the most rewarding part of this process—I love challenging my body and mind in new ways and IRONMAN has been an excellent outlet for my competitive nature.”

BOB JORDAN Hometown: Lake Oswego, Oregon Age: 71 In 1997, Bob Jordan’s 4-year-old daughter, Emily, was diagnosed with leukemia. While in her hospital room following a bone marrow transplant the following year, Emily wrote a letter to IRONMAN in hopes of getting her dad a slot to Kona. IRONMAN picked Jordan, and Emily passed away five days later. Jordan was part of the 1997 NBC broadcast of Kona, and he’s continued his IRONMAN journey ever since. He’s beyond excited to compete in this unique event, outside of the Big Island. “This has everything you want in a world championship course,” Jordan says. “There are stunningly beautiful views, challenging terrain, and widely varying weather possibilities making it even more exciting.” He adds that he left his last race in St. George with real estate brochures in his back pocket. Like many athletes competing in St. George, Jordan had mixed thoughts when he found out he would not be competing on the famed course in Kona: “Kona represents legacy, history, and the tradition that is IRONMAN. I have been lucky enough to race Kona on six occasions. But any change brings with it the promise of something new and unexpected. I’m looking forward to the new venue in that spirit.” An IRONMAN veteran of 25 years, Jordan has had a lot of time to reflect on what the sport means to him: “Over the span of six age groups, I’ve had good races, tough races, a few marginal finishes, but I have not regretted a single swim stroke, pedal revolution or leg turnover in the process. It’s fun, challenging, and in many ways, a candid tool to define yourself. Plus, my wife lets me do it.” 28
LAUREN PARKER Hometown: Newcastle, Australia Age: 32 In 2017, Lauren Parker had just finished second in her age group at the IRONMAN World Championship and had her sights set on going pro. A week before competing at IRONMAN Australia, she crashed into a guardrail during a morning ride, suffering life-changing injuries. She has since made a remarkable comeback in her new pursuit of paratriathlon, where she has swiftly made a mark. She has since earned a bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, where she was overtaken by American Kendall Gretsch in the final meters of an unforgettable finish. This will be her first full IRONMAN as a paratriathlete. “I’m so motivated. I can’t wait to get back to the distance I loved as an able-bodied athlete,” Parker says. “I knew that after Tokyo, I wanted to get back to IRONMAN events. It will only make me stronger for my future goals, which include gold at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.” Handcycle athletes competing in this year’s IRONMAN World Championship face a very unique challenge. Handcycling is incredibly
difficult on flat or rolling terrain, but big climbs are a completely different endeavor: “The biggest challenge for me is making the cutoff time on the handcycle. We have the same cutoff as everyone else, so it’s quite challenging. The bike is my strongest leg so I have the confidence that I can do well.”

ALIVE
Athletes gunning for this once-in-a-lifetime stateside IRONMAN World Championship can look to history for insight and hard-won wisdom. By Jennifer Ward
U
nlike most full-distance IRONMAN races, the one that ran in St. George a decade ago was short lived. It ran from 2010 until 2012—a flash in time compared to giants like its sister races in Florida, Austria, and Canada, to name only a few. The lore surrounding the race, however, rivals many of its longstanding counterparts. Simply completing the distances of IRONMAN are dauting enough, and most race organizers don’t go out of their way to throw in extra challenges. But in St. George, difficult terrain is unavoidable. History tells us we have a venue “worthy of a world championship,” which is the fancy way of saying this course is tough. Really tough.
32
Like Kona, Southern Utah’s winds can be fierce and unpredictable. Those who made it to the finish were left with stories to last a lifetime and some good advice on how to deal with the unexpected. “I just threw out my pacing plan and made some adjustments since I knew I’d be out there for longer than I’d planned,” says Bryan Dunn, who won his age group in 2012 and qualified for his first of three IRONMAN World Championships. “The key is just not to get angry at the elements. Accept the things you can’t change and adjust. I just kept telling myself, ‘Someone has to win my age group today, why not me?’”
For many who competed in St. George between 2010 and 2012, or those who have competed at IRONMAN 70.3 St. George since, the draw of doing a world championship at such an unforgettable venue is what brings them to the start of the first IRONMAN World Championship outside of Hawai`i. This locale shifts the focus away from Kona-esque adversaries (heat, humidity, and wind) offering significant additional climbing on both the bike and run legs. It’s a course that will truly determine the fittest triathletes on earth. “I raced in 2010 and loved all the hills on the bike, but the addition of Snow Canyon on the bike course for the world championship will make for an extra spicy finale,” says 16-time IRONMAN finisher Jordan Blanco, who has qualified for Kona nine times. “We’re trading in black lava formations for dramatic red rocks for another challenging course in a stunning location. The organizers have developed a course that will really keep us on our toes.” Like Kona, performing well in St. George is about overcoming both the distance and the elements, which have oscillated from bone chilling to blisteringly hot. Few people know that better than seven-time IRONMAN champion Heather Wurtele (now retired), who won the first two installments of IRONMAN St. George and remains the course record holder. “The terrain is going to be very tough, but everything else is unpredictable,” Wurtele cautions, who not only competed in St. George but trained there frequently and knows the conditions well. “It could be very windy; it could be super cold at the start or unbearably hot on the bike. The thing that makes this a world championship course
in my mind is that people are going to have to deal with nature and a lot of it.” “I always said that St. George would be my dream world championship course,” she adds. “It offers the perfect mix of a challenging course and ideal location. It’s Kona-esque, in a way—I’ve always felt that.” Whether this new location brings with it unfamiliar tempests or simply provides an interesting blip in world championship history, there’s one thing we all know: among these red hills, a new beginning awaits.

YOUR PERFECT WEEK IN ST. GEORGE Check all the pre-race boxes while hitting the highlights of this Southwest host city. By Jennifer Ward
T
his month, the Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission qualifying athletes will do something their predecessors never have. For the first time in history, triathlon’s marquee event was temporarily relocated to the contiguous U.S. Those who’ve raced in Kona might be wondering where to get their pre-race pizza or morning acai bowl. With St. George taking the spotlight this year, routines will shift as athletes execute the logistical pre-race dance with a different backdrop. It’s no easy task to coordinate check-in, gear drop, and pre-race fine tuning, while still—hopefully—enjoying yourself. (Yes, you’re allowed!) If you have family and supporters along for the ride, it’s important that they get a break from dealing with you for a while, too. So, how could a perfectly balanced race week in St. George play out? We talked to athletes who’ve been around the Town Square block a few times and dug for some local treasures we’re confident will make your week successful and memorable. Throughout our suggested itinerary, you'll find the pre-race tasks you won’t want to leave unchecked. Get organized, get rested, and get ready to make memories in the Land of Endurance!
34
MONDAY/DAY 1: SETTLE IN Whatever day you’re arriving in St. George, take your first few hours to settle in, shake out the travel legs, and catch up on any missed sleep. Head to a grocery store to stock your airbnb fridge—there's an Albertson’s just west of downtown on Dixie Dr., and one on the east side of town too. For organic goods, our top pick is Natural Grocer on W Telegraph St. Head to the quaint Rowley’s Red Barn next door for some local produce, a jug of apple cider, and a pint of house-made ice cream to take home. Whip up a healthy dinner at home with your treasures, put your feet up and visualize a momentous week ahead. The IRONMAN Info Booth is open 11-4 in Town Square Park if you have any race-related questions that just can’t wait.
TUESDAY/DAY 2: JUMP RIGHT IN 6-10 A.M: Wake up, brew coffee at home, and hit Sand Hollow Reservoir for the 7 am Practice Swim. These swims will be offered Tuesday through Thursday—getting it done early in the week will help you mentally prepare and get a lay of the swim and T1
land. Take stock of where you’ll be checking your bike and drive back to town along the bike course to see what you’re in for. Family in tow? Bring them along. They won't even know you're sneaking in laps while they paddle board, swim, snorkel, scuba dive or even cliff jump (heights span kidfriendly to courageous) amidst the sandstones. They can also tackle the sand dunes on an ATV. Once back in town, grab a second coffee and avocado toast at FeelLove Coffee, a favorite of Nicholas Chase, a professional triathlete, coach, and U.S Air Force member based in St. George. “If you love kombucha and fancy lattes, you can’t miss this stop,” he says, “with its amazing interior design and the best cake in St. George—the Shakra Cake!” This year, athletes will select their own general check-in, as well as bike and gear bag check-in times. This means you’ll have more control over your schedule than in the old days of line-ups. Today’s the day athletes can begin checking in—it's always nice to complete this essential pre-race task early in the week! Athlete Check-In runs from 9 am-6 pm Tuesday through Thursday.
today is the day to fine-tune your rig and your bike strategy with a pre-race recon spin on course. Chase recommends hitting “the Veyo loop,” which starts near the 55-mile/90-kilometer mark, just after the Snow Canyon Parkway section. (See the Bike Course Map on page TK.) The full loop is about 60 miles/100 kilometers. You can shorten it by starting at the personal needs bag station closer to the 60-mile/100-kilometer mark or getting picked up somewhere along the route. He adds that a stop at Veyo Pies for a refuel is a must. For a less ambitious ride and one that will introduce you to a good chunk of the course features and road quality, start at T1 and ride to T2 at Tabernacle and 100 W. (Approximately 30 miles/50 kilometers).
12-4 P.M: Grab lunch and swap battle stories of the Kona Energy Lab at Hawaiian Poke Bowl (175 W 900 St.)
10 A.M.-12 P.M: We recommend doing as many of the weekly activities as you can to fully experience a World Championship race-week. If you have kids, register them for the IRONKIDS race today at 4:30 (registration runs from 9-4 in Town Square Park). While you’re at it, register yourself and your supporters for Thursday’s Land of Endurance Fun Run. 12-6 P.M: Head home for a light jog, a homemade lunch and some more feet-up time before walking back to town for the IRONKIDS run at 4 (Town Square Park) and the Parade of Athletes at 5:30 p.m. starting at the M-Dot on Tabernacle St. E. 6-9 P.M: Grab your friends and training partners and head to George's Corner Restaurant & Pub. The menu includes salads, burgers, fried chicken and ribs, all which pair nicely with a Utah brew. Produce is pulled from the owners' garden, and the meat is fresh off their farm, never frozen. Their bread is handmade inhouse—and there are gluten-free options, too.
WEDNESDAY/DAY 3: VISUALIZE YOUR DAY 6-11 A.M: If you didn’t hit the Practice Swim and
T1 recon yesterday, make that a priority. If you did,

5-9 P.M: Don your new St. George zip-up and grab an authentic Mexican dinner to go from Irmita’s Casita (95 W 700 S, St.) or enjoy a homemade dinner followed by some light foam rolling or stretching.
THURSDAY/DAY 4: BRIEF AND BROWSE 6-10 A.M: Enjoy a healthy breakfast smoothie at
home, then head to Town Square Park for the Land of Endurance Fun Run at 8:30 am. It’s a chance to shake out the legs, meet fellow athletes, and enjoy the fresh morning spring air of St. George.
10 A.M.-8 P.M: Brush up on race planning today
by penciling in your preferred language race briefing, beginning at 10am with Chinese and culminating with English at 8pm, right after the Welcome Banquet.
10 A.M-3 P.M: Fine-tune your bike by doing a light
spin on the course if you haven’t yet and give the family a break from your schedule by sending them to the St. George Children's Museum. There they can explore pint-sized towns, shoot hoops, play music, and create giant bubbles. At the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm, dubbed one of the best dinosaur track sites in the world by paleontologists, children and adults alike will enjoy the rare and well-preserved fossil fish, invertebrate traces and dinosaur remains. No kids? After the ride, take your favorite supporter to lunch at the upscale Cliffside Restaurant, offering breathtaking vistas overlooking St. George. You'll want to try the creamy potato soup, the Southwestern Santa Fe salad, or the fish tacos—all are favorites. Walk off lunch by browsing the antique stores, boutiques, and jewelry shops in walkable downtown St. George. Start your carb-load early by dipping into the Sweet Tooth Fairy (2376 Red Cliffs Dr.
Ste 309B) afterwards for what Chase calls “the most amazing sugar cookies and cake bites.” Use any extra time today to fine-tune your gear, prepare your race-morning breakfast and race nutrition, and pack your gear and personal needs bag for tomorrow’s check-in. Pull out that gear checklist and lay everything out for final inspection. Timing chip? Check! Goggles! Check. Helmet, sunglasses, visor, race belt...you know the drill.
6-9 P.M: Join with fellow athletes, supporters, and staff at the Welcome Banquet to get pumped for the 2021 IRONMAN World Championship. (6 p.m. at the Dixie Convention Center). Gather any last-minute tips from training partners and double-check your race notes with your coach.
FRIDAY: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN 6-7 A.M: ‘Twas the day before IRONMAN...it’s going
to be a big day. Start it out right with a light shakeout run and a carbohydrate-rich breakfast. You’ll be heading to bike and bike bag check-in at Sand Hollow State Park at some point today depending on what time you selected (it runs from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.) so make sure all your gear is ready, working, and packed. If you’re not checking in until later in the day, you have time for a light spin and to make sure everything is working smoothly on your bike.
7 A.M.-5 P.M: You’ll also be checking your run bags
today at T2 (Tabernacle St. at 100W.) so remember to schedule this into your day.
12-1 P.M: Eat on the run between check-ins, or head home for some recovery time and a healthy homemade wrap. Be sure to keep your carbohydrates topped all day today by snacking frequently and hydrating well and often.
2-5 P.M: Rest, rest, rest! PR’s don’t happen on tired legs. Lie down or sit where you can, and don’t do any last-minute training. 6 P.M. Fuel up for tomorrow at the family friendly
Pizza Factory where artisan crusts are piled high with an array of sauces and toppings. The menu also includes spaghetti, a well-stocked salad bar, a kid's menu, and "twists” which many dub the best bread sticks they've ever had.
9 P.M: Early to bed, early to rise. A New Beginning awaits! 36
SATURDAY: GET READY FOR GREATNESS
SUNDAY: CELEBRATE YOUR RACE
3 A.M.–11 P.M: It's the day you've been training for—
8-10 A.M: Choose between a luxurious sleep in
and you're in for an adventure. The morning kicks off early in Town Square, where you'll catch the athlete shuttle to Sand Hollow State Park. Spectators can park just north of the entrance to catch their own bus to the reservoir. Once out of the water, you'll tackle the hilly bike course, which honors those climbs with unparalleled views of St. George and Snow Canyon, and equally epic descents. Catch your spectators in T2 in Town Square before your run, which climbs through the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. You'll finish to fame and fanfare on Main Street, in the heart of St. George.
4-8 P.M: If you’re fast enough to finish before the midnight hour, fuel up on pizza in the athlete tent then get yourself home for a shower and some welldeserved recovery. Or, take professional athlete Linsey Corbin’s advice and as soon as you cross the line, walk across the street and visit Farmstead Bakery. “Such great treats and iced coffees!” she says.
and breakfast at The Bear Paw Café in downtown St. George. You’ll have a hard time choosing between the apple oatmeal pecan pancakes and their hearty breakfast burrito. If too many others had the same idea, try the nearby Kneaders Bakery and Café or Gaia’s Garden Café (695 100 W St.) for vegan selections.
10 A.M.-12 P.M: Take a croissant and cappuccino to go and head down to the IRONMAN Store to grab a commemorative jacket or mug, and then set up a blanket at Town Square Park for the age-group awards. Applaud your friends, receive an award yourself, or just bask in the positive energy around you.
If you’re too antsy to sit still, pop on some compression socks and take your favorite sherpa to Freddy’s Frozen Custard or Wood Ashe Rye, Chase’s favorite local bar. Bike and gear bag pick up runs from 7 pm to 1:30 am.
1-5 P.M: British pro Emma Pallant says that one of her favorite places to flush out the post-race legs are the Candy Cliffs. “The views are mind-blowing, and it’s a brilliant way to get fresh air, vitamin D and active recoveryKumukahi and come Theme away with unique photos Word Graphics and memories,” she adds. She likes to follow this with some frozen custard from Nielsen’s and stretching in Vernon Worthen Park.
11-12 P.M: Head back to the finish line for the ultimate
6-9 P.M: Keep the vibes coming at the Kumukahi
finish-line party, and to support your fellow racers.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: REST AND RECOUPERATE 10 A.M.-5 P.M: The incredible wealth of beauty in Zion National Park is just a 45-minute drive away. It's an ideal place to reward outdoor-loving race sherpas with a hiking or backpacking trip— Zion really is worthy of multiple days’ worth of exploration. Chase recommends the Narrows as his favorite hike, while pro Sam Long likes Angels Landing. “If a recovery ride is more appealing, park at La Verkin Coffee and ride into to Zion and up to the tunnel,” Long adds. If Zion’s not your thing, Chase suggests The Vortex hike, only 30 minutes outside St. George off Lower Sand Cove Rd. in Dammeron Valley. “This hike is easily missed for more well-known ones, but the views are amazing and the vortex pattern within the rock for which it is named is quite unique.” If you want to keep it simple and stay closer to town, visit Petroglyph Park—more a large rock etched with unscathed ancient petroglyphs than it is a "park." While other nearby areas also boast petroglyphs (including the Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site), this spot tucked in a Bloomington neighborhood is easily accessible and still impressive. Need something less physically taxing to rest those tired legs—or even to reward your dedicated support squad? Take an entirely different approach to the day at the Sagestone Spa & Salon at Red Mountain Resort. Facials and deep tissue massages—along with a host of other treatments—blend desert botanicals and mineralrich muds, clays, and salts. Sip tea in a room overlooking the mountains before a Himalayan salt stone massage. A host of day spas in town offer treatments, too.
7–9 P.M: Celebrate your accomplishment at the upscale Painted Pony (reservations recommended), in a beautiful section of downtown. Steaks, bacon-wrapped duck, and herb-whipped potatoes are served up in the restaurant's Southwest-inspired atmosphere. We hope your week in St. George was a memorable one, and that you head into the rest of the season fired up, inspired, and ready for New Beginnings everywhere you look.

IN ST. GEORGE Practical tips and a play-by-play course breakdown to help you have your very best day among the red rocks. By Jason Lentzke
Congratulations on earning your spot to the Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission. St. George is truly a worldchampionship-worthy venue and I hope this guide will help prepare you to take on and enjoy one of the most incredible courses on the triathlon circuit. In the final few days of race week, be wary of goal inflation: maintain perspective, stick to your plan, and avoid trying to squeeze in one last mega-session. Remember, you can’t get any fitter at this point. Control what you can control and focus on reducing stress. 40
RACE MORNING Because of the logistics of a two-transition race, athletes will be looking at a very early morning on race day. Plan your morning transportation accordingly to arrive in the T2 vicinity (located at Tabernacle and 100W St.) to board the athlete shuttles heading to Sand Hollow Reservoir for the swim start. Shuttle loading will take place one street south of T2, at 100S St. Many athletes choose to wear their race kit and timing chip under their morning clothes and transport their swim gear (wetsuit, cap, and goggles) in a backpack. Remember, you’ll have
already checked your bike and run gear the day before, so all you’ll need the day of the race is your morning food (you’ll likely arrive at Sand Hollow quite early, so pack a light snack and preferred electrolyte source to top up your fuel stores prior to your swim start time), your bike hydration and nutrition, and any extra tubes or cartridges you forgot to include with your bike gear check in. Don’t forget a headlamp—it will be dark at the reservoir. It’s important to mention here that you won’t have access to your run gear bag prior to boarding the shuttles on race morning. Ensure that all your run nutrition and run gear (hat, sunglasses, race belt with bib number attached) is dropped off during your scheduled drop-off window the day before you race. You will, as mentioned above, have access to your bike on race morning for any last-minute adds. The temperature may be crisp while you wait to start—a light jacket or mylar blanket can work wonders. Don’t worry though, temperatures will likely hit the mid-80s toward the end of your ride; be aggressive with your electrolyte consumption starting 24 hours prior to race day.
SWIM: 2.4 MILES / 3.8 KM / 1 LAP Sand Hollow reservoir is located about 30 minutes from St. George, near the small town of Hurricane, Utah. The water is usually between 59-61 Fahrenheit, and the swim begins into the sun so bring both tinted and clear goggles for
sunny or overcast conditions, and plan on using landmarks and buoys to sight if you need to. (You might want to practice this prior to race day.) Before you start your swim, walk to the beach and splash cold water on your face so you are acclimated. Then, seed yourself within your agegroup corral. Consume 1 gel and 24 ounces of sports drink about 30 minutes before your swim start. Do not start out too quickly. Stay calm and collected. Nobody wins the race in the water. An 80 percent effort will allow you to get up to a good speed before settling into your IRONMAN pace. Maintain composure and finish strong on the back half. Avoiding congestion depends on how you seed yourself relative to your ability—be wise and don’t overestimate your ability. Things should thin out by the time your back is to the first turn buoy, roughly 900 meters into the swim. Buoys will be on your right for the entire swim, so you might want to think about what side you’re breathing on in order to sight efficiently.
BIKE: 112 MILES / 180 KM / 2 LOOPS Yes, there will be climbs, but we also have beautiful pavement and fast, non-technical descents. Stronger riders will benefit from riding a larger tooth chain ring (54-58) so that they can always keep tension on the chain—especially on descents. I recommend athletes ride with Kumukahi Theme an 11-28 or 11-30 cassette so that they can work Word Graphics efficiently. If you have a disc wheel, you’ll want it for this course. Primary

your heart rate settles. Establish an eating and drinking plan early and stick with it. Focus on finding your rhythm and adhering to your target heart rate and power. (I usually prescribe 70-75 percent of FTP on flats, capped at 100 percent of FTP on climbs). The first half of the ride should feel comfortable. You’ll be rested, energized and very strong so ignore the temptation to go with other athletes early on. NOTHING should feel hard over the first 2 hours or so. If it does, back off. IRONMAN is a long day, and the real climbing starts around mile 60. Most of the climbs on this course are rolling. This should allow you to carry speed into the start of each climb. Ride within yourself and use your momentum to carry yourself up the first portion of most climbs. Pace wisely so that you can use gravity to your advantage by keeping tension on the chain as you descend. It makes very little sense to sit up and fuel as you descend; instead, use the climbs as a chance to fuel and then stay aero and continue to pedal as you descend. Don’t obsess over it, but if your heart rate is too high, put your bike in a bigger gear and bring the cadence down a bit—even if you are climbing. Keeping the cadence low should reduce heart rate stress and keep the effort more muscular. This will also help you keep your bike stable when the wind kicks up. Target a cadence of 80-90 RPM all day. Relax your upper body and try to keep your head behind your hands when aero. Your goal should be to arrive at mile 75 with a positive mindset and high energy. Within a world championship environment, it’s far too easy to over bike early on. Do not give in to that temptation. The real racing in IRONMAN begins at mile 16 of the marathon. One of the most decisive portions of your race takes place from mile 90 on the bike through mile 2 of the run. Be aggressive with your fueling during this time and stick to your plan. This is critical for a strong run! 42
As you approach the 10-kilometer Snow Canyon climb at about mile 100, stay patient. This is a stunning climb with spectacular views and several changes in grade. It’s an opportunity for you to manage your effort by pushing a bigger gear toward the bottom of the climb and shifting to an easier gear as you climb. Don’t be afraid to get out of the saddle and work different muscles. The final descent to T2 is very fast. Be aware of athletes around you and be vocal to stay safe. With appropriate gearing, you should be able to keep tension on the chain all the way to T2. Keeping a load on the legs will help prime your run legs for the final third of your race. Start mentally preparing for your run and don't neglect hydration over the final 5-7 miles. If you haven’t already honed your race nutrition plan to a T, target at least 1 bottle of fluid per hour (alternate between sports drink and water) along with 1 gel every 40 minutes. Do the math and determine how many bottles you need to consume. I also recommend 2 salt pills per hour.
Ice is your friend—I suggest running with a cap so you can keep ice on your head to stay cool. If you paced your bike well, your run heart rate should be roughly 8-10 beats higher than your bike heart rate. Again, save the legs for the second lap. I cannot emphasize this enough. Even if you have issues, keep moving forward, expecting to recover. When things get tough, focus on moving from aid station to aid station. These stations are your chance to walk and take in calories, then get moving to the next. A strategy I like to use is breaking the run up into four 10k’s. Stick with your paces and get your calories in. If you are really struggling with ingesting calories, cola or broth can be your best friend.
RUN: 26.2 MILES / 42 KM/ 2 LOOPS I’ll say it again and again: You really can’t start slow enough. Don’t go out faster than your open marathon pace. No matter how slow you think you’re going when you hit the pavement, due to adrenaline you’ll be going quicker than your goal pace. It’s best to move with a little bit of reserve until mile 16. A huge amount of time can be made up between miles 14-20.
Save your legs for the final downhill stretch along Diagonal Street. Your quads will be screaming, but if you paced your day right, you’ll be able to empty the tank and soak in one of the most iconic IRONMAN finish lines around. Control what you can and leave all the external factors alone. You are ready for this.
The run, much like the bike, is rolling. The first 2.5 miles are on a slight uphill drag with some tree coverage as you climb Diagonal Street. I tell athletes that they must not overcook the first 5km of each run loop. As you climb, ignore your pace and lean forward from your ankles, not your hips. As you head left onto Snow Canyon Parkway, enjoy the slight downhill and focus on turnover. Then, get ready for another long, grinding ascent as you descend toward Mathis Park. At this point, the shade may become just a memory and you will have to be mentally tough and smart: you’ll be exposed and running uphill with the southern Utah sun hammering down on you. Use every aid station to cool off, ingest fuel and regain form. Don’t be afraid to walk through the aid stations, especially early on.
