Third day of competition added to Giant Pine Mountain schedule IRON MOUNTAIN — Spectators can look forward to a “fantastic turnout of jumpers and more countries represented” at the 2019 Pine Mountain Continental Cup ski jumping competition starting Friday. Because of cancelled events in Europe, a third Continental Cup tournament will take place at Pine Mountain on Friday, which will bring in more jumpers needing to acquire Continental Cup points, club correspondent secretary Susie Fox said. “The world is coming to Iron Mountain to experience ski jumping like no other place on the ski jumping circuit,” Fox said. The “Holy Saturday” attendance in Iron Mountain exceeds the total of all European and Asian Continental Cup competition crowds put together, according to a spokesperson for the International Ski Federation, or FIS. “In Europe and Asia, they talk about Iron Mountain because of the great and unique competition site that is provided for them, but mostly because of the huge welcoming crowd anticipating the competition,” Fox said. Required improvements made over the past few years have helped secure a ski jumping future at the Giant Pine venue. Most recently, the profile of the hill was changed to improve safety and trees were removed for additional visibility for spectators. “It is an exciting time for ski jumping in Iron Mountain and an exciting time for the possibility of things to come. Over the past few months and continuing in the future, the Kiwanis Ski Club has met with many individuals and corporations discussing the capital campaign to raise funds for the necessary changes to the facility to continue hosting International Ski Jumping as we know it and potentially World Cup Ski jumping,” Fox said. A common theme in recent conversation is “what else can we do with the facility?” Fox said, adding, “We are addressing that and welcoming all input. The current plan must be to get the ski jump facility up to FIS standards and add the complimentary activities after that. Without a complying ski jump, the other activities are a moot point.” (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 2) Recent state legislation to appropriate funds for Pine Mountain ski jumping could be a huge factor in its future; however, the amount has yet to be finalized. “It is very positive and appreciated,” Fox said, but noted, “The project to comply with FIS Standards still has a great need.” Those who want to pledge to the capital campaign can go to the website soaringintothefuture.com, she advised. Booster buttons for the competition were on sale at many locations throughout Dickinson County. Cost is $30 for adults and $25 for students age 11 to 17; younger children are admitted for free. Prices will increase by $5 at the gate. For more information on the event, go to www.kiwanisskiclub.org. KEEP IT CLEAN: On Wednesday, Feb. 13, there will be a Community Pride cleanup in the ski jump parking lots. “We are hoping that everyone who has a tailgate party cleans up after themselves, but there is always more to do,” Fox said. “Garbage bags will be provided and we welcome and appreciate all who are willing to help.”

ABOVE, NITA ENGLUND of the Kiwanis Ski Club finished 31st in the women’s normal hill competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, South Korea. This winter, Englund is competing in Women’s World Cup as a member of the USA Nordic Ski Jumping Team, which now includes both the men’s and women’s squads. She was among three American women on the 2018 Olympic team. She is the fifth member of the Pine Mountain-based Kiwanis Ski Club to earn an Olympic berth. Previous local jumpers selected were Dick Rahoi, Willie Erickson, Butch Wedin and Mark Konopacke. Last month, Englund placed 20th in a World Cup event in Rasnov, Romania. In the summer of 2017, she came away with gold at the U.S. Ski Jumping Championships on the HS134-meter hill at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, Utah. Englund pushed down to the 123.5meter mark for the longest ride of the competition. This past summer, she again was the top American in the women’s national championships at Utah Olympic Park.

Dougoveto’s Pine Mountain book earns award By THERESA PROUDFIT Staff Writer IRON MOUNTAIN— Dr. John Dougoveto of Iron Mountain was recently informed by the International Skiing History Association that he is a 2018 winner of its annual SKADE awards recognizing “outstanding creative work in ski history” for his recently published book, “Pine Mountain Ski Jump: A History of Ski Jumping in the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Area.” Dougoveto will receive his award April 4 in Park City, Utah, at the organization’s annual awards banquet. “I was completely shocked. I had no idea I was even being considered,” Dougoveto said. The ISHA Awards, first established in 1993, are presented to book authors, journalists, filmmakers, academicians, website developers, and other media publishers. The ISHA Awards are given every year in a different ski town; in recent years, the banquet has been in Squaw Valley, Calif.; Stowe Mountain, Vermont; and Aspen and Steamboat
JOHN DOUGOVETO Springs, Colo. The awards are presented for work published or formally completed before the end of the preceding calendar year. This year, seven authors will receive
SKADE awards along with two honorable mentions. The SKADE Award recognizes outstanding work on regional ski history or other outstanding work published in book form that is focused in part on ski history. This year’s international award winners come from all over the U.S., from Maine, New York, and Michigan to Utah, Colorado, and Washington; and as far away as Thredo, a ski resort in Australia. Two additional authors will also be honored at the Park City event with ISHA’s Ullr Award, presented for their singular book contribution to skiing’s historical record. For more information, go to www.skiinghistory.org Those who would like to purchase a copy of Dougoveto’s book can find order forms at the concession stand during this weekend’s ski tournament or by contacting Dougoveto at 906-774-4526. Dougoveto now is working on a history of the Pine Mountain ski jump for children that will be available at a children’s interactive program on ski jumping later this spring.

Hill captain Massicotte remembered By THERESA PROUDFIT Staff Writer It was all about “catching air” with Kurt Massicotte, a longtime Kiwanis Ski Club member who passed away last fall. After taking his first jumps at the age of 3, Massicotte was hooked on ski jumping. He picked up the sport under the direction of his father, Leon Massicotte, who secured first place in the B division at Pine Mountain in 1962. The 1982 Kingsford High School graduate traveled throughout the Midwest as a competitor and won both B class competitions at Pine Mountain in 1989 and 1990. He remained an active member of the Kiwanis Ski Club for more than 50 years, serving as hill captain for nearly two decades. He lost his battle with cancer Nov. 18 at 54 years old. Friends say Massicotte was a family man, a great father, and an exceptional hill captain. Lennie Walters, chief of scaffold, said he was helpful to anybody and everybody, always looking out for his crew. “He was always worried about me on top the scaffold, ’cause I wouldn’t come down during breaks,” Walters said. Massicotte would radio up to see what Walters needed, then “show up with a hot dog, or come up and visit,” he said. (Continued on page 17) “

... Kurt Massicotte (Continued from page 16) The hill crew respected Massicotte. He even had his own set of gear that no one dared to touch. “His spikes, goggles and face shield were off limits, and nobody did anything until Kurt showed up to tell us what to do,” Walters said. Everything was done to his high standards, and Massicotte always had the final say. For the past 15 years, he wouldn’t let anyone but himself cut the track for the jumpers. Yet Massicotte was not demanding by any means, they said. “There was never an issue. He was really mellow. He would say ‘If we don’t do it today, we will get it tomorrow,’” Walters said. Everyone knew how dedicated Massicotte was to the club, even his former employer in White Pine. “His boss would pay for him to come work on the hill for two weeks,” Walters said. But as dedicated as he was to the club, Massicotte was more devoted to his family. His wife Susie, and children Dayne and Maggy always came first. “We would be working and all of a sudden he would be gone, because it was Maggy’s birthday or a swimming party,” Walters said. His family spent plenty of time visiting him on site during tournament preparation as well. The kids would climb the hill while their dad was working to get Giant Pine in shape. Sunday nights after the tournament had ended and it was quiet, Massicotte would have a couple beers with his crew before going home to his family. “It was our chance to go over notes to prepare for the following year. I’m really going to miss those nights” Walters said. “The Kiwanis Ski Club would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Susie, Dayne and Maggie for letting us have a good portion of Kurt’s time while he worked hard to make the hill conditions

New traffic route established for this weekend’s tournament IRON MOUNTAIN — Be prepared for traffic changes entering and departing the ski jump complex during the 2019 Bellin Health Continental Cup tournament Friday through Sunday at Pine Mountain. Buying a button in advance will bring a special perk — those who pre-pay can use the express lanes when entering, said Susie Fox, correspondence secretary of the Kiwanis Ski Club. Conversely, those looking to leave before 2:30 p.m. each day during the competition are restricted to only turning right from the parking lot, “Please use extreme caution when approaching all gates and throughout the jump complex property, as many pedestrians will be on foot,” Fox added. Pine Mountain Road will be closed to through traffic Saturday and Sunday, starting at about 8:30 a.m. both days. In an effort to keep traffic running smoothly, traffic will be divided into two lanes approaching the jumps from either the south or north. The right lane will be an express lane for vehicles in which all occupants already have a ski button. This lane will also be for ski jump officials, Pine Mountain resort employees or day skiers going to Pine Mountain to ski. Residents from the ski jump area will also be allowed in this lane. All other traffic will be diverted to the sales lane. For safety purposes, parking will be permitted only on the west side of Pine Mountain Road between the ticket gates. During tickets sales, traffic exiting Pine Mountain onto Pine Mountain Road will have to exit to the right. The Kiwanis Ski Club recently met with local law enforcement to establish other guidelines for the annual event. They decided: — Special emphasis will be placed on fire safety in the parking lot. All fires must be contained and under control at all times; excess size and smoke will not be tolerated. Burning barrels or approved commercial contained fireplaces must be used. No fires may be started on the ground or using pallets, bales of hay, straw, Christmas trees and furniture. General guidelines are: — By 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10, all vehicles in general
The express lane is for vehicles in which all occupants have a ski button. admission parking must be parked bumper to the snowbank. — Admission buttons must be worn and visible at all times starting Friday, Feb. 9. — There is no access to the top of the hill either Friday, Saturday or Sunday of the event. — Snowmobiles and ORVs may not be ridden in the parking lot but can be parked in the far west end of the lot. — Campers, RVs and buses all have
designated parking areas. To check, call 906-774-4580. — Stereo noise must be kept to a minimum at all times. — Construction of shelters is strongly discouraged. Those put up cannot exceed 6 feet in respect to those in back. — Refrigerator-box-type “homemade” porta johns will not be permitted. — Spectators are expected to clean up after themselves. All must vacate the parking lot by 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday after the competition. — All state laws and county ordinances will be enforced, including alcohol-related violations. — Animals are discouraged at the complex. Those brought in must be on a leash — no exceptions. — No sliding is allowed on any of the hills or adjacent to the landing hill.

Pine Mountain debuted in 1939 Dr. John Dougoveto of Iron Mountain, a Junior and Class B ski jumper at Pine Mountain from 1958-67, is the author of “A History of Ski Jumping in the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Area.” Is this excerpt, the story of the first jumps at Pine Mountain is told. IRON MOUNTAIN — As the giant ski jump was being completed early in the winter of 1939, the jumpers began preparing the hill for use. As soon as sufficient snow had fallen, the skiers started to cover the hill with snow using shovels and bushel baskets. They would fill the baskets with snow, carry them onto the hill, dump the snow where it was needed, and then pack it into place. When the landing hill was completed, they began to prepare the scaffold in the same way, carrying baskets of snow up the scaffold. By mid-February, the entire scaffold and landing hill were covered, packed, smoothed and raked. The final preparations were completed, and the hill was ready for jumping. The first authorized jumps on Pine Mountain took place on Tuesday, Feb. 14. They were not publicized, and only about 200 spectators attended. Seven ski jumpers from the Kiwanis Ski Club each took several jumps on the hill. Walter Brottlund, as originally planned, was the first jumper, and the others were Mauno Pera, Jack Paquette, Billy Pulkinen, Gale Eymer, Clifford Lindstrom and Lyle Munson. Pulkinen had the longest ride, approximately 230 feet on his second jump. He remarked afterwards that the hill was excellent and predicted a record tournament. The first official rider in the first tournament on Feb. 21, 1939, was Brottlund, president of the Kiwanis Ski Club and defending national Senior Class champion. His name would be forever remembered as the first official skier in the first official tournament at Pine Mountain. The highlight of the tournament was Bob Roecker’s 257-foot jump in the first round. That ride was the longest standing jump of the tournament, established the first hill record at Pine Mountain, and also set a new North American distance record. On his second jump, Roecker, representing the Duluth Ski Club, sailed 270 feet but fell, costing him another new record and a shot at the Class A title. Jim

FROM LEFT, AT the Bloudkova Velikankain in Planica, Slovenia, are Bor Pavlovcic of Slovenia, Martin Hamann of Germany and Andreas Granerud Buskum of Norway. Pavlovcic and Buskum both will compete this weekend at Pine Mountain.
Germany’s Hamann prevailed at Planica RATECE, Slovenia — Martin Hamann of Germany won the Continental Cup competition in Planica, Slovenia, on Jan. 27, the circuit’s most recent event. The 21-year-old posted jumps of 454 feet and 415 feet in changing wind conditions and took his first ever win. “I felt really good today, it was nice to compete here and I had a lot of fun. I’m glad that I could achieve my first Continental Cup victory, but I still have to work on my landing,” he said. Local hero Bor Pavlovcic, the winner of the previous day’s competition, had the longest jump of the event with 476 feet in the first round, landing three meters beyond the official record on his home hill. Andreas Granerud Buskum was in the Top 3 of both competitions in Planica. After his second place finish on Saturday, the Norwegian finished third on Sunday. Clemens Aigner of Austria leads the overall ranking of the COC with 513 points, Hamann is now second with 463 points, and Robin Pedersen of Norway follows in third with 437 points.

US records set many times at Pine Mountain IRON MOUNTAIN — The U.S. ski jumping distance record has been shattered or matched many times on Pine Mountain since 1939. Only two jumpers have the distinction of breaking the record twice at Giant Pine Mountain — Jumping Joe Perrault of Ishpeming and Armin Kogler of Austria. In 1949, Perrault accomplished the feat with one of the greatest performances in the history of the hill. Perrault sailed 293 and 297 feet as he outdistanced two world champions, Matt Pietikainen of Finland and Peter Hugsted of Norway. In the 1980 Pine Mountain PreOlympic tournament, Kogler broke the record of 385 feet he set in 1979 when he soared 399 feet to establish a new U.S. ski jumping distance mark. Kogler sailed 421 feet in 1979 but fell on his landing. Bob Roecker of Duluth, Minn., was the first jumper to put Pine Mountain “on the map” when he traveled 257 feet for a new distance record in the inaugural tournament of 1939. Roecker’s record fell by the wayside in 1941 as Alf Engen surpassed it by 10 feet with a jump of 267 feet. Toger Tokle cracked the record in Leavenworth, Wash., with a 273-foot ride and then smashed his own standard with a 288-foot effort at Hyak, Wash. Tokle bettered his own record again in the 1942 Pine Mountain meet with a 289-footer. The new mark didn’t last long as it was surpassed three times at Pine Mountain later that year. Perrault did it the first time when he sailed 293 feet. Pietikainen took the record away from Perrault with 294-footer, but Jumping Joe came back with a 297 foot effort to regain the distance crown and sweep top honors in the tournament. Gordon Wren tied the record at Steamboat Springs, Colo., in 1950 and Billy (The Kid) Olson equaled it again on Pine Mountain that same year. Although the first official 300-foot jump was not recorded until 1955, Ralph Thorsen of Kingsford leaped 315 during practice in 1948. In 1955, Rudy Maki of Ishpeming became the first jumper to hit the 300foot mark in official competition. Maki was the 1955 national champion. He also was a member of the 1956 and 1960 U.S. Olympic teams.
STEFAN THURNBICHLER OF Austria soared 471 feet at Pine Mountain in 2009, setting the official hill record. Maki, a former international ski jumping judge who died earlier this year, is enshrined in the National Ski Hall of Fame in Ishpeming. Ansten Samuelsten was the next record-setter with a 316 foot jump at Steamboat Springs in 1951. A virtual unknown, Jim Brennan, matched that at Pine Mountain in 1960. John Balfanz, one of the more flamboyant jumpers, established a new mark in 1962 at Westby, Wis., when he leaped 317 feet. Pekka Tirkkinen of Finland tied the record later that year at Pine Mountain. The record was broken three more times before Balfanz returned it to Pine Mountain with 325 foot jump in the 1965 tournament. In 1968, Adrian Watt set another U.S.
distance record at Pine Mountain when he soared 337 feet during the Olympic tryouts. Jerry Martin, one of the most popular jumpers in the history of Giant Pine Mountain, flew a record 345 feet in the 1971 Pine Mountain competition. Austria’s Gebhart Aberer put his name in the record book at Pine Mountain when he jumped 371 feet in 1978. A new hill record of 459 feet was set by Masahiko Harada of Japan in the 1996 competition and was matched by Finland’s Kalle Keituri in 2002. Stefan Kaiser of Austria set a hill record at 468 feet in 2006. However, he finished sixth in the competition. Then, Stefan Thurnbichler of Austria set a hill record of 471 feet in 2009, but finished second.
