PRC launches an SMS Donation Campaign for Japan quake victims Following the unprecedented 8.9 magnitude quake that shook Japan Friday afternoon causing extensive damages to lives and properties, the Philippine Red Cross launched a fund-drive through SMS Donation in support of the Japanese Red Cross Society’s (JRCS) response to the emergency situation. JRCS is an active supporter of PRC in times of disasters and other emergencies. It is also a partner in its several programs, including the Primary Health Care Project. PRC Chairman Richard J. Congratulations to Darlene Escano for winning the Overall Figure Championship in the recently concluaded Arnold Amateur Figure Championship last March 3. Darlene was born in Novaliches in Quezon City where her relatives still lives. Darlene and her parents left the Philippines when she was a year old and moved to Papua New Guinea for 8 years then moved to Australia in 1987 where she is living until this day.

He enjoins every Filipino to do their share and help the people of Japan. The PRC has earlier alerted its disaster action teams for immediate deployment to Japan in case the need arises. Back Building 101 Photography by Julio Arenas

By: Matt Weik Introduction to Back Building 101 A new course is available at Weik University on building a massive back. Those interested in sitting through an easy course, no need to look any further because class has just begun. Everyone is guaranteed an “A” for the course as long as you sit through the course and pay attention (you can take notes if you wish). From there, all you have to do is take what you learned from the course and utilize it in the gym for massive back gains. Let’s start with the basics of Chapter 1 and then get into more detail later on in the course.

The Traps:

Another powerful muscle of the back is the trapezius. The traps run all the way down the upper section of the spinal cord and attaches at the middle of your back. The traps have a couple main functions including scapular adduction (bringing the shoulder blades together), scapular depression (pulling the shoulder blades down), and scapular elevation (shrugging).

The Lats:

Chapter 1: Anatomy of the Back Let’s start off by explaining the anatomy of the back. It’s not very complicated and not much to it. Once you understand how the back works, you will find it easier to visualize your back workouts.

The largest muscle of your back is by far the lats. The latissimus dorsi starts all the way up at the upper end of the humerus, and runs all the way down to the pelvic girdle. The lats function is to pull the arm down towards the pelvis.

Smaller Muscles:

There are also some smaller muscles that aid in movement of the back such as the teres major and the rhomboids. The teres major is found at the outside edge of the shoulder blade and attaches all the way up at the humerus. The main role of the teres major is to bring the arm towards your back. The rhomboids are found on the spinal column and they attach to the middle of the shoulder blade. The rhomboids are used to bring the shoulder blades together. There are also a whole bunch of little muscles in the back, which run along your spine. There is the erector spinae, which includes the longissimus, spinalis, and the iliocostalis. The erector spinae is a group of muscles that are in and support the spine as well as extend the spine. The erector spinae muscles are actually attached to the vertebrae, pelvis, and also to the ribs.

Chapter 2: Different Parts of the Back Different exercises hit different parts of the back. For instance, doing wide grip pulldowns targets the outter back while doing close grip rows targets the middle of the back. It’s important to hit all parts of the back to create overall back development. The last thing you want is imbalances with your back muscles. To create a nice V-taper you need overall development. By creating a fully developed back, you can still have a waist larger than you want and still look like you have a massive upper body. Hitting the lats will help widen your back while hitting the middle of your back help pull out details. Bodybuilding is all about muscular development and creating an illusion that makes you look larger than you really are. Look at any successful bodybuilder and you will see a well-developed back. Huge slabs of muscle popping out from every nook and cranny of their back. That is the look you want to achieve.

Course Conclusion When it comes down to it you want to focus on the mind-muscle connection. You should really feel each rep and feel the muscle working. If you don’t feel an exercise in your back, then you are probably doing it wrong or are using a weight that you can’t handle and are using more than just your back.

Workout #2

Most of all have fun with your workouts. If you aren’t having fun, then what’s the point? Utilize what you learned in this course and see where it takes you. Good luck and see you at graduation!

Rosa-Maria Romero Rosa-Maria Romero has established herself as one of IFBB’s top Figure athletes after her second consecutive invitation to compete at the 2011 Arnold Classic Ms Figure International, the most prestigious event for Professional Figure Competitors. Having only picked up her first set of weights in 2003, after the birth of her two children (Dylan & Jaime), she went on to compete in her first show, the WNSO-ANB Australian Figure Championships taking top honours and winning her first National Title. It’s been up hill since day one and at age 35, she is showing no signs of slowing down. Rosa was very athletic growing up and played many sports including netball, tennis & field hockey. Naturally a competitive person, it was evident she would take the bodybuilding world by storm when she first stepped out on stage in 2003. It’s not every day someone competes for the first time and takes out a National title! It was at this point that Rosa discovered a true passion for the sport and set out to achieve her goal of turning Pro and competing on the Olympia stage. Her dream came true in 2010 when she placed third at the Pro Figure show in Phoenix, making her the first female ever from Australia to qualify for the Figure Olympia.

Photography by Julio Arenas

Any person who has seen Rosa compete will always comment on her gracefulness and confidence as she performs every move. She is thankful for her extensive background in dance that she commenced at a very young age. Her first dance lesson was at the age of three and over the years she performed at lots of eisteddfods, functions, television shows and concerts. She studied contemporary jazz, ballet, tap, character and flamenco, however, became extremely passionate about flamenco, the traditional dance from Spain and this brought her closer to her culture and background. Her parents were born in Spain and immigrated to Australia in 1961. Her Grand mother was born and raised in the Philippines. Rosa is so proud of her culture and background and believes she would not be where she is today without her traits and heritage.

IP 18

At the age of 16, Rosa established her very own Flamenco Dance School (Spanish Rose Dance Studio). Her students ranged from children as young as 2yrs through to adults. She also began teaching Aerobics at various Health Clubs and schools as had become a certified Fitness Trainer and Aerobics Instructor.

Shortly after, she was introduced to competitive aerobics and competed at State and National level. Rosa won the NSW state title and was runner up in the Nationals. In 1995 Rosa was selected to be a part of popular TV show Aerobics Ozstyle and worked as a Fitness Presenter for Channel 10 Australia. With numerous titles under her belt, Rosa has been crowned Miss Australia 3 times. In 2006, she was granted Pro Status after placing 4th at the IFBB World Women’s Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Championships in Santa Susana Spain, making her the highest ever placed Australian female in the sports history at this event. Rosa currently resides in Sydney Australia and has committed herself to the health and fitness industry, promoting the sport worldwide. She has established herself

as Australasia’s favorite fitness model appearing on numerous covers including Iron Man, Oxygen Magazine, New Zealand Fitness and is frequently on television promoting fitness and beauty products. Rosa is South Pacific’s/Oceania’s number one IFBB Pro Figure athlete & officially ranked 10th in the world (Professional Figure). She is the first Australasian female to grace the Arnold Classic Figure International stage, an invitation only event and the most prestigious for Professional Figure competitors. She is also the first female from down under to have qualified for the Figure Olympia in Las Vegas & without a doubt ‘Australia’s most successful exponent of the sport of all time.’ CONGRATULATIONS to Rosa on her second consecutive invitation to compete at the 2011 Arnold Classic Ms Figure International, featuring the top 16 athletes from around the world. FITNESS MOM

Genevieve Corneta Genevieve Corneta, is a registered physical therapist, a mom with 6 kids namely Rochelle, Emmanuel, Carlos Alberto Jr., Giana Marie, Tara Jassica and Geneve Anne. Genie is married to Carlos Amar Tayag.

THE DAILY MOM

As with other moms, a typical Monday to Friday regimen for Genie will be like this. Genies’ day starts at 5am but it starts with a cardio routine before her first meal at 6:30am. After dropping her kids to daycare, she is then off to the gym for personal training from 7:30am to 8am and that’s from Monday to Friday. Her day is spent mostly looking after Physical Therapy patients and then back to the gym for priority workout before going home.

IP 22

www.ironpinoy.com

THE COMPETING MOM

Genie loves to exercise but she never got into serious training until June of 2007. After a year she competed for figure over 40 in 2008 at a local NPC show. Then another NPC show in 2009 in the above 40 Bikini category. She got hooked and since then, it has become a lifestyle.

THE MOTIVATING MOM

Her greatest motivation is her health. It is her most precious wealth and asset. The workout in itself is a motivation and she always feels better after a workout. Genies’ diet is clean and she eats every 2-3 hours with 6 small meals. She then top it off with a gallon of water per day. Genie competes because I believe in preserving ones health. It is one avenue where one can be a model of Good Health and Wellness. It needs a ton of discipline to change her from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy one. She has endured the process of both developing muscle tone and the last 2 weeks prior to competition which is challenging you with low carbohydrate intake and reducing the water under the skin to show the muscles she has worked hard for months at end. It is that great feeling of achievement and fitting into the clothes you want to wear are some of the “precious side-effects” of preparing for a show. Genies’ future plans are to compete with each time raising the level and to be a model of good health by promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle. With God, and having a world class personal trainer like Mr. Lloyd Dollar and real friends like Timogene Mencio, all things are possible.

FITNESS IS AGELESS

Interview by Bong Pico Edited by Michelle Rio

I am Bernardo M. Lirag, formerly an accountant and banker, now a businessman and an executive. I have been married for 40 years now to Elizabeth Ver Romack with 4 daughters – Tina, Pia, Sarah, Nikki. I run two companies at the same time. Working at Asia Pacific Medical & Diagnostics, Inc. (“APMD”), Philippines,a healthcare company providing services to major corporations, as President & Chief Operating Officer since 2003 (www.apdiags.com) and at OEM Audio Plus Incorporated (“OEM”), Los Angeles, California, USA, an audio systems company providing enhancement products to major car manufacturers, as Chairman & Chief Executive Officer since 2007(www.oemaudioplus.com),I always have to start my day at 8 am. Since I run 2 companies in 2 different countries, I divide my time according to their active time zones. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:00p.m. I teleconference with the Chief Operating Officer of OEM in California and OEM Production Group Head in the Philippines. From 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. I focus on APMD. In particular, Monday is devoted to the Executive Committee and special projects, Tuesday to the Sales Group, Wednesday to the Management Committee and Finance Committee. Sometimes I teleconference with OEM between 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

WORKING OUT IS IN THE MAN’S SYSTEM Having that hectic schedule everyday does not make me lazy to go to the gym. I still work out 3 times a week: 5:00 p.m.7:00 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; and 12:00 p.m.-2:00p.m. on Saturdays. As far as I remember, working out has been in my system for quite some time now. In my youth until college days, I was always into basketball. I was very thin as a teenager (i.e. 115 lbs at 17 years old); so my mother got me a trainer – ELPIDIO DOROTEO (former fitness trainer of President Marcos, a former Mr. Philippines and founding head of Siglakas). I gained about 10 lbs. of muscle in about 3 months. This was the start of my appreciation for formal fitness training. It wasn’t until 1981 when I turned 31 that I returned to the gym for serious training. This lasted 2 years. In 2005 I returned to regular workouts at the gym purely for health reasons. I had seriously damaged my right rotator cuff playing my first love – golf – and my physical therapist advised me to continue strengthening it at the gym. I had been an avid golfer for over 20 years. I found my second love – Slimmers World Pasay Road Branch. I have been a member since 2000 and have been regularly working out for the last 6 years with a fitness trainer – Carl Speras 2005-2006, Frank de la Cruz 2006-2008, Argie Samson 20082010, Mark Galvez 2010 to present.

IP 24

www.ironpinoy.com

The only way to achieve these is to have a healthy lifestyle – enough sleep, proper diet (i.e. food, vitamins and supplements), proactive exercise (i.e. cardio and strengthening programs). Dr. Henry s. Lodge in his book “Younger Next Year” wrote: LIFE IS AN ENDURANCE RACE. YOU HAVE TO TRAIN FOR IT. CARDIO WILL IMPROVE CIRCULATION AND LENGTHEN YOUR LIFE. WEIGHTS WILL IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THAT LIFE. WITH REGARDS TO DIETING With regards to my diet, I believe that too much of anything is not good for anyone at any age. We all basically know what food to avoid eating excessively. But to know precisely the specific type of food to avoid, one must have a thorough medical/physical examination. In my case, I don’t drink alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. My favorite drink which I take at least twice a day is kalamansi or orange juice. I use olive oil, dilluted salt (i.e. Morton Salt Balance; Pan Salt) and natural sweeteners (i.e. Splenda, coconut sugar). My diet consists mainly of steamed, stewed, grilled or barbecued fish and lean beef, a lot of fresh fruits. I eat 5-to-6 times a day – BREAKFAST, SNACK, LUNCH, SNACK, BIG MERIENDA, LIGHT DINNER (at least 3 hours before I sleep). I SEQUENCE the meals – load up on carbohydrates before working out, consume low-calorie powerbars while working out and NO FATTY, HIGHLY-CALORIC FOODS AFTER 6PM. I don’t have a “CHEAT DAY” in the week. I occasionally have “CHEAT MOMENTS”, timed just before work-outs.

JOINING GREAT BODIES 2010 My decision to compete in Great Bodies was based on my unyielding belief in my ability (to improve my body and to tackle the Q&A) and my profound trust in my trainers (to provide the guidance). It’s 90% PLANNING, 10% EXECUTION; so I prepared – I got the help of CHARLES DE AUSEN to prepare me for the aero routine and creative posing; I endured his tough regimen of stretching and anaerobic conditioning 2.5 hours a day, 3 days a week; my attendance was perfect – 6 days a week, alternating days for weights with Mark Galvez and cardio with Charles. My RESTING HEART RATE prior to Great Bodies ranged between 58 and 60 BEATS PER MINUTE. Now it’s between 49 and 51 BPM. FUTURE FITNESS GOALS I am preparing for the 2015 Great Bodies. I will be 66 years old. I am also developing a comprehensive program for 50-year-olds and above based on my personal experience, reference books and experts in the fields of nutrition and fitness training. I plan to share it with my clients as a fitness trainer at Slimmers World International after i retire, hopefully by 2014. WHAT BERNIE WISHES TO IMPART During the 2010 Great Bodies competition, I said, IT’S NEVER TOO LATE. No matter what your age is. Have thorough medical tests done at Asia Pacific Medical & Diagnostics, get clearance to workout from your doctor, enroll at Slimmers World International and get yourself a personal fitness trainer now! I DID IT! SO CAN YOU!

WHAT KEEPS HIM GOING: Most people wonder how come I am so into this kind of lifestyle. Here are my motivations: Reason No. 1: I want to live past 90. I intend to play with my grandchildren’s children. Reason No. 2: There are millions of fragile senior citizens. I do not want to be one. I want the quality of my life to be much better.

What’s New Apple Launches iPad 2

All New Design is Thinner, Lighter & Faster with FaceTime, Smart Covers & 10 Hour Battery SAN FRANCISCO—March 2, 2011—Apple® today introduced iPad™ 2, the next generation of its magical device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading ebooks and much more. iPad 2 features an entirely new design that is 33 percent thinner and up to 15 percent lighter than the original iPad, while maintaining the same stunning 9.7-inch LED-backlit LCD screen. iPad 2 features Apple’s new dual-core A5 processor for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics and now includes two cameras, a front-facing VGA camera for FaceTime® and Photo Booth®, and a rear-facing camera that captures 720p HD video, bringing the innovative FaceTime feature to iPad users for the first time. Though it is thinner, lighter, faster and packed with new features, iPad 2 still delivers up to 10 hours of battery life* that users have come to expect. iPad 2 is available in black or white, features models that run on AT&T’s and Verizon’s 3G networks, and introduces the innovative iPad 2 Smart Cover in a range of vibrant polyurethane and rich leather colors. “With more than 15 million iPads sold, iPad has defined an entirely new category of mobile devices,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “While others have been scrambling to copy the first generation iPad, we’re launching iPad 2, which moves the bar far ahead of the competition and will likely cause them to go back to the drawing boards yet again.” With the new front and rear cameras, iPad 2 users can now make FaceTime calls to millions of iPhone® 4, iPod touch® and Mac® users so they can see family and friends anywhere there is Wi-Fi. Photo Booth lets you apply fun visual effects, including eight photo special effects like Squeeze, Twirl and Kaleidoscope, to photos captured by either camera. iPad 2 comes with iOS 4.3, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, with new features including faster Safari® mobile browsing performance; iTunes® Home Sharing; enhancements to AirPlay®;** the choice to use the iPad side switch to either lock

the screen rotation or mute audio; and Personal Hotspot to share an iPhone 4 cellular data connection over Wi-Fi.*** Additional iPad 2 features include a built-in gyro for advanced gaming; HSUPA support for enhanced 3G upload speeds on iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G on AT&T, and HDMI Video Mirroring that lets users mirror their iPad screen on an HDTV using an optional adaptor. The innovative new iPad 2 Smart Cover provides protection for the iPad screen while maintaining its thin and lightweight profile. Designed with a unique selfaligning magnetic hinge that makes it easy to attach and remove, the new iPad 2 Smart Cover automatically wakes iPad 2 when it’s opened and puts it to sleep when it’s closed, and has a soft microfiber lining to help keep the screen clean. The Smart Cover also folds into a stand for typing or viewing videos and is available in vibrant polyurethane for $39 or rich leather for $69 in a range of colors, including a (PRODUCT) RED one which helps support the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. Apple also introduced two new apps: iMovie® and GarageBand® for iPad, both available on the App Store℠ for just $4.99 each. With iMovie, iPad 2 users can shoot and edit videos right on their iPad and post their movies to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and their MobileMe℠ gallery; watch them on their iPod®, iPhone or iPad; as well as view them on their HDTV using AirPlay and Apple TV®. GarageBand turns your iPad into a collection of touch instruments and 8-track recording studio, allowing you to perform with onscreen keyboards, guitars, drums and basses using multi-touch gestures–even if you don’t play a musical instrument. iPad 2 runs almost all of the over 350,000 apps available on the App Store and there are more than 65,000 native iPad apps available from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. The iTunes Store gives iPad users access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 14 million songs, over 50,000 TV episodes and over 10,000 films including over 3,500 in stunning high definition video.
