Welcome to Lawrence County W
elcome to Lawrence County, the southernmost area in the great state of Ohio. The county shares borders with West Virginia and Kentucky, which provide access to shopping of all types and many cultural events. The main highways are U.S. 52, Ohio 7, 243, 775 and 93. There are six bridges that connect Lawrence County to its neighboring states. The most recent addition is the Oakley C. Collins Memorial Bridge in downtown Ironton, which
opened in the autum of 2016, after four years of construction. It replaced the Ironton-Russell Bridge, which built in 1922. Lawrence County was organized on Dec. 20, 1816. It was named for Capt. James Lawrence, who when wounded on the deck of his ship, The Chesapeake, famously uttered the line “Don’t give up the ship” The Lawrence County Courthouse was built in 1908. The county was once rich in iron, which gave rise to the names of its county seat, Ironton.

County named for officer who coined
'Don't give up the ship!'
R
emember that famous Civil War battle every child learns about in school? The battle between the warships, the Monitor and the Merrimac. Guess from where the iron for the Union ship, the Monitor, came? That’s right. Lawrence County. Bordering the beautiful Ohio River, Lawrence is a county rich in industrial history. For almost a century, it was the international headquarters of the pig iron industry. Thousands of tons of iron were produced through almost all of the 19th century. Supplies of iron went out not only to the developed parts of the United States, but also across the At-
lantic Ocean to England, which also used that iron for its battleships. There was a time when Lawrence County was a part of Washington County, which reached from the Scioto River, near where Portsmouth is today, to the Pennsylvania border. Adams County was first carved from Washington County, taking the territory west of the upper boundary of the French Grant and of a line running north from the interior point of that boundary. After 1803, all of Lawrence County was included in Gallia, except a few small sections in the eastern part of Elizabeth Township, which belonged to Scioto County. Just a few days
before Christmas in 1816, Lawrence County was formed. It got its name from Capt. James Lawrence, famed American naval officer who battled the British and died from his wounds as he commanded his ship. His death cry, “Don’t give up the ship!”, has become such a lasting part of American history that even small children know it. Lawrence County’s first court of common pleas was organized March 4, 1817. The first election was April 7, 1817, with Joseph Davidson, Joel Bowen and David Spurlock elected county commissioners. Their first meeting was April 21, 1817, at Davidson’s home in Burlington. The county
seat was later moved to Ironton, which was the heart of the county’s pig iron industry. Ironton has a connection to American sports. It was one of the first towns to have a professional sports team with the Ironton Tanks, which lasted from 1919 to 1930. The Tanks began the tradition of a Thanksgiving football game when they played their crosstown rivals, the Lombards. After the Tanks ended, many of the players migrated to the Portsmouth Spartans. The Spartans team was bought and moved to Detroit. They were renamed the Lions and kept up the Thanksgiving Day football tradition.

Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade
I
t was 150 years ago that Ironton saw it’s first Memorial Day Parade. It is the longest running parade in America, attracting an estimated 10,000 to 25,000 people who line the streets of Ironton to show their pride and patriotism. Another 2,000 march in the procession that begins and ends at the Lawrence County Courthouse. In 1868, Gen. John Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued an order calling for a day to be set aside to honor those killed on both sides of the war between the states. From that order came a procession that has marched through the annals of local history. A riderless horse leads the procession followed by veterans of
the different branches of the armed services. The parade includes marching bands, floats depicting various aspects of patriotism, and local civic groups and government officeholders. One veteran is selected each year for special recognition as honorary grand marshal. The parade committee each year also selects from its own ranks a grand marshal and parade commander. In 1978, the parade received official national recognition: according to the “Congressional Record,” U.S. Congressman Clarence Miller sponsored a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives that proclaimed it the oldest continual Memorial Day parade in the nation.
In his resolution, Miller wrote “It is gratifying to know that for more than a century, Ironton has placed a high priority on honoring those who have fought for America in wars spanning the globe.” Memorial Day is actually observed for an entire weekend. In the days leading up to the parade are the Past Grand Marshal’s Dinner, Navy Night and the memorial service at Woodland Cemetery. The parade is coordinated by the Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade Committee, which meets periodically throughout the year and every Monday as Memorial Day nears. The Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade is at 10 a.m. every Memorial Day.

Stroll through history L
awrence County has a fascinating history that includes wealth, power, intrigue, ingenuity and romance. That history is brought to life each fall when the Lawrence County Historical Society produces its annual historical walk at Woodland Cemetery. The historians don period costumes
and recount the stories of some of the county’s most famous — and infamous — departed citizens. Who was George Bay and what contribution did this riverboat captain make to regional history? Who was Martha Ellen Bloxon Johnson and what famous song did she inspire? Who was the first child born in Ironton? Which of
Ironton’s most illustrious citizens were also heavily involved in the Underground Railroad? Visitors get the answers to these and other questions as they make their way across cemetery grounds. The annual event, usually held in late September or early October, is a self-guided tour that draws thousands of people each year.

Strong foundation Ironton founded in 1849 as hub of America’s iron industry
T
he City of Ironton was founded in 1849 by John Campbell, a man who was instrumental in creating much of the area’s iron industry. His vision was shared by railroad companies and financiers, who saw a need for a commercial center in the Hanging Rock Iron Furnace Region. Pig iron was one of the most important commercial enterprises in Ironton’s early history. Ironton was chartered as a city in 1865. The first mayor of Ironton, James Merrill, was elected in 1851. Also in that year, Ironton’s first post office opened. In 1868, the city began paying tribute to fallen Civil War soldiers with a Memorial Day Parade. Today, the tradition continues, more than 150 years after that first observance. In the past, Ironton and its citizens weathered numerous natural
disasters, perhaps the best known is the Flood of 1937. The floodwater inundated two-thirds of the city. A sign on the second story in the lobby of the Ironton City Center shows how high the water reached. A floodwall was later built to prevent such wide-scale flooding from happening again. During the Great Depression, Ironton opted for a city manager form of government and other reorganization of government. This government lasted for approximately 50 years. In 1980, the city government changed to its current system, a charter-mayor form. Ironton’s government consists of a mayor and seven council members with supporting agencies to conduct the city’s dayto-day operations. During the 20th century, the economy eventually transitioned as heavy industry jobs decreased.
