Great debate: Stacking TVs and fireplaces

(BPT) — When choosing a focal point for a room, designers and homeowners alike often plan for a single feature - windows, TVs, artwork, or fireplaces - to take center stage. However, the explosion of flat screen TVs for every room in the home has created a debate - can you really have more than one focal point? Online resources like houzz and various design blogs have made it easy for homeowners to discuss that question, with many in favor of combining two fea-

tures that typically stand out on their own - fireplaces and TVs on one wall to blend the warm and comforting aesthetics of a fireplace with easy TV access. “The question is if a TV can and should - be mounted on the wall above a fireplace, combining the two elements into one focal point, since they’re traditionally used individually,” says Becky Scribner, brand director of Heat & Glo. “The good news is that the TV and fireplace can occupy the same wall with a few minor

install tweaks. It can work - from both a technical and a design standpoint.” In large rooms with adequate space, TVs above the fireplace can create an ideal angle of vision. In fact, stacking TVs and fireplaces can be a great choice for several reasons: • Easy design: Combining two elements in one location makes it easier to design the rest of the room, allowing for a single grouping of chairs and couches. In some room designs, it also leaves room for other areas to be turned into reading corners or small work spaces. • Enhanced functionality: Open-concept floor plans and homes that have the kitchen, eating and living area combined into an open great room are perfect for placing the TV and fireplace on the same wall. This arrange-

ment provides optimal viewing of the TV while cooking in the kitchen or relaxing in the eating area, while also incorporating the warmth and comfort of the fireplace. • Subtle style: Higher placement makes a TV less obvious when a person first walks into the room. Visitors notice a beautiful fireplace, especially when lit, and may only observe the TV if it’s turned on. Plus, there are other decorating tricks designers can use if a homeowner really doesn’t want the TV to stand out, like hiding it behind a painting or mirrors. The TV can be revealed with a push of a remote control button, causing the painting or mirrors to slide over or up, and then hidden again with another push of a button when the TV is turned off. update, consider placing your TV above the fireplace to create a warm, welcoming and inviting space. You may also consider adding a fireplace to your existing TV room for added relaxation and ambiance. Heat & Glo provides installation information to homeowners, and the brand’s

website includes information about the spacing recommended between the fireplace and the mantel (if desired), as well as spacing guidelines between the mantel and the TV. Consumers can also find a local dealer at heatnglo.com to help with installation and finishing.

(BPT) — Whether in a workshop, garden or garage, American men have always enjoyed their personal spaces. With the rise of flat-screen technology, having a “man cave” became an official home improvement trend. In fact, a 2013 survey by online retailer Newegg found that more than half of American homes now have a man cave. Now, after more than a decade of partying, man caves have matured. Modern man caves go far beyond pricey audio-visual components, a refrigerator and a couple of worn-out recliners. Today, luxury and entertainment features share space with practical ones, and when perfectly balanced, create a room to meet a variety of needs - relaxation, fun, family time and even work. If you’re ready to create a man cave in your home, or take your existing guy-centric space to the next level, here are a handful of upgrades sure to make your cave feel like a castle:

Tech heaven

A TV is a must for any man cave, but it’s no longer enough

to simply have a huge flat screen and a remote control. To really be worthy of your man cave, whether plasma, LED or LCD, a flat screen should have all the latest bells and whistles, including Internet access, 3-D, high definition and a fullmotion wall mount. Surround sound and satellite signal (for visual and audio content) are also musts. Tech needs don’t stop with A/V requirements, however. Creating a computer center, complete with Wi-Fi, laptop and multiple screens, not only enhances gaming opportunities, it can allow your man cave to double as an office. A refrigerator is a man cave staple, and plenty of high-tech versions are available for smaller spaces like a converted basement or garage. Add a wine or beer cooler, or even a humidor to round out your tech needs.

Liquid realities

Man caves often wind up in a converted garage, finished basement or bonus room over the garage - scenarios that can make it difficult to incorporate running water into your plan. Cutting through the concrete

floor of a garage or basement to install drainage can make adding a bathroom or wet bar cost-prohibitive, and it may be inconvenient to open drywall to add traditional plumbing to a bonus room. Above-floor plumbing can make it easy and cost-effective to add water-dependent features that are both practical and luxurious. “If you want to add a bathroom or wet bar to a smaller space, or one with a concrete floor, above-floor plumbing overcomes many of the challenges created by traditional plumbing,” says Regis Saragosti, CEO of SFA Saniflo Inc., a manufacturer of abovefloor plumbing products. Macerating systems for toilets (also known as up-flush plumbing) make it easy, costeffective and quick to add a bathroom to a man cave. Drain pumps, often used for kitchens and sinks, are useful in creating a fully functional wet bar. To learn more about above-floor plumbing and its applications, visit www.saniflo.com.

Think outside the cave walls

The very concept of a man cave is about going your own

way, but early iterations seemed to follow the same basic, frat-style formula of sportsthemed decor, cheap seating and high-priced tech toys. Today, man caves are as individual as the men inhabiting them. Look for ways to personalize the space for your interests and needs. Have a passion for working out but don’t always feel like having an audience or trekking to the gym? Include some fitness equipment in your man cave. Prefer to get some work done late at night and don’t want to keep the family up? Park a desk and PC in a convenient corner. Love golf but can’t stand pool? Ditch that man-cave staple - a billiard table - and put in a mini putting green. Finally, don’t overlook the fact that the king of the castle (or man cave) might want to invite his queen into the space. In fact, 89 percent of the men surveyed by Newegg said they would welcome a member of the opposite sex into their man cave. So be sure your man cave includes comfortable seating, dimmable lighting and a film collection that goes beyond sports and action flicks.

Home weatherization checklist begins now By RALPH ANSAMI

ransami@yourdailyglobe.com

Whether it’s leaving for Florida for the winter, or staying in Big Snow Country for the long haul, it’s time to begin planning home winterization. Mike Peterson, at Giovanoni’s True Value Hardware in Hurley, on Monday said with temperatures forecast in the 40s for Thursday, people were coming in to buy insulation kits. Window insulation kits, weather stripping and the goop that comes in cans to plug up holes are popular items sold at the store at this time of year, he said. Peterson said homeowners save money in the long run by better insulating their homes.

If you go

For people heading to warmer climes, important issues to consider are common sense matters, such as making sure water lines are drained, unplugging all appliances and turning down the thermostat. Without proper preparation, winter can turn out to be more costly than anticipated. If water lines aren’t drained and the furnace fails, it can mean frozen pipes that burst when no one is around, according to wiki How to do anything. The water supply should be turned off completely at the main supply point. For preventing water in a toilet trap from evaporating, one trick from wiki How is to raise the lid and seat and cover the bowl with saran wrap. Don’t forget the refrigerator. The water filter should be removed, as should any type of filter canister. It’s also a good idea to empty freezers in case the electricity fails. If there’s a power outage

and food thaws, then refreezes, it can be dangerous to consume. Wiki How says one way to determine if there has been a thaw and refreeze is to freeze a container of water and then place a coin on top. If the coin has sunk, the freezer has thawed and refrozen. For people who leave their homes for long periods, it’s recommended shutting off hot water heaters completely. Other tips are to place some type of rodent repellent under the sink and on kitchen counters and remove food from the pantry that might attract mice. All fire hazards should be removed and flues and dampers should be closed. Don’t leave anything outdoors that can be blown away by a strong wind, making sure outdoor furniture is stored away. Lock garages, especially those containing expensive vehicles or valuable items, and block garage window views to avoid burglaries. It’s also good advice to make it look like someone is actually at home by setting up light timers that go on automatically in the evenings. Better yet, have friends and neighbors check on the house periodically. Don’t leave any valuables in vacation homes. It’s important to make a checklist of what should be done before leaving and then following it closely. There are many precautions to be taken and writing them down beforehand can be a big help.

If you stay

Winter preparation is also a must for those who stick around to face the snow. Gutters should be cleaned. The Insurance Information Institute recommends hosing

Also, make sure that downspouts carry water away from the house’s foundation to prevent flooding or other water damage. “The rule of thumb is that water should be at least 10 feet away from the house,” said Michael Broili, director of the Well Home Program for the Phinney Neighborhood Association. MSN Real Estate suggests caulking or applying tacky rope

caulk to drafty spots in the house. Seal those leaks with weather-resistant caulk. For bricks, use masonry sealer, which will better stand up to freezing and thawing. The leaks not only allow warm air to escape, but also allow insects to invade. Of course, it’s important to make sure the furnace is functioning properly before winter sets in. Bringing in a furnace inspector is a good idea, as spending $100 can save money in the long run. Check those fil-

ters regularly throughout the winter. It’s also important to make sure air ducts are clean and functioning properly. Tape windows for a few bucks, or use plastic wrap to keep a lot of cold air out of the house. People using wood stoves should make sure chimneys are clean and relatively free of creosote. Look for bird nests or deceased animals. Before freezing nights arrive, make sure valves are shut off inside the house and water lines

are drained, Wrap uninsulated pipes with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation, available at hardware stores. It’s also the time to check smoke alarms, making sure to change the batteries as needed. Detectors should be replaced at least every 10 years. Test them with a small bit of smoke, and not just by pressing the button. Also make sure the fire extinguisher is where it should be, and still works, and invest in a carbon-monoxide detector.

Home renovation starts with good planning, good insurance (BPT) — The United States is a country of renovators and remodelers, judging from the steady growth of home improvement projects across the nation in recent years. People are remodeling their homes at historically high rates, according to the National Association of Homebuilders. Many of these projects are complex and expensive, and too often people neglect to fully protect their assets and bank accounts because they fail to properly assess the risks of major home renovations. There are a few basic things homeowners need to think about before, during and after renovation that will go a long way toward protecting their little piece of the American Dream. One of the most important tasks comes well before even the first nail is hammered. “It always goes back to choosing the right contractor,” says Mark McCormick, technical director of personal risk services at Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. “Embarking on these kinds of projects is an emotional experience, but it’s important to objectively vet your contractors before making a decision about who will be working in your home.” You can’t just pick your contractor at random out of the Yellow Pages or hire them simply because they might have a nice website. Make sure they’ve been in business for a while - 10 or more years is often a good gauge. While not a guarantee of trustworthiness, business longevity shows at least a certain level of stability. Also, companies that have been around longer tend to have connections in the wider community and established reputations that can be checked out. Ask neighbors and friends for their thoughts and get recommendations from people who have been through a remodel. Many times fly-by-night contractors will only give out cellphone numbers, which is a big red flag, so make sure they have a physical address. Also, ask for proof that they are properly licensed and carry the right insurance for themselves and their subcontractors. “It’s always good to get three to five contractors into the vetting process,” McCormick says. “There may be some who have been around for only a year, or you may not be happy with their subs, the price, the scope of work or how they approach your home.

Remodeling tips for homeowners:

1. Carefully vet contractors. 2. Contact your insurance company and get advice about risk mitigation and liabilities. 3. Make sure your contractor and subcontractors have adequate liability insurance. 4. Maintain good records of all agreements and transactions. 5. Never leave valuable personal items in plain view during a project.

You want them to do the work in your castle as if they owned it themselves.” An often-neglected item on the pre-project check list is making sure your insurance is up to the

task. Before work begins, contact your agent and ask if you need to adjust your liability limits or if there is anything you can do to minimize your risk. Larger, more complex projects are inherently more risky, so the insurance company might suggest things like security fencing, cameras or - if the project is really big - a security guard. “If homeowners neglect to tell their insurance agent about a renovation, it puts them at risk from a liability standpoint,” McCormick says. “People might be walking around on roofs, putting in swimming pools, using open flame, putting up siding, all kinds of things. If the policy holder talks to an agent about the

scope of project, the agent can advise an increase in liability coverage if it’s needed.” Throughout the entire process, be sure to keep good records, including all receipts, plans, invoices, canceled checks and all agreements and corre-

spondence with your contractors and subs. Once the remodel is complete, contact your insurance agent for a replacement cost calculation, adjusted to mirror the final project and accounting for the increased replacement value. “Finally — and it’s very com-

mon that people forget about this - don’t give out home security system codes or house keys unless you know specifically who is getting those things,” McCormick said. “Change the codes and the locks after the project is done.”

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT Cheaper-than-you-think upgrades that scream ‘luxury’

wood-burning fireplace to an existing home may be difficult or impossible in many scenarios, modern gas fireplaces can go virtually anywhere - including interior walls. Advancements in the technology to make, operate and insulate gas fireplaces have made adding one a relatively easy process. Direct-vent fireplaces go on exterior walls and eliminate the need for a chimney. Ventfree models are also available for interior locations in a house. The cost of installing a gas fireplace will vary, depending on many factors, including whether you have existing natural gas service to your home and a line in or near the room where you’ll be installing the fireplace. Although not a do-it-yourself job for most homeowners, installing a gas fireplace can cost as little as $3,000.

(BPT) — Hand-planed, reclaimed hardwood floors? Beautiful but pricey. Custom drapery? The cost can be blinding. When it comes to home decorating, it’s easy to blow your budget on one or two upgrades - and maybe that would be OK if those improvements also amped up the drama in your decor. Too often, however, costly decorating ploys disappoint, wearing out or becoming dated before you’ve paid off the financing. Fortunately, a handful of upgrades just scream “luxury” - while the price tags quietly snicker “this look didn’t cost an arm and a leg.” They may not be as cheaply priced as fresh paint or some new throw pillows, but these surprisingly affordable improvements deliver high impact at a manageable cost.

Adding skylights

Wall murals

Luxury, drama and energy efficiency are the trifecta of home decorating and improvement - and few upgrades deliver all three qualities as well as skylights. Because they admit abundant natural light into a room, skylights have a powerful impact. Install Energy Star-qualified, no-leak, solar-powered fresh-air skylights like those from Velux America, and they can help reduce electric bills by providing natural light and passive ventilation. They draw no power and operate by a remote control that can be programmed for multiple functions. Add solar-powered blinds and the cost of the skylights and blinds, as well as installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. What’s more, professional installation costs range from a low of around $900 to a high of about $2,100, with $1,475 being the average, according to HomeAdvisor.com. If you’re only interested in more natural light from above, or if a traditional skylight won’t fit in your space, VELUX Sun Tunnel tubular skylights, which are less expensive to both purchase and install, are ideal for closets, hallways, interior baths and other special spaces. To download a free app that can help you visualize how skylights will look in your home, visit veluxusa.com.

Humans have been painting scenes on the walls of our abodes since the days of cavemen. A wall mural can create virtually any effect you desire in any room of the house - drama in a living room, elegance in a dining room, relaxation in a master bath, cozy comfort in a kitchen or whimsy in a child’s bedroom. While a professional, hand-painted wall mural may cost more than your entire redecorating budget, modern wallpaper murals can allow you to completely alter the look of a room for less than $500. Requiring no paste or trimming, wallpaper murals can easily be installed by the average homeowner. Repositionable varieties can even be taken down and moved from room to room.

Granite bathroom vanities

Granite remains the gold standard of luxury, beauty and function when you’re talking about countertops. Installing granite in a kitchen can be costly, especially if you have a lot of counter space to cover. With smaller vanities and less counter space, however, bathrooms cost much less to outfit in granite. Professionally installed granite bathroom vanities can cost just a few thousand dollars. To get an idea of costs for your bathroom, use an online calculator like those found at remodelingexpense.com.

Simple ideas to refresh your entryway How to create an inviting entrance

Transform your home’s curb appeal with a new front door. With so many new entry door systems to choose from, ranging from single doors, to double-door options, to those accented with decorative glass, or transoms and sidelights, it’s easy to find one that fits your budget and your style. Pella offers stylish wood, fiberglass or steel options. Choose from ENERGY STARqualified design options to create a distinctive look, whether you’re building a new home, remodeling, or simply replacing an old door.

Pick a standout color for your front door

Sticking with your door? A fresh coat of paint will do wonders. Try a bold color to brighten a neutral color scheme. Pick a color that coordinates with your home’s exterior, but dare to be bold with color contrast to add eye appeal.

Update your hardware

Why stop with a fresh coat of paint? Refresh old doors with new hardware. Choose handles and door knockers that complement your home’s exterior design. Pella offers hardware in a variety of finishes, to instantly upgrade exterior doors.

Replace broken or damaged items

Replace broken light fixtures, burned out bulbs and worn out weather-stripping on exterior doors. Pitch that faded wreath, worn out mat, and dead plants, and instead, add a bright new welcome mat and eye-catching seasonal decorations.

Clean up, accent with contrast

Use a little elbow grease and ammonia-free, vinegar-based glass cleaner to wash the windows. Wipe down window and door frames and sweep sills with a dry paint brush or vacuum to remove dirt. See pella.com/news for tips on cleaning windows and doors. Fill flower boxes or containers with boldly-colored plants to accent your front door. If you’ve painted your door red, plant red and white or red and purple flowers to create a designer look. Or if you’re keen on green doors, try purple or orange flowers for contrast.

Illuminate your walkway

Make it easy for others to see

the way to your front door at night. Transform and illuminate walkways with easy-to-install solar lights. Stake them in the ground positioned so solar cells get enough southern exposure for sunlight to recharge nightlights during the day.

Trim bushes, create great container gardens

Landscaping should accent your home, not dominate it. Keep bushes below the bottom sill of your windows to improve your view. Trim or replace overgrown shrubs and trees. Keep plant material trimmed several feet away from your home to minimize damage from wind or insects, and help eliminate a place for prowlers to lurk. Keep your porch and steps clear of clutter and create container gardens to accent your entry. Fill decorative containers with plants that accent your home’s color scheme, front door and landscape design.

(BPT) — There’s no better time than now to give your home the attention it deserves. Give it an annual checkup before cold weather arrives to help add comfort, save energy and cut home maintenance in the long-run. When inspecting your home’s windows and doors, here’s what to check: Inspect interior and exterior finishes: Over time, paint and stain can weather away. Flaking or peeling may mean that it’s time to refinish or replace the unit. When replacing windows or doors, consider factory prefinished wood or fiberglass options from Pella, or vinyl options that don’t need painting or staining, to save time and money. Look for damaged exterior surfaces or signs of leaks: Check your sprinkler system to make sure it’s watering your lawn and landscape, not soaking your windows or doors. Cracked or deteriorated wood may be a sign of water penetration. Leaks can linger and affect interior walls, floors or ceilings, so look closely for discoloration or other moisture signs. If you spot a problem, track its trail. For example, discolored trim around a window might actually be caused by moisture entering a ways away. With a leaky roof, water may run down inside the wall and appear at the window. Contact a professional for help in making home repairs. Clear windowsills and tracks of dirt and debris: Sand, leaves, insects or pine needles stuck in weather-stripping can affect the performance of your windows and doors. Open the windows and clean the opening with a soft brush, like a dry paint brush or vacuum attachment. Do the same for sliding patio doors. Try opening and closing: Open your windows and doors to make sure moving parts work, and units close properly. Replace worn or broken parts. Inspect weather-stripping: Reattach loose weather-stripping around windows or doors, and replace material that’s ripped or torn. Replace or repair broken locks: If locks feel loose or don’t work smoothly, replace them. Keep windows and doors locked when not in use. Locks help hold doors and windows tightly, to lock out rain, wind, snow and insects. Inspect weep and breather holes: Weep holes in the exterior

of windows, allow excess moisture to escape, while breather holes allow air exchange within certain components. Clear blocked holes of dirt or debris with a wire or toothpick. Check exterior sealants and caulk on and around windows and doors. Pay attention to areas susceptible to rain, water and extreme sunlight. Remove dam-

Create a family-friendly bathroom

(BPT) — Mom rules the media room, Johnny loves the basement workshop and the kitchen is Dad’s domain. Gender roles notwithstanding, each family member has one room where he or she enjoys spending more time. One room, however, is equally used and loved — or reviled — by all: the bathroom. If you’ve decided to renovate a bathroom that no one wants to use, it’s important to keep family-friendly upgrades in mind. Approximately 4.3 million American households are multi-generational - with grandparents, parents and children living under one roof - according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It’s more important than ever to keep the needs of all family members in mind when undertaking a renovation project, especially in a key room like the bathroom. Here are a few areas for attention when you’re upgrading a bathroom for the whole family: Safer, more satisfying showering If your family has older members, grab bars in the shower are necessary for safety. They can also be helpful for youngsters learning to manage the shower on their own. A safer shower doesn’t end with grab bars, however. Have you ever considered the safety — not to mention ease of use — of the shower door? New technology from Sterling improves the usability and safety

BrandPoint photo

of an often-overlooked part of the shower experience - the door track. The ComforTrack is a flexible bottom track that bends under applied pressure, making it easier and more comfortable to bathe a child (or pet) and virtually eliminating the unpleasant scrapes that con occur with metal tracks. The durable track is also simpler to clean, making it friendlier for the family member cleaning the bathroom. Since durability and cleaning ease are essential in bathrooms that see a lot of use from multiple generations, consider a shower unit that installs without the hassle of caulking, reduces leak risks and reduce maintenance and cleaning time. Shower surrounds like Sterling’s new Ensemble Medley product are

simple to install - within the abilities of most DIYers - and easier to clean. What’s more, the material is stain and scratch-resistant, so it can stand up to use by the most demanding bathers, including the family dog. To further enhance safety in the shower, install slip-resistant flooring and consider a device that prevents unexpected temperature changes — and potential scalding — in showers and faucets. Lightening up for everyone Like any room in your home, the bathroom benefits from layers of lighting. Overhead lighting should keep the room well illuminated for showering and bathing, when you need more light. Lighting around and/or above the mirror is essential for detail work,

like applying makeup or shaving. You’ll also want sources of gentler light for nighttime bathroom visits. Keeping lights low can help make it easier for bathroom users - especially young children - to return to sleep. Dimmers control the intensity of overhead lights, or a simple nightlight may be sufficient to preserve safety and sleep. Natural light can be a welcome addition to a bathroom. Privacy is always a concern, so consider window frosting or even a skylight to admit natural light while preserving modesty. Making it personal for all In bathrooms where people share space, it’s important to make everyone feel at home. Giving each person a dedicated storage spot (such as a shelf, cubby or a cabinet bin beneath the vanity) ensures he or she will feel at home and the bathroom will stay organized. You can further enhance the welcoming feeling by including personal touches like monogrammed towels, hisand-hers accessories or even framed art created by the kids. The kitchen will probably remain the heart of the home, but the bathroom will never lose its vital spot in the lives of American families. If you renovate yours with an eye toward making it more family-friendly, your home-improvement dollars will be well spent - and your family happier.

Chic storage ideas to corral household clutter (BPT) — With the fall season comes cool weather and more time indoors. Snuggling up with blankets and partaking in activities at home can create more clutter than usual around the house. Instead of getting frustrated, it’s easy to add stylish storage to corral extra items. Get organized and keep your home clutter-free with a few smart tips. BrandPoint photo

Neat reading racks

Many people enjoy a good read before counting sheep. However, books, magazines and tablets can just add disarray if left scattered around the bedroom. To combat this type of clutter, add wallmounted magazine racks or crates to hold your reading pieces. Paint a wooden crate using FrogTape Multi-Surface painter’s tape. Add stripes in striking colors for a reading rack that’s functional and fabulous looking. FrogTape is the only tape treated with PaintBlock Technology, which forms a micro-barrier against paint bleed, giving you sharp and precise paint lines. Learn more at frogtape.com. After drying, cut your crate down the middle - you now have two spots for book storage. Install simple wall-hanging brackets to the edges of the crates and attach each to the wall with drywall anchors for a sturdy and safe finish. These are also great for stowing away toys in a child’s playroom or towels in the bathroom.

Boost bedroom storage

If every closet, nook and cranny in your home is occupied, it’s time to look toward other avenues for order. Calm your chaos with under-bed storage

units by transforming old dresser drawers into storage space. Paint the drawers in the color of your choice and drill casters to the bottom for easy rolling access. Slide them under your bed and you can now neatly put away items that were once a nuisance.

Multipurpose seating

Chic ottomans and cushioned benches are great pieces that provide extra seating in family rooms. But in addition to their pleasant outward appearance, many contain hidden storage underneath the lid. Neatly stow away movies, games, blankets and pillows that would otherwise crowd this high-traffic area. Position the furniture as an accent piece or place a lengthy bench along a window for a cozy reading nook, while simultaneously increasing your storage.

Cozy staircase storage

The space under stairs is often overlooked as a storage spot, since it’s usually closed off with drywall. What most homeowners

don’t realize is this tricky triangle is typically hollow, and the “wasted” space can be utilized to store your family’s odds and ends. For extra functionality, transform it into a closet if you’re a DIY weekend warrior. All you’ll need is a couple of days and these steps: • First, frame the door opening for your new closet. Use a drywall saw to create the outline that fits the pre-hung door of your choice. Secure the hinged side to the frame and use wood shims (thin pieces of wood that will properly align the door) to ensure it’s a secure fit within the opening. • Next, you’ll need to create the closet walls inside. Measure the area of the closet and cut sheets of plywood or drywall to those dimensions (depending on how “finished” you’d like the final space to look). Paint the plywood in the color of your choice and install it by nailing it to the existing studs. Just keep in mind that drywall will require a few extra steps, like taping, mudding and sanding before it’s ready to paint. • Now, determine what size storage containers and hooks the space will allow and create shelves and cubbies. Using a nail gun, install ledger strips around the entire closet to support the shelves, making sure they’re level. Secure with screws and install your painted shelves for a cozy — and contained — storage solution. If the construction of this project seems a bit too ambitious, reach out to a trusted contractor to handle the building components. You can tackle the most fun part — painting! Whether you have limited storage or are simply looking for ways to bring order to your home, now is the time to reorganize. With these suggestions, you’ll achieve a modernized and tidy living space, in no time at all.

Winter elements can shorten deck lifespans By RYAN JARVI

rjarvi@yourdailyglobe.com

With winter on its way, and the house prepped and ready for another long, cold season, what can you do about that outdoor deck where you’ve spent so many summer hours grilling or relaxing? Bill Steiger, of Steiger’s Ace Hardware and Home Center in Bessemer, said the decision between paint and stain is personal preference, and both will likely need to be redone every few years. “Paint can peel off just like stain can wear off,” Steiger said. “It depends on how gentle you are with your deck too. If it’s got a lot of foot traffic, if you’re sliding furniture all over the place, or if you have a lot of pets that are coming on and off it all the time, that’s going to bring everything that’s in your yard … onto your deck.” Staining or painting the deck isn’t a project to be put off until just before the snow falls, though. Steiger said summer is the best time to stain or paint, but there are some things people can do during the winter to help lengthen the deck’s lifetime. “Never use salt or ice melt on a deck,” he said. “It will corrode the stain very quickly. The big thing I see people do around here, with all the dirt and salt on the road, is they end up walking up all over their decks,

7

and then that melts off the snow and then corrodes the stain they have on their steps and decks.” Steiger also mentioned the winter elements only compound the damage already incurred from the ultraviolet rays during the summer. “For the conditions around here, we have to stain our decks more frequently than most people just with that combination of UV damage in the summer, and a lot of the salt and dirt and sand that gets tracked on them during winter,” he said. With the amount of snowfall the area gets, a wooden deck can only handle so much weight. “It’s good to shovel the snow off your deck to keep the weight off it, but you’ve got to be careful not to scrape it right down to the bare surface,” Steiger said. Scraping at the wooden boards can put grooves into the deck and hasten the corrosion of stain or paint, and you might see flecking in the spring. For those willing to spend a little extra for decking, Steiger’s said builders can use a composite material, which will fade slightly over time, but is low maintenance. “It’s a little more money than a wood deck,” Steiger said, “but then you’re not staining it every other year, so you save a lot there over the lifetime of homeownership.” Ryan Jarvi/Daily Globe

BILL STEIGER, at right, of Steiger’s Ace Hardware and Home Center in Bessemer, prepares a customer’s order of composite decking to be picked up outside the store on Tuesday. A composite deck costs more than a wooden deck, but is low maintenance and can have a longer lifespan.

Must-have technology making bathrooms healthier, safer, more enjoyable

(BPT) — Think home technology begins with your wireless, programmable thermostat and ends with the high-definition, 3-D, web-enabled flat-screen TV with surround sound? Think again - whole home technology means using leading-edge devices to improve life in every room of the house, including the bathroom. From toilets that flush without being touched to waterproof TVs for the shower, the latest bathroom technology can make the room safer, cleaner, healthier and more enjoyable for everyone. Here is a handful of high-tech home improvements for one of the most-used rooms in any house:

Safer, healthier toilets

You don’t have to be a scientist to know the toilet is one of the most germfilled locations in any house - even if you’re meticulous about keeping it clean. Touching spreads those germs from surface to surface. Just as touchfree faucets have improved hygiene in the kitchen, a touchless flush toilet can help make the bathroom a healthier and more hygienic place. “The toilet trip lever is an obvious

area of hygienic concern,” says Brian Hedlund, marketing manager of Kohler toilets and bidets. “Touchless takes that concern out of the equation, using new technology to provide a touchless way to control the flush.” Kohler’s touchless sensor creates a precise electromagnetic field that accurately and reliably detects when users hold their hands above the toilet to trigger the flush. The company’s Cimarron toilet comes with touchless technology already installed, and virtually any single-flush toilet with a canister or flapper-type flush can be retrofitted to work with the Kohler Touchless Flush Kit. The sensor runs on four AA alkaline batteries, which power the sensor for six to 12 months, depending on the volume of use. Also from Kohler, the Nightlight Toilet Seat illuminates the seat with two gentle, blue LED lights, one to help you see the toilet area and the other to light the bowl once the lid is opened. The seat provides enough light to enhance nighttime safety and eliminates the need to turn on brighter, overhead lights that could disrupt your ability to go back to sleep. Available on Kohler’s Cachet Q3

and Reveal Q3 toilet seats, the nightlight operates on a timer and powered by replaceable batteries.

The extras

Americans do much more in bathrooms than simply “take care of business.” The bath is also a hub for personal health, where we weigh ourselves and care for our mental health with relaxation. Extras like towel warmers, TVs and high-tech scales add a touch of luxury to the bathroom.Towel warmers have been around for centuries; wealthy

19th century and early 20th century homes were often outfitted with warmers that used a home’s steam heat system. Today, towel warmers feature several improvements such as high-tech warming bars, detailed temperature controls with multiple settings, timers and energy-efficient features. Most people weigh themselves in the bathroom, and technology has also touched the traditional bathroom scale. It’s easy to find visually appealing scales that serve multiple functions besides simply displaying your weight. From

scales that also measure body mass index (BMI) to wireless-enabled models that allow you to track your weight loss, BMI and other health indicators with a smartphone app, bathroom scales are more user-friendly than ever. Finally, technology has made it possible to shave, shower or relax in the tub while never missing your favorite TV show. You can opt for a waterproof television that you can watch while showering, or choose a medicine cabinet that features an LCD TV screen in a mirrored door.

Keep them home, happy and studying: Creating a kid-friendly space well as incorporating fun into the design. Here are some tips to get you started: • Consider creating a theme. Kids of all ages love themes. To decide which one might be right for your project, consider things your child has shown an enduring interest in. For example, she may be into princesses right now and hate the theme next year. On the other hand, if she’s always loved the color pink and has a passion for animals, those elements could be worked into a theme that she’ll appreciate for years to come. • Choose flooring that fulfills multiple needs. Carpeting absorbs sound (for when kids

(BPT) — Would a great study space ease your child’s transition from summer to school? Perhaps an awesome lounge area could convince your teens - and all their friends - that your house is the best hangout spot ever. Whatever your objectives, a few design and decorating tricks can help you create a kid-friendly space in your home. The basics of good design that make grown-up spaces appealing also work for children’s spaces. When designing a kid-friendly room, however, it’s important to keep in mind not only the purpose of the room (study, fun, sleep, etc.) but the age of the occupant, his or her interests as

What’s more, it’s available in virtually every hue and pattern imaginable, ensuring you’ll find something that appeals to both your design sense and your child’s tastes. Stain-resistant formulas and durable fibers ensure modern carpeting can stand up to the rigors of use in a child’s room. And, according to the Carpet & Rug Institute, properly cleaned carpet can maintain indoor air quality, making it a viable choice for families impacted by asthma

and allergies. To learn more about carpet, visit www.carpetrug.org. • A child’s space needs layers of lighting, just as adult spaces do. As you’re choosing lighting, keep in mind how your child will use the room. If he will be doing homework, task lighting and desk lights will illuminate study areas. Will the room be a movie room or a “hangout” for older teens? Recessed and dimmable lighting may be appropriate. Don’t forget to include natural light in your illumination plans. Avoid heavy drapery. Instead, opt for bright colors and lightweight materials for window treatments so windows

admit ample light. If you have a larger budget, consider adding a skylight to provide light while preserving privacy. • Organization is key in a child’s room, and ample storage facilitates good organization. Depending on the size of the room and how it will be used, shelving, portable cubes, book cases and other furnishings can provide plenty of storage space. For desks, look for desktop organizers that will keep important papers and supplies tidy and close at hand. By helping kids stay organized now, you’ll be laying the foundation for a lifetime of good organizational skills.

• Remember the fun factor. Whatever the purpose of a child’s room, fun should be a universal ingredient. You can infuse fun in a room in many ways, from creating a video game center for lounge rooms to choosing colorful, texturally appealing carpeting for a bedroom. A touch of whimsy, such as a swing hung from the ceiling or a wall mural of your child’s favorite cartoon character, can produce smiles every time kids see them. With some creativity and the right decorating materials, it’s possible to create a space that will make children comfortable, happy and ready to tackle the new school year.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT Consider windows, doors when reducing heat loss

THE DAILY GLOBE • YOURDAILYGLOBE.COM

By CORTNEY OFSTAD

cofstad@yourdailyglobe.com

IRONWOOD — With warm temperatures still lingering from summer, many residents like to open their windows and doors to let fresh air into their homes. What some residents don’t realize is once the temperature drops, heat is lost through windows and doors, if not properly installed. “Many people don’t realize how much energy is lost through their windows,” Paul Forslund, owner of Forslund Building Supply in Ironwood, said. “Especially around here. Many homes were built in the 1920s, when they didn’t have insulated glass or weather-stripping for windows.” New technology has made it easier to replace windows, according to Forslund. “They have really neat products,” he said. “Before, if the window was a different size, you were stuck. But now, they can retrofit anything.” When alleviating energy loss from doors, people can replace

weather stripping. With steel doors, people can install compression or magnetic stripping to keep in heat. Windows, however, can be a bit more complex. Forslund employee Dave Pawlak said people can check if their windows are properly insulated in a variety ways, with some simple tests and more complex ones. “The easiest one is to check for single glazing,” Pawlak said. “When you look at the window, you can either see if there is one or two layers of glass. After that, it’s harder to tell, unless you have the history of the windows, or a receipt.” Other steps to check for insulation or heat loss include geothermal testing, but it can be expensive. “A lot of it is hard to see or understand if you don’t know how the window is constructed,” Pawlak said. Inside windows, there are air chambers that act as insulators. The more chambers, the stronger the window, but the challenge is not being able to see

SEPTEMBER 2014

l

9

the chambers from the outside of the window. “As with any product, there is always good, better and best,” Pawlak said. “If I could show people the good from the best when it comes to air chambers, people might reconsider what they are buying, but it’s on the inside of the window.” If heat loss is taking place, Pawlak recommends checking around the windows to look at the weather stripping. If it is vinyl, a clear silicon spray can be used to help the weather stripping function better. Caulking around the window on the outside of the house should also be checked, according to Pawlak. A more challenging trick is to remove the casing from the frame of the window to check the insulation in the gap of the frame. When it comes to installing a new window, Pawlak said it depends on finances, but recommends the high-energy savings products. “They will perform much better,” he said.

Change-of-season checklist for lowering home energy costs (BPT) — The change of season creates a need for many adjustments around your home, from switching over wardrobes to warmer clothes, to completing necessary yard work and home repairs. You can also make adjustments to ensure you get the most out of your heating and cooling dollars as temperatures change. When you consider that space heating is the largest energy expense in the average U.S. home - accounting for 45 percent of energy bills, according to energy.gov — it makes sense to take steps to improve heating efficiency. Tackle this change-of-season checklist to help lower home energy costs now, before the long, cold winter sets in.

Program your thermostat

An easy first step is to turn down the temperature on your thermostat, particularly while you’re away from home. You can save roughly 10 percent a year on your heating and cooling bills by turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours, according to energy.gov. And, since fall temperatures can fluctuate quickly, from warm and balmy during one part of the day to cold and blustery during another, consider a programmable thermostat that you can adjust remotely as weather conditions change. For example, the Trane XL824 Smart Control Wi-Fi thermostat lets you program seven days of temperatures, with up to six schedules per day, as well as monitor temperatures and make adjustments remotely from a smartphone, tablet or computer. Compatible with Nexia Home Intelligence, the control enables you to receive temperature alerts via text and email. You can even view systemgenerated charts to determine

how much energy you’re using, so you can immediately make adjustments to save money.

Change your furnace filter

When your HVAC system circulates and filters the air in your home, dust and dirt particles build up on the filter. Excessive accumulation can block the airflow, forcing the system to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. And the harder the system works, the more energy it uses. Your system will have to work less, use less energy and last longer if you clean or replace your filter monthly, or at least every three months.

Take steps to keep cold air out

Small cracks and holes throughout your home can be a source of heat loss. To help keep cold air out and warm air in, add weather-stripping around windows and doors. Consider adding insulation to your attic or crawl space. Even closing your drapes

at night can help keep heat inside.

Protect HVAC equipment

Take some time to care for your outdoor HVAC unit, too. Clean off any fallen and decaying leaves from the fan grill so they won’t affect its operating efficiency.

Schedule HVAC servicing

Now is an ideal time to schedule an annual servicing checkup for your heating and cooling system. A qualified dealer can inspect your system and recommend any adjustments to ensure it is working properly and make any necessary repairs. To find an expert Trane Comfort Specialist near you, visit trane.com. These steps will better prepare your home for the season change, and also keep your family more comfortable, no matter what the weather brings. So check off all the items on your list and watch those lower energy bills come in.

Don’t forget . . . Your annual insurance check up. Family changes, finished basements, new cars ... call us to make sure you have the right coverage for your family. ur family.

Spray foam insulation cuts noise, boosts energy savings (BPT) — Whether it’s the neighbor’s lawnmower, low-flying aircraft, heavy traffic or loud music, noise pollution can hinder you from truly enjoying your home. Nowadays, a quiet place to relax and chill out can be increasingly difficult to find. Yet, a smart investment in the right materials can let you achieve both solace and silence in your home. Noise pollution can noticeably contribute to issues such as cognitive impairment, language development problems, learning disabilities, mood disorders as well as social and behavioral issues, according to online medical resource, MedScape, While these conditions are more likely to occur in children, there is a chance that older residents can suffer due to noise pollution. Eliminating noise pollution can have a significant impact on motivation, education and overall mood. The wrong kinds of noise pollution upgrades can often mean homeowners spend a lot more

than necessary and get a lot less in return. Building experts note homeowners are more likely to invest in soundproofing materials for their theatre or media rooms rather than tackle the issue of noise pollution holistically. Investing in heavy soundproofing drapes and doubleglazed windows are a good start to minimizing external, airborne noises. But what about flanking noises? That is, those noises rumbling from piping and the water system within your home. One versatile option that addresses both airborne and flanking noise pollution is spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation, like that available from Icynene, is ideal for targeting noise pollution while providing a range of other benefits. Conforming to any space when applied, spray foam insulation forms a thick, spongelike barrier that blocks the chaos of the outside world and dampens the flanking noises

from your home’s pipes improving the quality of life and health of you and your family. Installed by professionals, high performance spray foam insulation goes beyond just noise dampening. It fills every gap within the home’s walls and ceiling to stop air escaping as well as reduces the strain on your heating and cooling equipment. Spray foam insulation both insulates and air seals the entire building envelope letting homeowners cut their monthly heating and cooling bills by as much as 50 percent in some cases. As a long-term solution, spray foam insulation helps maintain a comfortable temperature year-round while helping to control noise pollution. The buzzing of a lawnmower and the late night house party can be a thing of the past thanks to a well-insulated home. More information on how spray foam insulation can help you effectively minimize noise pollution is available at icynene.com.

Popular home decor style: a blend of old and new (BPT) — It can be hard to keep up with the latest changes in decorating styles for the home. But the latest trend might actually make it easy for you to have a stylish house, especially if you’ve kept some family treasures around. Mixing traditional and contemporary decor within a home can give your spaces a warm, yet up-to-date, feel. Keeping those traditional accents, furniture pieces or even wallpaper in your home and blending them with contemporary elements that have clean lines or bright colors can create a relaxed and attention-grabbing look. You can incorporate this style in any room of the home, and it allows you to display that mirror your

grandma had in her bathroom, or to bring new life and energy to the aged marble countertops in your kitchen. Try these tips to help get the most out the old, while bringing a new look to your home: • Accent with white - One great way to give a room a contemporary balance is to accent with white. The trim, molding, doors and even decorative linens you use can bring new energy to a furniture item or heirloom piece you’ve had in your family for years. Blending the soft wood tones of older furniture or dark wood floors with cool and fresh white accents will make the room vibrant. If it’s your kitchen that’s sporting the contemporary white color, add Danze faucets in

stainless steel finishes that showcase a more traditional décor to balance the overall feel. • Choose your finishes with intention - The finish you choose for your fixtures and faucets will have a significant impact on the look and feel of the room. For example, a white sink or toilet fits well when adding contemporary elements versus biscuit, which will bring a more subdued, Selecting traditional flavor. faucets with a bronze finish could add a noticeable and beautiful deviation to an otherwise white bathroom decor. The Eastham Collection by Danze has a very architectural look that works well in either traditional or contemporary environments. But changing its finish can alter the impact it brings the room. • Add little touches - An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvious, but as visitors look around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles. • Incorporate a couple focal pieces - If the shell of your room has a contemporary look, adding a few traditional elements and conversation pieces into the room can create a stunning look. An antique lamp, an old trunk that becomes a side table or a church pew in an entryway can all be attention-getting additions. On the flipside, if your home features traditional wooden floors that have aged beautifully, let the floor take center stage with simple, modern decorations. Mixing old and new is a decorating trend in today’s home decor, and there are benefits galore to exploring its flavor. You’ll have a beautiful home today, with flexibility to alter it in the years to come. If, in five years, you decide going contemporary is the path for you, simply switch out that bronze faucet with chrome or replace the antique accent pieces in the living room. Regardless of the way you mix traditional and contemporary elements, you can be assured that it won’t overwhelm your guests. Instead, they’ll enjoy experiencing your creativity and the breath of fresh air you brought to your home.

THE DAILY GLOBE • YOURDAILYGLOBE.COM UW-Extension to host master gardener class HURLEY — The University of Wisconsin-Extension is in the process of recruiting individuals interested in participating in an upcoming master gardener class this fall. The course is designed to allow individuals to become a volunteer in horticulture and will teach the principles of gardening techniques based on research. The course will allow individuals to volunteer with the Wisconsin and Michigan Extension staff by helping people in their communities better understand horticulture and their environments. According to a news release, there are many volunteer projects in local communities that need master gardener expertise. Both residents of Iron and Gogebic counties are encouraged to apply for the program. Those interested are asked to contact 715-561-2695 to be put on a list and contacted with details of the program.

Native plants may increase wildlife value The Iron County Land and Water Conservation Department has strived to provide area residents with native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers at affordable prices for 22 years. Native plants are accustomed to the area’s growing season and winters, Heather Palmquist, county conservationist with the LWCD, said in a press release. “They have evolved to become more drought tolerant and used to poor soil conditions, as well as resistant to native insects and diseases,” she said. “Once established, native plant gardens become less maintenance than cultivated plant beds, which require constant maintenance and upkeep.” Palmquist said by using native plants in landscaping, people can also increase the wildlife value of their property. The LWCD also offers an active invasive species program. “Through this program volunteers can be trained how to monitor for invasive species both terrestrial and aquatics,” Palmquist said. LWCD staff also provides invasive species management assistance for landowners. To find out more about native plants, or for those seeking advice on handling invasive plants, contact Palmquist by calling 715-5612234, or emailing lakes@ironcountywi.org. —Ryan Jarvi

Expert to discuss use of native plants in landscapes By RYAN JARVI

rjarvi@yourdailyglobe.com

IRONWOOD — Local plantlovers will have the opportunity to learn more about the area’s native plants and how to use them in gardens and landscapes through a presentation and hands-on demonstration at Gogebic Community College on Sept. 27. During the event Becky Brown, a native plant specialist, of Washburn, Wis., will host a slideshow presentation on northern native plants and plant communities, demonstrate plant propagation techniques and answer questions from the Becky audience. Brown Brown will also bring native plant seeds that participants may take home for their gardens. “Besides being attractive, native plants are hardy plants that reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and herbicides, protect the soil, improve water quality and provide habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife,” Brown said. “For me, there’s another powerful, but less quantifiable benefit to ‘going native.’ It relates to a sense of place — native plants help connect us with the place where we live.” Lynn Adams, a local master gardener, said native, or indigenous, plants are ones that have evolved over thousands of years in a particular region. “They have adapted to the geography, the available water and climate of that region,” Adams said. “Native plants occur in communities; that is, they have evolved together with other plants. As a result, a community of native plants provides habitat for a variety of birds, butterflies and other wildlife by providing diverse habitats and food sources.” Native plants were discovered by botanists before the early settlers arrived, Adams said, noting some early botanists who collected plant specimens during the 1800s in all regions of Michigan, from Detroit to the Keweenaw Peninsula. “The early botanists’ collection of plants constitutes the control group,” Adams said. “After that, the plants are classified exotic or alien.” The exotic species typically have origins of Europe and Asia, Adams said. “Most weeds were brought over by the early immigrants,” she said. “They were leaving their homeland and felt they could not live without their

Brown’s love of native plants began as a graduate student at the University of Florida. She later served as a faculty member in Environmental Studies and Forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1983 to 1996, until she and her family moved to northern Wisconsin. After teaching a restoration ecology course and Earth Partnership teacher training workshops at Northland College, in Ashland, she moved in 2001 to a rural farm in Washburn, where she created a business, Wildflower Woods, selling native plants. The business started as a lean-to greenhouse on her property, which has since grown to

include a 1,500-square-foot greenhouse, two rain gardens, a woodland garden and an upland butterfly garden. During the past few years, she has spent more and more time growing native plants as fundraisers for local groups. With the help of many enthusiastic greenhouse volunteers, they have grown plants for the Bayfield Regional Conservancy, for the Cable Natural History Museum, and for a Monarch butterfly garden and a rain garden at the Washburn High School. She and a Washburn High School employee are planning a Monarch milkweed market for 2015, to encourage people to grow native plants that support Monarch butterflies. During the event, Jim Finley, of the Gogebic Conservation District, will also discuss eradication efforts of invasive plants in Gogebic County. The program is sponsored by the Range Master Gardener Volunteer Association, the 46th Parallel Planters Garden Club, UWExtension-Iron County, Iron County Land and Water Conservation and the Gogebic Conservation District. The two-hour seminar will be

held at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 27 in Room B21 of the Jacob Solin Center at GCC. Signs will direct attendees from the back parking lot. Instead of charging a fee, organizers are asking participants to donate two items, either

non-perishable foods or products, to the Iron County Food Pantry in Montreal, Wis. Seating is limited and interested parties are directed to call Adams at 906-932-3509 to reserve a seat. Refreshments will be served.

Deck support: It’s what’s beneath the surface that counts

(BPT) — The substructure of your deck is the heart of its durability and the foundation for its aesthetics. Until recently, wood was the go-to material for builders and contractors but many professionals are now switching to steel for its superior structural integrity and design flexibility. Steel won’t rot, crack or warp and its inherent strength allows for longer spans between beams and posts making it possible for architects and homeowners to integrate curves and other design elements into their decks, while achieving more useable space underneath. “The substructure of a deck is something that homeowners rarely consider but one that can

make all the difference in the life and performance of a deck,” says Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-performance wood-alternative decking and railing. “As a manufacturer of deck boards designed to last for at least 25 years, we recommend using steel framing to ensure that the substructure lasts as long as the deck surface. Dimensionally stable steel is the only material that can deliver on the refined look and feel of what you’d expect from a high-performance deck board.” Offering superior durability and aesthetics, steel outperforms wood on a variety of levels:

Performance — Traditional wood framing can split, warp and shift over time, leading to an uneven surface in the deck boards above. Steel deck frames are precision engineered to ensure a refined, flat surface for the life of the deck. They also are significantly more resilient to weather, moisture, time and pest deterioration. Design flexibility — Have you ever tried to bend wood? Steel framing components have the ability to be bent and shaped allowing for curves and angled corners to create more intricate and dramatic deck designs. Additionally, they are more lightweight than wood and can span up to six feet (versus four

feet for wood), resulting in the need for fewer posts and greater flexibility in post placement. This creates less obstructed views and more open space below the deck for storage or even additional outdoor living area. Safety — A substructure is the platform that will support your deck — not to mention your friends, family and loved ones for decades of outdoor living activities. In addition to offering superior strength and longevity, steel is non-combustible, termite-proof and free of pressuretreating chemicals. For maximum safety, Trex offers the only code-listed deck substructure rated for exterior use in its Ele-

Give your home a colorful makeover in just a weekend (BPT) — Are you limited on time but want to upgrade your home? There are easy home improvements you can achieve in a weekend. Painting is one of the most popular ways to transform the look of your home. Accent walls (23 percent), interior or exterior doors (22 percent) and home accessories, such as chairs or mirrors (22 percent) rank as the top three weekend painting projects according to a survey conducted by SherwinWilliams. “Painting is one of the easiest ways to provide your home with a fresh appearance and to increase curb appeal,” says Kevin Anundson, president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). “With a quality paint and project know-how, any homeowner can transform their home’s look.” While more than half (59 percent) of homeowners start weekend painting projects because they want a color or design change, 28 percent are focused on home renovation. Here are tips to set your next weekend painting project up for success: Upgrade with color beyond walls. Consider painting furniture, a door, or a home accessory, such as a mirror, in a fresh and lively hue to quickly refresh your

vations Steel Deck Framing System. Eco-friendly — In addition to lasting longer than wood, steel deck frames are made from recycled materials, can be recycled themselves and, unlike pressure-treated lumber, are chemical free. “With its ability to prolong

Corn Stalks

the life of a deck and improve its overall appearance, steel deck framing delivers performance and design benefits that wood simply can’t,” says Zambanini. “It’s a smart investment for any homeowner looking to maximize the life of their deck and keep it looking great for years to come.”

living space. Finishes matter. Flat finishes have a non-reflective appearance that helps hide surface blemishes and are ideal for an accent wall in your dining room or formal living room. Satin finishes, with a slight gloss, offer the benefits of a richer look and work best in high traffic areas such as a hallway, children’s room or family room.

Semi-gloss finishes offer a lustrous look, perfect for furniture. Gloss finishes are durable and great for windows, trim or any area you would like to highlight. A paint calculator is your friend. Measure the total height, and width (in feet) of the surface to be painted and remember that one gallon will cover approximately 400 square feet with one

coat of paint. Use the right tools. Most projects require primer, paint, stir sticks, paint rollers, roller covers (1 1/2-inch nap roller is best), small paintbrushes for corners, edges, and touch-ups, paint trays, painter tape, and drop cloths. Make sure you have all of your supplies before you begin your project.
