Memorial Day ATV R ally The 34th annual Memorial Day ATV/UTV Rally kicks off Thursday, May 23, and continues through Sunday, May 26. Highlighting Iron County’s more than 200 miles of trails, the annual event is known for the Largest ATV/UTV Parade in the North. A weekend full of activity, the poker run begins at noon Thursday. Participating businesses will offer specials all weekend long. Those who wish to participate in the poker run can pick up Page 6 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

their packet at the Hurley Chamber of Commerce beginning at noon Thursday. Each participant will automatically be entered into a drawing for a prize package. The parade line up site is located about 2 miles west of Hurley on Trail 77 where food and beverages are available at 3 p.m., Friday. The parade starts at 7 p.m. Don’t miss the infamous mud pit on Sunday. Sponsored annually by the

Hurley Fire Department, the pit challenges riders to make it through the mud with the fastest time in their category. Registration begins at noon, with racing at 1 p.m. There will be DJ music, food, beverages and raffles. Everyone is welcome to participate in the weekend of activities. Bessemer 4th of July The Bessemer Fourth of July celebration is billed as the Upper Peninsulas biggest and best celebration. One thing is certain, the residents and city of Bessemer hold nothing back when it comes to the Fourth of July. Bessemer starts the party this year Thursday, June 27, with the selling of 50/50 tickets, the selfie challenge and geocache dash which continue throughout the holiday. In the evening, the American Legion Post 27’s will serve up a pulled pulled pork picnic dinner. Later, the Tree of Honor is being lit in Pocket Park on Sophie Street. On Saturday morning, June 29, bright and early, the 31st annual Hometown walk-run kicks off the day’s Page 8 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

events. There will be kids games, a craft fair and music along Mary Street, and the mud run races at the pit on North Moore Street that afternoon. The evening will bring a pig roast at Bessemer VFW and a bean bag tournament at the Pit Stop & Grill. Sunday morning the Knights of Columbus are serving up pancakes alongside a silent auction by the Daughters of Isabella Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Sebastian Gym. On Monday’s event include a family fun with science at Bluff Valley Park in the morning and later there will be Bingo at the Bessemer VFW. Tuesday, July 2, brings a host of evening games including a chalk drawing contest, street bowling, water

balloon toss and Simon Says contest. On Wednesday, there will be more games on the street, including bean bag tournament, giant-sized beer pong and water ballon launch, all followed by a street dance. The 4th of July, on Thursday will bring even more fun for families, including games and races at Massie Field in the morning and the children’s parade that afternoon at 1:30. The evening parade kicks off at 7. Afterwards, Marty’s Goldenaires will put on a concert at Massie Field, setting the stage for the Thunder on the Mountain fireworks display. Wakefield 4th of July Wakefield has a full schedule of events for the 4th of July, and everyone is welcome. The 22nd annual Matt Ahonen Memorial softball tournament will take place from June 28-30 at Gabby Fields on Cemetery Road. Concessions will be available. On July 2, the annual hometown variety show will be held at 6 p.m. at the Wakefield-Marenisco K-12 School gym. On the same evening, a street dance is planned for 8 p.m. on the corner of Sunday Lake and Hancock streets. The Michigan State Police Post will host an open house on July 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Displays will include various emergency vehicles and units, including a K-9 demonstration. A town picnic will start at 1 p.m. that afternoon in Eddy Park next to Sunday Lake. Entertainment will include music and bingo. The Gogebic Range Band will perform at 7 p.m. Page 10 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

Also on July 3, the “Lightning on the Lake” fireworks display is set for 10 p.m. over Sunday Lake. On July 4, the 41st annual Sunday Lake Walk/Run will start at 8 a.m. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m. On the same day, the Wakefield Historical Museum will be open on the main street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also on July 4, the children’s parade will start at 1 p.m. at the Wakefield Fire Hall on the main street. The general parade also will start at 1 p.m. at Cormier’s Corner on Putnam Street. After both parades, children’s races will be held at Roger Randall Field, west of the school. In a departure from last year, the Glow Walk will take place after all other events instead of before them. On July 5, Glow Walk participants will start their trek around Sunday Lake at 10 p.m. There will be no Glow Kayak this year.

Festival Ironwood Ironwood’s salute to summer, called Festival Ironwood, returns July 17 through 20 with a wide variety of events centered in or around the big blue and white tent at Depot Park. Every year Ironwood hosts the festival, improvements to the downtown park have added to the number and quality of the events offered. There will be plenty of music, food and games for kids of all ages. The “World’s Largest Duck Pick” is always a hit with the kids. A full schedule for the four days will be announced. Craft show registration is available for download at the Ironwood Chamber’s website under “events.” The festival, which also features music under the big tent, is a call to “all people who have ever lived, visited or plan to visit Ironwood,” according to organizers. Gogebic County Fair The Gogebic County Fair will run Aug. 8-11 in 2019. Daily admission covers grandstand entertainment and carnival rides. A four-day pass is also available. When fair-goers enter the grounds, they receive wristbands that are good for entire day. The only money they spend at the fair is for food or beverages from the many vendors, the carnival games and any of the merchandise purchased. Harness racing will again be one of the highlights of the fair, scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Iron County Fair The Iron County Fair will run from Aug. 1-4 this year at the fairgrounds in Saxon. It will be the 92nd running of the country fair that offers activities ranging from carnival rides and a mud run to the popular pie auction on Sunday afternoon. People who havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attended the fair in recent years will be surprised to visit the updated buildings and improvements that have been made throughout the fairgrounds. The fair is part of the Iron County Page 16 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Summer Fun & Dining Guide

Heritage Festival, which packages many events under one umbrella in late July and August. It allows former residents to return home for a weekend of memories and catching up with their friends. Other popular fair features are an antique tractor show, an old-fashioned horse pulling contest, the Saturday livestock auction, plenty of 4-H horse shows and musical entertainment. At the youth livestock auction, Iron County 4-Hers display their market projects, including steers, hogs, lambs,

chickens and turkeys. Fair-goers are encouraged to bid on the homegrown animals. The auction runs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the pen near the cattle barns. A fair board comprised of dedicated volunteers meets on a monthly basis to set up entertainment for the fair and plan for the exhibits. To get to the fair from Ironwood or Hurley, take U.S. 2 west to Saxon, then turn left at either the County Trunk B intersection or the Wisconsin 122 intersection.

Porkies Music Festival

WELCOME TO MARENISCO!

The Friends of the Porkies will present their 15th Annual Porcupine Mountains Music Festival from Aug. 23-25 at the Winter Sports Complex within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Silver City. According to festival director Cheryl Sundberg, this 3-day event will feature three stages and 16 acts (international, national and regional) on the outdoor main stage. Beyond the main stage outside, the chalet stage inside will offer additional musical performances and a special Q & A workshop by the War and Treaty. In addition, the festival’s third stage in the all-acoustic busking barn offers sea-

soned performers and amateurs in an intimate setting and is regarded as a “calm oasis” on the grounds. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at the chalet throughout the festival. Iron Co unty He rit ag e Fe stiv al Iron County celebrates its heritage with a big bash — featuring over two weeks of events, including parties, golf outings, a marathon and a county fair, all under the theme of “You Want to Go Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” The Iron County Heritage Festival kicks off with a bang Friday, July 26. Not only is that the first day of the weekendlong Northwoods Art Tour throughout various locations in the Mercer area, but it is also the Hurley Quarterback Club’s golf tournament, the Iron County Historical Museum’s living history open house and the Highline Corporation’s open house. The next day is another big day for the festival, featuring the Hurley All-Class Reunion, the Hurley High School Quarterback Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, Hurley Education Foundation’s school tour and induction of distinguished alumni and the Iron County Heritage Festival Parade. The Iron County Farmers Market has a Farm Heritage Day and Antique Tractor Show planned for that day. The Pines Restaurant and Beer Garden is also hosting a Summer Mardi Gras party in Mercer on Saturday, July 27. St. Mary’s Catholic Church will hold its annual bazaar at noon Sunday, July 28. The event features food, beverages, kid’s games, bingo and more fun activities. The Iron County Fair runs from Aug. 1-4. On the south end of the county, the Mercer Library will hold a Friends of the Library book sale Friday, Aug. 2. Page 24 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

The popular Night Before Loon Day street dance is set for Aug. 6 and the 39th annual Mercer Loon Day and Craftshow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the next day. The 51st annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon on Saturday, Aug. 10. That Friday evening at the Hurley K-12 School will be registration and packet pick-up from 3 to 7 p.m. Also that evening, a torch lighting ceremony will be held in downtown Hurley at the Iron Horse Trailhead. Races start Saturday morning, with a new starting line on Silver Street. That Saturday is also the Mercer Lions’ Turtle River Duck Races at Rugger’s Landing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. After the race, people can head on down to the Midway Bar on County F in Butternut for the Turtle Flambeau Flowage Pig and Corn Roast from 4 to 7 p.m. Other activities that day include the Northwoods Wildlife Turkey Shoot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northwoods Shooting Range in Mercer and the 40th Springstead Corn Roast from noon to 6 p.m. at the Springstead Town Hall. On Sunday, Aug. 11, the inaugural Paavo Pursuit will be held at Whitecap Mountain Resort, where competitors will race in 100-, 50- and 24-mile bike races. Me rce r : L o o n C ap ita l Mercer, also known as the Loon Capital of the Northwoods, is never short of entertainment for both tourists and residents. Lupine Junefest/Bird Festival During the 13th annual Lupine Junefest on June 8, bicyclists will ride paved roads past a bounty of blooming lupines throughout southern Iron County. Participants can choose routes of 10, 15, 28 or 50 miles, which also include lots of trees, rivers, lakes and wildlife. Afterward, a Carow Park concession stand will offer lunch and drinks while music and Grand Portage Lake complete the ambiance. Events will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check registration options at lupinejunefest.org. On the same day, the park also will feature the Mercer Bird Festival. This event will include nature displays, demonstrations, information booths, fun for kids, and more. Guided birding hikes are scheduled for 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. (reservations required). Ontonagon County Fourth of July The Independence Day celebrations in Ontonagon County will be held in White Pine, Bruce Crossing and Greenland on three differents dates with parades, food, music and fireworks. White Pine White Pine will their annual Independence Day celebration on Saturday, June 29. The White Pine celebration is traditionally the time when alumni return to the community. It features a parade which starts at the White Pine totem pole area and ends at the American Legion. The parade includes floats and the children of the area. At the American Legion Post 462

there will be games, food and prizes for the best floats. At dusk the action swings to the Mineral River Plaza with what organizers call “a great fireworks display.” Bruce Crossing The largest Independence Day celebration in the county will be held July 4, in Bruce Crossing. The 1 p.m. parade features music, original floats and the children of the area. Much of the activity will be centered at the Stannard Township Park pavilion. The activity features a salute to the men and women who have served the county. Organizers emphasize the day returns to the old Fourth of July tradition

of visiting with neighbors, friendly competition and plenty of music and food. The busy day is topped off with a large fireworks display. Greenland Greenland’s Fourth of July Celebration will be held this year on Saturday, July 6. The celebration includes a parade, athletic tournaments, street dance and many games for the kids. Fourth of July officials noted the 2019 celebration could be the last unless more members of the community step up to help the small committee. County Fair The Ontonagon County Fair will be held at Adventure Mountain in Greenland July 26-27-28. One of the favorite stops is the display of fine arts and crafts from county residents vying for blue ribbons or state awards. It would not be a county fair, however, without the exhibition of a variety of animals from rabbits to goats to cattle and pigs. It is an opportunity for many 4H young people to display and even sell the animals they have tended during the year. One of the feature events is the horse exhibitions. Riders

put their horses though the paces in competition. Music will also be on display this year, with one of the new home grown young bands, Sudden Genius. A princess pageant will be held, and carnival rides will return to this year’s fair. A yearly favorite at the Ontonagon County Fair is the antique engine display. Organizers note it is a great way for young people to see how farming as well as industry engines operated in the “old days.” Organizers note there will be plenty to eat so “bring your appetites.”

63rd annual Labor Day Festival New events are always on the calendar at the 63rd annual Ontonagon Labor Day Festival. New co-chairmen Margo Anderson and Tayna Weisinger included new events for last year’s celebration and it is expected that new events will be added this year. along with a dunk tank and street dance. The festival will be held Friday, Aug. 30, through Monday, Sept. 2. Dances, parades, large street sales, 5K and 10K race, bands and a kick off picnic return for the four-day event. Friday begins the celebration with a free picnic. The highlight of the celebra-

tion is the large Sunday, Sept. 1, parade with four bands, homemade floats and music. The parade begins at 2 p.m., after the morning 5K and 10K race. Saturday is Maxwell Street Day with sales along the street. The festival wraps up with a Kiddies Parade on Labor Day, Monday at 1 p.m.

Black River Harbor While the harbor at Black River Harbor is under re-construction this summer, there is still plenty to experience here, including picnic area, campground, beach along Lake Superior and a series of waterfalls and trails. There are 60 picnic tables and grills available, as is a remodeled enclosed pavilion. The campground has 40 camp sites. Twenty-three are reserved camping sites and 17 more “first come, first serve” sites. The waterfalls are along the Black River which flows through large pine, hemlock and hardwood trees. There are multiple platforms accessible by trail to view various elevation drops to Lake Superior. Much of this trail is part of the North Country Trail. The Black River earns its name from the tannic acids leaching out of local hemlock trees. The Black River Harbor is managed by the Ottawa National Forest and is the only harbor within the National Forest System. Located approximately 15 miles north of Bessemer at the mouth of the Black River. In 1992, the Black River area was officially dedicated as a National Scenic Byway because of its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The Scenic byway stretch begins on County Road 513 at the intersection with County Road 204 (Airport Road) and travels 11 miles north to the harbor. During 1848, William A. Burt, a land surveyor, completed a survey of what is now the Black River Recreation Area. The original survey shows a wagon road going south from the mouth of the Black River to Chippewa Hill, which is the location of the Copper Peak Ski Flying Hill. Little Girl’s Point The Little Girl’s Point Park, established as a recreational facility by Gogebic County in 1920, is on Lake Road, 18 miles north of Ironwood, along the shores of Lake Superior. There are 29 electric (30 amp power), and two non-electric campsites available for nightly or monthly reservations. Little Girl’s Point County Campground features breathtaking views of Lake Superior, as well as two pavilions with grills and picnic tables, walking trails and updated playground equipment. Within the park boundaries, the mouth of Oman’s Creek offers boating access. Camping, swimming, fishing, rock hounding, boating and sightseeing are all ways to enjoy the beauty and grandeur of Lake Superior and Little Girl’s Point County Park. On most days, the Porcupine Mountains are clearly visible to the east and the Apostle Islands are visible to the northwest. The Lodge at Little Girl’s Point, established in 1951 by the Gogebic County Cooperative Extension, is nearby. It has hosted many social events, including weddings, receptions, family reunions, class reunions and youth camps. The facility can sleep up to 40 overnight guests and provides a large kitchen and dining hall with a cut stone, wood-burning fireplace. There is space outdoors adequate for several tents or campers and provides a camp fire area and beach access. The Lodge offers guests a spectacular view of Lake Superior. The campground offers seasonal sites which can be occupied from midMay to the end of September. There are a number of sites also available for nightly of monthly camping reservations. Lake Gogebic County Park offers a pavilion with picnic tables, playground equipment, on-site boating access and provides camper sewage waste service for a minimal fee. The dock at the park provides a convenient way for campers to fish. There are several restaurants along the lake shore for visitors to enjoy, as well. Ontonagon Township Park The Ontonagon Township Park offers beautiful rest and relaxation along Lake Superior. The 76-acre park was purchased in 1923, with additions purchased in 1929 and 1935 from the Longyear family in Marquette for $1 an acre. The park is located on the shore of Lake Superior with walking distance to the business community by way of a paved walkway. There are 80 campsites, two rental buildings for larger gatherings, a shower house, flush toilets, a large playground and a disc golf area. Each campsite has a fire pit, picnic table, water and power. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets can be seen out the window of a trailer or while sitting at the individual campsites. The park is one of only a few which permit bonfires on the beach. Campers can roast hot dogs or marshmallows and sing around the campfire as a bonus. WILDERNESS STATE PARK Silver City 800-447-2757 The Union Bay campground offers 100 campsites near Lake Superior. There are restrooms and a playground, as well as a nearby boat launch. There are an additional 50 campsites at the Presque Isle campground near the mouth of the Presque Isle River. The park also offers a variety of cabins, yurts and campsites in the park. STANNARD TOWNSHIP PARK U.S. 45 Bruce Crossing Campground, restrooms, ballfield, pavilion, volleyball courts and horseshoe pits.

Sylvania Wilderness Area The Sylvania Wilderness and Recreational Area located 7 miles east of Watersmeet and is part of the Ottawa National Forest. The area boasts 18,327 acres of camping, fishing, hiking, and canoeing. There are 34 lakes within the area itself. Many of the lakes offer sandy beaches, while the oldgrowth forests contain remarkably large pines. The area is also home to many endangered plants and animals native to this region. The Clark Lake campground offers 48 drive-up campsites with a nearby picnic area, showers, drinkable water, restrooms, and a boat launch. For more adventurous campers, the wilderness contains a multitude of campsites woven throughout the various hiking trails. The designated areas have a fire ring and a wilderness latrine provided at each site. A permit is required for all campers within the Sylvania Wilderness Area. Porcupine Mountains State Park Summer is a busy time for visitors in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Yearly from 250,000 to 300,000 visitors camp, hike, sightsee, fish, ski and enjoy the wonder of one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the midwest. The many waterfalls in the park continue to draw people to the 60,000 acre park which covers 92 square miles. The Visitors Center is the place where visitors can find out more about ongoing programs. A trip up to Lake of the Clouds affords a view for many miles. Reservations are suggested for those looking to camp.

Turtle Flambeau Flowage The Turtle Flambeau Flowage Scenic Wilderness Waters Area is a nature lover’s vacation destination. There are 195 islands and six boat landings on nearly 19,000 acres of water, a result of 1926 dam construction to create a reservoir in southern Iron County. There are 66, non-reservable remote campsites that are accessible only by water, but there is also 35,500 acres of land to be explored. There are also six reservable campsites. The flowage offers five distinct trails stretching nearly 250 miles that are perfect for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hunting. The five trails are Big Island Trail, Deadhorse Trail, Little Turtle Trail, Wilson Hills Trail and Hidden Rivers Nature Trail, which is wheelchair friendly. The Flambeau Flowage is known for its abundant Page 38 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

wildlife, including eagles, deer, bear, timber wolves and moose. The flowage has a number of underwater stumps and driftwood that make for an excellent fishing environment. Fishermen beware — muskies more than 50 pounds have been caught along the flowage. But the area is best known for its abundant walleye population. There are also smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappie, perch and bluegill. Find all of these attractions and much more just a short distance from downtown Mercer, on County FF off U.S. 51. North Countr y Trail The longest trail in the National Trail System, the North Country National Scenic Trail stretches more than 4,600 miles from Vermont to North Dakota — including running through parts of Gogebic and Ontonagon counties and Iron County, Wis. Marked by blue blazes along the route, the North Country Trail offers an excellent route to explore many of the area’s forests and waterfalls. The roughly 40 miles of trail in Iron County is a mix of onroad and off-road hiking between Copper Falls State Park in Ashland County and the Michigan border near Superior Falls.

The North Country Trail’s website describes the section as running through a “land of waterfalls and rock outcrops,” and being moderately difficult. “Passing through portions of the ancient, but worn down Penokee Mountain Range, you’ll encounter many rock outcrops,” the site’s description continues. “These outcrops offer expansive vistas where the trail passes over the top or skirts their bases and give trailside interest in the form of a wall of lichens, mosses, and small ferns.” Once in Michigan, the trail follows Lake and Airport Roads to Black River Road before going off-road near Copper Peak. The trail runs north to Black River Harbor before crossing the river and heading east toward M-64 and the Porcupine Mountains. “The area consists of mostly mature forest with diverse flora and fauna, a mixed terrain of old logging roads, narrow paths and elevation changes. Areas of particular beauty are Black River Harbor and the Presque Isle River area of Porcupine Mountain State Park,” according to the website. “The trail offers four seasons of recreational opportunity, each with its own special flavor.” The section of the trail in the Western Upper Peninsula is rated as difficult, although this could vary depending on where in the 192 miles between the state border and the Marquette/Baraga county line people are hiking. Copper Peak

Copper Peak’s Adventure Ride offers a view for miles from Ironwood Township. It involves an 800-foot chairlift ride to the top of the hill, and an 18-story elevator ride to the main observation deck near the top of the world’s largest ski flying platform. From the main observation deck, or from the very top of the ski structure, one can overlook more than 2,500 square miles of the Lake Superior basin and see a flyer’s perspective of waiting to accelerate to 65 mph down the 469-foot in-run, and with a leap of faith, soar more than 600 feet down to the bottom of the hill. On a clear day it is possible to see 85 miles across Lake Superior to northern Minnesota near the Canadian border. Observe historic landmarks such as the Apostle Islands (40 Page 42 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

miles to the northwest), Isle Royale (80 miles north-northeast), the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (25 miles northeast), and the GogebicPenokee Range and downhill ski areas (to the south). Fall colors bring even more people to Copper Peak. Copper Peak is a registered Michigan historic site and a member of the Western Upper Peninsula Heritage Trail Network. The network contains some 70 of the most scenic and historic sites in the western counties of the Upper Peninsula. Copper Peak is located 10 miles north of Bessemer on Black River Road (County Road 513). The adventure ride is open daily from late May to mid-October. ‘Where the waters meet’ Watersmeet lives up to its name by offering 302 lakes and 241 miles of trout streams. According to the Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce, the Cisco Chain alone has 15 lakes. The Lac Vieux Desert Lake, shared by Wisconsin, also has 4,200 acres of boundary waters and welcomes both Michigan and Wisconsin fishing licenses. The origin of Watersmeet’s name, according to the chamber, comes from three rivers that flow from the region in different directions — the Ontonagon River flows north into Lake Superior, the Wisconsin River flows south into the Mississippi River, and the Paint River flows east into Lake Michigan; hence, this is the place “where the waters meet.” All that water makes for a fisherman’s paradise, with species including walleye, northern pike, cisco, trout, small- and large-mouth bass, panfish (such as bluegill, perch and crappie), silver musky, and state- and worldrecord tiger musky. May 15 is the fishing opener for game fish. Bass season opens May 25. Musky season opens June 1. The region’s trees rival water in abundance. The Ottawa National Forest features more than 1 million acres and 10 national forest campgrounds. As part of that forest, the Sylvania Wilderness Area is run by the U.S. Forest Service. The Sylvania area boasts about 20,000 acres of “virgin forest,” and portages connect many of its lakes. Its recreation area has a 48-unit campground, a pavilion with showers, boat landings, and a beach and picnic area. Waterfalls The many rivers in the area form an abundance of waterfalls that can be appreciated by hikers. Some of the hikes travel just a short

distance from paved parking lots while other treks are a little deeper into the woods. Officials from area chambers of com-

Tyler Forks River, Wren Falls are 30 feet high. Take U.S. 2 15 miles west of Hurley and turn left on Wisconsin 169. Travel about 5.7 miles and turn left on Vogues Road. Stay on there for about 3.5 miles. At the hairpin turn, take the center road across. One mile down the road, stay to the right at the fork and continue a few hundred yards. When leaving, take a right onto Sullivan Fire Lane. Upson Falls: From Upson travel west on Wisconsin 77, then take a right on Park Road. The signs will guide you to the Upson Town Park where you can view the 18-foot high falls.

Michigan Black River National Forest Scenic Byway: Sightseers can spend an entire afternoon stopping at the five major falls along the Black River. The falls all have a short walking distance from each of their parking areas. The first is Great Conglomerate Falls, with a 3/4-mile walk, the farthest walk of any of the falls. To get there, head north for about 3 miles along Powderhorn Road off of U.S. 2 near Bessemer. Take a left onto Black River Road and follow for it about 10 miles. There will be signs marking the waterfalls. The next falls, Potawatomi Falls, are 30 feet high. The falls are a short walk away from Gorge Falls, which have a 34-foot drop. Sandstone Falls are 15 feet high and Rainbow Falls are 30 feet. Agate Falls: These 40-feet high falls are part of the middle branch of the Ontonagon River. They are located about 6.5 miles east of Bruce Crossing along M-28. Bond Falls: The 40-foot falls are fed by the middle branch of the Ontonagon River and Bond Flowage, located east of U.S. 45 from Paulding on Bond Falls Road. Bond Falls are more than 100 feet wide and are a Michigan State Scenic Site. Gabbro Falls: The 40-feet high falls are located on the Black River near Ramsay. To get there, head north on Blackjack Road from U.S. 2 for about 1.6 miles, then take a left over a wooden covered bridge. Stay left for about 1/2 mile and find the falls to the east. O Kun-de-Kun Falls: Located on the Baltimore River, these 25-feet high falls are one of the wilder falls that require a bit of hiking to visit. One of the only few plunge falls in Michigan, daredevils can actually go behind the falls but must be careful. The trailhead to the falls is about 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing on U.S. 45. Presque Isle Falls: There are several falls located within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park along the Presque Isle River. From Wakefield, travel east along M-28 to County Road 519. Follow that road north until you pass South Boundary Road, heading into the park and to a trail to visit the falls.

Wisconsin Kimball Falls: These gently cascading rapids on the west branch of the Montreal River skirt the Kimball Town Park. The park Page 44 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

Border Falls

offers picnic and play areas, as well as a nature trail. Take U.S. 2 west of Hurley, turn south on Park Road and west on Town Park Drive. Potato River Falls: The falls are a monstrous 90 feet high, located on the Potato River in Gurney. Take U.S. 2 to Wisconsin 169 and turn south. Continue for 2.8 miles through Gurney, then turn right on Potato River Falls Road. Travel 1.5 miles until you can’t drive any farther. Rustic picnic campsites are available. Spring Camp Falls: The 20-feet high falls are along the west branch of the Montreal River, south of Hurley, and are also known as the Montreal Falls. From Hurley, take U.S. 51 south for 4.7 miles and turn right onto County C. Follow that for 1.5 miles and continue left on Island Lake Road for about 2.7 miles. Take a right on Falls Road and drive for 1.3 miles. The destination will be on the right. Wren Falls: (Not recommended without a 4x4 and good clearance) Located along the

Saxon Falls: These 110-foot falls are located on the Montreal River. Drive west on U.S. 2 from Ironwood for about 10.5 miles, entering Wisconsin. Make a right turn onto County B and follow 2.4 miles, then continue on Saxon Falls Road for another 1/2 mile. Superior Falls: At 90 feet high, the falls are fed by the Montreal River near Lake Superior. To get there take Wisconsin 122, turning north off of U.S. 2, near Saxon. Stay on 122 for 4.2 miles, crossing the WisconsinMichigan border. Continue another 1/2 mile, then turn left on a gravel road marked by Xcel Energy. Interstate Falls: Located on the east branch of the Montreal River in the Hurley area is Interstate Falls. One of Iron County’s newest parks, the town of Kimball and the Northwoods Land Trust joined forces last year to purchase land next to the falls to ensure the public would be able to continue accessing the site. The purchased property — which consists of approximately 38.7 acres near the 17.5foot waterfall on the west side of the Montreal River and includes 2,500 feet of frontage on the river along with a roughly quarter-mile corridor on Kaminski Creek — was named the Siebert Scenic Conservation Area to honor its former owners. The falls can be accessed by taking U.S. 2 for .6 miles from Hurley to Center Drive, where there is a sign marking the property. Turning north at the sign, follow road straight east — do not take any side roads. Continue for .3 miles and park at large parking area on the left. Follow the trail to the north to visit Interstate Falls. More information on Interstate Falls can be found at interstatefalls.org.

Min er s Mu ra l Downtown Ironwood offers the public a look back into history with two miners murals honoring the miners who worked on the Gogebic Iron Range in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. The newest mural was complete in 2019 and is on the 100 block of South Lowell Street. The other, completed in 2012, is located on the 100 block of East McLeod Avenue. The murals were supported by those listed on plaques along the bottom of the murals, many of them family members

honoring their relatives who worked in the mines. Downtown also offers three parks — Pocket, Art and Depot — as well as Hiawatha Park and its 52-foot statue of the Native American chief a few blocks to the south on Burma Road. The Ironwood Area Historical Society and Museum share space in the former Chicago-North Western Rail Road depot with the Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce. G i le Flo wage The expansive Gile (Wis.) Flowage offers a variety of fishing opportunities, but walleyes and monster muskies are the prime species. There are four boat landings on the Montreal River Flowage that is controlled by Xcel Energy. Landings in Gile and on County C offer ample space for parking boat trailers and also shore fishing opportunities. The 3,138-acre flowage has a maximum depth of 25 about feet, but that’s deep enough to hold a large population Page 46 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

of walleyes. Walleyes inhabit shallow water after spawning in the spring and tend to move deeper during the summer months. They can readily be caught from shore in spring on bait or with artificial lures, like Rapalas. There’s also an abundant population of smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskies and panfish, like crappies. Winter fishing has become as popular on the flowage as summer angling, and tents spring up across the ice during cold weather months.

Museums There are several museums in the area which preserve local history and culture in the form of photographs, equipment and other artifacts. In Ironwood, the Old Depot Park Museum is located downtown between Lowell and Suffolk streets. The building was constructed in 1892 and served as the Chicago North Western Railroad depot. The museum features iron mining displays, railroad memorabilia, items from Ironwoodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s past and the Ironwood Historical Society research center. For more information, call 906-932-0287. The Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce also has its office in the old depot. The Ironwood Memorial Building houses municipal offices, a 1,500-seat auditorium and many historical displays, including a statue of a World War I doughboy and numerous bronze tablets listing locals who served during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and the World War I. The building is located at the corner of McLeod Avenue and Marquette Street. For more information, call 906-932-5050. Located at 202 Iron St. in Hurley, the Iron County Historical Society Museum opened in 1971 in the former Iron County Courthouse. The Bessemer Area Heritage Center on South Sophie Street is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. The center has a collection of logging and mining artifacts and memorabilia. Aside from the museum itself, there are three historical buildings on the grounds including an old jail, barber shop and oneroom schoolhouse. Copperfest Copperfest is a salute to the heritage of the area. Mining and lumbering activities are highlighted. Copperfest will be held July 19-21 in Ontonagon. National Outboard Motor Races Sunday Lake in Wakefield will be the site of the 2019 Stock and Junior National Championships for the American Power Boat Association. The event will be held from July 22-27. Races are set to run for four or five days from Monday through Friday, with extra time included, if needed, to compensate for bad weather. submitted the bid for the local races, all of which are sanctioned by the APBA. The event is free and will include food venders, a beer bar, and other local activities. Lake Gogebic Area As the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Lake Gogebic provides plenty of fun year round. With more than 13,000 acres in both Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, the lake offers walleye, jumbo perch, whitefish, smallmouth bass and northern pike. Kayaking has become very popular on the lake and on several bays and streams around the lake, and some resorts offer kayak rentals. Surrounding the 36-mile shoreline are opportunities for hiking among waterfalls, wildlife and the Ottawa National Forest. The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber also holds a monthly fishing contest and tagged fish contest from May 15-Sept. 14. In addition, the chamber will sponsor a John Murphy

Memorial Walleye Tournament on Sept. 13-14. It will include daily prizes for perch, smallmouth bass and northern pike. The weekend of June 8 and 9 will feature free fishing and ORV riding (no license required). The same weekend offers the Lake Gogebic Fireflies’ All-Lake Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 8. Golfing the courses on the Gogebic Range is an excellent way to spend a summer day. From the panoramic views from the Skye course on Whitecap Mountains near Iron Belt to the 18 holes at the Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet, there are plenty of tree-lined challenges for golfers of all levels. The Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood (906-932-2525) offers 18 holes on a mostly flat layout, with plenty of interesting holes that offer a variety of options. Perhaps the signature hole is the dogleg par four No. 14, guarded by deep bunkers on both sides. A steeply sloped green adds to the challenge. The long par 5 finishing hole, with a green that can be viewed from the dining area of the clubhouse, is another favorite. At the Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley (715-561-3552), the sloped greens are a challenge and the back nine can be brutal under windy conditions. Still, there are plenty of short holes that present birdie opportunities following accurate drives. The toughest hole is the par four No. 11, which doglegs right. It takes a healthy drive to get a look at the green and keeping the ball in play off the tee can be tough. Five is a good score on the 420-yard hole. Watersmeet’s Lac Vieux Desert (906-358-0303) course, with its blue grass fairways, is right next to the casino. The back nine is as challenging as any course in the area. Tahoe Lynx near Mercer (715-476-0050), offers nine holes in a wooded setting. Other courses include the Chequamegon Bay in Ashland, the Ontonagon Golf Club, the Gateway Golf Club in Land O’ Lakes, Wis., and the Mellen Country Club. The Iron Belle Trail is an ongoing and exciting new development in the area and across the state. It is a set of two trails that are planned to run throughout the state of Michigan from Ironwood to Belle Isle Park in Detroit. It is considered to be the longest designated state trail system in the nation. One trail is for hiking and the other for biking and other non-motorized use. The two scenic trails wind along the beautiful Northwoods landscape along rivers and other natural landmarks. Locally, the Western Gateway Trail Authority has been instrumental in building a paved trail from Ironwood to Bessemer, along a former railroad grade. The paved trail crosses many bridges and reaches into Hurley on the western end. Plans are being made to extend this trail from Bessemer to Ramsay, and then again to Wakefield. The North Country Trail along the Black River in northern Gogebic County and over to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park has been designated as part of the Iron Belle hiking trail. It is anticipated that the expansion will continue in years to come with a potential for connection with the Northern Highlands Regional Non-motorized Trail which begins in Mercer, Wis.

Paavo Nurmi Marathon The 51st Paavo Nurmi Marathon, scheduled for Aug. 10, will start and end in Hurley this year. The race offers a rare mid-summer marathon and is well-supported by hundreds of volunteers and spectators along its scenic course. The ninth annual half-marathon starts near Whitecap and also finishes in downtown Hurley. The marathon continues to offer twoperson and five-person relay events. The Paavo also continues to be a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Aid stations are available throughout Page 54 – Summer Fun & Dining Guide

the course. They are staffed by the Paavo’s large volunteer crew that comes back year after year. Area residents cheer on the runners as they make their way down Silver Street.
