WINTER T

he Gogebic Range is full of natural beauty all year around, but its deep snow winters remain the most popular time of the year for visitors. Snowmobilers, downhill skiers, crosscountry skiers and snowshoers find a myriad of winter playland opportunities. More than 400 miles of constantly groomed snowmobile trails, an array of alpine ski resorts, many kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails and an abundance of wilderness to snowshoe through await outdoor enthusiasts.

Page 6 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide

WELCOME TO WONDERLAND

A long weekend of fun in the snow won’t be enough for any family — plan a week on the Gogebic Range and visit the many shops and restaurants that dot the main streets of Ironwood, Hurley, Bessemer, Wakefield and surrounding towns. Take in a rare treat at one of Ironwood’s live theaters — many shows are performed by local talent. Discover the area’s rich history and how it turned from rugged wilderness where immigrant miners and loggers carved out a life in bustling communities in the 1880s, to the quaint small-town America it has become by touring one or all of the local history museums. The Iron County Historical Society’s Museum is open ‘year-round in Hurley and downtown Ironwood features a museum in Depot Park.

Skiers can try one hill after another or choose the one that suits them best, including the college-run Mt. Zion on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Big Powderhorn Mountain, Indianhead, Blackjack, Whitecap or the Porcupine Mountains. Bundle up and go inside to the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center, also on the college campus. The civic center has open ice-skating hours throughout the winter. A snack bar is available. While on the GCC campus, try snow tubing down Mt. Zion. There are lodging options for any budget or taste and eateries found nowhere else. Seeing and experiencing the Gogebic Range covered with snow is proof that family vacations don’t require beaches and warm temperatures. Rather than hibernating through winter, embrace and enjoy the season and its snow at any number of events or venues across the Gogebic Range.

Continued from page 8 runs, 10 intermediate blue runs and five beginner green runs. Indianhead has won several awards, with the terrain park selected as the 2014 OnTheSnow Visitors’ Choice pick for Best in the Midwest. It was also named Best Overall Ski Resort in the Midwest by OnTheSnow visitors and voted Best Family Resort in the Midwest in 2013 by the readers of Onthesnow.com. Indianhead and Blackjack offer a range of activities, ensuring there is something fun for everybody, regardless of skill level. For newcomers, the resort is implementing terrain-based learning this year at Indianhead — making it one of the first hills in the Midwest to do so. The concept uses natural terrain features to make it easier and more enjoyable for beginner skiers to learn the sport. For those looking for more of a challenge, the resort is expanding its glade skiing area at both hills — which involves skiing a course through a wooded area. Both hills also offer two terrain parks for those wanting to test Page 10 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide

their limits. Both hills will also have a Yeti Snow Fort kids area this year. A huge hit at Blackjack last year, the snow playground will include a tubing area and ice slide. Big Snow Resort also has partnerships with nearby ABR Trails and Mt. Zion tubing, meaning a Big Snow Resort lift ticket gets discounts at both lo-

cations. As the area is known for its snow, Big Snow Resort has also expanded into snowmobile rentals at Blackjack. Along with that, Cor Powersports snowmobile racing returns to Blackjack in early April. Call 1-800-346-3426 for information on the two hills or to purchase ski passes.

rom downhill skiing, to snowboarding, to cross-country skiing, Whitecap Mountains have

it all. Located in Iron County, Whitecap features 43 downhill ski runs, from double black diamond expert trails to beginner slopes. Smaller skiers can use a bunny hill with a rope tow or a polar bear bowl with a magic carpet lift, all within an area protected from the wind and other more experienced skiers. Ski hill operators make snow nightly on the more challenging runs when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. Overall lodging can facilitate up to 400 people. Whitecap Lodge offers rooms and suites, many with kitchens and some with Wi-Fi access. The lodge lobby also features “hot” Wi-Fi access. Situated on beautiful Weber Lake, near Upson and Iron Belt, trailside condominiums include ski-in and ski-out lodging and ski packages for families and groups. The Davos Chalet can hold groups of up to 40 people. After a day on the slopes, guests can relax in a swimming pool and a huge hot Page 12 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide

tub. The main lodge restaurant and bakery/deli are open during ski season, offering daily fare and banquet services. Also available is a gift shop and fullservice ski and snowboard rental and repair. Whitecap, Thunderhead and Eagles Nest are the three mountains that surround the ski resort, and they’re part of the ancient Penokee Range. Located on the western end of the

Lake Superior Snowbelt, Whitecap is located about 10 miles west of Hurley, off Wisconsin 77. Look for the Whitecap Mountains/Skye Golf turn-off immediately past the town of Iron Belt, and then travel 3.5 miles on County E to the resort. Depending on the weather, Whitecap’s skiing season may start the day after Thanksgiving. For more information, call 715-5612227, or visit skiwhitecap.com.

BIG POWDERHORN MOUNTAIN ig Powderhorn Mountain is making preparations for the 53rd year of skiing on the slopes near Bessemer. Skiers and snowboarders usually enjoy around a 100-day ski season that runs longer if snow arrives early and stays late. First opening for the 1963-'64 winter season, Big Powderhorn's main lodge is located right next to three ski lifts, with the beginners' area right at the base of the lodge. The main draw to the resort with a Bavarian style village is the 253 skiable acres — the most in Big Snow Country — with 33 trails and two terrain parks. The longest trail run is a full mile. To access the runs, there are nine double chairlifts and a beginner handle tow. The hill also features a lighted, outdoor ice rink. On New Year's Eve, there's a torchlight parade and fireworks over the mountain. Locally owned, and managed, Big Powderhorn has become a favorite with locals. The resort operators can make snow over 93 percent of the terrain. Powderhorn boasts a grooming department and offers an award-winning, professional ski patrol. The lodging, condominiums and houses surrounding the hill are capable of accommodating up to 2,000 people.

B

Page 14 – Winter Fun & Dining Guide

Food is available at the Caribou Resort and Bar, the Hideout Grill and bar in the Gun Barrel Lodge; along with live music and other entertainment. Ironwood and Hurley are only a few miles away, as are Bessemer and Wakefield. Big Powderhorn also hosts special events and weddings. Trails, by percentage, are rated: 35 percent novice, 35 percent more difficult and 30 percent most difficult. There are nine double chairlifts and a beginner handle tow with an uphill capacity of 10,800 skiers per hour. There's a school for skiing or snowboarding, for those who want to master a certain technique or just wanting to

enjoy the hill more. An introductory package includes lessons, rentals and lift tickets. Lessons can span from an hour to more than two hours. Groups needing lodging options can be fulfilled by Powderhorn Mountain Resort Lodging, from a full-sized chalet to well equipped condos. Some units offer lodging discounts for groups attending special functions at the Caribou Lodge. Call (906)932-4838 or 800-501-SNOW (7669) to confirm room rates and unit minimums or other restrictions that might apply. MT. ZION SKI AREA Gogebic Community College he Mt. Zion Ski Hill is a working laboratory for Gogebic Community College students enrolled in Ski Area Management. The students run the hill, gaining valuable skills and insight for future employment in the winter sports field. One of the biggest pieces of news coming out of Mt. Zion for the 2017-’18 ski year is an expanded snowmaking capability. In the past snow was not made all the way to the top of the hill, but beginning this year the snowmaking program is being expanded to cover the entire slope, which will enhance the local skiing, as Mt. Zion is well known as the place most local residents learn to ski. Mt. Zion has expanded hours during the Christmas break, except on Christmas, when it is closed. The facility offers reasonable season passes for individuals and families. The tubing hill has different hours than the ski hill. Tubing hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the Christmas holiday and Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Mt. Zion is planning on hosting another Snowcross event Dec. 16-17 and ski racing will begin in January. Ski racing has been an on-going spectacle on Mt. Zion for 30 years, starting at 10 a.m. Until complete, every Saturday starting in January. The Friday Night Fights in the Terrain Park begin between

T

6:30 and 7 p.m., until complete and offer a local competition for tricks done on the box and on the rails, which is free to the public. Located on the campus of Gogebic Community College, Mt. Zion is the oldest winter recreation complex in Big Snow Country. In addition to group rates, GCC students are allowed to ski or snowboard for free, as are senior citizens 62 years and older. Students in the SAM program run the facility, learning snowmaking and grooming as part of maintaining the hill. The SAM program also manages the ski hill at the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The SAM program provides technical and academic study, as well as internships at major ski resorts in the Midwest and others throughout the country. SAM students earn credits through onsite training classes such as ski area layout, snowmaking fundamentals, emergency response, slope grooming and classroom courses, such as business. Graduates of the SAM program may choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in ski area business management through an agreement with Northern Michigan University in Marquette. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING C

ross-country ski trails from Montreal to Mercer in northern Wisconsin’s Iron County and into the western Upper Peninsula offer access to a variety of terrain and scenery. Except for the privately-owned ABR, trails are maintained and groomed by volunteers – equipment

and fuel is a major expense for these local ski clubs. Daily use fees are deposited on an honor system in boxes at the trailheads or warming houses. Conditions, amenities, trail markers and degree of difficulty vary widely. There are areas where cellphones do not work.

Facility managers also warn that parents are responsible for using good judgment in terms of what age their children are ready to ski and at what age they may ski without adult companions. In general, skiing with at least one other companion allows for a safer experience.

Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails in Ironwood offer 15-18 miles, including several loops, for striders and skaters. Lake-effect snow provides the area with snow that tends to arrive earlier, pile deeper, and last longer than anywhere else in the Midwest. The rolling terrain offers trails for all levels of skiing, from expert to novice. In addition, four marked snowshoe trails, totaling 14 kilometers, range from expert to novice. All trails can be accessed at the chalet trailhead at 5851 Sunset Road. There are also trailheads behind Aspirus Ironwood Hospital and along Summit Road. The warming chalet offers a view of the historic wooden ski jump structure that was part of the club’s original activities. Cookies and hot chocolate are available in the chalet, which is open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. during the ski season. Volunteers with the Wolverine Nordic Ski Club maintain and groom the trail system. The nonprofit group promotes Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking and lifelong physical fitness. The club also supports ski programs in the schools. Fees are collected as a donation. Wolverine again will host the Aspirus Yooperbeiner Snowshoe Race-Walk on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018. site of a chalet built of logs cut and prepared by club members, is at 4686 N. Fierick Road. The chalet, which has a newly installed toilet system, has a changing room and wax bench, wood stove and hot chocolate. It is usually open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. during the ski season, which runs from November to April, depending on snow. A second site is known as Little Turtle Trailhead. Fees are collected as a donation. Volunteers with the MECCA CrossCountry Ski Association, which dates back about 20 years, groom the trails regularly. The club’s annual candlelight ski will be on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, from 69 p.m. Awaiting skiers at the cabin will be a wood fire, hot beverages and other refreshments. Trail use will be free for the event. For detailed directions, trail maps, and other information, visit skimecca.org. The Mercer Chamber of Commerce also offers free trail maps.

Uller Trail Uller Trail runs through the Penokee Range and is billed as the most remote ski trail in Wisconsin. Skiing with a companion is recommended along this 30-kilometer trail system described as “hilly and remote.” There is a Uller Trailhead in Upson at Weber Lake at the base of Whitecap Mountains downhill ski resort, just off County E. The trail runs east into the Pence area where there is a trailhead off Wisconsin 77. There are also trailheads off Hoyt Road north of Wisconsin 77 and in Iron Belt on North Road. The Penokee Rangers, a volunteer organization, maintain the trail and set the track. Donations are accepted for trail upkeep. For more information, visit norwiski.com or skinnyski.com.

Wis., range from easy to quite difficult. Easiest access to this 15-kilometer trail system is from the old city hall parking lot on Wisconsin 77, along the west branch of the Montreal River. The Penokee Rangers groom these trails. Donation boxes are located throughout the trail system. For more information, visit norwiski.com or skinnyski.com.

ABR Trails ABR Trails are located in Erwin Township, at E. 5299 W. Pioneer Road. This location is three miles south of U.S. 2, and it is the single access point. Operated by Eric Anderson and Angela Santini, Active Backwoods Retreats offers 70 kilometers of trails groomed for classic and skating styles. The trails run through woods and along the Montreal River in the area of Ironwood’s Norrie Park. Dogs are welcome on dog trails, which are designated on the map. There is also a snowshoe trail, along with opportunities for skijoring with dogs. Lodging accommodations, ranging from rustic cabins to luxury houses, are available at the ski complex, which also offers coffee and energy bars. The trails open at 9 a.m. seven days a week during the ski season, which usually starts by mid-November if snow allows. Trails close between 4-6 p.m., depending upon when it gets dark. Full ski equipment can be rented or purchased at the ski shop, which normally closes at 5 p.m. For more information or for trail conditions, visit abrski.com, call 906-9323502 or email info@abrski.com.

Miners Memorial Heritage Park The Miners Memorial Heritage Park in Ironwood features a groomed, easy trail for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. During the snow season, skiers may access the 2.6-mile trail at any time of day (or night, for skiers equipped with headlamps) at 775 E. Ayer St. from the Lorenson Baseball Field parking lot just east of the Ironwood school bus garage.

The entire park, which includes former iron ore mining locations within the city, also includes access from other locations. As a fundraiser for MMHP, a Candlelight Snowshoe and Ski will take place at the trail in December. In addition, on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, the ninth annual SISU Ski Fest again will include the park within its routes. Registration data is available at sisuskifest.com. The Miners Ski Trail (4.3 km) includes the the Aurora loop (1.6 km) and the Pabst loop (1.8 km). The Red Devil and Pabst Blue Ribbon snowshoe trails cover 4.5 km. For more information, visit fmmhp.com.

Iron Belle Trail The continued growth of the Iron Belle Trail gives winter silent sport enthusiasts one more option when exploring the western Upper Peninsula. The now 6-mile section of trail runs from just west of the Montreal River, bordering Ironwood and Hurley, to Moore Street in Bessemer, near U.S. 2. Open to snowshoeing and backcountry cross-country skiing, the lack of a groomer means the trail will be difficult for traditional cross-country skiers. Supporters hope to find a volunteer groomer for the trail. The trail, which follows the old Soo Line Railroad right-of-way, runs mostly through wooded areas, but it crosses numerous intersections that offer multiple access points, so as to tailor the length of the excursion. The Depot Park Trailhead is at 150 N. Lowell St. in downtown Ironwood. The trail is part of a regional trail that is planned to run between ski trails near Montreal, Wis., and Sunday Lake in Wakefield. Supporters also hope to have the trail connect to several others running throughout Wisconsin. Sometimes locally referred to as the Western Gateway Trail, it is the western end of the more grandly schemed Iron Belle Trail, which promoters hope eventually will link Ironwood to Belle Isle Park in Detroit.

SNOWMOBILING Gogebic County, Michigan he revitalized Gogebic Range Trail Authority met in October and is seeking new members to assist with trail work and to fill in as snowmobile trail groomers, according o the president of the organization. Steve Hamilton, of Wakefield, said the club will no longer do business as the Western Upper Peninsula Snowshakers and has returned to the GRTA name that had been used for the previous 40 years. Hamilton said the club recently received more than $250,000 in funding from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ snowmobile trail program. He said the funds will be used for major grooming equipment repairs, constructing a bridge on Trail 160 in north

T

Ironwood that was damaged by the July 11-12 storm, beaver abatement near Marenisco and trail work in the Indianhead Mountain and Wakefield areas. “The Michigan DNR and GRTA have maintained constant communication to address these major concerns for the upcoming snowmobile season, but it will not be enough,” Hamilton said, urging more community support. The GRTA “is actively seeking new members to help with upcoming trail improvement work to fill critical groomer operator positions and help with fundraising events,” he said. “The GRTA needs immediate community membership and support from Gogebic County residents to insure the backbone of the local economy not only

survives, but thrives,” Hamilton said. The club grooms trails that connect with other systems throughout the county. “The GRTA has worked to provide its membership with funding and the resources required to operate an elite trail grooming program, but the GRTA needs groomer operators and volunteers to see the mission through,” he said. Hamilton said an entirely new GRTA board of directors was elected earlier this year and within 90 days, it paid off two-thirds of the organization’s debt. The club also provides snowmobilers with daily update on trails. For more information, call 608-5776653 or visit President@GogebicRangeTA.org.

Called the Snow Capital of Wisconsin, annual snowfall often exceeds 200 inches. The county is the heart of excellent snowmobiling with trails connecting with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Vilas, Price and Ashland counties. With plenty of lodging and snowmobile rentals, the county comes alive with sleds during snowy winter weekends. Snow-blanketed forests filled with the sights and sounds of the Wisconsin Northwoods are what allure many snowmobilers to Iron County. Riders and the Mercer Sno Goers, groom some of the most scenic trails in the country. From the Iron Horse Trail in Hurley, the ride to Saxon and Gurney covers 12 miles, with places to stop for gas, food and refreshments along the way. A ride on Trail 2 to Saxon Harbor is a pleasant diversion for the avid snowmobiler. A journey on Trail 17 guides riders south out of Hurley along the Michigan border past beautiful Pine Lake. SNOWMOBILING Ontonagon County, Michigan

S

nowmobiling in Ontonagon County continues to grow in popularity, as visitors come from many states to enjoy the ride. The hub of snowmobiling in the south end of Ontonagon County revolves around the Bergland area and Lake Gogebic. The impact of the sport can be seen during the winter in front of gas stations, motels, bars and restaurants. Businesses in Bergland call the first snowfall each year “white gold.” The key to bringing snowmobilers back each year is great grooming and Gogebic Area Grooming is the snowmobile club which grooms more than 160 miles of trails. Grooming starts late in the afternoon and runs all night,

every night, as long as there is snow. They groom both sides of Lake Gogebic, all the way to Presque Isle, Tula on M-28, the South Boundary Road to Ewen and the Norwich Road on 13. The financial impact of snowmobiling business has been estimated by the Michigan Snowmobiling Association at $250,000 a mile. Bergland draws snowmobilers from many states, including Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and the Dakotas. The North Country Snowmobile Club grooms 110 miles of trails in north Ontonagon County, covering South Boundary Road, Greenland, Porkies, White Pine and surrounding areas.

SISU SKI FEST t takes some sisu to take part in this challenging but fun race. The ninth annual Sisu Ski Fest is set for Jan. 6, 2018, in downtown Ironwood. Sisu is a Finnish word that means "special strength and stubborn determination to continue and overcome in the moment of adversity; a combination of stamina, courage and obstinacy held in reserve for hard times." Some simply translate it to mean “guts.” The "Finnish Line" is in downtown Ironwood. The distances of the main races are 31K and 15K events with the beginning at ABR Ski Trails. There is also a 5K race, the Hauska Hiihto 5K Fun Ski, a non-competitive event, and the Depot Dash (kids fun ski event). The Depot Dash Friday, Jan. 5,is free for children 10 and under. It will be at Ironwood’s Depot Park.

JACK FROST FESTIVAL ronwood’s Jack Frost Festival is always a winter favorite, and this year will not disappoint. But there are some changes in timing for 2017. The popular Festival of Lights parade no longer will take place on Friday evening, but instead is set for Saturday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. The change in timing creates more opportunities for local businesses and also eases scheduling issues for families with school-age children. This year’s parade will begin at the Carnegie Library on Aurora Street and will continue down the main street to the corner of Lowell Street. The 23rd annual Jack Frost Festival is themed “A Mechanical Christmas,” with the Gogebic Range Robotics Club serving as the Parade Grand Marshal. In 2016, more than 40 floats vied for first, second and third place trophies, and at least that many are expected this year. Along with the parade timing, another change is that Santa and Mrs. Claus, who normally have greeted children after the parade, instead will be available before the parade, from 3 to 5 p.m. in their “Candy Cane Court” hosted by River Valley Bank at 200 S. Suffolk St. in Ironwood. After the parade, the Gogebic Range Concert Band is scheduled tentatively to perform at the Historic Ironwood Theatre. The festival, which is made possible by a volunteer army, features a variety of holidaythemed activities in the days leading up to the parade. The downtown lights up with holiday decorations, and a storefront decorating contest inspires a friendly, competitive spirit that results in someone earning a floating trophy. Other festival events include a tree-lighting ceremony, gingerbread-making workshops, and a gingerbread house contest. Moreover, since this year’s parade will be held on Saturday, the Downtown Development Authority hopes to fill the Friday evening gap with related First Friday activities. As the schedule develops, a Jack Frost Facebook page will provide details, along with the Ironwood Chamber of Commerce at ironwoodchamber.org.

ICE FISHING he Ottawa National Forest has more than 500 named lakes to ice fish. Ice fishing on lakes within the Ottawa is permitted, except on Sylvania Wilderness special provision lakes. Very few roads which lead to lakes on the forest are plowed, however, during the winter. Anglers need to be familiar with all rules and regulations related to fees, seasons, species and licensing by obtaining a Michigan fishing guide. Snowmobilers must be in accordance with the motor vehicle rules of the forest. In the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan trout season runs from the last Saturday in April to Sept. 30. Later seasons are set for bass, walleye, northern pike and muskellunge. Generally, spring (May-June) is the best time for lake fishing on the Ottawa; summer (July-August) is somewhat slower, with fall (September-October) somewhere in between.

T

Stream fishing for lake-run salmon and steelhead usually picks up around April 1 in streams with an extended troutsalmon season, such as on the East Branch of the Ontonagon River, north of M-28, or those with no closed season. The best fishing on those streams starts around mid-September and lasts until the snow flies. Stream fishing for resident trout is generally best near the end of the legal season, especially for brook trout, which start upstream migration at this time. Walleyes and crappies tend to bite best under low light conditions (early morning, late evening or on overcast days). Fish for bass, crappies, pike, and panfish near logs, brush, or in weedy areas. In bright sunlight, and after storms or cold snaps, most fish tend to go deeper and are harder to get to bite. Use live bait, and fish deeper and slower under those conditions.

WISCONSIN WINTER FUN Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce iven Hurley’s history as a mining town, it has always been known as a place to find fun, food and friends, and that doesn’t change during the long winter season. The Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce is one sure place to guarantee that you will not run out of things to do here, even on the coldest, snowiest of days. The chamber, for instance, maintains snowmobile and ATV maps for the entirety of Iron County, and also promotes community sporting events and other activities. Planned for this winter is the Winter Extravaganza Snowshoe Fundraiser at Gile Flowage Park on Saturday, Feb. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. The event, which allows the Hurley Fireworks Committee to raise funds for the 4th of July, will include a 2 p.m. snowshoe run-walk. Also on Feb. 3, from 4-11:45 p.m., will be the Mid-Winter Snow Party at the Iron County Memorial Building. This will include live music, food and other activities, including a dart

G

tournament. Also, the Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus will take place at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds during the last weekend in December, 2017, and during the first weekend of January, 2018. The Hurley area also offers tubing, skating, ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. More than 500 miles of snowmobile trails lead to waterfalls, woods, and Lake Superior. The trails stay groomed with the help of the White Thunder Riders, the Mercer SnoGoers, and the Iron County Forestry Department. The chamber’s website has a current snowmobile map. Next summer, the Hurley chamber will help sponsor the 50th annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon, scheduled next for Aug. 11, 2018. Oher key summer events will include the Iron County Fair in Saxon and the Heritage Festival. Visit the chamber office at 316 W. Silver St. or call 715561-4334, or visit the chamber website at hurleywi.com.

Mercer Chamber of Commerce s “the Loon Capital of the World,” Mercer is no stranger to tourists. But even though the town’s thousands of loons seek tropical winter sites, the town they leave behind still harbors visitors and activities, even in the chilliest months. One of the earliest winter events will be on Saturday, Dec. 2, when Santa Claus will visit Loon Town all day at the Mercer Community Center. Beyond that, throughout the season, tourists and local residents enjoy snow sports ranging from snowmobiling to snowshoeing, to cross-country skiing and ice fishing. The Mercer Sno-Goers Snowmobile Club, which turned 50 years old this year, maintains close to half of Iron County’s 450 miles of state-funded trails.

A

Volunteers of the club also engage in social activities, such as a Winter Blast that is open to the public. About 200 lakes in Iron County are just the spot for ice fishing, and Mercer’s bait shops are happy to help fishermen to prepare for both quiet, solitary days or the area’s several fishing tournaments. Cross-country skiers can use about 18 kilometers of trails south of Mercer. The MECCA Cross-Country Ski Association grooms the trails regularly. Mecca also offers an annual Candlelight Ski event, including warm beverages and other treats. For more information, visit the Mercer Chamber of Commerce at 5150 N. U.S. 51 in Mercer, call 715-476-2389, or visit online at mercercc.com.

PAT O’DONNELL CIVIC CENTER he Patrick O’Donnell Civic Center, located on the campus of Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, provides a location for community members to enjoy open skating during the winter months. The center, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013, also hosted roller skating this past summer. The arena is home of the Ironwood Fighting Yoopers junior hockey team which brings skaters from all over the world to Ironwood. The team practices in the arena and hosts weekend games there October through February. The Ice Crystals Figure Skating Club takes its turn on the ice, as well, where members leap, twirl and spin through lessons and work on solo and group routines. A big spring show is planned every year. The Polar Bear Hockey Club offers youth hockey for various age groups. Oldtimers gather for open hockey on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. There’s no checking or slap shots to reduce the risk of

injury. The facility is also a venue for numerous one-day events like a New Year’s Eve party, concerts, circuses and home and trade shows. The center is supported by taxpayers’ millage and it was constructed primarily as a recreational center for youth of the Gogebic Range. The building contains around 28,000 square feet with an ice surface of 17,000 square feet. The bleachers seat 1,000 people, plus there’s room for an additional 2,000 on the floor for large gatherings. Open skating is already under way, with normal scheduled hours to begin the second week of November, running through mid-March. Open skating hours are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. There are even more open skating opportunities over the holidays. For more information, call 906-932-0602.

St. Mary’s church has several involved ministries: We have a group of dedicated lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and several lay ministers. We have an active communion distribution group for shut-ins and nursing homes and they provide many other ministries. We also have committed Pastoral and finance Councils in place. We have an active music ministry, as well as a Religious Education, Youth Ministry and adult bible study. St. Mary’s is a warm, welcoming, faith community. 404 Iron Street, Hurley, Wisconsin 54534 • 715-561-2606
