DEAR READER, Széchenyi István University is proud that its work is perceived not only as professional, educational and meets a high standard of scientific research but also as being social responsible. Our students will not only be engineers, technical educators, IT specialist, lawyers, economists, musicians, health and social science professionals but will also be the intellectuals of the country and this region, who are social responsible as well. Széchenyi István University in Győr emphasizes basic research next to the applied sciences so our educator-researcher colleagues have seen what will be and what could be within five years. Moreover, they not only see but also shape the future actively. Our university has been undertaking the building of an exemplary model of the changing Hungarian higher education system. To this we have found excellent partners: the city of Győr and the energetic regional industry within Audi Hungaria, which is committed to the community and the society and the active students who are proud of their university. The effect of the economy of Győr, the regional organizational power of the city and the university’s influence can be felt not only in the city but well beyond its borders into the surrounding area and region. The purpose of the university is to be the intellectual and developmental centre of Győr, which is closely connected to the economy of the area. We are building the future in Győr!

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Péter Földesi rector

GYŐR WHERE THE FUTURE IS BUILT Situated half way between Budapest and Vienna in an ideal location and in many respects this large Hungarian town offers everybody a safe future with great opportunities and continuous renewal. Győr is the capital of the domestic car industry, as well as, the cultural economic and industrial centre of Northern Transdanubia. The county seat is also the region’s scientific, healthcare and administration centre. There are continuous consultations between the local authorities and the management of key businesses. The renewed vocational training concept of the town enables us to adjust the labour supply to investors’ needs setting up their businesses here. The Industrial Park of the town is developing and expanding and currently offers sites to

companies from 14 countries on an area of several hundreds of hectares. With its modernised traffic, cosy downtown, a lot of green areas and excellent educational institutions the town of rivers and meetings sets an example for all settlements. Győr is an ideal and lovely place to live where knowledge is as valuable as healthcare or human relations.

THE INNOVATIVE REGION In contrast to the global economic crisis at the beginning of the new millennium, in Győr and its closest surroundings there has started an unprecedented dynamic economic development. A lot of companies have recognised the exploitable potential in the region, above all in the car industry, which led to intensive developments. One of Hungary’s most important companies, the strategic partner of our university, Audi Hungaria Motor Ltd., is carrying out new investments, as a result of which more than 10,000 new jobs will be created. Széchenyi István University has a big role in providing well-qualified engineers with hands-on experience and language knowledge. Our institution has been in close connection with the region’s major businesses and based on feedback it adjusts its training programme to the relevant needs of the labour market.

siders fostering international relations as a major aim. Due to this, teachers from various countries ranging from New Zealand, through Britain to Canada give lectures and numerous students attend our courses. Through our well-built relations and the Erasmus programme our students may apply for scholarships to the universities of more than 20 countries including Spain, Greece and the Baltic states. A part of our training takes place in a foreign language.

The faculty mostly deals with research in applied economics. In case of corporations we focus on management – leadership and market problems; in the case of SMEs we tackle the external and internal conditions affecting their overall management. Our research activities involve the science of marketing, human resources management and knowledge management, moreover, the development of business networks and the issues of corporate financing. All these topics are investigated from a geographic aspect at regional, national and international levels. The findings of research are presented at scientific conferences, professional symposia, and published in special journals and university periodicals. Every year the faculty organises for its existing and potential business partners the event ‘Company Meeting’ to enhance the organisation of field placements, common research projects and general relations.

There are several research groups at the faculty, such as the Information Society Education and Research Group, the Water Environment Technologies and Strategic Services Research Centre and the CentralEastern European and Balkan Research Centre. Deák Ferenc FACULTY OF LAW AND POLITICAL SCIENCES The legal education following a century-old tradition in Győr was relaunched in 1995. Széchenyi István University in its own right has hosted and looked after the Faculty of Law since 2002. Deák Ferenc Faculty of Law and Political Sciences was established in 2007. It offers high quality education based on a close relationship between students and professors, it has widespread national and international relations and its inherent creative force is based on a practice-oriented training. In the North-Transdanubean region only our department offers legal and administrative training. The powerful economic, judicial and public services sectors are both supporters and a potential labour market. In ranking the department’s potential we can state that our lecturers possess academic qualifications, have practical experience and are student- friendly. Our department’s professors work in constitutional courts and have leadership positions in regional and national legal administration postings. They are willing to share with the students their knowledge and expertise they have acquired in national and international institutions. In assembling the training material we especially focus on providing both theoretical and practical knowledge. This knowledge can be used in different sectors of the economy. This is the reason why we strongly support acquiring professional experience alongside in depth academic studies. With this experience and with the help of per-

10

SZE-GYŐR

sonal contacts the students will have the opportunity to find a successful job. The undivided legal education provides the basis of the department’s training for both full-time and part-time students or correspondence students. There is an outstanding proportion of our graduates who are able to find jobs in our region. The national report shows that they can find places of work easier than the average. Besides the traditional legal careers, the law degree can enable those to enter the economic and financial sector, the media sector or into the world of politics. Our university was the first in the country to establish the International Administration course. Students graduating this course will become administrative organizers and will be able to use their knowledge in the international relations system. This course is offered at the bachelor’s and master’s level for full-time and part-time correspondence students.

Special attention is paid to our talented students. We support them to improve their knowledge of languages and in carrying out research in scientific student circles. The Batthyány Lajos Szakkollégium (Honour Roll Student College) is an accredited vocational college, which focuses on the individual activities of the most talented students in regards to professional, scientific, cultural and community work. The department’s “A” category scientific edition, “Law-State-Politics” is a journal that

has been published quarterly since 2009. The journal contains proofread studies and reviews covering the field of administrative, legal and political sciences. The authors of the articles are leading researchers and professors in the above-mentioned fields of science. In addition, foreign researchers and even students of our Doctoral School have the opportunity to publish in the journal. The Parliamentary Research Centre operates in the department and carries out research in the field of legislation, constitutional law, public administration and political science. The department does research on examining the aspects of national and international private law as well as complex jurisprudential analysis of the transport system. We put great effort in developing the quality of our training by building networks with European Union and Central European institutions involved in tertiary education and research. Our faculty conducts active cooperation with universities and professional institutions in Vienna, Brno, Bratislava, Bialystok and Novi Sad. We offer opportunities for students to study abroad through Erasmus projects, mostly in Passau, Pisa, Utrecht, Salzburg and Warsaw.

garian Government included the creation of educational and research laboratories, which all support the students in their studies. In addition, the acquired knowledge is recognized both in Hungary and even beyond the borders of our country. We closely collaborate with the county hospital and with the region’s several health and social institutes. We recently created a high bandwidth database between our institution and the Petz Aladár County Educational Hospital. This allows for research and educational activity at a national and international level.

VARGA TIBOR INSTITUTE OF MUSICAL ART Our Music Institution is one of the sixth music institutions of higher education, which is located in the 19th century synagogue. The building has excellent and wonderful acoustics and it is one of the country’s most beautiful concert halls. The University Concert Hall is not only a training centre but also a favourite place for cultural life.

We train orchestral and chamber musicians, musical instruments teachers as well as music schoolteachers. The music schoolteacher students complete their methodological practice and their special teaching practice at the Richter János Music Vocational School and the Bartók Béla Choir and Music Primary School. There are three main ensembles in our Institute. The University Orchestra led by Gergely Ménesi and The Győr Symphonic Band led by Ferenc Szabó are regular participants in the cultural life of Győr. The third is our youngest ensemble, the University Choir. The members of the Choir, in addition to training our students, would like to attract the town’s citizens and in collaboration with the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra they are preparing high-level pieces of work. High bandwidth data provides the appropriate training and IT background, which is achieved with the help of European projects together with the campus and the institution.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY DOCTORAL SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING SCIENCES The Multidisciplinary Doctoral School of Engineering Sciences was established in May 2005. The trends of its research and the focus on its training are connected to the traditions of Széchenyi István University as well as to the future expectations of the institute. On the other hand, it is a priority to take into account the region’s demand for industrial research, which has a strong international importance.

The latest tendencies of the scientific and technological development justify the fact that the multidisciplinary results not only in synthesis but in synergy as well. In compliance with this principle the activities of the doctoral school is strongly concerned about several related sciences, such as construction engineering, information technology and traffic engineering. The courses provided by the doctoral school provide the

14

SZE-GYŐR

opportunity for students to acquire a deep insight into different areas, as the research themes themselves are related to a variety of areas in the sciences. This is certified by the publications of national and international researchers. The themes and the team of authors highlight the interdisciplinary nature of this. The doctoral school through its international activity has close connections with many well-known institutions and experts.

DOCTORAL SCHOOL OF regionaland economic sciences The aim of the doctoral school and the associated research program is to reveal the future trends of cooperation in the Central-Eastern European area and to explore their push and pull factors. Furthermore our mission is to find out economic, social and institutional relationships because if there is a strong interconnection between the factors of the economy there will be more lively connections between them, which in the long run will lead to a stronger European integration.

Therefore there is a need to do research on the current and future co-operations. All these would only be realised in a stable economic climate, so it is necessary to study their effects. In addition there is a need to look inside the work of the players who have a great impact on changes such as the conduct and behaviour of the European Union, member countries, local communities and the civil society. More attention is paid to market connections, corporate partnerships, human factors and the study of different levels of strategic methods and their accomplishments. The profile of the doctoral school is to give the appropriate scientific degree and the development of regional studies, as well as economic and organizational sciences. The latter is mostly concerned with the role of marketing and management studies. During the organized training (semesters I-IV) basic and professional subjects help students to master the basic theoretical and methodological knowledge. There is a wide range of electives the students can choose

from in order to broaden their special knowledge, which reinforces them with professional surpluses. Part of the training includes scientific conferences, workshops and opportunities for publication (yearbooks, periodicals). We invite foreign presenters who inform us about new trends in research and make us aware of new scientific problems. We also support study tours abroad for our students, opportunities for publications and we continuously ensure their participation in doing research. The training is supported by well-equipped classrooms, well-known researchers, qualified professors and their assistant teachers; there are continuous opportunities for consultation and professional communications. The effectiveness is indicated by the fact that since its foundation in 2004, one in five students obtained their degrees, that is 23%. On an annual basis 13-15 students get a placement and, out of these, 3-4 students receive grants, the others take part in correspondence courses.

Centre for Knowledge Management and International Relations

The Centre for Knowledge Management and International Relations started its operation as a department of Széchenyi István University in October 2009. It manages the intellectual property of the university. In April 2013 the centre merged with the International Project Centre. Its activities and development are strongly related to TÁMOP 4.2.1. and TÁMOP 4.2.3. applications and pilot actions.

It is focused on putting into practice the potential knowledge of the university, generating and managing innovative projects. The centre has an important role to play in protecting the intellectual property, patenting and enabling technology transfer. In addition, by mapping the competences of the departments and the infrastructure of the laboratories it facilitates the development of scientific and economic relations and looks for collaboration opportunities based on the internal and external market demands. The centre has a major role in organizing academic and scientific events, in searching and supporting talented students. In addition, it gives support to the Advanced Colleges, Doctoral Schools, and helps the academic work of the student circles. It supports the gifted students by

offering twice a year the opportunity to apply for “SZE Duó” prototype development. In the framework of the business model competition students can get significant assistance from both the university and the mentors who are executives and managers at important companies in Győr. The best startups are encouraged by various prizes offered by the sponsors. The centre with the help of the university incubator also provides discounts to students to rent offices on the second floor and also offers a variety of services and trainings in the University Library building. The focus of the international activities of the centre is to support the student and staff mobility, to participate in creating conditions for foreign language courses, and to build international partnerships.

University Business Incubator

The aim of the IN-Spiral Creative Background and the IN-Cube University Business Incubation Centre, both formed as part of a European Union project, is to support the foundation of businesses and the development of research findings and individual skills, and therefore the creation of new jobs. The businesses set up in the university business incubator, belonging to the Knowledge Management Centre, can operate with favourable rental costs, in a modern environment. The incubator does not only provide offices and a laboratory infrastructure at a reduced cost but it involves a much wider scope of services. For the businesses operating within the “open innovation lab”, university infrastructure is more accessible and it is easier to make contact with university laboratories, university researchers and the students who may be involved in the innovation projects.

The 3 wings of the building are capable of housing a total of 1150 students. Rooms have three beds, equipped with cable TV, a refrigerator and internet connection. Two rooms plus a bathroom constitute one housing unit. Each corridor includes a fully equipped kitchen. Further services that are available are: photocopying, computer cabinet, buffet, gym, and laundry facility.

20 SZE-GYŐR

In the External Dormitory (Külső Kollégium), which can be accessed by a 15-minute bus ride, 420 students can be housed. There are two- and three-bed rooms in the building. The common two-bed housing units also include a kitchenette and bathroom. Cable TV and internet connection are provided here as well. Its calm atmosphere and modern facilities make External Dormitory an ideal place for both study and recreation.

Active life and sports A meaningful life involves a healthy lifestyle and active exercise, and it should not be forgotten during one’s studies either. Széchenyi István University has its own sports hall, gym and sports fields.

Several sports – for example football, basketball, handball, triathlon, judo, chess, volleyball, and table tennis – can be pursued, both as leisurely and competitively. The campus, located on the banks of the MosoniDanube, also offers water sport facilities to its students. Whether it is a 5-a-side football, a streetball or wall climbing competition, or the traditional cross-country running in the Püspökerdő – the university aspires to offer sporting facilities to everyone, satisfying each student’s individual needs. We believe we have to not only train our minds, in the fields of scientific knowledge but our aim is to raise healthy generations who will not forget the importance of physical activity even later, in their professional careers. The athletes of the university achieve outstanding results in competitive sports, both

in individual and team competitions. Besides those who are among the best in the world, the institution is also proud of their alumni who have won national or university-level championships and its teams that have excelled in the first, second or third divisions. Although not everyone can become a first-class athlete, nature (as for the use of exercise) is always close at hand. On the renewed campus, with lots of green areas and the river banks, a well-equipped boat centre and bicycle storage racks were built, which are used by both students and teachers. Whether someone starts a sightseeing tour in the town on water, by bike or on foot, he or she can realize that the rivers, bridges, parks, groves, the Radó Island, the Püspökerdő, the squares and alleys of the historical town centre all have the same message: there is hardly a more ideal environment for intellectual development.
