Isaac came into existence in 2001, and what started with the development of carbon components â&#x20AC;&#x201C; specifically carbon forks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has subsequently evolved into an innovative pioneering position in the bicycle industry. Carbon has always served as our raw material. Still, no matter how advanced the specific fibres, resins and weaves may be, they are useless if they are not applied properly. Thanks to our many years of experience with carbon, we lead the way when it comes to how these composite materials are wrapped or placed in the mould, allowing us to apply multiple monocoque structures. We had already proven the advantages with respect to weight, rigidity and strength before we actually applied these techniques. Trailblazing is the basis of our success, after all.

PIETER WEENING Na een periode van vier jaar Down Under bij Orica-GreenEDGE keerde Pieter Weening terug in Nederlandse dienst bij Team Roompot Oranje Peloton. Wij spraken Pieter op de vooravond van zijn ‘thuiswedstrijd’ in de Eneco Tour, over zijn rol als wegkapitein en zijn koersfiets, de Isaac Element. Ook vroegen we hem naar zijn mening over de veelbesproken disc brakes.

e 35-jarige geboren Fries is woonachting in het Belgische Lanaken waar de zesde etappe van de Eneco Tour finisht. Het parcours voert dwars door zijn trainingsgebied. “Die wegen waar we morgen koersen ken ik allemaal. Er zal geen weggetje tussen zitten waar ik nog nooit geweest ben.” JE BENT DE OUDSTE VAN HET TEAM. WAT KUNNEN DE JONGERE RENNERS VAN JE LEREN? “Als we praten over koersmomenten dan heb ik de meeste situaties al heel vaak meegemaakt. Dan zie je vooral dat ik de rust kan bewaren omdat ik weet wat er gaat gebeuren. In veel koersen weet ik wat de cruciale punten zijn om mee voorin te zitten. Alle koersen in Limburg heb ik al vaker gereden en het is natuurlijk ook mijn trainingsgebied. Ik ken het hier als mijn broekzak. De Eneco Tour is een World Tour koers en er staan renners aan de start die je niet zomaar even voorbij fietst. Onze ploeg moet er gewoon met de volle beuk in. We hebben er niks aan om het op een sprint aan te laten komen. Dat soort dingen weet je gewoon. Bij Orica fietste ik met renners die al grote koersen hadden gewonnen. Die winnaarsmentaliteit probeer ik over te brengen aan de jongere renners waar ik nu mee koers. In een team als Roompot kunnen ze vaak voor hun eigen kansen gaan terwijl ze bij een grote ploeg meestal in een knechtenrol beginnen. Ik vind het mooi om

te zien hoe die jongere gasten zich optrekken aan de meer ervaren renners van het team en niet achter willen blijven als de koers hard wordt gemaakt. De meeste jonge renners hebben vooral in het vlakke Nederland gekoerst en al heel veel gewonnen. In het buitenland is het parcours vaak heuvelachtig en dat maakt het al meteen een stuk lastiger. Ik probeer ze er bewust van te maken dat ze in een leerproces zitten en dat ze alleen maar beter worden.” TIJDENS MEERDAAGSE ETAPPEKOERSEN ZOALS DE ENECO TOUR REIS JE VAN HOTEL NAAR HOTEL. HOE BELEEF JE DIT? “Wij finishen altijd rond vijf uur ‘s middags en dan zijn net de meeste mensen onderweg naar huis. Als we van stad naar stad reizen zitten we vaak vast in het verkeer. Als mij tijdens de koers iets is opgevallen aan de

HOE speelt Isaac in op je wensen MET BETREKKING TOT het materiaal? “De Isaac Element is een hele lichte fiets en tegelijkertijd is hij erg stijf bij het bracket. Voor mij als klimmer is die combinatie goud waard en het is een van de betere, zo niet de beste fiets waar ik ooit mee gereden heb. Als je op het hoogste niveau mee wilt doen zul je het beste materiaal tot je beschikking moeten hebben, anders ben je al bij voorbaat geklopt. Als ik kijk naar onze tijdritfiets dan zie je dat Isaac er alles aan heeft gedaan om de Isaac Muon zo optimaal mogelijk te laten voldoen aan onze wensen en behoeften. Als ik op- of aanmerkingen heb dan laat ik dat weten aan onze mecaniciens die dit dan weer terugkoppelen naar Isaac zodat ze dit mee kunnen nemen in de verdere ontwikkeling van de fiets.” HET ROOMPOT ORANJE PELOTON FIETSTE ALS EERSTE MET DISC BRAKES IN EEN WORLD TOUR KOERS. HOE DENK JE ZELF OVER HET FIETSEN MET DISC BRAKES? “Qua remkracht is het inderdaad stukken beter. Maar ik vind dat je in een peloton niet gemixt kunt fietsen. Het verschil in

VOOR DE RECREANT BIEDT ISAAC STEEDS MEER MODELLEN MET DISC BRAKES AAN. HOE KIJK JE NAAR DEZE ONTWIKKELING? “Voor recreanten zijn disc brakes nu al een groot voordeel. Ze zorgen voor een

veel kortere remweg, helemaal in natte weersomstandigheden. Als het heeft geregend merk ik zelf ook dat een wiel eerst 5 of 6 keer rond moet draaien voordat de velgrand droog genoeg is om goed te kunnen remmen. Recreanten met carbonvelgen hebben hier toch iets minder ervaring mee. Daarbij zijn disc brakes ook een stuk duurzamer voor je velgen. Disc pads gaan een stuk langer mee dan een setje remblokken. HOE ZIET JE DAGELIJKS LEVEN ER UIT ALS ER GEEN KOERS IS? “Buiten de koers om draait het allemaal om training. Na het ontbijt stap ik steevast op de fiets en dit neemt het grootste deel van mijn dag in beslag. Na het zomerseizoen pak ik altijd een maand rust. Vanaf half november begin ik dan weer te fietsen, al is dit in het winterseizoen een stuk minder dan in de zomer of het voorjaar. Dan heb ik veel meer tijd voor andere dingen zoals het kijken naar voetbal en het buiten de deur eten met vrienden. Maar je zult me nooit om drie uur ‘s nachts in een kroeg vinden.”

After four years Down Under with Orica-GreenEDGE, Pieter Weening is going Dutch again with Roompot Oranje Peloton. We talked to Pieter on the eve of his ‘home match’ in the Eneco Tour, his role as road captain and his racing bicycle: the Isaac Element. We also asked him what he thinks about the widely-discussed disc brakes.

The route goes right through the very area where he trains. “I know all of the roads we’ll be racing on tomorrow. There isn’t a single one that I haven’t been on.” YOU’RE THE OLDEST ON THE TEAM. WHAT CAN THE YOUNGER RACERS LEARN FROM YOU? “When we talk about race scenarios, I’ve experienced virtually every situation many times. Mostly this manifests itself into me being able to keep everyone calm because I know what’s coming. I know the crucial moments to be out in front on many routes. I have been in every race in Limburg multiple times, and obviously this is where I train, too. I know the area like the back of my hand. The Eneco Tour is a World Tour race and the riders on the starting line are not guys you’re

going to breeze past. Our team’s job is to go full-force. Letting it come down to a sprint won’t work for us. Those are the things that you just know. At Orica, I was riding with guys who had won major races. I try to instil that winner’s mentality in the younger riders I’m racing with now. On a team like Roompot, they can often pursue their individual opportunities, whereas on a major team they tend to start out as a domestique. I think it’s fantastic to see how these younger guys lean on the more experienced riders on the team and do not want to stay behind when it’s time to attack the race. Most of the young riders have raced primarily in the flat Netherlands

and already chalked up a lot of wins. Outside the Netherlands, the route tends to be hilly, which instantly makes it quite a bit more difficult. I try to make them aware of the fact that they are in a learning process, and that are only getting better.” DURING MULTI-DAY STAGE RACES, INCLUDING THE ENECO TOUR, YOU TRAVEL FROM HOTEL TO HOTEL. WHAT IS IT LIKE FOR YOU? “We always finish around 5pm, right as most commuters are heading home. If we’re travelling from city to city, we often end up stuck in traffic. If I noticed something about the bicycle during the race, I have plenty of time on the bus to discuss it with the mechanic or one of the team leaders so they can adjust it before the next race. HOW does Isaac anticipate your preferences IN TERMS OF the material? “The Isaac Element is a very light bicycle, but at the same time it’s very rigid at the bracket. For a climber like me, this combination is invaluable, and it’s one of the better, if not the best, bicycles I’ve ridden so far. If you want to compete at the highest level, you have to have access to the best material, otherwise you’re beaten from the very start. When I look at our time trial bikes, it’s plain to see that Isaac has done everything in its power to make sure the Isaac Muon meets our wishes and needs as best as possible. If I have any comments, I tell our mechanics, who in turn will share these with Isaac to incorporate in the bike’s ongoing development.” ROOMPOT ORANJE PELOTON WAS THE FIRST TO RIDE WITH DISC BRAKES IN A WORLD TOUR RACE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RIDING WITH DISC BRAKES? “As far as braking power goes it’s certainly a lot better. However, I’m against mixed cycling in a race. The difference in braking power is massive, which can cause dangerous situations. Plus, carrying replacement parts

for both systems makes things a lot more difficult for the service cars. Nevertheless, I’m convinced everyone will switch to disc brakes. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, it’s that simple. ISAAC’S SELECTION OF BIKES WITH DISC BRAKES FOR RECREATIONAL CYCLISTS CONTINUES TO INCREASE. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS DEVELOPMENT? “Disc brakes already offer recreational cyclists a huge advantage. They make the breaking distance much shorter, especially in wet weather conditions. If it has rained, I notice that a wheel has to make five or six revolutions before the rim is dry enough to be able to brake properly. Recreational cyclists with carbon rims simply don’t have as much experience with this. Disc brakes are a significantly more sustainable choice for your rims too. Disc pads last considerably longer than a set of brake pads.

THEY make the breaking distance much SHORTER, especially in wet WEATHER conditions.” WHAT IS YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE LIKE WHEN THERE ISN’T ANY RACE? “Outside of racing it’s all about training. After breakfast I get on the bike, which takes up the bulk of my day. I always take a month off after the summer season. From mid-November onward it’s back to biking, although the winter season is not as intensive as spring or summer. It means I have a lot more time for other activities, such as watching football and going out to dinner with friends. You’ll never catch me in a pub at three in the morning, though.”
