STEAM ENGINE COMES TO LIFE AT CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE Children clapped and exclaimed with delight while along the fence cameras, phones and IPads were poised to capture photos and video footage of a unique part of Clermont’s history in action. The Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine had come to life again at the Clermont Historical Centre. The Clermont Historical Centre (CHC) invited the community to enjoy a morning of ‘Scones and Steam’ with free entry to the CHC, as part of the recent Gold and Coal Festival celebrations. Held on 21 August, the ‘Scones and Steam’ event attracted about 200 people, local and visitors alike. The ladies from the Country Women’s Association Clermont Branch provided a beautiful morning tea and they were kept busy as people lined up for a cuppa and deciding whether they would have a scone with butter, jam and cream or a small assortment of homemade slices.

Whether you chose a scone or the slices, the consensus was they were all delicious, and the CWA ladies had many return customers. Business was also brisk at the coffee van and the glazed donuts were a sell-out. Bush poet Margy McArdle entertained the crowd with her wit and recital of original bush poetry. But it was the Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine that was the star attraction. This event would not have been possible without Kevin Fry and Bob Kluck’s assistance and expertise with the steam engine. Kevin restored the Aveling and Porter #6803 engine to its current glory in 2016/2017 under the tutelage of Bob. All morning Kevin and Bob were kept busy stoking up the wood box to create the steam needed to drive the engine and ensured everything was smoothly running.

Continued... There were many questions asked by all ages and Kevin and Bob were happy to answer them all. At 12 noon, the moment had arrived for the steam engine to be driven out of its display area. With a very loud toot and black smoke wafting from the chimney, the steam engine was driven out of it’s display area and chugged around a large fenced off section of the car park. People were truly amazed as they watched Kev drive the engine and Bob kept shovelling wood and coal to fuel the firebox. Bob also delighted the crowd with toots of the engine’s whistle but a couple of hawks flying gracefully above were startled and momentarily off-balance. The chugging steam engine also drew the attention of passing traffic and a few vehicles pulled up to watch. After a couple of laps, Kevin and Bob stopped the steam engine and Bob spoke to the crowd about the engine and emphasised that the historical Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine belonged to the people of Clermont. For one long-term Clermont resident, Jim Crichton, there is a special connection between him and the Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine. Jim was part of the salvaging party that assisted the Clermont Rotary Club in bringing the Aveling and Porter steam engine back into town from Miclere in 1969. Rotarian Ernie Spring had previously owned the Aveling and Porter #6803 and used it in his sawmill that was situated in Lime Street. Ernie sold the steam engine to Tom Higgins and it was moved out to Tom’s gold mining claim at Miclere in 1948. Tom used the steam engine to power a stamper to crush rocks and extract the gold. The steam engine was retired from service after the Higgins mine was worked out. If wasn’t for the Clermont Rotary Club, the Aveling and Porter #6803 steam engine may have become a rusty relic. Clermont Rotarian, Brian Tidswell realised the historical value this engine had to Clermont as it had helped to rebuild a new Clermont township following the 1916 Flood.

Brian suggested to his fellow Rotarians that it would be a good Club project if the engine could be restored and displayed in Centenary Park. Tom Higgins was very happy to donate the steam engine to the people of Clermont as it deserved something better than being reduced to scrap metal. Tom had repeatedly refused offers for the steam engine from scrap metal merchants. The Clermont Rotary Club was faced with the challenge of getting the steam engine from Miclere to Clermont. The engine weighed 17 tons and at a site accessible only by a rough bush track. The Rotarians needn’t worry because Alistair Duncan and Jim Crichton worked out a plan over a beer at the Leo Hotel one Friday afternoon. The Leo Hotel was one of the buildings moved by steam engine after the 1916 Flood. Both Alistair and Jim, along with Jack and Bob Randall and Merv Ohl had been approached by the Rotary Club to assist the Club in bringing the steam engine home to Clermont. “Alistair Duncan and I were having a beer one Friday afternoon after work and I said the Rotary Club wants to bring the steam tractor in but they didn’t know how they would do it,” Jim said. “Alistair said he had to bring his Komatsu rubber-tyred dozer in for maintenance and said we’d get onto Jack Randall and load the Komatsu on to his semi, and we’d go to the Miclere turnoff from the Charters Towers road. “Then we’d unload the Komatsu, push up a descent (dirt) ramp and we’d drive in and hook on to it (the steam engine) and drive it out with the Komatsu.” So that was the plan – Alistair Duncan would pull the steam engine out of the scrub, Jack and Bob Randall would load it on the trailer, Jim Crichton would have his oxy-welding plant on standby and Merv Ohl would provide other equipment to make the salvaging of the old steam engine possible. When he saw the steam engine at Miclere, Jim said “it was in good condition but rusty”. “It needed painting, but it was all there,” he said. “It had just been left there. “The boiler had to be checked before it could be fired up.”
