CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE FROM THE PAST...PLACE YOUR BET ON THE ELEPHANTS

The elephants thundering down Capella Street had not escaped the circus or the attention of the people of Clermont. It was always an exciting time when a circus came to Clermont. The Big Top was set up on ‘The Flat’ next to the lagoon and the circus people didn’t mind curious crowds of people flocking to the circus outside of performances to see the exotic array of animals such as lions, monkeys and of course, elephants. When the Bullen Bros. Circus came to Clermont in August 1965, the circus partnered with the Clermont Apex Club for a very unique fundraiser – an elephant race! The circus provided five magnificent elephants and the jockeys were well-known local identities. The jockeys were Glen Bryan, Noel Massey, Sid Johnson, Bill Faint and Trevor Manning. It is unknown how much experience each jockey had of riding an elephant but a few of the jockeys may have had an advantage of being able to ride a horse. At 5pm on Tuesday, August 3, 1965, the jockeys and their huge mounts lined up at the starting line to race each other down Capella Street. Almost the total population of Clermont – 1,200 people gathered along the street to witness this bizarre event and cheer the jockeys and elephants along. Night Beat, ridden by Glen Bryan, crossed the finish line first with Elf Ant Pistol, ridden by Bill Faint, taking second place. Third place went to On Tap, ridden by Sid Johnson, Hot Rod, ridden by Noel Massey, was fourth and last to finish was Cure Em Qik, ridden by Trevor Manning. Following the Elephant Derby, the entire Clermont Apex Club gathered to take on an elephant in a tugof-war. The Apexians put in a mammoth effort but couldn’t match the strength of their opponent. The Elephant Race raised $50, which helped fund an Apex Club project of installing shelter sheds and barbecues on the northern side of the lagoon.

ON THIS DAY... 95 YEARS AGO Thursday, 17 September, 1936 Where Did the Chook Go? Back in the 1930s, sheep and wool production was a major industry in the Clermont district. Shearing teams often travelled from property to property to shear sheep, often working a contract with the station owner or manager. The flocks of sheep could number several thousands. When shearing was underway, it was a very busy time in the shearing shed as the sheep were shorn, the wool was skirted and classified before being bundled up and put in a bale bag. When there was enough wool in the bag, the bag was pressed in the wool pressure. It was important that the wool bales were not contaminated as this would affect the price of the wool. During the shearing season in September 1936 on one sheep and wool station in the Clermont district, a black Orpington hen sent the entire shearing shed in a flutter. The hen had a habit of laying in the wool press during slack times. On September 17, shearing was well underway, and several bales of wool had already been pressed when someone noticed the hen was missing. It was thought the hen was now in a pressed wool bale but which one? It was considered that too much time would be wasted in searching the wool bales for this chook so the hen may have gone off in the wool consignment to market. The chook’s fate was never known. ‘THEY’RE RACING!
