CLERMONT RAG FRIDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER 2021

FATHER’S DAY CHALLENGERS TACKLE THE MOUNTAIN Prams with bubs, blue dress-up outfits and inspiring athletes were a common sight in Middlemount on Father’s Day as dozens woke up early to scale the mountain. The Blue Mountain Bolt was a hill climb challenge for participants of all ages, as they ran, jogged or walked from the Middlemount Sportsground up to Blue Mountain Park and back. Isaac region Division 7 Councillor Jane Pickels said it was amazing to see the participants from all walks of life complete the 4.3km course, spanning from ages 7 to 79. “It is a true testament to the spirit of Isaac when so many people come together to tackle a challenge and succeed,” Cr Pickels said. “The beautiful view at the top of the Blue Mountain in the morning can also be a great incentive. “I was so proud to be a Middlemount resident as the buzzer went off and dad’s, mum’s, friends, grandparents and kids alike took to the track with vigour.” Mayor Anne Baker said the Blue Mountain

Bolt was the last activity in the three-day celebrations for Middlemount’s 40th anniversary. “Congratulations to the Middlemount community on reaching the Ruby jubilee. “We are region rich in resources, but we are also blessed with the greatest resource of all - our people,” Mayor Baker said. “We continue to show that our pure people power is helping our communities to thrive as we continue to help energise the world.” The Blue Mountain Bolt was presented in conjunction with Move It NQ. Cr Pickels said events like the Bolt help our communities to flourish. “We are so lucky to have such energetic communities and the people that make them amazing. “Congratulations to all the participants and winners on a fun and challenging achievement.”

EDGE-OF-THE-SEAT FOOTY GAME AMPLIFIES ISAAC’S COMMUNITY SPIRIT More than 3,500 footy fans witnessed a 26-24 nail-biting clash as the Team of NRL Legends pipped the Isaac Region All Stars at Darryl Bourke Oval in Moranbah last Saturday night (18 September 2021). The score line did not fully reflect the overall community pride with both teams producing heroic efforts to fight for the Ethan Stevens Memorial Trophy. “Our Isaac Regional Council was excited, beyond excited and proud to present the International Legends of League celebrations,” Mayor Anne Baker said. “One thing all our visiting guests learnt that in the Isaac region…. we work hard and play hard. “Our region is a community with a proud history, steeped in a diverse and active lifestyle. “Pure people power is the pillar for our communities and just like coal mining, rugby league is in our DNA. We breed them tough out here. “On behalf of Council, it was such an honour to have all former footy stars join us in our region

for the Ethan Stevens Memorial Trophy. “Thank you to the Stevens family - Michael, Kimberly and Jett. You’re always at the front of my mind and it was so incredible to share a very special moment with you all on Saturday. “Congratulations to the International Legends of League – thank you Troy Byers and Craig Teevans. “Thank you to our community volunteers at our local footy clubs. “And a special mention to the Queensland Government for their event support. “I would like to acknowledge all the sponsors for jumping on board with Legends of League as we all know a vast number of volunteers, business and community supporters made this a must-be regional event. “Thank you dedicating your time and effort to re-energising our communities.” The event is also proudly supported by Community Mental Wellness Partner, the Queensland Government.

PUBLIC NOTICES RATES DUE 27 OCTOBER – PAY EARLY AND RECEIVE A 10% DISCOUNT ON GENERAL RATES Keep an eye on your letterbox with rates notices set to arrive from Monday, 27 September 2021. Prompt payment of rates will secure a 10 per cent discount on general rates, if paid before Wednesday, 27 October 2021. The 10 per cent discount applies to general rates, and excludes all utility, special rates and charges, provided outstanding amounts and overdue rates and interest are paid in full by the due date. Ratepayers who have encountered delays with the postal service in their area can register their email address with Council for an additional rates notice to be issued electronically. If you have recently moved or changed your contact details, please check that you have informed Council to ensure delivery of rates notices on time. Council stood up last year in the face of COVID-19 uncertainty and froze rates and levies for residential and rural ratepayers while continuing to support the local economy through tough economic times.

Significant work has been done to keep the overall rates increase for 2021/22 to 2.4%, following on from the rates freeze for residential and rural properties last year. Council have reduced the cent in the dollar for general rates to offset some big increases to land values, in particular agricultural land values, as a result of Queensland Government land valuations. For more information about Land Valuations, visit https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/title/ valuation/about If you have not received your rates notice by Friday, 8 October 2021 please contact Council. Ratepayers can register their details for electronic notices by phoning 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227) and speaking to Council’s Rates Team, or emailing records@isaac.qld.gov.au between 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

READING IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN Did you know that reading has lots of benefits to your brain and mental health? If you are feeling stressed, find a comfy chair and immerse yourself in the pages of a novel. Reading helps reduce stress as it distracts your brain from stress and anxiety. Reading stimulates the brain and keeps your mind active. It also helps to improve your memory. Reading is a good way to expand your vocabulary and improve writing skills. It can also increase your knowledge. Do you love to read a good mystery and try to solve it as you read? You may not be aware that the book is helping you increase your analytical thinking skills. Reading helps you concentrate and focus, especially when there’s lots of characters in the books or you’re ‘time travelling’ between different centuries, decades and years. Books can bring about tranquillity, inner peace and calmness to the body. Best of all, reading improves your creativity and imagination. As you read, you can use your imagination and create pictures of the characters, the scenery and more.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT – LOUISE PENNY Canadian author Louise Penny didn’t start writing as a novelist until she was in her late 40’s. She took to writing mysteries after an 18-year career as a radio host and journalist with the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC). After leaving the CBC, Penny started writing a historical novel but found it difficult to finish so she switched to writing mystery books. Her first book, Still Life, was published in 2005 and won several awards. Penny’s most notable works are the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. Her latest book, The Madness of Crowds is a continuation of this series. In the Madness of Crowds, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is dubious when asked to provide crowd control at a statistics lecture to be given at Universite de l’Estrie in Quebec. Why has the head of homicide been asked to provide security at what seems like a minor lecture?

HOLIDAY FUN WITH SPHEROS

So next time you pick up a book to read, remember that reading is good for your brain.

The Clermont Library will hold another school holiday session with Spheros on Tuesday, 28 September.

NEW ARRIVALS

Children can come along and have fun playing with Spheros from 10am to 11am.

New books in adult fiction include: • The Magician by Colm Toibin • Viral by Robin Cook • The Joy and Light Bus Company by Alexander McCall Smith • The Madness of Crowds by Louise Penny • Complications by Danielle Steel

The session will be limited to four participants and bookings are essential. Children are welcome to visit the library during the school break but any child 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult. Until next time, stay safe and healthy, Sue, Mikaela, Robekah and Laura at the Clermont Library.

COMMUNITY NEWS THE HIGHS, THE LOWS AND THE BIG BLOWS The Clermont Work Camp has most certainly had their fair share of highs, lows and big blows. The last few rotations have been low in production with the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting and requiring prisoners to be either returned to the Correctional Facility or locked down for their safety. But the highs have seen the work camp deliver some big blows to some great community projects in Clermont in such times of upheaval.

Amongst our Community based jobs, the Work Camp continues to assist at the Clermont saleyards and Historical Centre providing extra sets of hands, whilst actively learning new skills and aiding in prisoners developing a sense of self-worth and confidence to take forward when gaining meaningful employment upon release.

The Clermont Kindy and Day care centre needed a port rack for school bags, so during lock downs the Prisoners set too and made a port rack perfect for the needs of the centre. The prisoners also spent their lockdown time refurbishing grandstands for the community Civic Centre. The August rotation saw some big blow moments with the completion of the Motor cross tyre wall and their toilet block, which look fantastic and fresh, and the Artslink pottery building was able to have their overgrown vegetation cleaned up which has given the building a clean and tidy new look. The Clermont Bears Rugby Club has had the opportunity to utilise the prisoners to paint the game lines for one of Clermont’s biggest rugby events Battle of the Mines and the normal seasonal games. Clermont Motor Cross Club

Queensland Corrective Services prides itself on being able to provide a labour source to the clubs and organisations of the communities in which they live. The work camp initiative is important in offering low-security prisoners the opportunity to make reparation to the community harmed by offending behaviours, whilst developing skills that will increase employment opportunities upon their release. Going forward, the Clermont Work camp will continue to deliver high quality work on all the little and big jobs that need doing to create and maintain amazing club and organisations spaces for the people of Clermont. If anyone has any projects or would like to discuss the opportunity to utilise the Clermont Work Camp, please feel free to contact Mim Allen, Community Liaison Officer on 0417 083 197.
