CLERMONT NURSE’S WAR SACRIFICE REMEMBERED THIS 11 NOVEMBER Little did a Clermont nurse and her soldier brother know a chance meeting during their First World War postings in France was going to be their very last. Sister Elsie Rose Grant was stationed at the Third Australian General Hospital in France in 1917 and one day while travelling by ambulance, out of the corner of her eye, she recognised her brother’s 40th Battalion colours.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said Sister Grant’s story and her nursing service in the Australian Army is to be remembered this 11 November.

She jumped out of the fast-travelling car and found her brother Second Lieutenant Allan Herbert Grant in excitement.

“She stated it was for private reasons, but arduous service had taken its toll. She requested and was recommended for the Reserve List of Nurses for Active Service Abroad.

He told her he would see her at his first chance. She waited but her brother never came. Ten days following their chance meeting, Allan was killed in action in Belgium on 12 October 1917 at 28 years old.

“Having served her country in the noblest of professions, for four years abroad, Sister Grant resigned from the sixth Australian General Hospital in the Australian Army Nursing Service in April 1919,” Mayor Baker said.

“For her services Sister Grant was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.”

Mayor Baker said this Remembrance Day, stories like Sister Grant and her personal and professional sacrifice will be at the front of our minds on 11 November. “Let’s join together in silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to mark the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of the First World War,” she said. “As proud Australians let’s pause in silence for a minute to reflect and to silently remember all those who served and died in war.” Sister Grant enlisted on 12 August 1915 and returned to Australia on 11 March 1918. She served in Egypt, France and England with the Australian Army Nursing Service. Returning to nursing in Australia, she held

several positions in the Central Highlands and was matron of several hospitals including Emerald before settling down in Springsure. Married with four young children, she was found dead in tragic circumstances near the family property in 1927, she was aged 37. Residents are encouraged across Isaac to gather at services in the region to honour the memory of the courageous men and women who have died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. The below services are being run by local groups: 10.45am at the Stone of Remembrance, Clermont Civic Centre Visit https://www.awm.gov.au/ commemoration/remembrance-day for more information about Remembrance Day.

PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises that due to falling branches from the flying fox colony in Centenary Park, Clermont, temporary fencing to isolate the area under the roost will be in place until further notice. Park users will continue to enjoy safe and unimpeded access to the majority of the park area and facilities except for the spaces excluded by the temporary fencing. The roost is away from residential backyards and split between the north western corner (corner of Drummond Street and Capricorn street) and in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets). Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost and will provide the community with updates once a course of action is established. Alternative access is available since majority of the park, including the shade structure and

toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure. Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community. Flying fox management needs to be undertaken in accordance with the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment and Science (DES) guidelines and codes of practice. Visit https://environment.des.qld.gov.au/ wildlife/animals/living-with/bats/flying-foxes/ roost-management#management_of_flying_ fox_roosts for more information. Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused. For more information visit https://www.isaac.qld. gov.au/flying-foxes or call Council’s Customer Service Centre available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227).

PUBLIC NOTICES 2021-22 FLYING FOX SEASON UPDATE #3, ISAAC REGION Isaac Regional Council is aware of, and is monitoring, flying foxes across the Isaac region especially in Moranbah, Clermont and Dysart. Flying foxes are protected wildlife in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, with some species classified as endangered. Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm flying foxes or disturb a roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community. CLERMONT A Little Red Flying Fox colony has established in Clermont as part of their yearly migration. The roost is on the north western corner (Ivan Bettridge Park) and south bank (Centenary Park) of Hoods Lagoon, away from residential backyards. Council is regularly monitoring the roost and has taken steps to minimise disturbance to delay the colony moving to the historical roost at Centenary Park or potentially into resident’s yards. Park users will continue to enjoy safe and unimpeded access to the majority of the park area and facilities except for the spaces excluded by the temporary fencing. PREVENTATIVE MEASURES Council officers have provided advice on flying fox colonies and the benefits of conducting

preventative measures with impacted residents. Trees with large dense canopies are attractive to flying foxes. Trimming or removing trees such as mangos, figs and Poinciana trees will help to avoid flying foxes being attracted to your property. However, flying foxes may establish a roost in any tree particularly those with a large dense canopy. STATEMENT OF MANAGEMENT INTENT Council has adopted a Statement of Management Intent to guide its management of flying foxes in the Isaac region. Since its adoption, Council has saved ratepayers over $750,000 in costs associated with management of flying fox roosts. Dispersal activities have no guarantee of success, and potentially spread flying foxes over a larger area or shift roosts from public lands into private backyards. Vegetation management activities of roost trees are capped at 10 per cent of the tree canopy, per annum, in accordance with the DES Code of Practice for low impact activities affecting flying-fox roosts. MIGRATION ACTIVITIES Flying foxes migrate into the Isaac region townships each year which is a part of its greater yearly migration across eastern Australia. It’s important to note that Australian flying foxes DO NOT carry COVID-19 following several enquiries made to Council this season. For more information visit https://www.isaac.qld. gov.au/flying-foxes or call Council’s Customer Service Centre available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227), or the Department of Environment and Science on 13 QGOV (13 74 62).

If you require further information please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227). Jeff Stewart-Harris Chief Executive Officer

DON’T SAY ‘NEIGH’ TO READING! With the arrival of November, there is one thing on the minds of many Australians – the Melbourne Cup.

It particularly focuses on the Twin Hills Races – our version of the Birdsville Cup!

Horses and the Melbourne Cup are synonymous.

The Clermont Historical Centre is open Wednesday to Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

Horses are beautiful animals with their own personalities, whether they are gentle and loving or a spirited rogue. A special bond can develop between a horse and a human. If you love horses, you can’t say ‘neigh’ to reading about them. Stabled on the shelves of Isaac Libraries are books about drovers and their horses, horseracing trainers, people who rode to national and international success and fame through buckjumping, eventing and show jumping with their horses and horses who went off to war and served alongside soldiers. Delve into poetry books by Australian poets like Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson and you’ll find there’s many poems on horses. Read about the bushrangers who pulled off daring feats on their trusted and sturdy mounts. For junior patrons, there are books about riding and caring for horses, different horse breeds and of course, unicorns. To get into Melbourne Cup fever, make tracks to the Clermont Historical Centre to view the ‘Back on Track’ exhibition. This exhibition showcases the history of race horses, trainers and clubs of the Clermont district.

Today, Project Gutenberg is an ongoing project to produce and distribute free electronic books. There are also books in languages other than English, including French, Hungarian, Italian, Finnish and Spanish.
