NATURE CENTER
The project started with a simple existing building composed of blank CMU walls set in a low valley. Our program was to repurpose the building as an education center. My objective was to design the interior as a space where the public can learn about nature. My design is focused on the following concepts: first, the project uses solar orientation to minimize heat gain, and second, the entry uses a clerestory to allow natural daylight into the design. The first floor plan is subdivided into the entry lobby, gallery space, and a lecture hall. The second floor contains the ranger’s office, gallery space, sitting space, and a bookstore.

STUDENT COMMUNITY CENTER
This project started out with an empty site on campus, where my objective was to respond to the current student lifestyle. My design is intended to expose students to the presence of the nature around the school. Enclosure exists only within the office spaces and sleeping areas, while all other spaces may be freely modified as needed. This makes the building very flexible and responsive to change. The building takes full advantage of passive environmental systems, including natural ventilation and light. The public spaces are located on the ground level, while private areas are on the upper floors.

MENIL BOOKSTORE AND COFFEE SHOP This project began with a prominent Houston couple commissioning a new design for the Menil bookstore, including a coffee bar with exterior and interior seating. The clients have obtained a site in front of the Menil Collection for the new bookstore, as they like the the urban and pedestrian qualities of the area. My design focuses on creating two main spaces that are open to the landscape.

URBAN ECOLOGY LAB
Located in the Downtown district of Houston, near the Buffalo Bayou, this education building is oriented to the constant movement of the bayou. The design utilizes exterior circulation to mirror the sense of movement on the water. The spaces then become shared, while maintaining a private character.

The project was to design an extension to the existing collection held by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The existing site was located near the Metro rail and Herman Park. As a result, the design was influenced by the high volume of pedestrian traffic in the area. The general plan is a composition of angled walls that not only serve as structural members for the building, but also define exhibit space. In order to allow for the exhibit spaces to run through the entire building with minimal interruption, the core is located at the back of the design.

BRISBANE DWELLING
In this project my assignment was to pick a location, look at the entire site and surrounding context, and develop a comprehensive program and design for a house. My plan calls for exposing the facade parallel to the street in order to frame the public spaces. Inside the house, all the spaces have visual connection to the courtyard. The private spaces lie within the slope of the site, enclosed by the mountainside, almost becoming part of the landscape. The living spaces are located closer to the street.

ENTRY PERSPECTIVE
CENTRE POMPIDOU MOBILE
The goal for this project was to create a traveling exhibition in the long tradition of temporary cultural buildings. The building is designed around the idea of framing space. The program is divided into three components: the exhibition, the public area, and the private area. The introduction to the exhibit space becomes the central courtyard which is framed by the traveling gallery on all sides. Both galleries are then framed by the public and private areas.

GULF COAST INITIATIVE DESIGN PROPOSAL
As a society, we spend a lot of time working and being preoccupied with technology and the world around us. The Gulf Coast Initiative introduces a new transition to give urban dwellers a chance to reconnect to the natural environment. My design is to create an Eco-Tourism Barge that transports people from Galveston to four different locations along the Intracoastal Waterway. Each destination has a set of activities that relate to the natural envirornment on the site. Each area also allows for overnight camping.

REVITALIZE
The goal of the project is to reclaim vacant space that has been abandoned over the years and introduce new program in the public and private sector which will create public spaces for the community and their children. Upon examining the site, one can identify and develop various hot spots to allow for better movement, interactions, and usage of the outdoors. The next step is to create pockets of destination to encourage outdoor activities and more human interaction between one another. Keeping in mind that you want to improve the overall human experience. By developing open design plans, giving it flexible use, this allows the community to program the space as they see fit. The idea was to support human ecology through habitable spaces.

The assignment for this project was to create an urban infill development with live-work studios on the street frontage and a larger house behind these studios. The owners could live in the house and rent out the studios. In an ideal situation, the tenants for the studios would be local artists and craftsmen who could use the downstairs as studio or gallery space while living above. The project includes five parking spaces in the back and two on-street.

OPEN-AIR MARKET
The Open-Air Market would consist of one support building, five container pads, and one food truck pad located alongside South Market Street just nort of SH-6. The containers would be leased out to local small businesses such as artists, craftsmen, and small scale food vendors. The support building would contain bathrooms, vending machines, an ATM, and storage for outdoor tables and chairs to be used in the market.

PEARL BAR
This assignment was a photo illustration to help the client visualize proposed changes to their building. The client wished to see what the building would look like after restoration work. This included redoing the wood paneling below the shop windows, adding exterior light fixtures, restoring historic transom windows, restoring the canopy to an art-deco type, and painting bricks light gray.
