Primo’s Donuts Donut Shop / Bakery Primo’s Donuts is a critically acclaimed family operated donut shop in Los Angeles, California. Looking to expand into new neighborhoods around LA, the owners sought after an iconic mid-century diner motif with modern refreshments. The interior concepts were developed for a specific space in Culver City; however, the inspiration of the baker’s process from kneed to frosting to boxing to eating is viable for any future location. The curvaceous wood floors, ceilings, and counters assimilate the forms of donuts. While the blue terrazzo floor and columns seem like sprinkled frosting dripping from the donuts onto the baby blue donut box walls. The human-sized donut bench near the storefront subtly draws pedestrians in, and is a marketing tool for social media crazed millennials to take selfies on as they eat one of America’s greatest donuts.

’As’ah

Coat Rack Comprised of two wooden sticks cast in naturally colored rammed earth, ‘As’ah interprets the timeline of drought in the American Southwest. One tree limb is from the Santa Monica Mountains, scorched by drought bushfires; while the other is a piece of sun and sea bleached drift wood washed ashore the Santa Barbara beaches after winter storms, marking the end of drought. The solid base, shoe rack, represents the resilient earth that withstands and endures the entire cycle. ‘As’ah is the Navajo word for long time, and in this context is representative of the lands perseverance through drought.

Electric Ave

Office Lofts Remodel Tucked just behind Abbot Kinney, Electric Ave Business Center is an existing office lofts. The property owner is seeking a face lift on the exterior and interior to draw in a new wave of tenants. A large portion of the existing structure is covered by secondary suspended metal grills, doubling as advertising space for each adjacent loft. Furthermore, jagged forms of metal grill distort the existing symmetrical buildings into asymmetrical silhouettes along the street elevation. Staying mindful of the existing materials, cladding over half of the existing cmu block walls with a charred oak wood is the final touch to the deconstructive renovation of the exterior. The interior renovation follows a simple logic, the plugged-in elements are to be finished in white oak hardwood (all elements other than the ground floor, structural walls, and roof ceiling). Subsequently, this creates a waterfall effect flowing from the second floor, over the balcony wall, down the stairs, and under to the ceiling of the ground floor.

Gesso

Pizza Restaurant Formerly Pitfire Pizza on Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, Gesso is an upscale spinoff of its predecessor. Bosting an industrial artist warehouse vibe, metal and glass control how much you see of what. The main dining area is separated from the entrance by a custom-built stain glass tunnel. Resembling the large gridded windows of an abandoned warehouse, the kitchen is silhouetted behind the bar by a translucent glass and metal wall. The walls of the restaurant are painted in gesso, depicting paintings truthfully with multiple stages of layering and shading. Stacked bottles in the wine room are visible through the negative space between colorful spools of thread, emphasizing the beauty of unit through superimposition. Original Pitfire Bar Photograph

‫~قيشر‬Rashiq TV Stand

A glimmer of Arabian gold catches the eye as a caravan of camels navigates over the curvaceous sand dunes of the Rub’ al Khali desert as heat refracts and dances to shapes unknown. Riding a white-grey camel with a royal purple saddle as though dyed by Phoenician but a day ago, a sheikh in the center of the caravan glances back smiling. The curves of his sun-drenched biceps summon for rest as his body gyrates with the long strides of his halting camel. As he dismounts the perfect outline of his rugged body becomes more evident. He turns and says in a modest tone, “For I am Rashiq, queen of this land.” **Rashiq, ‫( قيشر‬Arabic): curvaceous.

Garden Beer Gardens Australian Open Cocktail Furniture Garden Beer Gardens abstracts the marketing rebranding of Coopers beer, official sponsor of the Australian Open 2017 tennis tournament. Previously, Coopers was branded with an old-world-heritage-draft appeal. The cocktail-style furniture for the event juxtaposes warm traditional wood with modern plastered concrete and plastics. Planter boxes with succulents add a fresh-lively element. Bottle shape, assemblage, and storage were also incorporated into the concepts.

Mangrove Resort Hangzhou Resort & Façade Design Hangzhou is known for its rich cultural history and traditional teaism ideology. Translating the key features of the region into architectural design, two schemes for the resort hotel towers façade were simultaneously conceptualized. Various architectural styles, from common village homes to Imperial palaces, were analyzed in depth for the development of resort facilities. Traditional order and components were reinterpreted into a Chinese-contemporary design, allowing guests to feel as though their modern world has been transported back into the Song Dynasty.

Shanghai Uni Film & Art School Campus Expansion Film captures time. Art symbolizes time. Architecture inhabits time. Maintaining a dialogue as the university evolves with time, new buildings and open green space generate a fused campus environment. Similar to film strips weaving through a projector, new colleges bridging renovated existing structures together capture the mergence between the previous campus culture and the potential possibilities of the future.

Xixian New Area Urban Development Sited outside Xi’an, China, Xixian New Area is a diversely programmed planned city center. Design proposals for four separate iconic city blocks and a central median parkway were developed. The program functions of the buildings on each block include: commercial, office, mixed-use, and hotel. Furthermore, each city block has one high-rise tower making it the focal point of each parcel. Creating a commercial podium for the mid-rise and high-rise towers to rest on, the lower buildings contain various commercial activities. An all-weather glass arcade bisects the blocks and connects the main structures together. Furthermore, skybridges link parcel 1 with 4 and parcel 2 with 3. Similarly, a subterranean continuous corridor loop connects all four high-rise towers to one another. Open space, green roofs, street arcades, and tree-lined streets are other key urban strategies utilized.

Xixian GreenMall Urban Landscape 1 Xixian GreenMall is a central median parkway at the Xixian New Area urban development near Xi’an, China. Initially, the land was designated as open landscape with vegetation. Generating symbiotic activity with the adjacent urban program, the proposal segments the parkway into four civic zones: Sports Center, Animation Center, Amphitheatre, and Community Center. Submerged in a botanical2 garden, a subterranean commercial shopping mall and international food court connect to surrounding building sites via all-weather circulation corridors. Land formations resulting from earthquakes and landslides (i.e. faults, caverns, cliffs, and jagged ridges) inspired the concept for the site landscape and architecture. Theoretically, the land opened3 during such natural phenomenon allowing daylight and greenery to penetrate the subterranean space.

Chuanlord TreeHouse Zoo Park & Resort Part of a large-scale theme park development in Chenzhou, China, Chuanlord TreeHouse is a resort integrated with a zoo park on the Leishui River. Secluded on an island, guest must ride long-tail boats down narrow waterways to access the resort. The topography of the island is a constructed landform building mimicking the mountains and valleys along the riverbank. Circular pockets across the landform building open to contain exotic wildlife and aquatic exhibits. Behind the vertical glass curtain walls of the circular exhibits, commercial activities and public walkways view onto the animals below. Treehouses covered in vegetation grow and soar out of the landform hillside. Guest rooms and skywalks high-above allow private panoramic views of the Hunan landscape and zoo exhibits. Similarly, hanging along the steep cliffs a second typology of cliff house resorts provides an alternative viewpoint. Chuanlord TreeHouse merges modern luxury with natural wilderness.

Bata International Airport Airport Terminal Along the Atlantic coastline of Bata, Equatorial Guinea, Bata International Airport is the sole commercial airport of the new capital city. The biological form of the ceiba tree along with other symbols of Equatorial Guinea’s national identity inspired the concept. By studying gothic cathedral vault rips, a form was generated resembling the ceiba tree’s fanned branches. The vertical structural components symbolize the branches, while the roof symbolizes the canopy of leaves. Influenced by Spanish shapes and patterns, a field of diamond units roll across the roof structure; hexagonal glass curtain walls weave through the terminal interior. Mimicking sunlight beaming through the dense canopy of a ceiba forest, the diamond units randomly dissipate to multi-shaped skylights for daylight to penetrate the interior terminal and botanical gardens. The surrounding topographic landscape design of the airport shadows the terminal roof undulations. Approximately 2,400 m², the airport terminal serves over 1.26 million passengers annually.

Mount L’avion Wellness Center Polar

Located in the new development of Chaoyang Park, Beijing, Mount L’avion is a wellness center intended for wealthy VIP clientele. L’avion is a leader in Chinese medical tourism, sending clients to foreign facilities for treatments. Removing the hassle of international travel, the new state-of-the-art wellness center instead rotates a world-class medical staff. The program includes: spa center, restaurant, member lounge, product store, private waiting rooms, private consultation rooms, stem cell center, surgical treatment rooms, recovery rooms, dental clinic, hair-loss management clinic, gynecology clinic, andrology clinic, cosmetic surgery, and a gym facility. Testing the dialog between public and private, long winding corridors lead members on a seemingly secluded journey to private rooms. Inspired by the experience of ascending a mountain, each floor’s material palette mimics a different ecological biosphere on the journey to the summit.

Yuchuan Valley Resort Private Villa Resort Situated atop a hillside outside Lantian, China, Yuchuan Valley Resort is a vinicultural countryside escape. Submerged in Jade Valley Estate vineyards, each villa consists of several separate modular rooms connected by a central outdoor living space. Unifying the villas with their natural setting, the design utilizes local materials for the exterior and interior finishes. The combination of a modular system and local materials significantly reduces the carbon footprint and costs of the construction. Grape vines growing aside the entry steps, secluded scenic views, and private patios extending down into the vineyard facilitate a vinicultural experience.

Maria Residence

MARIA RESIDENCE MARIA RESIDENCE 2824 MONTCALM AVE. 2824 MONTCALM AVE.

Private Residence Interior Renovation Perched in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, Maria Residence interior renovation brings the outside inside. Initially, the project consisted of bringing clarity and design intuition to the installation of an aluminum base reveal. Around doors and along stairs, the reveal traces a path through the interior. Celebrating the threshold and detail resolving, a flat aluminum trim tracing the perimeter of the opening perpendicularly intersects and caps the reveal. Taking advantage of existing aligned hardwood floors throughout the entire house, hardwood boards were laid for the risers and runners of the steps to generate a waterfall landscape effect. Showcasing the design logic, hardwood flooring flows up, over, and down the main stairwell balcony. Other interior design solutions included: guestroom closet and entryway, kitchen cabinetry, three fireplaces, and outdoor living space balcony.

Unimount Agricultural Theme Park Conceptually designed for Jim Henson Studios, Unimount is an agricultural theme park located in Tianjin, China. The theme park unifies commercial activities, entertainment themes, and various residential typologies with a singular landform type, mountain. Mountains provide picturesque scenes to gaze upon and grand vistas from their elevated peaks; similarly, a well-design building is aesthetically pleasing and offers framed views onto its surroundings. The Unimount paradigm merges buildings as mountains with mountains as landforms, creating a new experience that is both natural and urban. Unimount combines three landform building types into one site: buildings with landscape, landscape with buildings, and buildings as landscape.

Guangzhou Science Museum Science Museum & Public Park Guangzhou Science Museum is part of an urban plan to develop a business, civic, cultural, and recreational city axis. The open green space of the site is equally as important as the built. Shifting each floor of the building allows for terraced green spaces and subsequently outdoor activities connecting to the surrounding green axis. Benefiting the development of a new museum paradigm in the later stages of concept, a detail analysis of museum circulation and program was conducted in order to understand the diverse program requirements.

Shady Stud Š Manufactured Light Fixture The translucent polycarbonate lampshade began as a flat transparent plane. Square pyramidal forms, studs, were CNC milled into the material. After several heat tests, the proper temperature and time was discovered to bend the material without changing its physical properties. A thin inner translucent polycarbonate shell diffuses the light before it penetrates the milled outer shell.

X Bench Reclaimed Seating & Storage Conceptualized on the eve of acquiring two wooden table legs and a tree house sign on fraternity row, X Bench is a combination of reclaimed and new materials designed for the privileged soroity girl. Primarily, the functionality concept is the storage of women’s heels and boots. While obtaining reclaimed pieces of wood, the design evolved from a functionality concept to a physical form. Design evolution implemented secondary functionality features including: make-up applica-

tion, self-admiration, cup holders, and purse hooks. The simplicity of coating the reclaimed pieces is complementary to the unapologetic hot pink new elements. The gold leaf accenting and gold mirror panels add a unifying element of privilege. X Bench contains all the function and aesthetic elements a sorority girl desires to assist with the realities of life.

Rock ‘N’ Rack City of Palm Springs Bicycle Rack Long before the Palm Springs Art Museum existed, the vast desert landscape of the surrounding area was peppered with desert rocks and softscape. As civilization intrudes, some of the rocks still remain despite the world’s continuous evolution. This particular rock, impressed by the City of Palm Springs’ environmental awareness, decided to contribute to the City’s progress by performing as a bicycle rack. Simultaneously, the rock reminds visitors of the natural desert biome beyond the City limits. The rock’s selfless sacrifice to the community exemplifies a tranquil coexistence of the natural and the developed.
