What is Old Style? A Brief Introduction

3

T

he Renaissance typographers developed the ‘Old Style’ type style in order to replace the type style, ‘Blackletter’. This particular type style began in the 15th century and continued to the mid 18th century. Even though many of these typefaces were 300 to 600 years ago, they are still very classic typefaces are still used in today’s modern era. The characteristics of Old Style typefaces are: A low contrast between thick and thin strokes, bracketed serifs and left leaning axis or stress. There are two subcategories within this type style which are Venetian Old Style and Garalde Old Style. Venetian typefaces began the Old Style type styles. Their characteristics were an obvious diagonal stress and slanted bar on the lowercase ‘e’. An example typeface of the Veneian style is Centaur. Depending on the classification system, Venetian was occasionally it’s own type style. Garalde typefaces appeared inbetween the fazing out of

Venetian type styles and before Modern type styles. Their characteristics were a horizontal bar on the lowercase ‘e’, a slight less diagonal stress than Venetian styles and more contrast between thick and thin strokes. An example of Garalde styles are Garamond, Goudy Old Style, Century Old Style, Palatino and Sabon. Within this type style, sometimes typefaces were furtherly categories by country of origin.

Ff 5 Adobe Caslon Pro

The Typeface ‘Caslon’ was originally created by William Caslon in between the years of 1720 and 1726. Caslon used Old Style Serif type design to create ‘Caslon’ and he handwrote the design using pen. The destinctive design of ‘Caslon’ is characterised by the cropped apex of the ‘A’, a high, horizontal crossbar of the ‘e’, the ‘C’ has a double serif, the italicised ‘A’, ‘V’ and ‘W’ appear to fall over, the bowl curve of the itallic ‘p’ overlaps he stem, there are long serifs on the middle arm of the ‘E’, there is a long arm on the ‘L’, the bottom arm of the ‘Z’ is longer, the narrow ‘c’ has a low stress, there is a large loop on the ‘k’ and the ‘T’ has long serifs tapering out from long arms, which lower at the center.

This digital-only version of ‘Caslon’ was designed by Carol Twombly in 1990. Her designs were based off the specimen sheets of ‘Caslon’ between the years of 1734 and 1770. This typeface is a part of the Adobe Originals programme.

Ff 5 Adobe Garamond Pro The Typeface ‘Garamond’ was originally created by Claude Garamond in between the years of 1530 and 1533. Garamond used Old Style Serif type design to create ‘Garamond’ and he handwrote the design using pen, but with a bit more structure.

The destinctive design of ‘Garamond’ is characterised by the apertures that are smaller than average and close off earlier at the ends, they contain a low line contrast, the serifs have slightly cupped bases, the serifd found on top of a character slope downwards, the terminals are reminiscent of hand caligraphy strokes, the serifs are heavily bracketed, the serifs are rounded at the ends, all of the stresses are diagonal, the x-height is improved it’s readibility by beaing higher and there is a large difference between the cap and descender, there are no apexes but others in counters and it’s italic family do not contain typical serifs.

This digital-only version of ‘Garamond’ was designed by Robert Slimbach in 1989. It is the most popular ‘Garamond’ used in print. This typeface is a part of the Adobe Originals programme.

The name ‘Minion’ comes from the traditional meaning ‘sizes’. Minion Pro was intented for use as body text, as it is classic, netural and practical, whilst also being slightly condensed. Minion Pro is commonly known to have large font familys, especially in different languages. It’s well known to be used in print media and famously presented in the book, The Elements of Typographic Style, by Robert Bringhurst.

Rationale

18

I chose the type style, ‘Old Style’, specifically because it is a very classic style and many of the typefaces in this style have been around for many years. I find it interesting when researching about different ‘Old Style’ serif typefaces, because most of them look similar, but are yet different. I also enjoyed learning about each typgrapher who designed each typeface within this type style; they all had different purposes as to why they designed the particular typeface.
