ABOUT ME My name is Isabella Hoyos and I was Born in Cali, Colombia and now I call Miami my home. I have always had a passion for design and I finds inspiration in all things surrounding me. I came to this country to pursue a bachelor degree and I started with an Architecture Associates in Arts degree from Miami Dade College but my desire to constantly cultivating my passion for design, took me to get a Masters of Interior Architecture at Florida International University (FIU). I’m currently on the end of my first year at FIU and it’s has been amazing and intense since the beginning. I have also been working in a small Interior design firm since 2014 and although it has been a great experience it is very difficult while studying full time but my passion for design is what motivates me everyday and keeps me moving forward.

I love to travel and hopefully I could know all the places around the world but also I would love to live in Europe some day. My ultimate professional goal is to design furniture pieces and have my own firm and store. My parent are my biggest inspiration. All I am I owe it to my parents. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from them since the beginning.

I believe that life should be enjoyed to the fullest each day, yet a life without design would make this impossible. I will define myself as a color defender and also a music lover.

This module was targeting to research an Architect and how color it is use through the design. We analyze the architect’s back background and history and also the building itself. This was my first time knowing about the Architect David Adjaye Obe and his work. This was an interesting learning as he coming has an influence from many cultures as I can relate myself as being born and raise in different cultures.

Interstellar

This was an interesting approach to the movie because not only I got to see it again (Is my favorite movie) but I could understand and analyze the use of color the director choose in order to make scenes more interesting. I love to watch movies and after this assignment I will definitely analyze all of the color palette the movies have and how the director could add or improve the use of color.

10

Synopsis: Interstellar is a 2014 epic science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan. With our time on Earth coming to an end, Professor Brand, a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind's new home. Observation /Reflection: The film begins by establishing at his own rhythm its ambitions: men overexploited land resources, which is why the only goal they have left is to survive. All of this is brilliantly illustrated in a very simple directing choice, which from my point of view is the decisive impetus of the film. At the end of the film you can’t just ignore that humans are over exploding our resources and that this is a movie but it can be a reality in a not to distant future. This sci-fi epic movie wasn't to ponder the philosophical questions that accompanied the story, but to make art, and art is was, and is. Whilst the subject may be hard to comprehend at times, it can't be denied how visually monumental and thoughtful Christopher Nolan's science fiction masterpiece is, and can easily be named the best film for me and possibly one of the greatest science fiction films to have ever graced the screen. Color Usage: The basic color scheme of the space-travel segments is white and silver-gray on black and in the planets you can add the blue-gray color. This colors will add suspense to the plot of the movie and will keep you engage. Also this colors will reflect as how we see the space and it can relates to technology.

SCENE ANALYSIS This scenes represent what was left of earth in 2065 when crop blight has caused civilization to regress into a failing agrarian society. Cooper, a widowed former pilot, runs this corn farms (that you can see on the pictures) along with his father-in-law, son and young daughter, Murphy. In this pictures there are 3 predominant colors which is the beginning(first picture) of the movie and represents life, nature and energy while they are still on earth but still years later (bottom picture) they are still in the same agrarian society that are represented in the same colors. DARK GREEN

The color of life, renewal, nature, and energy, is associated with meanings of growth, harmony, freshness, safety, fertility, and environment.

DARK BEIGE –LIGHT BROWN

The color of earth and is abundant in nature. It implies genuineness but can also be sad and wistful.

DARK BROWN

Similar to wood or leather, it also is the color of earth. Anxiety Sadness

SCENE ANALYSIS Low on fuel, Endurance can only visit one more planet before returning to Earth. The planet they decided to visit is covered by large frozen ammonia clouds, but Mann assures the team that the surface underneath is habitable. However, during the expedition, he turns on Cooper, cracking the latter's visor and revealing that his data was a sham so he could get rescued. This scene represent nor bright color keeping suspense through the movie. Also compared to last page where there where earth color that represent life on the opposite this are color that represent no life, no nature but still with hope. GREY + BLUE

Creates expectations. Intellect, knowledge, and wisdom Conservative. Renewal.

LIGHT GREY

Cool, neutral. Often associated with loss or depression. Lacks energy No life.

COLOR + BALANCE RENDERING

This was one of my favorite assignment of all the semester. Rendering is one of my passions as you can play with patterns, colors, and make a space become real as you visualize it. In this case we had to choose a color pallete and use the rule of 60% , 30% and 10% were the colors are use in that percentage.

14

COLOR + BALANCE RENDERING I choose this color palette based in complentary colors of the color wheel. The purpose of this palette was to create a fun and balanced environment.

DOMINANT

SECONDARY

60% is yellow to create a platform for the rest of the colors to stand out maintaining a light feel. 30% is grey to add texture and to add asymmetrical balance to the 10% accent green/brown. This allows a balance between colors and making the space visually pleasing.

COLOR + EMPHASIS

In this opportunity, the assignment was to analyze a retail store and in this case I choose one of my favorite retails store not only for its products but the design concept behind everything. I'm going to explain why the designer choose the lighting they choose, the design and the furniture they are using.

•FORMERLY KNOWN AS ALLSAINTS SPITALFIELDS. •NAMED AFTER A FAMOUS LONDON STREET (ALL SAINTS ROAD IN NOTTING HILL).

•BRITISH FASHION RETAILER HEADQUARTERED IN SPITALFIELDS, LONDON, UK. •SELLS MENSWEAR, WOMENSWEAR, FOOTWEAR, AND ACCESSORIES • 35 DEPARTMENT STORES AND 65 STAND-ALONE STORES ACROSS THE UK, EUROPE, CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES. •AESTHETICALLY, ALLSAINTS IS KNOWN FOR OFFERING SHARP EDGE, DIRECTIONAL CLOTHING WITH A MUTED PALETTE DOMINATED BY BLACKS, BROWNS, WHITES, AND GRAYS.

18

THE CONTRAST OF HUE IS USED IN THE MERCHANDISE AND THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS THROUGH OUT THE SPACE AND HOW IT IS DISPLAYED. HAVING SELECTED MERCHANDISE, EVERY ITEM IS STRATEGICALLY PLACED IN THE STORE, AND THIS ALLOWS CLIENTS TO GET ATTRACTED TO THE PRODUCT BY IT VIBRANT COLORS.

19

THE STORE USES DIFFERENT CONTRAST OF VALUES THROUGH LIGHT TO EMPHASIZE THE MERCHANDISE. EVEN THOUGH THE PLACE IS VERY ILLUMINTAED, WE CAN APPRECIATE BETTER THE MERCHANDISE BY FOCAL LIGHTING TO THE ITEMS OF THE RETAIL.

20

A WALL OF SEWING MACHINES BEHIND THE GLASS STOREFRONT AT LINCOLN ROAD GREETS PASSERSBY ON THIS WELL-KNOWN MIAMI STREET. LATER I LEARNED MANY OF THESE MACHINES WERE SHIPPED IN FROM THE UK, SOME WITH NOTES TUCKED INSIDE FROM THEIR PREVIOUS OWNERS. ONE FORMER OWNER WROTE, “PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY OLD SINGER.” YOU CAN APPRECIATE THIS SEWING MACHINES IN ALL THE STORE EVEN TO HANG THE CLOTHING. NO MANNEQUINS, FRESH COLOR, NOR OBVIOUS MESSAGING. THE STREET SIDE PRESENTATION WAS A CODE WHOSE TRANSLATION COULD BE ACCOMPLISHED ONLY BY GOING BEHIND THE GLASS, SEEING WHAT WAS THERE AND WHAT IT MEANT.

21

WE CAN APPRECIATE CONTRAST OF TEXTURES IN THE ENTIRE PLACE, SPECIALLY IN FLOORS AND WALLS. THEY USE WOOD FLOORING, TILES AND CONCRETE IN THE WALLS. STILL HAVING NEUTRAL COLORS SO IT DOESN'T TAKES ATTENTION FROM THE MAIN ITEMS.

22

THE FOCAL POINT FOR THIS STORE ARE DEFINITELY THE SEWING MACHINES THAT CONNECTS THE INDUSTRIAL INTERIOR DESIGN WITH THE ITEMS SOLD IN THIS STORE. IT CATCHES YOUR ATTENTION AND INVITES YOU TO VISIT THE STORE SINCE THE MOMENT YOU ARE OUTSIDE OF THE STORE. MORE THAN 60% OF THE STORE'S FIXTURES ARE RECLAIMED ARTIFACTS, AND THE REST ARE ALL CAST-IRON PIECES PRODUCED IN THE "TRADITIONAL SAND-CASTING METHOD,". IN-STORE THERE ARE 1,100 SEWING MACHINES—A SIGNATURE DETAIL THAT'S IN ALL THE AMERICAN ALLSAINTS LOCATIONS.

Discussion

Details Furniture, wall paper.

Set on the stunning waterfront of Biscayne Bay, Mondrian South Beach captures all the heat, intensity, energy and vibe of the original Mondrian in Los Angeles. Revolutionary Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ whimsical and visionary style for the hotel is an homage to “Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.” In the rooms, there are floor-to-ceiling windows that offer spectacular views of the Bay, while the eye is drawn to all the pattern going on. The main color palette for this particular room is white, black and yellow. The neutrals in floor and ceiling is dominant with 60%, white tones about 30% black and yellow is the accent within a 10%. Color and line can be appreciated in all the areas of the space, but the most noticeable feature that exemplifies this condition are the different patterns going on in the room. This patterns provide drama to the space, which translate into an interesting and lively composition. Color and shape is exemplified by the placement of the big rectangular wall frame to hold the TV and the different wall papers. This black frame defines and unifies the different design.

Line

Shape

Color and texture refers to the visual and tactile quality of the finishes used within a space, which for this particular case it is exemplified by the Kartell furniture pieces for the balcony which brings an interesting approach to the interior design.

Color and pattern is the main attraction in the rooms as there is pattern everywhere. It occurs in repetitive arrangement of shapes with the combination of color and texture through out.

Discussion

Details Furniture, wall paper.

Chic and dramatic living spaces are furnished with original bespoke pieces, including iconic items such as the carved chairs, milled tables, vine cabanas and the signature floating staircase. Black and gold patterned furnishings and oversized brass bell shaped lights. White is used 60%, black 30% and gold 10%. Color and line can be seen in all areas as the pattern represents the movements of the design. You can see this in the floor and in the stairs as well. Color and shape is exemplified by the placement of the the masterpiece of the room–an iconic, signature “floating staircase.”. This stairs is the piece that completes the puzzle, giving drama and caught all the attention in the room.

Color + Culture Colombia + Turkey

It’s always makes me happy to talk about my home country, Colombia because I’m absolutely in love with every part of it but sharing it with other’s is the best part of all. Colombia My country is COLOMBIA and I was born in Cali. I’m not only passionate about my country because it is consider the “Happiest place on earth” but also it has the most magical places to visit. Once you visit my country you will have the feeling that you don’t want to leave. Our people are always in the street celebrating for anything and having conversations with anyone that crosses their path. Not only our life's are colorful but our environment. Starting with our color for our flags: Yellow, blue and red. Yellow represents our richness, the gold and the people that creates this paradise. Blue represent the ocean as we are the only country in South America to border both the Pacific and the Caribbean Ocean. Finally, the red of our flag represents the blood shed by the heroes of Independence. An interesting fact is that back when my country was just founded it was called “Nueva Granada” and it consisted of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador but after the years they all separated and became independent Republics. This is why the 3 countries have the same color flag but with different symbols that represent each country. Despite our four-decade-long civil war and reputation for violence, it has change finally with improved security conditions have led to a sharp increase in tourism. Foreigners and even us are able to explore this paradise of cloud forested mountains, palm-fringed beaches and gorgeous colonial cities., Colombia offers a huge range of ecosystems, from the Amazon rainforest near Leticia to the snowcapped mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the tropical islands of San Andrés and Providencia. It is a place that has to be on anyone’s bucket list.

Turkey Turkey is located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey is bordered with Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Iran and Azerbaijani. This country is influenced by every extreme of Eastern and Western culture. I’m really interested in not only visiting this country but to learn about it and that’s why I choose this marvelous country.

This country is full of culture and are known for there landscape and architecture. The red in their flag represent power and luck and it is used constantly. Agatha Sophia is the most famous Turkish architecture piece not only because of it’s beauty but because it represent the transition from the Roman World into christianism by Emperor Constantine. This building shows power and leadership back then and nowadays it hasn’t change.

CONCLUSION

This class was beyond expectations. First of all the text book is a fun visual book that will not get you bored as you read but instead it has amazing pictures to share and even to have as a piece of art. I loved the part of analyzing color in our daily lives. I had never stop and analyze why we have color around us and how it makes us feel but since the first assignment for example the one from the movie was an eye opener due to the fact that the colors will affect your state of mind and make you feel in a certain way. I have always love color and I use it way to much but with the rule of 60%,30%,10% I have learn to neutralizing it a little better in my design.

Overall, this was a fun interesting class that makes assignment very interesting and fun to do. I think is should be always a required class for all designers as color is a very important matter for us and even for our lives. In conclusion, I am very happy I could learn everything from this class and use it from now on into my daily life and design.
