Botanical reseach is the study of anything relating to plants. This may include spaces for work, research and observation. With need for varying spaces for related tasks, connection becomes a necessity. A dialogue between circulation and program creates a cohesive designation of space. By a central passageway, those dedicated to research and those observing the work of these become connected to multiple varying spaces. Occupants have the ability to engage with the entirity of the structure by way of a central ramp system. The void that encases this transitional element creates a sense of encloser and mystery in way-finding.

Layered porcelain tiles become as vertebrae along structural and tubular pieces that act as a spinal cord. The system’s movement is contingent upon the temperature in a space. Tiles move horizontally and vertically to modify it’s density and shape to heat or regulate temperature. In a extremely cool environment, tiles are heated by hot water that travels through the internal tubular pieces. The interlocking tiles form a system that becomes a heating and regulating membrane.
