This zine is dedicated to spirits of survivors and victims of un/natural disaster, senseless violence and war of any kind, for any reason, any where. This zine is made in honor of those who seek to help and heal in times of crisis, loss and displacement. This zine was made in honor of the ancestors that got us here. Remember, we are their wildest dreams. This zine is grateful to Mother Earth and the trees that helped make it a reality for you to hold in your hand in this moment.

THE ESCAPE ARTIST INITIATIVE (EAI) is a public awareness and eco-activism

campaign focused on building community readiness and resilience through the arts, popular culture and D.I.Y media. The EAI offers an artist-led, community-centered response to issues of public safety and existential concern that threaten the minds, bodies and spirits of black and brown folks and fellow human beings of the planet.

WHAT IS AN ESCAPE ARTIST?

An escape artist employs creative strategies and design solutions to overcome, escape or otherwise liberate oneself and one’s community from various systems of violence and injustice. Escape artists aim to uproot dysfunctional realities from their mythic bedrock to set the imagination free. We use myth and image, radical worldbuilding and innovative design to plant seeds of hope and survival in the collective consciousness of communities who seek to co-create a better, more sustainable world. Escape artists are change agents and way finders driven to illuminate paths to new ways of seeing and manifest the destiny of our own mind’s eye.

S.O.S. STRATEG SAVE OUR SKIN What does PERSONAL SAFETY and PHYSICAL SURVIVAL mean in the 21st CENTURY? • What are the biggest PHYSICAL THREATS to FLESH AND BONE? • IF FUTURE SURVIVAL meant life without a HUMAN BODY, how might that CHANGE your PERSONAL IDENTITY and REDEFINE what it means TO BE HUMAN? • Do you think this would make humanity STRONGER OR WEAKER as a species?

SAVE OUR SEEDS How do we TEACH THE YOUTH to PROTECT themselves from life’s OLD AND NEW THREATS? • What MYTHS can we create to inspire the SURVIVAL of the NEXT GENERATION and the REBIRTH of a NEW WORLD of their OWN DESIGN? • If you could only SAVE 3 SEEDS from this world for FUTURE FARMING in the next (i.e. off world colonies) which SEEDS would they be and why?

GY SAVE OUR SOULS What does SOUL mean to YOU in the context of LIFE and SURVIVAL? • IMAGE and ARCHETYPE are the LANGUAGE of the PSYCHE/SOUL and the essential constructs of MYTH, DREAM, and REALITY. If we are what we eat as CONSUMERS of MASS MEDIA CULTURE, do IMAGES (MEMES, HASHTAGS, etc.) of THE FEED shape PSYCHE/SOUL and possibly our COLLECTIVE DESTINY? • What IMAGES/VISIONS come to mind that symbolize/ project LIGHT, POWER, LOVE, HOPE, POSSIBILITY, PEACE, TRANSCENDENCE, REBIRTH, LIBERATION for the PSYCHE/SOULS of BLACK/BROWN and INDIGENOUS FOLK in the FUTURE?

3 DAYS WITHOUT WATER* 3 WEEKS WITHOUT FOOD 3 HOURS WITHOUT SHELTER 3 DAYS WITHOUT SLEEP *3 DAYS WATER SUPPLY (1 GALLON WATER PER PERSON/DAY)

(SELF) CHECK POINt FOOD

• Do you have emergency food supply on reserve? If so, how much? • How long would it last you? • Do you know how to grow your own food? If not, do you know others that do? • Would you know how to identify edible wild plants indigenous to your residential region? • Could you identify plants that are medicinal? Poisonous? • Consider your personal/family/community policy around sharing basic resources like food rations. Do you know where you stand on this issue in an emergency situation?

WATER • How do you take your water? • Do you drink tap water? Still/Purified? Spring? Mineral? Alkaline? Free? Any way you can get it? • How much water (emergency supply) do you have stored? • What are the fresh water sources in your area? • How would you source water if you couldn’t buy it? • What are some of the ways you can purify water for drinking?

SHELTER • Do you have an emergency escape plan for your home? • Do you have a safe space/emergency recovery location outside your house? Your neighborhood? State? Country? Planet? • Could you create a make-shift shelter to survive if you had to? • Do you know how to quarantine a room DIY style?

score:

SHELTERING IN PLACE • If local officials tell you to “stay put,” act quickly. Listen carefully to local radio or television stations for instructions, because the exact directions will depend on the emergency situation. In general you should: • Get inside. Bring your loved ones, your emergency supplies, and when possible, your pets. • Find a safe spot in this location. The exact spot will depend on the

type of emergency.

• Stay put in this location until officials say that it is safe to leave.

SEALING A ROOM • In some types of emergencies, you will need to stop outside air

from coming in. If officials tell you to “seal the room,” you need to: • Turn off things that move air, like fans and air conditioners. • Get yourself and your loved ones inside the room. • Bring your emergency supplies if they are clean and easy to get to • Block air from entering the room. • Listen to officials for further instructions. • Once officials say the emergency is over, turn on fans and other things that circulate air. Everyone should go outside until the building’s air has been exchanged with the now clean outdoor air.

FINAL TRANSMISSION Have you ever thought of what your last words would be to loved ones, to the world? Who would you call if you had the time? Would you use limited words to express love and gratitude? Or maybe share your greatest joy OR your deepest regret? Would you send a final message to someone special or make a last request? Or maybe you might leave behind a beautiful memory to echo your spirit into peaceful eternity every time it’s remembered‌

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-Beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” -Roy Batty, Blade Runner
