Pebble tile history
>
In the early 1990s, Island Stone’s founders invented the first mesh-backed pebble tile in Indonesia. Pebble tile was the result of their efforts to bring a look to the world of design inspired by one of the most beautiful locales on Earth and a culture renowned for its exotic craftsmanship. After successfully debuting in Australia, pebble tile received a celebrated introduction in the United States, initiating what today has become an acclaimed design approach worldwide.
Pebble tile today >
With their continued growth and recognition as a unique design tool, pebble tiles are available in a wide range of stones, formats and designs. Each unique approach offers a distinct look individually appropriate for projects of any size or scope.

Island Stone quality >
The quality of the original tile is critical to the successful completion of a pebble tile installation. Specifically, a premier pebble tile must have the following qualities:
>
Sliced backs > Through careful sorting and slicing of the irregular surfaces of each pebble, we create a specific thickness for a tile with an even surface.
>
Stone quality > The origin of a pebble defines the material quality. Island Stone tests pebbles for strength and reliability. We stand behind all our products and have a long history of successful installations to guarantee the quality.
>
Hand placement of pebbles > The hand placement of each pebble by premier craftsmen in the industry, ensures the tightest weave possible resulting in a finished surface showing minimal grout.
>
>
Premier pebbles > The careful collection and sorting of pebbles is essential to ensuring a premium pebble tile design has the consistent hue and shape that make it distinct.
Premier mesh and glue > Quality mesh and glue make for easy and strong installation that is completely hidden in the final project.
>
Exceptional interlock > A good interlock ensures a seamless surface with no visible beginning or end to an individual tile.
Island Stone’s stricter standards protect you >
Unknown pebble types from unknown companies often lead to unexpected results with no recourse if not up to desired standards.
>
Poor collection and sorting result in mismatched tiles with a degraded appearance.
>
Irregular pebbles without a sliced surface result in an uneven tile with degraded surface quality and appearance.
>
Loose weaves result in large spaces between pebbles that fill with
grout resulting in harder and costly installation and poorer final appearance. >
Too little glue and pebbles fall off before being placed. Too much and the bottom surface never achieves a strong bond and may become loose after installation.
>
No interlocking or a poor interlocking pattern can result in an undesirable grid appearance in the final installation.

Installation >
Labor costs and additional materials are important considerations in a tile project. The installation of Island Stone pebble tiles is quick, easy and can be done by either a professional tile installer or experienced DIY’ers. The distinct differences in how we manufacture our tiles ensures that installers can achieve a permanent, desirable appearance and premier quality with an even surface.
Without Island Stone’s quality controls, installation is significantly more difficult and drawn out, resulting in added costs and a less even grout level. This irregularity in grout level adversely effects the evenness of the surface, making the surface harder to clean and susceptible to damage, potentially leading to loosening of individual stones.
Pebble design >
What began as a single product has blossomed into a diverse design tool with pebble tile formats uniquely developed to create original surfaces with different personalities. Here are some of the major attributes to consider when choosing a pebble tile for a project:
>
Pebble sizes Consider the size of a project and desired affect you want. The smaller the pebble, the more pebbles per square foot. Often larger scale areas benefit from a larger pebble size. (See Petite Pebble (small), Perfect Pebble (medium), King Pebble (large)).
>
Mixing sizes and stones Select pebble tiles offer multiple stone types and sizes. These blends can be used to tie a project’s color pallet together or to simply bring a distinctive appearance to a design. (See Celestial Pebble, Perfect Pebble, King Pebble).
>
Tile formats Careful adjustments to pebble placement and their varying shapes, creates distinctive looks like the geometrical, clean lines of Absolute Pebble. Choosing unique cuts can create dramatically different appearance such as Strip Pebble and Stacked Pebble.
>
Surface Rougher surfaces, available in selected stones and formats, creates a rugged appearance often desired in larger scale installations or for outdoor environments (See Bali Pebble, Alpine (pz)).
