Las Fallas They are parties that are celebrated from March 15 to 19. They are celebrated in Valencia. According to Francisco Almela i Vives, the Fallas are "ephemeral catafalques with figures that are raised in the City of Valencia to be burned for the feast of San José". They have character of current affairs. The faults usually consist of a central figure or composition several meters high, the largest exceeding 30 m, surrounded by numerous cardboard, plasticine, stone, and polyurethane figures, supported by a wooden frame. The act in which the falla is burned is called the cremà (the burning) and it takes place on March 19, the day of San José (Sant Josep), the patron saint of the falleras festivities.

LAS FALLAS By Celia M. Las Fallas de Valencia are festivities that are celebrated in Valencia, Spain the 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 of march. It’s origin came from an old tradition in which some carpenters of the city used to burn in front of their work shops, streets and public squares the old and useless junk along with the wooden gadgets they used to raise the lamps that illuminated them while they worked in the winter months the night before the feast of their patron, Saint Joseph. For this reason, the day of the cremà (when the Fallas’ monuments burn) always coincides with the 19th, the Feast of Saint Joseph. Today we still burning the monuments, but this is preceded by a fireworks display, lit by the Fallera Mayor and the President of the Commission of Valencia.

“Las Fallas” Valencia is the capital city of Comunidad Valenciana, placed in the east of Spain, on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Valencia is the third largest city of Spain, it has got about 800,000 inhabitants, but its population becomes double during the celebration of Las Fallas. The festival begins on March 1 and ends on March 19. Every day at 2:00 pm, in the Town Hall Square, thousands of thunderous firecrackers are thrown during ten minutes. This is called “La Mascletá”. On March 15 more than 700 ninots are placed in the city. Some are so big that cranes are needed to move them. Ninots are huge statues made of paper, cardboard, wood or white cork. They are very realistic, and represent current events or satirical scenes. During five days, people can see the ninots and decide which one they prefer. The ninots are burned on March 19, a day known as “La Cremà”. Each year, one of them is saved from fire by popular vote. People can visit the forgiven ninots in the Local Museum of Fallas. During these days Valencia is very lively, the streets are full of people and there are many different activities to enjoy: bullfights, concerts, parades, paella contests, floral offerings…
