A PROPOSAL BY:

URBAN DIORAMA PROPOSAL

Our proposed mobile library aims to work as a democratisation tool, which carries art, knowledge and culture, furthermore it is envisioned as a tool to access public services like a FIREFLY illuminating its way everywhere it goes. It is envisioned as a sustainable and cheap way to access multiple communities across Sudan. Using a bicycle and a carriage, an abundant base in the country, as the structure for the design, steel cables sustain the clover that becomes the roof ,which shield its users from the sun and rain; and that when down becomes a box, which protects the precious knowledge it keeps. Tables unfold to the sides as lower wings where the avid reader can rest and depart to the world that his or her book will provide. The library is implemented with a pulldown screen projector, attached to one of the beams in the unit, this allows to easily pull it down to screen movies, documentaries, concerts or any audio-visual. A laptop, a small stove and some crockery are also part of the library. The unit can be moved by a bicycle when it is short distances, with one of the librarians sitting on the back; it can also be hooked to a car to travel between cities, increasing the reach of the project. More units can be done to create a network of mobile libraries in Sudan.

A DEMOCRATIC TOOL

The library takes with itself knowledge, art and culture. Books, art expositions by Sudanese artists and audio-visuals are part of the “firefly”. Showing communities the many possibilities to express their ideas and use these as tools to empower them - is the main objective of the library. It is also a place of meeting, conversation and exchange of experiences and ideas where the communal tables allow the possibility of spontaneous interactions.

Base Vehicle A PUBLIC SERVICE TOOL

The library becomes an active agent, where the librarian is also a social worker, who with the help of technology (in this case a laptop) can support and help people to look for job, to access social services, to register to get vaccinated, to advertise their work and could also offer a type of virtual learning - in places where access is limited.

REFERENCE

The Shared Lady Beetle by Luo Studio from China, inspired the proposal, as we believe the use of the bicycle is a sustainable way of transport and the way it closes into a compact unit) fits the requirements.

BUDGET

In order to have an affordable and sustainable library, the materials used are widely available and the unit easily built and replicated. Total Estimated: $ 3000

When closed the unit looks like a solid locked box. Inside, two shelves containing books and appliances are locked to each other. Next to it there is space available for storage of chairs or other items.

2

The walls become the roofs through a system of pulleys and cables that manually lift it.

When Closed: Two shelves facing each other constitute the internal box which can be locked. When Opened: One of the shelves move to the parallel position, through a mechanism of sliding guides.

5

When the unit is stationed and fully opened it looks like a double wing insect, which gives stability to the unit. Power is provided by a battery attached to the bottom of the unit and a solar panel on the top of the central roof.
