Proper Sleeping Support

Supports Your Neck In Its Natural Position The unique center of this pillow is designed to cradle your head and provide the maximum support for your neck. This design helps relieve spasms, alleviate minor tensions and maintain or resume the natural cervical curve of your neck while at rest. Most people experience an increase in sleeping comfort within a couple days. Others, however, may require up to two weeks before the neck and back muscles adjust to their proper position.

Why the shaped center?

The shaped center provides maximum comfort and flexibility. When sleeping on your back, the center cradles your head to support your neck in its most natural position. As you roll from your back to one side, the pillow again properly supports your neck. The sides of the pillow are recommended for side sleeping. The neck is gently held in a comfortable position on the raised section of the pillow. As you roll to your back, the center lets your head nestle for the greatest comfort and appropriate support.

Pillow Fitting Guide Instructions Have the individual stand up straight. Place the rounded edge of the sizing guide to the nape of the individual’s neck. Visualize a vertical line extending upward from the edge of the individual’s shoulder blades. The flat edge of the guide should land on this line. How many of your patients have sleep apnea? An estimated 20-30 million people have sleep apnea, many of whom are undiagnosed. Sleep apnea refers to a temporary cessation of breath during sleep. Patients with sleep apnea often report chronic headaches, drowsiness, memory lapses, and dysfunction during daily activities. Sleep apnea occurs when a patient’s airway becomes blocked during sleep by relaxed throat muscles, excess weight, a large tongue or tonsils, or a very small throat. Sleep apnea is hereditary, and has to do with the body’s physiology. There is no known cure for sleep apnea, but it is highly treatable with CPAP. If your patient is using a CPAP for sleep apnea, recommend the Core CPAP Pillow to increase comfort while using the mask and to achieve proper neck support.

Being away from home doesn’t mean patients have to sacrifice comfort and support. With travel pillows your patients get the same quality as larger cervical pillows, but in a compact and portable size perfect for on the go. Choosing The Right Therapy R.I.C.E. Use the R.I.C.E. treatment method for minor injuries, such as strains, sprains, joint aches, and other soft tissue injuries where swelling occurs. Always consult your health care provider regarding any treatment of injury. Rest: Rest the injured area for the first 24 – 72 hours following injury. Ice: Alternate 20 minutes of cold therapy (see above) with a 20 minute

break. Repeat this 3 - 4 times daily.

Compression: Apply mild pressure to the area with a wrap or extremity brace to reduce swelling.

Elevation: Keep the injured body part elevated, above the level of your heart, as much as possible during the first 72 hours after injury.

When treating an injured extremity or back, it’s important to have staff that can follow up on your treatment protocols in the waiting room by helping patients select the right brace or support for their needs. Our selection guides use the key criteria of breathability, compression, flexibility and stability to rank each of our extremity braces and back belts. These criteria are based on the stages of the inflammatory process, the body’s natural process of healing. This helps your staff choose the support most complementary to the patient’s current stage of care.

Acute Stage of Injury

In the initial stage of injury, the acute stage, the body reacts to an injury by restricting blood flow to prevent blood loss, and then very quickly (within seconds) increases blood flow to initiate the healing process. Injuries in the acute stage respond well to the R.I.C.E. treatment protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Rest gives the area the opportunity to heal without further injury. Ice numbs pain and slows down the inflammatory process, which leads to less swelling and faster recovery time. Compression and elevation also aid in controlling and reducing swelling, a natural occurrence associated with the inflammatory response. The acute stage is generally considered to last the first 72 hours post injury. Products appropriate for this stage provide compression and cold therapy to control the inflammatory process and stability to prevent further injury.

Sub-Acute Stage of Injury

The second stage, described as subacute, is considered to last from 72 hours to six to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the injury. A mild muscle injury, for example, may recover in four weeks whereas a bone fracture could take eight weeks. In this stage, the inflammatory process is under control and rehabilitation is initiated. Products appropriate for this stage provide compression to control swelling and support and stability to provide early protection and support during activity.

Chronic Stage of Injury

The third, or chronic stage is past the six to eight week time frame when most injuries should be resolved. Overuse syndromes often fall into this category because the injured area has not had enough “rest” and isn’t fully healed. Products appropriate for this stage often provide warmth by constraining body heat to increase circulation and thereby facilitate healing. They also provide moderate to maximum stability or support to prevent re-injury.

Product Selection Guide

Our product selection guide uses these four terms: Breathability, Compression, Flexibility and Stability.

Breathability

Breathability is product’s ability to allow the passage of air and moisture through the fabric. A product with a high number will feel cooler and a product with a lower number will feel warmer when used. If the injury is chronic, retaining body heat is desired and a product with a low breathability number would be the best selection.

Compression

Compression is the ability of the product to provide circumferential pressure, that is pressure around the injured joint and the surrounding area. This pressure helps to control swelling and provides a reassuring feeling of joint strength. The higher the compression number, the more circumferential pressure the brace provides.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the quality that allows freedom of movement when using the product. Generally, as stability increases, flexibility decreases. For example, a brace or support that has a 5 for stability will only have a 1 for flexibility. Chronic injuries will require products that balance the need for flexibility with the need for stability.

Stability

Stability is the quality that provides additional support to weak structures. For example, ankle sprains result in some weakness to the ligaments that support the ankle. An ankle brace that has a high number for stability will enhance the weak ligament’s ability to stabilize the ankle. The higher the stability number the more support the brace or support provides.

How It Works

Basal Joint Arthritis: All the common symptoms of arthritis occurring at the base of the thumb caused by normal wear and tear. Recommend a support that encloses the thumb. Dr. Kennedy’s Neck Deck provides gentle, comfortable extension traction to re-establish the cervical curve and help with long-term pain relief. The unique design allows patients to ease into their traction treatment in-clinic, followed by continued use at home. Patients begin by lying on or sitting against the contoured foam base for a few minutes each day. As they become more comfortable (usually within a week), patients can add short inflation sessions with the neck roll and finally add the forehead strap with greater inflation force for a longer duration. It is important to begin extension therapy with several, in-office, supervised sessions. This will ensure proper use and tolerance of the unit for continued treatment at home. Available in blue.
