B
FROM THE DEAN
y channeling the drive of every member of the Isenberg community on this campus and beyond, we have risen in the national rankings and we are well on our way to becoming one of the top ten business schools in the country. The momentum is palpable. We made this progress because of the energy and efforts of our faculty and staff, the drive and quality of our students, and the growing engagement and support of our alumni. However, there is still much to do. To continue to improve, and truly become one of the nation’s elite public business schools, we need to continue garnering support for strategic investments in five key areas: augmenting our student experience, increasing our student scholarships, building on our diversity and inclusion efforts, improving our educational facilities, and growing faculty support that allows us to retain and recruit excellent talent. The stories in the following pages offer some excellent examples of some early successes in these initiatives. This Dean’s Report is not only a summary of the 2017-2018 academic year, but of my ninth and final year as dean. I am excited about continuing to serve the Isenberg community and the entire University of Massachusetts Amherst campus as vice chancellor for development and alumni relations. I am taking this new role because I believe for Isenberg (and the campus) to succeed, alumni engagement is absolutely critical. Our alumni provide the margin of excellence to drive our strategic initiatives forward.
I believe our greatest accomplishment over the past nine years is the assembly of a faculty, staff, and leadership team that helps create a uniquely collaborative and energetic culture. It is the work that they do every day that will continue to draw outstanding students, engage our impressive alumni network, and enhance our reputation. I am very pleased to announce that Tom Moliterno will be interim dean. Tom has been Isenberg’s vice dean and associate dean for external relations and engagement for the past four years. He and I have worked closely on a wide range of school-level initiatives, including the construction of the Business Innovation Hub, financial and strategic planning, and other critical operational and administrative functions. Tom also holds the Earl W. Stafford endowed professorship in entrepreneurial studies, and is a world-class educator and researcher. His well-rounded approach to teaching, research, and institution building reflects the kinds of outstanding faculty that we are proud to attract. Although I will most definitely miss being the dean of such an extraordinary school, I have complete confidence that our leadership, our new facilities, and growing alumni support, position Isenberg for continued success in the years to come. Sincerely, Mark A. Fuller, PhD Dean, Isenberg School of Management Thomas O’Brien Endowed Chair
THOMAS P. MOLITERNO, PH.D
It is a privilege and an honor to serve as interim dean of the Isenberg School and fill the breach between Mark’s departure and the appointment of the next dean. I do not need to tell you that we are doing great things, and I look forward to working with you all to maintain our momentum over the coming year. We have many exciting milestones ahead, including the opening of our new building. So as we catch our breath following another terrific year, know that I am focused on making next year even better. See you soon.

“
Ultimately, my relationship with Isenberg and UMass is about people, education, networking, and pride. It’s also about giving back.” PA U L CA RNEY ΄82
PAUL CARNEY ’82 has demonstrated an exemplary level of commitment and devotion to Isenberg through his broad and increasing array of gifts to the school in support of all five areas of impact crucial to Isenberg’s growth. When Isenberg’s Business Innovation Hub opens its doors next January, its state-of-the-art café and seating area will bear the proud name of Carney and his family. Recalling the Flavin Family Auditorium (2002), Carney chose to follow in that family’s footsteps. “I wanted my family’s $1M gift to have
similar prominence,” says Carney. The Isenberg accounting grad also created the Carney Endowed Professorship and the needs-based Paul J. Carney Scholarship for international students at Isenberg in support of students whose multiculturalism, he believes, is critical to an Isenberg education. “Ultimately, my relationship with Isenberg and UMass is about people, education, networking, and pride. It’s also about giving back—paying forward my own experiences and opportunities to those who have and will follow me.”

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION FRAN HUTCHINS MBA ’13
FACILITIES LINDA COTTON RONAN ’82, a recently retired executive from Fidelity Investments and formerly with Andersen Consulting, has been regularly supporting Isenberg for the last 30 years. So, when one of the school’s fundraisers asked her to consider increasing her financial impact by naming a space in the new Business Innovation Hub, she saw the value in that opportunity. “I was toward the end of my career and the new building presented the right opportunity,” she says. In keeping with the value she places on human connections at Isenberg, Ronan chose to fund two conference rooms. When thinking about her career, she is proudest of her ability to be an effective mentor and leader, moving people and businesses forward toward achieving their goals. “When I think about the things that matter the most, the people and experiences that shaped me into the person that I am, I put Isenberg high on that list. Giving back is one way I can honor the impact the L INDA COT T ON RONA N ΄82 school has had on me.”
“Long before I ever stepped on campus, people I never knew gave to Isenberg. I benefited from their support and now it is my turn to give back.”
An Isenberg education transformed Fran Hutchins’ career in advocacy from groundlevel work to a national leadership role. The Isenberg MBA graduate is deputy director of the Equality Federation, a national organization and network that partners with state-based organizations on behalf of LGBTQ equality. Hutchins’ $25K commitment to Isenberg to help create scholarships underscores her gratitude to the school. As a broadly conceived scholarship, it also reflects her determination to empower first generation college students and/ or students from underrepresented populations. “I was one of very few students of color in Isenberg’s MBA program,” Hutchins recalls. “That’s one among many underrepresented populations that the scholarship will help.” At Isenberg, Hutchins learned everything from group dynamics to financial analytics to systems skills. Her application of these skills at Equality Federation has helped the organization to better fulfill its advocacy mission. “Isenberg took genuine interest in me and my goals as a student. I couldn’t have done the MBA without a fellowship from the school,” she says. Hutchins’ gift to Isenberg and its students continues her own family’s pattern of giving since her father established scholarships for students at his alma mater.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE GARY CAMERON ’89, a senior portfolio manager with the global asset management firm Garda Capital Partners and the head of its USD trading team, has maintained his connection to Isenberg in a number of of ways. He helped create a scholarship for outstanding finance students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The other half of his gift went without restriction to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence. “That’s because the dean knows best where my support will have the greatest yield,” Cameron says. A portion of that gift was indeed used to support a worthy cause: the annual Women of Isenberg Conference. For Cameron, one barometer of Isenberg’s continuous improvement was the increasing polish of the Isenberg student interns who joined him at J.P. Morgan Chase during his last five years at the company. As an engaged alumnus, Cameron deserves credit too for his own ongoing mentorship in the classroom as a frequent guest lecturer. He also helped manage a student team for Professor Mila Sherman’s Alternative Investments class.

SCHOLARSHIPS CHARLES P. MCQUAID ’74 recently invested in an endowed scholarship that is making an Isenberg education more affordable for up to four outstanding students from McQuaid’s hometown of Ware, MA, and surrounding communities. The current scholarship recipient, Isenberg sophomore Emma Jopson ’20, is a native of Belchertown. McQuaid, who served as co-founder, president and CIO at Columbia Wanger Asset Management, has “If Isenberg enabled Jopson to pursue her dream. “I worked hard in high school to graduate with a 4.0 and get were a stock, into Isenberg. But the costs of higher education were discouraging. Mr. McQuaid has lightened I’d invest the financial burden on my family and me with in it in a this generous scholarship.” Jopson’s two siblings heartbeat.” attend college and her mother has significant medical expenses. McQuaid is also an example of CHARLES P. MCQUAID '74 a committed alumnus and donor who has funded multiple initiatives. In gratitude to his former Isenberg professors, he created the $1.5M Charles P. McQuaid Endowed Professorship, to which Dr. Bing Liang has recently been appointed. In 2016, after 37 years, McQuaid fully retired from Columbia Wanger Asset Management. He remains professionally active as an investor and serves on two non-profit boards.

FACULTY SUPPORT JOHN N. SPINNEY, JR. ’87 Long-time Isenberg supporter John Spinney, who is COO and CFO of the Boston-based hedge fund Bracebridge Capital, LLC is frank about his deep appreciation and respect for the faculty mentors he was fortunate enough to learn from when he was a student. The impact that these faculty—Professors Richard H. Simpson, James P. O’Connell, and Robert W. Lentilhon—had on Spinney’s career motivated him to work tirelessly to fund endowed professorships in their honor. Spinney began his mission with a generous financial contribution and by marshaling additional alumni support to create the Richard H. Simpson Endowed Professorship, the Accounting department’s first endowed faculty position. Spinney then made a $250K gift to fund the James P. O’Connell Endowed Professorship in partnership with a fellow accounting alumnus. He is currently in discussions to provide financial support to fund a third endowed professorship named for Professor Robert W. Lentilhon, and he recently pledged $1.5M in his estate plan to create the future John N. Spinney, Jr. Endowed Professorship in Accountancy. By championing the creation of endowed professorships, Spinney ensures that current and future generations of Isenberg students receive the same impactful education that he received. LEAH NDANGA
GEORGE PETTINICO
CHEZHAM SEALY
“How do local, multinational corporations from emerging countries break into the international arena?” asks Leah Ndanga, a PhD candidate in management strategy. Through analysis of five emerging market multinational enterprises (EMMs) based in South Africa, Ndanga explored their decisionmaking, international target markets, and home country dynamics. Ndanga’s dissertation chair is fellow African Mzamo Mangaliso. “Mzamo helped me to leverage my economics background and embrace my Africanness.”
In his doctoral dissertation, 2018 marketing PhD graduate George Pettinico explored the uses and limitations of quantification-of-self devices like Fitbits and gamification. One positive outcome: QOS can prove fruitful in consumer products aimed at goal completion. “My dissertation chair, George Milne, helped me to transition from a corporate marketing researcher to an academic researcher,” Pettinico recalls. “There is a true ‘one for all’ spirit at Isenberg.”
“Behavioral accounting research like my own has real-world implications,” says Chezham Sealy, who will join the University of Alabama’s accounting department in fall 2018 as an assistant professor. “My findings,” he says, “could help managers better design CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives to maximize returns on investment as well as positive outcomes for society. And my research may well shed light on the ongoing debate to regulate CSR reporting.”

ONLINE MBA IN THE WORLD
FINANCIAL TIMES, 2018
IS THE MBA DEAD? In a recent article with the Boston Business Journal, John Wells, UMass vice provost for Online Education, was asked how Isenberg was keeping MBA options relevant to more students in a time characterized by fewer applications and the closure of several programs across the country. Here is his response:
Having both an online and full-time presence and mixing them in the way Isenberg does is a competitive advantage. Students still like to get that online MBA at a university or a school that has a full-time presence because it attracts alumni and guest speakers. As long as we capture that and deliver it online, the online students get to take advantage of that as well.

As a junior, I participated in the Semester in the Profession Program (SIPP) with RSM which led to an internship and eventually, a full time offer almost a year and a half before I graduated. Professor Cathy Lowry from one of my first classes (Intro to Accounting) has become my biggest inspiration and the Chase Career Center was also key to my recruiting efforts.”
I was amazed by the number of finance clubs and organizations offered to Isenberg students. I took advantage of this extensive network and chose to join the Minutemen Fixed Income Fund and Investment Club my freshmen year. My decision to stay active in both groups throughout college helped me develop the technical and soft skills I needed for a career on Wall Street.”
I have grown so much personally and professionally at Isenberg. My deep commitment to the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality positioned me to become the President of the UMass Chapter. In that capacity, I had the remarkable opportunity to participate in annual regional and national conferences and to take a leadership role in organizing a variety of events and meetings on campus.”
During my freshman year, my mentors in the Women in Business Club encouraged me to attend the Chase Career Center career fair. I am so grateful they did because it allowed me to make powerful connections with recruiters at top companies like TJX. I secured this position through a competition organized by the Isenberg Sales Club at HubSpot. After my success, I was encouraged to apply for the Business Development Representative position and within two weeks, I had a signed offer. I know I will stay involved as an alum. My first step will be to join forces with those looking to build out the University's own annual sales competition.”
The students that I have surrounded myself with at Isenberg are truly driven. Their work ethic, tenacity, and hunger for improvement has encouraged me to push myself to limits that I didn't think possible when I entered college. There is no better learning experience than working through some extremely complex and challenging problems with awesome people late at night in an Isenberg break-out room.”
Isenberg has prepared me for this position by giving me a business background in a field that is mostly taught through kinesiology or other departments at other universities. As an Isenberg senior, I found that I was better prepared for the professional world than many of my peers, who sought out my advice on resumes, business attire, and other tasks related to the job search.”

STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Isenberg students work hard in and out of the classroom. They receive support from
the school through resources such as the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, faculty mentors and undergraduate advisors.
CITIZENS FIRST
Isenberg Citizens First (ICF), a program of the Isenberg Undergraduate Programs office and the first member of the broader Citizens First Initiative (CFI), was formed with the core belief that Isenberg students are citizens of the world, first and foremost, and that community and character are essential to the context of a business career. ICF offers a service internship abroad in partnership with various nonprofit organizations. The program gives students a chance to work with high school classrooms in South African communities, where students are provided with laptops for computer labs as well as training and education. Students are also given the opportunity to improve Students teaching the lives of children in an students updated under-resourced orphanage technology in through the planting of a large South Africa sustainable garden.

PROJECT YELLOW LIGHT ACLARITY Aclarity, LLC is a dynamic startup founded by two forward-thinking graduate students at UMass Amherst, Julie Bliss Mullen, an engineering PhD, and Barrett Mully, an Isenberg MBA '18 fellow with the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship. Mullen had developed a Barrett and patent-pending electrochemical technology that removes pathogens, Julie presenting at Summer metals, and other impurities from water in a highly efficient and Accelerator. sustainable process. Seeking partnership to develop the business model, she enrolled in an entrepreneurship class where Mully served as a teaching assistant. Mully was instantly compelled by the startup’s viability. The two quickly formed a partnership and eventually won the top award in the 2017 UMass Innovation Challenge, claiming $26,000 in seed money. The duo incorporated under Aclarity in May 2017 and collaborated with industry leader Watts Water Technologies, Inc. for the residential market before participating in Berthiaume’s 2017 inaugural Summer Accelerator. Having recently been awarded $27,500 from the Valley Venture Mentors Startup Accelerator program, the future of Aclarity is promising.
Since the medium is the message, any roadside ad asking drivers to pay attention and not text had better get right to the point. This principle was fundamental to the victory of the UMass student team made up of Isenberg undergraduate Kyle Pandiscio ’19 and BDIC graduate Julia Keefe ’17, whose award-winning PSA was displayed on thousands of digital billboards across the country. Pandiscio and Keefe came up with a dynamic design which autocorrects “Don’t Text and Drive” to “Don’t Text and Die”—to reinforce the concept that a texting-related accident can occur in a split second. Their project, “Auto Car-Wreck”, won first place out of 1,150 designs in the billboard display category for Project Yellow Light, a competition designed to bring about change.
