Safe Mothers and Newborns Accelerating the Reduction of Maternal and Neonatal Mortality: A Leadership Workshop WHEN: June 28 - July 3, 2015 WHERE: Barcelona, Spain WHAT: This 6-day workshop will provide participants from high-burden countries with the technical knowledge and leadership skills they need to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. Participants will gain knowledge on: • Main determinants and global trends in maternal and neonatal mortality. • Evidence-based interventions for improving maternal and newborn health and survival, and potential delivery platforms. • Available metrics for monitoring and evaluating progress, and indicators for assessing the quality and coverage of maternal and newborn health interventions. They will also develop and strengthen: • Problem solving and analytical skills needed to lead, design, implement, evaluate and improve policies and strategies in the countries where they work. Applying proven business concepts and effective programme management strategies, participants will gain a clear understanding of how to scale-up interventions and successfully reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.
WHO: Mid-career professionals and decisionmakers from low and middle income countries* with a high burden of maternal and newborn mortality who have proven experience in reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) and current responsibilities in the health sector, including: • Programme managers, policy makers in relevant fields, programme officers of NGOs or UN agencies. (It is expected that this profile will account for at least 75% of participants.) • Members of international non-governmental, research or academic institutions with a track record in maternal and neonatal health. (Applicants fitting this description will also be considered.) There are 30 places available on the workshop and all candidates must be nominated. Course participants will be selected by the workshop organisers and faculty from among the nominations received. Scholarships will be available.
