LAYERS OF METAPHOR

Chittagong is one of the most culturally diverse and naturally blessed regions of Bangladesh. The mystic landscape is adorned with beautiful mountains, lakes, sea beaches and rivers. Chittagong has become a tourist attraction for its sanctity, its peacefulness, and its beauty. An accommodation facility for the tourists of Chittagong can be a place to sense and experience the majestic landscape of the hill tracts and the merging of water to the landscape.

The high-rise hotel building is designed to replicate the image of Chittagong hill tracts. The outdoor terrace in different levels stands as an abstract representation of jumm cultivation. The gradual decrease of the building mass mimics the topographical image of a hill. The winged form opens towards the entry and the road, thus creating an inviting approach for the guests. Spaces of different scales were provided in the podium levels of the hotel to promote visual connection and communication.

MRT STATION & TRANSITIONAL SPACE IN FARMGATE

In the past decades, Dhaka city has grown exponentially due to the rapid urbanization. The transportation infrastructure of Dhaka city has become vulnerable and insufficient to serve this huge amount of people. To get Dhaka rid of this problem, certain steps have been taken, such as the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) and elevated expressway.

The installation of a new transportation system faces many complexities and challenges. Often the plans for the new infrastructural work conflicts with the existing city texture and historic image. The MRT-6 line runs through a major spine of Dhaka starting from Uttara and ending in Motijheel. On its way, MRT line 6 has encountered some critical spots. While crossing the Begum Rokeya Sharani, the MRT line violates the master plan of national parliament building by Louis I Kahn. With sensitive approach towards planning, this issue can be solved.

Option 01

DTCB proposal location of the station over Khamarbari road.

Option 02 Realigning the MRT line over the hospital and locating the station over Indira Road.

The project geometry was derived from the existing historical terminal buildings of Bangladesh.

Option 3

The station is moved to the South of the park and new structure is proposed for the hospital.

Option 04

The station is moved to the South-west of the park by relocating the hospital.

Among all the basic shapes, triangle was chosen to create a pattern for overall building form.

The circulation pattern of the building was also designed in a triangular pattern.

To preserve the environment of the park, the surface of the park is lifted to provide necessary circulation beneath it. The surface above becomes an uninterrupted urban park for the public.

Famrgate area is a major transitional space for Dhaka, which poses a major challenge for the project. The aim of the thesis is not only to design a metro station, but also addressing relevant urban issues concerning the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar park and the surrounding area and approach the problems created by the alignment of the MRT line 6 sensitively.

A major issue of the project was vehicular and pedestrian traffic congestion and conflict. The bus stoppages of Indira Road were relocated under the plaza level to segregate it from the MRT circulation. Eviction of the flower market, haphazard commercial activity, street vendors occupying pedestrian was major issues to address in this project. The street shopping scenario and the flower market were integrated in the project to provide economic activity to make the project economically viable.

RE-DESIGN OF DHAKA MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL

The Dhaka Medical College Hospital is located in the middle of the heart of Dhaka. The main building was built before the partition of Bengal in 1905, and still existing as a cultural heritage. The purpose of the building changed throughout the years and several extensions were performed. A city grew around the old building, and today Dhaka houses nearly 20 million people. A new master plan for the medical college hospital and the surrounding areas requires a careful intervention, keeping its socio-cultural context, built, and natural environment in mind.

The designed area includes significant administrative and educational buildings as well as National Language Martyrs’ Memorial. The heritage value of several buildings inside the site requires careful planning considerations, while buildings constructed during different time periods and styles need to be tied together in a coherent design strategy. The site already has a considerable amount of green space, although much of it is not well maintained. There is scope in the project to accentuate the existing green spaces while designing new public green spaces. The road network and infrastructure development need to be carefully tailored according to the needs of the hospital. The existing dilapidated buildings with no architectural or historical significance were carefully listed to be demolished. The free spaces are utilized to propose new buildings according to requirements.

NORTH- WESTERN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

North-Western University site is located 9 kms from Khulna city boundary. Once built, the new university campus will serve the city by providing much needed higher education facilities. The design was focused on providing interactive learning and knowledge sharing platforms to the prospective students. The campus is designed to house all the facilities that a university needs in a single mid-rise building.

The whole campus was designed to be permeable to all students with the provision of multiple outdoor spaces. The two naturally ventilated main blocks of the campus are arranged around an inner courtyard. The front extruding building mass houses multipurpose halls and auditoriums, while providing an inviting approach for everyone. Student interaction spaces were designed near the stairs to promote spontaneous interactions. The façades of the blocks were designed to mimic books in a bookshelf.

WZPDCL GUEST HOUSE

The project is a 4-storied rest house complex for West Zone Power Development Company Limited (WZPDCL) in Khulna. The main objective of the project was to create a comfortable recreational environment for the guests. Climatic concerns have governed the form of the building, and great emphasis was put on preserving existing nature while occupying minimal building footprint. The priority of the project was to create sensible architectural spaces and ensure quality of accommodation.

The functions of the project were arranged in a single built form under a large canopy-like roof. Free-flowing spaces were designed to create visual connectivity while wide aperture maximized the views and ensured Southern exposure.
