Hostel Design | SEM 6 | Site: 70m x 45m Studio Guides: Ar. Prashanth G pole Ar. Mohommad Mansoor The structure is similar to existing language, which creates two 5 meter volumes in which individial rooms are spread in two levels.

• Studio brief was to design a hostel as part of the existing WCFA campus for students and the excercise was concluded within 3 weeks time. • The idea was to continue the same language of courtyard spaces(built vs open) in the campus.

The hostel blocks sit such that the view of the green area from existing blocks is not disturbed.

• Main intention of this particular project was to reduce the hierarchy between different batches with respect to hostel rooms and interactive, common spaces.

Requirements: No. of srudents: 100 (60 girls+ 40 boys) Dining hall capacity: 60

Two volumes of 5m is divided into 2.5m volume each for individual rooms to occupy, with maintaining inter-floor connections by having floor cut-outs which would help increase the interaction.

ART SCHOOL | CAMPUS DESIGN | SEM 6 Studio Guides: Ar. Prashanth G pole Ar. Mohommad Mansoor

• The brief was to design an art institute for undergraduate and post-graduate students of various fields of art from fine art and sculpture to graphics and photography. • The key idea was to form organic spaces through the arrangement of rigid built forms. Thus the arrangement generated a street which is dynamic. • It is a campus where mutual learning happens across various departments without any hierarchy between students. • Each corner of the campus facilitates interaction between students as they meet intentionally or while they pass by. • Some main factors for the functional zoning are natural contours, existing trees, views, climate. Requirements: •Departments •Common Facilities •Circulation min. 25%

The street leads one person to varoius points of the campus and many corners under the tree and beside the buildings.

Objective:

ENCROACH THE ENCROACHMENT

• To demonstrate that an abandoned quarry can be reused.

| INSTITUTION DESIGN | SEM 7

• It is wise to have an environment research institute since the focus of study is on earth and it’s environment. • The site can also turn into a place which spreads awareness to the people through various events and exhibitions.

Studio Guides: Ar. Prashanth G pole Ar. Girish Dariyav Karnavat Ar. Kavana Kumar

Intent:

Encroach the Encroachment was theme set for the semester. The objective was to question the methods in which architecture is praticed today and look at sustainability as an important aspect while designing. Site and program had to be chosen by one self with respect to a concern that one had. The site that one choose had to be ‘radical’ and the project could not be built on fresh land and had to find place on land that has already been encroached by humans in the past.

• Once the resources are depleted, quarries are frequently abandoned. They are also abandoned many times due to the ground water accumulation. The result is that these quarries turn into gaping holes filled with water and form large quarry lakes while others are turned into unsightly landfills. • These abandoned quarries can be adaptively used for a variety of public and private spaces. The potential uses for these expanses of land include sites for research and education, aquaculture, recreational activities, storage, industry and housing. • A good transformation of a quarry site into a variety of sustainable uses would not only remedy the negative effects of quarrying, but could create sites of greater social and environmental construct.

It’s critical to think radically about the present and possible future issues of sustainability. It’s important to develop critical analytical skills and imagination – to start asking the right questions. Where do we build? What do we build? How do we build? Why do we build? And Who do we build for? All these along with the thought of ‘What should we do to return nature back to nature?’

SITE: TATA Steel and Mining, Doddakanya, near Kadakola, Nanjangud road, MYSORE.

Program and Areas: 2500m2 For 75 researchers and 150 visitors(temporary)

Details: • Quarried Material was white stone(magnesite) and dunite for steel manufacturing. • Depth of visible steps from ground level to the water level is approx. 15 meters, each step being 3 meters height. • Water remains throughout the year in the quarry. • Quarry is 2-3 times deeper than the visible steps. • Quarry was active for 50-60 years, and closed before 15 years ago because of groundwater lake formation.

Administration - Reception + visitors’ longue + storage +admin = 150m2 Library = 200m2 Office spaces = 300m2 Research labs = 50m2 x 5 = 250m2 Conference halls = 50m2 x 2 = 100m2 Guest rooms = 350m2 (for 25 people) Kitchen & dining area = 250m2 Toilets = 75m2 Exhibition space = 100m2 Workshop space = 150m2

The idea is to use the ground for public activity and the focused functions are above. The arrangement is linear, allowing maximised views for each space, while also following existing topography.

Ventilation is facilitated by the thermal mass wall on west facade, air inside heats up and rises above and escapes through the vents in the roof, and cool air is sucked from lake side (east).

OTHER WORKS

Tensile Structure Installation Site: Byrathi House, Bangalore. Project guide: Ar. Dyan Belliappa Merials used: Black shade net as tensile fabric, casuarina poles as masts, ropes for tying. The tensile structure is designed as an installation put up for Vasasntaka, a classical music festival. The structure would house the exhibits explaining about festival and Byrathi House. The tensile structure was chosen so that it in itself would become an installation that is aesthetically pleasing and dynamic. The membranous structure supported by masts and ropes bring in lightness. Taking inspiration from the mango orchard, the intention of the structure was to have plenty of light and ventilation under a large covering. An experience of filtered light is brought through the choice of fabric to create an ambience similar to that under the foliage of trees. The simple saddle shaped Hyperbolic paraboloid is metamorphosed to create a unique pleasing form which represents the new rising event, ‘Vasasntaka’.

Furniture design, Visual arts, SEM 1 • The group excercise was to design an actual scale, working furniture with taking inspiration from nature. • This particular rocking chair design is abstracted from water droplet. • The material used was carton sheets in multiples, with the help of glue gun.
