CONTENTS COVER On the cover: Over the past 25 years, there has been a strong tendency for orthodontists to increase arch length in order to treat crowded dental arches without tooth extraction. A lingual arch or a Schwarz appliance can be used to increase arch length during the mixed dentition. But does either of these strategies cause later problems, such as molar impaction? See the article by Rubin et al to find the answer. The smiling patient on the cover is Hans Hidalgo, who was treated orthodontically by Dr. John Bilodeau from Springfield, Virginia.

CONTENTS COVER On the cover: Most orthodontists do not mount pretreatment dental casts on an articulator before beginning orthodontic treatment. In fact, the trend is now shifting toward digital dental casts, which cannot be mounted. On the other hand, so me orthodontists believe that mounted dental casts are crucial to a correct understanding of a patient's occlusal relationships. Who is correct? Read the Point-Counterpoint in this issue of the journal and decide for yourself. The smiling patient on the cover is Kalli Ohton, who was treated orthodontically by Dr. Benjamin Larrabee from Mesa, Arizona.
