What Is Happiness? Text 36: sukham tv idanim tri-vidham shrinu me bharatarshabha abhyasad ramate yatra duhkhantam cha nigachchhati O best of the Bharatas, now please hear from Me about the three kinds of happiness by which the conditioned soul enjoys, and by which sometimes comes to the end of all distress.
Text 37: yat tad agre viham iva pariname mitopamam tat sukham sattvikam proktam atma-buddhi-prasada-jam That which in the beginning maybe just like poison but at the end is just like nectar and which awakens one to self-realization is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness.
Text 38: vishayendriya-sanyogad yat tad agre mritopamam pariname visham iva tat sukham rajasam smritam That happiness which is derived from contact of the senses with their objects and which appears like nectar at first but poison at the end is said to be the nature of passion.
Text 39: yad agre chanubandhe cha sukham mohanam atmanah nidralasya-pramadottha tat tamasam udahritam And that happiness which is blind to self-realisation, which is delusion from beginning to end and which arises from sleep, laziness and illusion is said to be of the nature of ignorance. Community development team krishna club
K
rishna Club has continued providing spiritual education to children in the community. The children had their first kirtan performance at London Mellows on Sunday 21st July. In the weeks leading up to this, they had practice sessions facilitated by community members, Kate, Gayathri and Vignesh, who helped them build up their confidence. The Krishna Club children had a half-hour slot after Raja-Bhoga Arati where they sung the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, Jaya Radha Madhava, and Nrsimhadeva Prayers, to the delight of the audience present.
Music lessons As an additional service to help the children gain more taste for kirtan, and to fulfil the request of parents who have expressed their desire for their children to learn instruments, in conjunction with London College of Vedic Studies, a 10-week Kartals and Mrdanga course, taught by Krishna Chaitanya Parmar, has been set-up for those who are interested. It takes place on Sundays just before Krishna Club.

Walk Against Hunger Report by Tina Savani
WALKING THE “ WALK AGAINST HUNGER” The greatly awaited, dynamic and eagerlyanticipated event in the history of Food for Life London, Walk Against Hunger, finally took place on Saturday 29th June. The aim of the 10-mile fundraising walk was to raise funds for an eco-friendly electric food van to help feed the homeless. Around 250 people from across the UK across all age groups gathered on Saturday 29th June on the hottest day of the year (and the warmest June day for around 40 years, with temperatures peaking at 34OC) to participate in the walk. Starting and ending at ISKCON-London Radha-Krishna Temple, the walk passed places associated with the early days of ISKCON in the UK as well as some of the traditional London landmarks. “Sites visited included 22 Betterton Street, where the original devotees first established themselves; 182 Drury Lane, home of the former Arts Lab where the devotees performed; 7 Bury Place, the location of the original Radha-Krishna Temple in London where Sri-Sri Radha-Londonisvara were installed; Russell Square Gardens and Conway Hall, where Srila Prabhupada went on walks and gave talks; and Trafalgar Square, where the London Rathayatra recently celebrated its 51st annual festival.” David Crick, Photographer London sights included Hyde Park, London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, and Tower of London. Many senior devotees in ISKCON were present including Pankajanghri dasa and Bhakti Rasamrita Swami. Monks from Bhaktivedanta Manor also joined the walk as a nice sign of support from other 14
Temples, including Guru dasa, Niskincana dasa, Radha Govinda dasa, and others. The walk was split into three groups, starting between 10am and 11.30am, two groups of which did harinama along the way, playing instruments such as the mrdanga and kartals, and dancing. The ecstatic harinama groups got so enthralled in the harinama that the walk took over 6 hours to complete. People danced in ecstasy as they sang the holy names of the Lord in the heat in their Walk Against Hunger T-shirts. The sight was mesmerising and nicely showcased their enthusiasm for both the holy name and the Food for Life cause. Many media reporters also arrived to take photos, conduct interviews, and video parts of the event. Food for Life’s chief organiser, Acyuta Charan dasa (who last year received the British Empire Medal for his outstanding work for Food for Life) said: ‘’The walk symbolises our aim of ensuring no-one goes hungry within a 10-mile radius of the Food for Life mission. The vital funds we raise from this fundraising walk will go towards giving out more meals and an electric van to help us do this”. On completion of the walk, made more intense by the heat, the walkers were welcomed back to cheers and all enjoyed a sumptuous vegetarian meal. MEDIA INTEREST There were many exciting moments in the leadup to the walk. The fundraising team were given slots on BBC Radio London 94.9 FM and Leading Britain’s Conversation digital radio station to talk about the walk. This helped to not only promote the walk but also raised the profile of Food for Life immensely, raising awareness about the wonderful work the team do.
Food for Life A TEAM BUILT FOR SUCCESS The Fundraising team, co-headed by Rajiv Nandha and Tina Savani, started off quite small and grew immensely to over 30 volunteers by the time the walk came around, with volunteers inspired and excited by the prospect of supporting such an important and pioneering mission. Food for Life TARGET REACHED - THANK YOU ALL DONORS! The Food for Life fundraising team are thrilled to announce that they successfully reached the target of £60,000 which will help to fund a 100% carbon-free, electric food van to help serve the homeless. Food for Life currently go out every Monday to Saturday to Lincoln’s Inn fields in Holborn and distribute approximately 1,200 plates of prasadam each week. With the new van, the distribution level can now be increased and more prasadam can be served from different locations all across London at different times. The service can also be carried out in a more efficient and effective way, ensuring high levels of hygiene standards are maintained throughout. WHAT’S NEXT? In preparation for a new era for Food for Life with the new eco food van, Food for Life team members are discussing ways of improving the overall running of Food for Life and raising standards. This will hopefully contribute to improving the overall service and allow it to continue running successfully for many years to come.

outreach
T
Report by Dayal Mora dasa
he months of May, June and July have seen the Outreach department engaged in many new experimental outreach activities. With the weather in our favour, many of these were outdoor activities, starting with a day-trip to Bhaktivedanta Manor on Tuesday 7th May of which 20 newcomers participated. Of a similar nature, was the trip to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice celebrations where brahmacaris and friends guided by Maha Vishnu Swami and Parasurama dasa entertained the thousands present with all-night harinama and parikrama around the stones. Another novelty for the department is the twoweek trip to India next January and February 2020, organised by Champakalata Priya devi dasi, targeted to newcomers who are serious about deepening their experience of bhakti. Relationships are being built with Kirtan London, mainly by connecting Mantra Lounge and Wisdom Wednesdays together. This has resulted in quite a substantial network of people spread between the two preaching programmes. Due to this, plus the feature of special guests such as Jayadvaita Swami, Adi Karta dasa, Kadamba Kanana Swami, Sri Prahlada dasa etc., the Wednesday programme has seen a growing number of participants. For those ready for more, two more in-depth programmes are available on a weekly basis, both of which include ecstatic kirtans and honouring

prasadam. Respectively, a philosophy evening on Friday night led by Syama Kisora dasa, and a brahmacari sanga, aka Prema Lounge, which takes place every Monday night. This way, the whole week is structured so to offer plenty of events, each one meant to facilitate the transition into higher standards of practice. Simultaneously, the Outreach department did not miss the opportunity to attend and engage newcomers at the 10-mile Walk Against Hunger on Saturday 29th June, at the local Soho Fete on the 30th, and at OmFest on Sunday 14th July. All these activities were very conducive for newcomers to explore bhakti through nonconventional and pragmatic activities whilst feeling part of our community. The Outreach department is now finalising one of the biggest events of the year in terms of preaching – the UK Padayatra, aka “Walk for Peace” – which will take place from the 12th to the 20th of August.
RADHA KRISHNA RECORDS
R
adha Krishna Records had a very successful launch of Mantra Lounge Volume 3 on Sunday 9th June. The event took place at ISKCON-London and really inspired the artists and guests singing together to the fantastic tracks. Even as the event unfolded live in London, the album was being released internationally on all digital channels and succeeded in crossing a few milestones for Radha Krishna Records albums in the iTunes charts for New Age music. It achieved number 1 in the UK, number 25 in the UAE, number 26 in India, number 26 in Taiwan, and number 43 in Brazil. Through digital channels, Radha Krishna Records music reaches over 50,000 listeners monthly and is particularly popular in the UK, USA, Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia. The Mantra Lounge efforts have a great reach and are very well-received but are only possible with the generous help of sponsors and artists. Mantra Lounge Volume 3 was particularly supported by the late Janaki devi dasi. You can purchase the album online on all digital channels, physically from Radha’s Boutique, or via the website, www.radhakrishnarecords.com

RUSSIAN VEDIC SOCIETY
n Sunday 5th May, the Russian Vedic Society (RVS) celebrated its 8th Anniversary, which was dedicated to Srila Prabhupada. Special guests, Bhakti Rasayana Sagar Swami, Narahari dasa, and Jai Nitai dasa shared their personal stories related to Srila Prabhupada and their spiritual paths in ISKCON. The RVS team was fortunate to listen to Srila Prabhupada katha from Bhakti Rasayana Sagar Swami who kindly introduced Srila Prabhupada’s cardigan to the team. Attendees admired the poetry recitation and songs about Srila Prabhupada, watched two performances, had an ecstatic kirtan led by Radha Londonisvara dasa, and concluded with honouring a feast. The RVS community had further association with Bhakti Rasayana Sagar Swami: on Wednesday 8th May at Premananda Gaura dasa’s Nama hatta, on Sunday 11th May at the Temple, and on Monday 12th May at the RVS Sunday sanga. On Sunday 26th May, RVS cooked the Sunday Feast for the ISKCON-London community. Between the large Temple festivals, RVS members gathered for sadhu-sanga, katha and chanting on Sunday 19th May, 9th June and 23rd June. On Sunday 30th June, they organised a Japa Marathon. In July, RVS enjoyed the association of Mondakini devi dasi who was briefly visiting London. Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RussianVedicSociety/

spiritual mentorship system initiations In May, Barnaby Booth took his first initiation from Sivarama Swami. His new name is Bhakta Avatar dasa. His mentor is Jai Nitai dasa. In June, Olga Dorovko took her first initiation from Indradyumna Swami. Her new name is Manjari Gopika devi dasi. Her mentor is Jaga Mohini devi dasi. In July, Mina Patel from Bhakti Yoga Centre in Crawley took her first initiation from Bhakti Charu Swami. Her new name is Manmohini Gopi dasi. Her mentor is Chandravali devi dasi.
Interview with Manmohini Gopi dasi Manmohini Gopi dasi is a mentee of Chandravali devi dasi who is a mentor in the ISKCON-London Spiritual Mentorship System. Chandravali devi dasi specifically mentors devotees who are older in age and so would not ordinarily fit in or feel comfortable in some of the other groups that mainly have younger members. Bhava Bhakti devi dasi had a conversation with Manmohini Gopi dasi after her initiation: Bhava Bhakti devi dasi: Hare Krishna! Wow, so you finally did it! How do you feel after taking initiation? Manmohini Gopi dasi: I feel very happy because my past karma is burned up and I have taken my vows in front of my Guru Maharaja that I will follow four regulative principles and chant 16 rounds minimum. I have now taken a new birth with my new initiation name. I feel that I should become more humble and not get hurt if anyone says anything. Bhava Bhakti devi dasi: Really nice realisations, remind me how long have you been in ISKCON? Manmohini Gopi dasi: I have been in Krishna Consciousness since the last 14 years and will be until I die, I’ll never leave ISKCON. Bhava Bhakti devi dasi: Lovely, thank you. You have a beautiful name and here’s wishing you many, many years of spiritual happiness. 29
