In the 20th century, the commercial success of coconut and chicle growers created a new wave of interest in the area.
he tradition of hospitality in Cozumel did not originate in our time with modern tourism. It began hundreds of years ago, before the Europeans ever arrived. The island was the sanctuary of the Mayan goddess of fertility, Ixchel, and it was a major destination for religious pilgrimages.
The first hotels that opened between years 1924 to late 30’s were The Louvre,Yuri and Playa in 1938. However, the economic crisis of 1939, World War II in the early 40’s, and the post-war reconstruction put a damper on additional development.
From as far away as central Mexico and parts of Central America,the Mayan followers of Ixchel came to pray to this Goddess.
It was not until the late 1950s that Cozumel was discovered by tourists once again, initiating the boom that has made Cozumel an extremely important port not just in Mexico but in the world. With more than 2 million visitors per year,Cozumel is one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean.
On the 3 of May, 1518 the expedition leaded by Captain Don Juan de Grijalva discovered this Island giving the name of Santa Cruz because the catholic celebration of this day. During the Spanish colonial period,from the 16th to the 19th centuries,numerous visitors continued to arrive. However, many of them were not particularly welcome, as the island had become a base of operations for the many pirates and cutthroats that infested the Caribbean at that time.

La isla,santuario de la diosa maya de la fertilidad “Ixchel’’, era centro de peregrinaciones provenientes del centro del país,de toda la región maya y aún de América Central que venían a rendir culto a esta divinidad.

Días después,Cortés ordenó a su sacerdote oficiar la primera misa,en lo que ahora es territorio mexicano. Durante el periodo de la colonia española, del siglo XVI al XIX,la isla recibió frecuentes visitantes no muy gratos,éstos fueron los numerosos piratas y corsarios que durante esa época infestaron el Caribe y tuvieron en Cozumel una de sus bases de operación.
El 3 de mayo de 1518 una expedición española al mando del capitán Don Juan de Grijalva descubre la Isla, asignándole el nombre de Santa Cruz, en honor de la fiesta de la santa cruz celebrada ese día en el calendario cristiano.
Con el siglo XX y el auge del comercio de la copra y el chicle, dio principio en la isla el desarrollo de pequeños hoteles a partir de 1932, entre los que destacan los hoteles Louvre, Yuri, Playa y posteriormente el Mayalum. Sin embargo las crisis económicas de 1939 y posguerra mundial en 1946, impidieron un crecimiento sostenido.
Posteriormente, en febrero de 1519 arribó a las costas de la isla el conquistador de México el Capitán General Hernán Cortés para rescatar a dos náufragos prisioneros de los mayas,Gerónimo de Aguilar y Gonzalo Guerrero,éste último prefirió quedarse al lado de su

Punta Sur The ecological park called Punta Sur is located at the southernmost point of the island. Here nature shows its unity and diversity in the interaction of various elements like Colombia Lagoon,mangrove swamps,birds, reptiles,fish and plants. The Punta Sur Ecological Park is dedicated to the preservation of local flora and fauna. Tour the park´s museum,whose theme is the history of navigation around the island. There are beaches for swimming and organized excursions into the jungle.

El parque ecológico de Punta Sur está ubicado en el extremo sur de la isla de Cozumel y promueve la conservación de la flora y la fauna. Tiene un museo,en el cual se expone la historia de la navegación en el Caribe. Este parque cuenta con áreas para nadar y se organizan excursiones para observar la naturaleza. La historia de Cozumel está representada en el Museo de la Isla,este edificio fue el primer hotel de lujo,se inauguró en el año de 1936. Cinco décadas después, el Gobierno del Estado lo convirtió en lo que ahora es, abriendo 4 salas de exhibición que ofrecen a sus visitantes un viaje a través del pasado y el presente de la vida cotidiana y la vida marina de la isla.
The history of Cozumel is represented by its museum, which is located in the building that was originally the first luxury hotel on the island,opened in 1936. Four large exhibit rooms take residents and visitors into daily life on the island and in the waters around it,from the past to the present.

THE SACRED MAYAN JOURNEY
La travesía Sagrada Maya
T
he project of the Sacred Mayan Journey was founded with the purpose of recovering one of the most significant traditions of the ancient Mayan people of the region: the ritual journey of the Cozumel Channel to worshi p the Goddess IxChel. This tri p began days before in the marketplace, where they traded for the different objects that were to be offered to the goddess. Therefore,market days were great festivities for the valiant oarsmen who prepared to undertake the sacred crossing and obtain the special favor of fertility for all their people. The voyage is done in traditional Mayan canoes starting in Polé,today Xcaret,towards the island of Cozumel,as well as the return from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen (former Xamanhá part).
El proyecto de La Travesía Sagrada Maya comenzó en 2007 y se basa en el propósito de rescatar y recuperar una de las más significativas tradiciones de los mayas ancestrales de la región: La trayectoria ritual del Canal Cozumel para venerar a la diosa IxChel. Esta recreación revive el interés en la cultura maya y fortalece la identidad de los pobladores del área. Desde hace más de mil años,en estas tierras mayas se realizaba año con año el ritual de adoración a la diosa Ixchel, que iniciaba días antes en el mercado,sitio en el que se comercializaban los diferentes productos destinados a “la ofrenda” de la diosa. Eran pues días de fiesta donde valientes canoeros se preparaban para realizar la travesía sagrada y obtener para el pueblo entero los favores de la diosa fértil. En esta sagrada travesía, destacan dos lugares como puntos de partida y arribo de las travesías de los antiguos mayas: Polé (Xcaret) y Cozumel. Esta trayectoria se lleva a cabo en canoas mayas tradicionales partiendo de Polé,actualmente Xcaret,hacia la isla de Cozumel y de regreso a la costa de Playa del Carmen (antes Xamanhá).

I
t is located about 11 miles (18 km) off the east coast of the Yucatán. The island of Cozumel (in Mayan, Cuzamil, for “land of the swallows”) is the largest of the Mexican islands in the Caribbean Sea, as well as the most populated island in the country. Cozumel measures about 32 miles (52 km) from north to south,and almost 9 miles (14 km) from east to west. Like a major portion of the nearby Yucatan Peninsula,the island was one of the landmasses that emerged from the ocean in the latter part of the Pliocene Age. As a result, the base of the island is composed of marine sediment, frequently covered with fossilized shells and sea life. Its age is estimated at 16 million years. The island is very porous and aside from rain runoff,it has no surface lakes or fresh-water rivers. Like the peninsula,Cozumel has many underground rivers and ponds,known as Cenotes. Because of the incredible beauty of the caverns and tunnels carved out of the rock over the centuries,and their famous clear water,many Cenotes are considered to be ideal sites for diving and snorkeling.
Se localiza al Noroeste de la península de Yucatán separada por un canal de 18 km (11.25 millas) de ancho,con una superficie de poco mas de 500 Km2 ubicándose al extremo Oeste de las islas del Mar Caribe,Cozumel,(del maya Cuzamil) tierra de golondrinas,es la mayor de las islas mexicanas en el Mar Caribe,al mismo tiempo es también la más habitada del país. Los más conocidos atractivos de la isla de Cozumel son sus bellos arrecifes,numerosos y variados en cuanto a su formación,ubicación y fácil acceso. Se les considera parte importante dentro de la larga barrera coralina (segunda mayor del mundo) conocida como el Gran Arrecife Mesoamericano, que se extiende desde el norte de la Isla Contoy en la costa oriental de la Península de Yucatán,hasta el Golfo de Honduras en la América Central. Mide de Norte a Sur 52 Km. (32.5 millas) y de Este a Oeste a 14 Km. (8.7 millas). Al igual que la mayoría de la Península de Yucatán,su origen data del Plioceno, como parte del continente en esa última etapa de la edad Terciaria que emergieron del mar, por ello la base rocosa de la isla está compuesta de sedimentos marinos y con frecuencia en su parte exterior se aprecian incrustaciones fosilíferas. Su antigüedad se calcula en 16 millones de años. Cozumel se encuentra en plena zona tropical,su clima es cálido subhúmedo,con lluvias moderadas que se distribuyen a lo largo del año, marcando muy poca diferencia entre las estaciones húmeda y seca. La temperatura promedio es de 27° C, fluctuando desde los 20° C en invierno hasta los 32° C en verano. Un verdadero clima de agasajo para disfrutar al máximo tus vacaciones.
Due to its location, Cozumel is in the tropical zone. Its climate is hot and humid,and although there are rainy and dry seasons, there is occasionally rainfall year-round,making very little difference between the seasons. Average temperature all year round is 80° F (27° C) and the variation from winter to summer is 68° F (20°C) to 90° F (32° C). Great! Isn´t it?

THE WONDERFUL REEFS OF COZUMEL PARAÍSO BAJO. This coral barrier begins just past the entrance to Caleta Lagoon and runs north almost to the ferry pier. Its maximum depth is 50 feet and the current is moderate, running south to north. It is 20 to 30 yards wide and about a mile in length. The tallest coral heads are about 12 feet, and it is common to encounter all kinds of parrotfish here. Small caves and tunnels shape the reef, which abounds with a large variety of marine life. CHANKANAAB. Large coral mounds give this dive site its name “bolones”, which means big spheres. At a depth of 60 to 70 feet,these formations rise up to 25 feet from the white sandy bottom. Sponges, occasional small black coral trees and large grouper live inside the coral mounds,which are unique in the region.
YUCAB. Dives at this reef offer extraordinary flora and marine life at deep depths. More than a thousand coral formations of 60 to 80 feet cover this extensive,deep site,making it impossible to see it all on just one tank. The large variety of marine life includes, among others, brain,cactus and gallon corals,which are covered with hydroids, sponges snails and crustaceans. Fish watchers should bring along their fish guide, because this is an ideal place to observe many different species. It is a good idea to begin your dive at the beginning of this reef so you are able to fully enjoy its length and beauty. SAN FRANCISCO. The first part is a vertical wall with coral and large yellow tube sponges that hang down into the abyss. The depth here begins at 60 to 70 feet,with the majority of the dive at 120 feet. The walls rise slowly, resembling brilliant green grass, and sometimes large manta rays can be seen. The last section is like a mountain range riddled with tunnels,which go from 70 to 80 feet to a sandy platform at 40 feet. This section is considered the best part of San Francisco and is often compared to its famous neighbor,Santa Rosa Reef.
TORMENTOS. This reef is famous for its moray eels and groups,which hang around inspecting the dive groups. Depth varies from 60 feet at the sandy bottom to 35 feet at the highest point of the reef. Both beginning and advanced divers enjoy visiting this colorful habitat.

Los Maravillosos arrecifes de Cozumel PARAÍSO BAJO. Barrera coralina que empieza un poco después de salir de la laguna de caleta hacia el Norte y corre paralela a la costa hasta llegar casi al muelle Terminal Marítima del Sureste (TMS). La profundidad máxima es de 50 pies,la corriente es moderada de Sur a Norte,y el arrecife abarca de 20 a 30 metros de ancho por una milla de largo,con una altura que no sobrepasa los 4 metros y es común encontrar ahí a toda la familia de los peces loro. Pequeñas cuevas y túneles forman la estructura del arrecife,la vida marina es variada y abundante. CHANKANAAB. Grandes montículos de coral dan el nombre de “bolones’’ a este sitio de buceo. A una profundidad de 60 – 70 pies,estas formaciones se elevan del blanco fondo marino hasta los 25 pies y en su interior cuelgan esponjas,gorgonias y en algunos es posible encontrar pequeños árboles de coral negro. El área es extensa y también es común recibir aquí la visita de grandes meros que gustan de reposar en el interior de estas bolas de coral únicas de este tipo en la isla.

Más de una milla de formaciones de coral con una amplitud de 60 a 80 pies cubren este extenso y bajo lugar,haciéndolo imposible de recorrer con solo un tanque. La gran variedad del fondo marino incluye corales como los de cerebro,cactus,galón,y otros; están cubiertos parcialmente con hidroides, esponjas,gusanos,crustáceos etc. Se recomienda traer sus guías de peces a prueba de agua. Starting at a depth of 50 feet,the wall continues down for thousands of feet. Descending,cuts in the wall offer refuge from the strong pull of the current. Many caves harbor enormous grouper,delicate fans,gorgons and giant sponges. The average dive here is 80 feet.
SANTA ROSA. La pared de Santa Rosa es considerado uno de los mejores lugares de buceo en el área. Empezando a una profundidad de solo 50 pies, el arrecife cae a una gran profundidad. Al descender,cortadas en lo profundo de la pared ofrecen refugios del jalón de la corriente. Las muchas cuevas que se encuentran a lo largo de la pared ponen a la vista a grandes meros, suaves abanicos de gorgonia y grandes esponjas. El promedio de buceo aquí es de 80 pies.
PASO DEL CEDRAL. Covered with scattered portions of coral, the small Paso del Cedral site is an underwater community known for its green moray eels. They are quite docile and cooperative with local dive masters. The current here is moderate,with a maximum depth of 60 feet.

PALANCAR. The most famous dive site on the island, without a doubt, is the magnificent coral mountain known as Palancar. The incredible beauty of this site astounded the French oceanographer, Jacques Ives Cousteau, who visited the island in 1954. Before long,Cozumel began to establish its reputation as a worldclass dive site, which it still holds today. Diving Palancar is like flying through giant canyons of coral that drop to the depths of the ocean.

Es el arrecife más famoso desde que el oceanógrafo francés Jaques Cousteau visitó la isla en 1954 quedando admirado de la belleza de estos lugares,los cuales a partir de entonces son conocidos mundialmente y la isla de Cozumel se perfila a lo que es ahora,uno de los primeros destinos de buceo en el ámbito internacional. Bucear en Palancar es como volar en medio de estos gigantescos cañones de coral que caen verticales hacia las profundidades del abismo.
PUNTA SUR. Situated between the reefs of Colombia and Maracaibo, the reef ecosystem named Punta Sur is one of the deepest and most impressive dives in Cozumel. Here exists the famous Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat),where the diver enters the mouth of a cave at only 50 feet and exits into the abyss at 130 feet. The Punta Sur reefs are less visited than others but very worthwhile,as the flora are more brilliant and colorful than elsewhere. Dive depth here is 60 to 70 feet in the higher part of the ranges,and 90 to 110 feet at the sandy bottom.

Situado entre los arrecifes de Colombia y Maracaibo,el ecosistema arrecifal llamado punta sur,es sin duda uno de los buceos más profundos e impresionantes en la Isla de Cozumel,aquí existe la famosa Garganta del Diablo donde el buzo se introduce a la boca de una cueva a solo 50 pies de profundidad y sale al abismo de 130 pies. Los arrecifes de Punta sur,por ser menos visitados que otros, se encuentran en un estado más colorido y brillante en su flora marina,La profundidad para bucear aquí es de 60-70 pies en la parte alta de las grandes cordilleras y 90-110 en el fondo arenoso.

Cozumel es el escenario de la presencia de los hombres y de las mujeres con mayor resistencia física y mental en el mundo; todos,con el firme propósito de ganar el IRONMAN Cozumel. Natación, ciclismo y carrera son las especialidades deportivas,mismas que exigen la máxima capacidad del ser humano,anteponiendo una preparación de años para lograr unas horas de gloria.
The sporting events are: Swimming,biking and running. Activities that demand a big capacity from the competitor,who spends years of training in order to achieve a few hours of glory,pride and power. The tourist paradise of the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel,got much attention from one the highest impact competition in the world. Ironman Cozumel, 2012 exceeded the expectations for the number of competitors, which was two thousand athletes from 61 different countries. They swam 3.8 km,biked 180 km and ran 42.2 km, to prove that they are the real human beings made of iron.
Ironman Cozumel, celebrado en el mes de Noviembre,superó las expectativas de inscri pción, tomando en cuenta que más de dos mil 500 atletas de 61 países manifestaron su interés para nadar 3.8 kilómetros, andar en bicicleta 180 kilómetros y correr 42.2 kilómetros. En pocas palabras,para demostrar que son verdaderos seres humanos de acero.
In 2009, the year of the first Ironman, all the athletes discovered a beautiful setting for their competition to take place. The competitors enjoyed their stay on the island, the Mayans called,“Island of Swallows”.

CULTURE AND TRADITIONS CARNAVAL: Generally held in February, the dates of Carnaval depend on the date of Easter and change every year. Dating back to the last century,Carnival has deep roots in the community and everyone in town partici pates,filling the streets, squares, restaurants and bars. Costumed groups of all ages dance and perform in the streets and in the grand parade of floats, which travels along the main street of town for all to enjoy. EL CEDRAL: A tradition for 150 years, this fair is held the first week of May every year in Cedral, the old island settlement. It originated with the Yucatan War of the Castes. A survivor of the war promised that he and his descendants would honor the Cruz,or cross,for all their lives. It has evolved into a country fair, preserving its commercial,agricultural and cultural roots in the Mayan tradition. Particularly notable are the traditional dances, such as “Head of the Boar” and “Ribbons”,which are performed on May 3,the feast day of Santa Cruz. INDEPENDENCE DAY: September is considered the Nation´s month. On the 15th the traditional scream of Viva México! All over the country can be heard thru the City Halls. Here,is a big celebration with famous artists,fair and fire works. SAN MIGUEL: Incorporating both religious and popular traditions, the feast day of the patron saint of the city of San Miguel is in September.

DAY OF THE DEAD: Celebrated at the beginning of November,this feast day is celebrated by the offering of favorite foods to dead family members and friends. Elaborate altars are prepared with food, artwork, photos and multicolored candles. NAVIDAD – CHRISTMAS: Precede by many parties known as “Posadas”, the Christmas season offers children singing carols in the square and neighborhoods, and dazzling lights and decorations on houses and streets throughout town.
Cultura y Tradiciones CARNAVAL: Tradición iniciada en el siglo pasado, la fecha de su celebración varia de acuerdo al inicio de la cuaresma del calendario católico y tiene lugar generalmente en el mes de febrero. Su honda raíz en la comunidad contagia a todos los habitantes a partici par en ella,haciendo de calles y plazas, salas de diversión. Son especialmente notables los grupos con disfraces conocidos como comparsas, bailando por las calles,integrados por gente de todas las edades y desde luego, está el desfile princi pal durante 3 días donde intervienen comparsas y carros alegóricos a lo largo del malecón de la isla. LA FIESTA DEL CEDRAL O FIESTA DE LA SANTA CRUZ: Se celebra en los primeros días del mes de Mayo en el poblado de El Cedral. Con 150 años de llevarse a cabo ,tuvo su origen en la llamada Guerra de Castas en Yucatán y se debe a la promesa de un sobreviviente que juró homenajear la Cruz durante toda su vida y las de sus descendientes. Transformada ahora en feria de tradición cultural,política,comercial,agrícola y ganadera,guarda todavía la tradición de los bailes ancestrales como el de “La Cabeza de Cochino” y “Las Cintas” que se presentan en la tarde de día 3 de Mayo,día de la Santa Cruz. FIESTA DE INDEPENDENCIA: Septiembre se considera el mes patrio en México,nuestra Independencia se celebra con el tradicional grito de ¡Viva México! el día 15 por la noche en toda la República a través de los ayuntamientos.

En Cozumel se celebra a lo grande con música y artistas famosos,feria y verbena popular enmarcado con fuegos pirotécnicos multicolores. FIESTA DE SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL: Se efectúa en honor del Santo Patrono del pueblo y tiene lugar el 29 de Septiembre, encuadra en celebraciones religiosas y populares. FIESTA DE DÍA DE MUERTOS: Celebrada a princi pios de Noviembre y es un homenaje con rezos y ofrendas de comida tradicional dedicados a los muertos. Son notables los “Altares de Muertos compuestos de arte popular, alimentos y velas de colores. NAVIDAD: Es precedida por las Posadas,tradición heredada de España,se celebra en el seno familiar del 24 de Diciembre, se adornan las calles y avenidas con luces y el cántico de los niños entonando ”La Rama”.

ike that of all tropical regions, Cozumel´s plant life is varied and plentiful. The trees reach a maximum of 10 mts in height. Predominant among them are sapodilla,quebracho, ceiba, chechen, huaya and caracolillo, as well as shrubs like icaco and resinosa. In the marshy areas grow tasiste, red mangrove, white mangrove and botoncillo.
Como toda vegetación tropical, la de Cozumel es variada y abundante. En el aspecto silvestre la altura máxima de los árboles no sobrepasan los 10 mts. y predominan entre ellos el zapote,el jabín,el ramón,la ceiba,el chit,el chechén,la huaya y el caracolillo, también arbustos como el icaco y la resinosa. En las franjas pantanosas crece el tasiste,el mangle rojo,el mangle blanco y el botoncillo.
The plants generally grown in the tropics,like pineapples,mamey,mango,bananas,oranges,and lemons, were once widely cultivated. But like other traditional crops,such as corn beans,squash,chiles,and sweet potatoes, the production has diminished in recent years, as more people abandon the countryside for more lucrative jobs in the tourist sector.
Las plantas cultivables propias del trópico como la piña,el mamey,el mango,la sandía,el plátano,la naranja y el limón se dan generosamente,pero en los últimos años al igual que los cultivos tradicionales del campo,como el maíz,fríjol,calabaza,chile,camote, etc., se están dejando en el abandono, por que los campesinos encuentran más redituables otras actividades tales como las del sector turístico. Lo mismo puede decirse de las hortalizas y las flores, que se dan bien pero casi no son cultivadas.
The same can be said about flowers and other tropical; they grow all over the island but are not specifically cultivated. Wildlife also bounds,especially since hunting has been prohibited in recent years. The jungle is inhabited by rabbits,badgers,raccoons,armadillos, iguanas,wild boars and,occasionally,deer. The indigenous snakes are not poisonous. Crocodiles live only in the lagoons and mangroves. There are no big cats on the island.

Existe una nutrida variedad de aves que habitan en la isla todo el año y algunas otras que emigran dependiendo de la época del año, como ejemplo citamos algunos: las águilas pescadoras, pelicanos, chocolateras, flamencos, golondrinas, fragatas, colibríes, etc. La fauna silvestre, sometida años atrás por la cacería (ahora prohibida) es notable aún y se pueden ver en la selva todavía liebres, iguanas,tejones,mapaches,armadillos,tepezcuintles, jabalíes y ocasionalmente venados. Los lagartos habitan en las lagunas y manglares. A diferencia del continente, en Cozumel, las serpientes no son venenosas y no hay felinos salvajes.
