I
like to think of myself as a pretty private person. On any given day, I don’t share too much of my personal life with any more than 364 of my closest friends on Facebook. But these past few months have been pretty amazing in my life and I feel like sharing ... I have spent the better part of my daughter’s life as a full-time (and then some) working, single Mom, dating here and there. I have always told myself my life is fulfilled - complete. I have Ella and we are healthy and happy, what more do we need? Enter B.M. This man is amazing. We met online (yes, it does work!) He and I are like two peas in a pod. He has been a single father of two boys for the last four years. He works long hours, coaches his kids lacrosse, cares for his sister, and still finds time to spend with Ella and I. He is so wonderful with her. My biggest fear has always been introducing the ‘boyfriend’ to my daughter. Will they get along? How will she feel to share her Mamma? When does the stepdad role play in? Will our Brady Bunch get-up work? Over the next few issues, you will notice a section dedicated to this, to follow our journey along, the good and the bad, the positives and the negatives. Not every family is your typical Mom, Dad, son, daughter anymore. In the 21st century, my family is becoming more and more uncommon. We welcome your feedback, your tips and tricks to making the transition with new spouses easy peasy lemon squeezy (that’s a little Ella talk for you!).

Summer Camp Survival Guide:
Ann Douglas
Don’t let bedwetting prevent your child from enjoying summer camp
Y
our daughter is heading off to summer camp. She should be looking forward to making new friends and trying new activities, like the ropes-course that this camp is famous for, but the only thing that is on her mind is what could happen in the middle of the night, after campfire sing-songs and ghost stories. What if she wakes up in the middle of the night and discovers that her sleeping bag is wet? A child who has a problem with bedwetting does a lot of thinking and worrying; a lot of planning and avoiding. Many decide to forgo the summer camp experience entirely, for fear of having their secret discovered. It is one thing, after all, to wet your bed when you are at home in your own bedroom. It is quite another to wake up in a wet sleeping bag in a tent full of other campers. And yet bedwetting is an all-too-common experience for Canadian kids: • More than 500,000 Canadian children aged five years and older struggle with bedwetting and, among those over the age of seven, the condition is twice as common in boys as it is in girls.
4 / Island Child Magazine / www.islandchildmag.com / summer 2011
• Bedwetting tends to run in families: if both parents wet the bed when they were young, there is an 80% chance their child will wet the bed; if only one parent wet the bed, there is a 50% chance; and if neither parent wet the bed, there is just a 15% chance. What makes bedwetting a particularly painful and isolating experience for those children who experience it is the fact that many adults fail to understand that bedwetting is a medical condition - that a child who wets the bed cannot control the bedwetting simply by trying harder or wanting the bed to stay dry. If that were the case, there would hardly be any wet beds at all. Kids who struggle with bedwetting want nothing more than to stay dry. Unfortunately, their bodies are not ready to stay dry quite yet. Typically, once children achieve daytime dryness, nighttime dryness follows soon after. But for some kids, it takes a little longer. So what can you do to help your child in the meantime: if she is still wetting the bed and she would like to go to summer camp? Set up an appointment with your child’s doctor Your child’s doctor will take a complete medical history, conduct a thorough physical examination, and test a sample of your child’s urine. This will allow the doctor to rule out any other medical issues that could result in bedwetting, such as urinary tract infections, problems with the urinary tract, diabetes, sleep apnea, and constipation. Once a diagnosis has been reached, your child’s doctor will be able to help you come up with a plan for minimizing the impact of bedwetting on your child’s summer camp experience.
A treatment for bedwetting will be recommended, based on the type and severity of your child’s symptoms. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments are available. One of the treatments your child’s doctor might suggest is DDAVP® Melt, a product which treats the root causes of bedwetting by limiting nighttime urine production. (The DDAVP® Melt formulation dissolves quickly under the tongue without the need to consume water, eliminating the need for children to drink fluids or to swallow a tablet at bedtime.) Talk to the summer camp director Find out how camp staff typically deal with incidents of bedwetting at camp and talk about ways you would like the staff to support your child should an incident occur during her time at camp. Suggest that the camp minimize the amount of fluid your child consumes right before bedtime, that your child avoid drinks with caffeine (a diuretic) throughout the day, and that the camp staff encourage your child to use the bathroom right before bedtime. Let the camp director know that your doctor has prescribed DDAVP® Melt for your child. Reassure your child Let your child know that she is not the only child in this situation: that other kids will be heading off to camp with the same worry about bedwetting as she has. Reassure her DDAVP® Melt has been prescribed for her to minimize the risk of an accident at camp.
Let her know that it is important to go to the bathroom before she goes to bed and she should minimize her pre-bedtime drinks. Make sure she has a flashlight (plus spare batteries) so that she can find her way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Tell her what to do in the event that she has an accident: she simply needs to let a camp counselor know and they will ensure that her sleeping bag or the bedding on her bunk gets washed during the day. Finally, congratulate yourself and your (soon-to-be) happy camper for going ahead with the summer camp plans. By tackling the bedwetting issue head-on, you’re ensuring that your child has the opportunity to enjoy the stuff of which summer camp memories are made. __________________________________________________ Ann Douglas is an award-winning writer and the author of over 27 books, including the bestselling The Mother of All Pregnancy Books. www.having-a-baby.com

Baby Wear your Sunglasses: Are your Child’s Eyes Sun-protected?
Y
our child’s vision is precious – are their eyes sunprotected?
We love the sun, but the sun can be harmful to our eyes. Did you know that you get more ultraviolet (UV) exposure by the time you’re 18 than during the rest of your life? Studies show that children receive more UV to the back of their eyes than adults. While parents are concerned about their own eye protection, they often forget about their children’s eyes. No one likes to think about future risks, but without proper protection, prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays will increase their chances of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. UV rays come from direct sunlight as well as from reflections off water, sand and snow. Children typically spend more time in the sun than adults, so whether your kids are swimming in the backyard pool or building sand castles at the beach, they depend on you to keep their vision safe. Symptoms of UV damage – eye redness, swelling, watering and sensitivity to light – can occur from intense short exposure. More importantly prolonged UV exposure can lead to premature cataracts and macular degeneration later on in life. For this reason, protect your children’s eye health in their everyday activities.
Fashion and Function: what you need to know about children’s sunglasses Whether they are the latest fashion or an inexpensive spare pair of shades for wearing to the beach on a summer day, children’s sunglasses need to be 100% UVA and UVB protected. To encourage your child to wear sunglasses: • Let your child be involved in the selection process. Helping to choose the style and colour will go a long way to encouraging the wear of their own UV protected sunglasses • Model the behaviour yourself – be sun smart and wear your own UV protected sunglasses • Ask your optometrist for assistance is selecting the right size sunglasses for your child. They can help quickly narrow the options to frames most suitable to the size and shape of your child’s face, and ensure that the chosen frames are kid durable. They will also ensure the correct fit of the sunglasses. Sunglasses should not be too tight or pinch at the temples or behind the ears or slip down your child’s nose; they should be comfortable for your child to wear! _________________________________________________ Dr. Carla Clarke is an Optometrist at South Cowichan Eyecare in the Valleyview Centre and Chemainus Family Eyecare.

Food & Drinks Picnic sandwiches, hotdog BBQ, fruit kabobs, lemonade and punch is a sure hit. Serve your snacks, such as fish crackers or chips, in sand buckets and use the shovels to serve salads. Serve drinks with an umbrella. If the party is at your home, set up an ice cream cart with a table, cones, 2 or 3 flavours of ice cream at one end and a variety of toppings at the other. Guests can ‘order’ their scoops from an adult, then move down the table to add their toppings. Fun & Games Water games are a sure way to keep everyone cool, laughing and having fun. Squirt Gun Tag: he who is ‘it’ has the squirt gun. When you get wet, you become ‘it’. Flipper Race: with the guests still in their teams, first racer puts flippers on, runs to end and back then gives flippers to next in line. Obstacle Course: sprinkler, hose, hula hoops and beach balls. Jump in and out of the hoops, over balls and hose then through the sprinkler. Finish up with a water balloon toss. Crafts: have your guests decorate flip flops, beach balls, fabric tote bags or tee shirts. Goody Bags Hand out sand buckets & shovels, beach balls, squirt guns, beach towel & water bottle. _________________________________________________ Kristina Quinn moved to Victoria in 2003 to start the Victoria franchise of Par-T-Perfect after assisting with the start up of the first franchise in 2001. Family Vacations:
T
hinking back to our annual family vacation road trips, I cannot help but smile. I remember them as exciting journeys with fun stops to visit family on the way to our final destination. When I talk to my parents about these trips, they tell a completely different story. Apparently my brother and I fought constantly and since we did not have to wear seatbelts way back then, we had the advantage of moving freely about the car. There was yelling, crying, motion sickness, nosebleeds and even the odd piece of bubble gum lodged into someone’s hair. Many cars now have DVD players onboard that kids can watch their favorite shows on while the kilometres race by. There are a multitude of handheld devices available that permit each family member to pass the time in an electronic solitude. This is not the true spirit of a road trip. Set a goal on your next trip to have everyone unplugged for at least half of the travel time. Take this time to reconnect with your family, find out what everyone’s favorite colour is, what’s the worst meal you ever ate, what’s the best thing about being (insert age). You might be surprised at what you learn! Here are a few tips that will make your next road trip a success.
Make sure that you do maintenance on your car; check the fluids, the air pressure in your tires and update any maps or navigation systems that you might need.
Carmen Scott
Try to drive in little or no traffic for at least part of the journey. Start early in the morning or late in the day, and always make sure that everyone has their own pillow and blanket. Car snacks are a road trip must-have; but choosing the right kind is imperative. Skip anything that is gooey, sticky or messy. Pack items such as juice boxes, fruit, cheese, nuts and granola bars. Bring a small cooler, wet wipes, required medicine, paper towels, and trash bags. Make sure to pack cell phones, game-boys, cameras and computers and remember to bring a charger for each of them. Have each child pack their own small bag of toys, crafts, books, and include a change of clothes. One of my favourite tips for travelling in the car is to bring a metal cookie sheet for each child. These make a great lap table for a child during car trips. It’s a food tray for lunch, and doubles as a writing or coloring desk (the raised edges prevent items from rolling off). It is an instant play table for all sorts of magnetic toys and games. Remember that road trips will never go as planned, so schedule frequent stops, have everyone get out of the car to stretch their legs, hydrate and spend a few minutes getting rid of energy. Even though this will add extra time to your journey, you never know what adventure you and your family might find at the next unplanned pit stop.

My Noisy Boys Designs
M
y Noisy Boys Designs is the creation of Cowichan Valley designer Caroline Storie. Mother to one Noisy Boy and wife to another. Caroline had always worked with textiles as a fabric technologist in the UK, but when she immigrated to Canada she knew she wanted to do something more creative and fun. When her son was born in 2008, she made her first block print, which was the robot. She used this to make the curtains for his room because there didn’t seem to be many cool designs out there for boys (besides tools, which she didn’t want to have ALL the time!). She then started making other simple prints like trucks, rockets, elephants, houses, flowers and hearts for friends, which she would sew into what has now become her signature product - the wall flag. These flags are great for the nursery, playroom or your own themed birthday. They make a wonderfully unique, eco-friendly baby shower gift and as the process of making a stamp for the block print is relatively simple. Caroline can custom make any design, wording or colour you would like at no extra charge.
Everything is made by hand, the fabrics she uses are ecofriendly and the ink is a nontoxic water-based product so you know you are buying something that is both funky and sweet to the environment. You can see Caroline’s products on etsy at www.mynoisyboys.etsy.com. Caroline also updates her facebook page for shows and market drop-ins that she will be doing in the year. If any retailer is interested in becoming a stockist for My Noisy Boys Designs they can contact Caroline directly at mynoisyboys@shaw.ca.
The products My Noisy Boys Designs now offers has expanded to child-sized tote bags, fabric buckets, cushions, party goody bags, cards, table linens and tea towels.

Nearby Gray, Scarlett and Azure have commandeered the swings while Sienna waits for a turn. In the sandbox, Zander hits Serenity on the head with a stick but he claims she hit him first. Now that I am pregnant, I listen to the names people give their children. The Internet swells with advice and the tabloid aisle is a big source of inspiration. While out with my two boys, I keep my ears open. Naming baby number three is difficult among the sea of new choices but even the unique seems to have become commonplace. So what is a mother to do when it comes to finding an original name? Especially when Mercedes, Lexus and Armani have to use their last initial in preschool - as do Caitlin, Caitlyn, Kaitlin and Kaitlyn. Well, much to their mothers’ horror, they all ended up in the same classroom so God help their Kindergarten teacher! New parents use ‘Jaxson’ instead of Jackson. They skip Amelia and choose ‘Emilia’. Don’t make the mistake of using Jason because in 2011, it is most certainly ‘Jayson’. As a note, it’s Conor with one ‘n’ not two, just in case you were wondering. Noah was once the guy with the Ark, not the kid who chews crayons. And Apple was once a computer company and even before that Red Delicious and Golden.

A generation whose parents named them James, Michelle, Nicole and Kimberly have decided that their babies will go by Homer, Zuma, Seraphina and Liberty. So in making a decision on what to name our daughter, the new baby name books, Internet sites and magazines are very little help. The unique names are already used up. There has to be something else. Last week, at a Greek diner, I think we made a decision. No, it didn’t come from the waitress’s name tag or the back of a menu. It came to us out of the blue with no need for us to Google the spelling. A stroke of genius! And so simple it wouldn’t need to be repeated! Unique? Well, I’ve haven’t heard it uttered on a playground for at least a twenty mile radius. Drop the Props:
Desiree Cluff Setting your baby up for healthy sleeping habits
W
e want the best for our babies. We buy organic food, we make sure their mattress is safe, that their bottles don’t have BPAs, and that their shoes are good for their feet. Many families of young children are missing one key ingredient in wellness - quality sleep! Poor sleeping habits take their toll on both children and their parents. Research is showing that poor sleep habits can last way beyond babyhood. Studies from the American Academy of Sleep indicate that almost 14% of grade-school kids are still getting their parents up in the night. Researchers there are linking insufficient sleep with many problems, including poor performance at work, obesity, diabetes, excessive risk-taking behavior, and heart disease. Setting up your child for healthy sleep habits can be stressful. With loads of textbooks giving you an overload of information, some of it contradictory, figuring out what is the best solution to help your child to sleep is not easy. There are also the personal experts in your life: your sister who swears by the vibrating bouncy chair on the kitchen counter with the hood fan on medium, your mother doesn’t believe in crying so she has your baby rocking, pacing and bouncing until she’s sound asleep and then placing her ever so carefully into her crib as not to wake her, and your best friend who is co-sleeping with her six month old and is getting some sleep, but her husband has been banished to the couch for the last six months.
1) Be consistent. Create a routine. We are all creatures of habit and love to know what is happening next. 2) The less vices the better. Soothers, bouncy chairs on vibrate, the vacuum cleaner running, or worse ... YOU! A great swaddle might do the trick. 3) Give baby independent time. Supervised time that they learn to be alone, this makes being alone in bed a breeze. 4) Less is more. No stuffies, mobiles, toys, or lights. Bedtime and playtime should seem different. 5) When you need to feed or change baby at night, again, do so quietly, without interaction, and keep lights low; it is not play time. 6) You are a great parent! Remember that and do not let the over eager “experts” in your life make you feel differently. 7) Get dad involved. Your baby can smell your milk. Let dad go in and do the nighttime soothing; it is a great bonding time that is so special. _________________________________________________
Some tried and true sleep tips are shared here that will set your child up for healthy long-term sleep habits, and they do not include the “props” mentioned above that do get your child to sleep but are really only a quick fix, and will later cause problems.
Desiree Cluff is a sleep and behavioural consultant specializing in babies and children. Her satisfied clients (well rested mamas!) claim she possesses magic pixie dust that she throws on their screaming and sleepless babies transforming them to great sleepers, sleeping 12-hour nights.

Life is No Fairytale:
hen I was growing up in suburban Dallas, Texas, I lived on Cinderella Lane. My best friend lived on Snow White Circle. No, really! The entire neighborhood was called Wonderland. Like many little girls, we dreamed of handsome princes and white horses, rides into the sunset, and living happily ever after. I have wondered on occasion if my childhood address predisposed me to be disappointed with the realities of life. When you spend your formative years in a place called Wonderland, where is there to go from there? As a child, I would button my powder blue poncho around my head and pretend that it was long, Rapunzel-like hair. I eventually had to accept the harsh reality that my blue hair was not enough to catch a prince and there was no such thing as a real glass slipper. Regardless of my address, and whether or not my house was made out of straw, twigs or bricks, I didn’t grow up to be a fairy princess. Life had a different plan for me. I grew up to be a marketing executive and a working mom. Ironically, one of my early jobs put me right back into a world that was populated with several make believe characters.
Lauren Cassel Brownell As the marketing director for a regional shopping center, I was responsible for overseeing the set-up and staffing of Santa’s Village during the holiday season. Who knew that you could go to your local staffing agency and ask for elves, Santa looka-likes and people who didn’t mind dressing up as reindeer? I have had several jobs since then. Like Goldilock’s chairs, some were too small and some were too big. Luckily, I have finally found one that is just right! I also found a handsome prince. We bought a little castle on a hill and together we are raising a little prince and princess of our own. My daughter loves to pretend she has long Rapunzel hair just like I used to do and she loves to play dress up and pretend my high heels are glass slippers. But she is also aware that we modern day princesses can have successful careers and still be great moms. I grew up in Wonderland, but I wouldn’t trade my life for any fairytale. __________________________________________________ Lauren Cassel Brownell is Director of Marketing for a university. She is the author of the book “Zen and the Art of Housekeeping: The Path to Finding Meaning in Your Cleaning” and many articles and essays.

Take Safety Outdoors: Pamela Zwicky
t’s that time of year to swing open the windows, sit and relax on the deck, and fire up the BBQ. Ahhh summer is in the air! We all want to enjoy our time outside as safely as possible, so for those families with ‘little movers’, that means baby-proofing high traffic areas. If you have a deck, consider a banister guard/deck rails and either a play den or hardware-mounted safety gate that will protect toddlers from the stairs. To safety-proof the BBQ are, consider a dual purpose Hearthgate that can mount around the grill in summer or the fireplace in the winter. Window safety is already an issue in BC. Remember to have a window lock in place or a protective mesh guard, as junior loves to lean or climb to the window to say hello to the neighbor.
Out in the garden, be mindful of the plants that you have. Take note and make sure there is nothing poisonous that can easily be pulled out if your little one wants to help weed with you. Children love playing in the sun. It is very important to protect babies and children from UV radiation. A child’s risk of getting skin cancer as an adult goes up dramatically each time he or she gets a tan or sunburn. Babies younger than six months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight. Their delicate skin is too sensitive for sunscreen lotions, and babies are more likely than adults to absorb chemicals into their skin. A baby tent is a great companion at the beach in a shady spot as this protective travel tent/bed offer UV protection while baby naps. Enjoy your summer safely! _________________________________________________ Pamela Zwicky is with the Babyproofit team in Victoria. All the safety products mentioned here can be found online at www.babyproofit.ca, where shipping is always free and products are HST exempt.

A
for a Cloth Diaper Subsidy
group of local Victoria Moms, passionate about the environment and the effects of disposable diapers in our landfills, are lobbying the CRD for a cash rebate subsidy for cloth diapering families. Many Canadian municipalities currently have this subsidy available. The women behind the petition have spent countless hours researching the various types of subsidies available in preparation of bringing a solid case forward to the CRD. One of the key components to the subsidy is the stipulation that it must be used at a local cloth diaper retailer in the CRD. This way parents are supporting local businesses. By supporting the local economy, parents can ensure they are purchasing diapers from manufacturers who abide by the guidelines set out by Health Canada for hygiene. Recent trends demonstrate that the business of cloth diapering is rapidly expanding and retailers, manufacturers, and diaper services are now organized as a trade with the Real Diaper Industry Association, www.realdiaperindustry.org. We need to let our government know that we are a growing group of educated and motivated advocates for cloth diapering who want environmentally responsible choices to be recognized. You can support the campaign by liking their page on Facebook or by visiting the following websites and stores to sign a petition: www.babybellhop.com, www.abbyspsouts.com, Hip Baby – 104a Johnson Street, Victoria BC.
