"Nantucket! Take out your map and look at it. See what a real corner of the world it occupies; how it stands there, away off shore, more lonely than the Eddystone lighthouse. Look at it a mere hillock, and elbow of sand; all beach, without a background."
MELVILLE as written in Moby Dick
TRANSPORTATION
Traveling to Nantucket can be a beautiful journey, but will made even smoother with a little advanced planning. Year-round, but particularly in the high season, June through September, it is advisable to make ferry, plane or car rental reservations well in advance of your arrival. If you're considering bringing a vehicle with you, The Steamship Authority's advanced auto reservations for the summer open up in mid-January. Island weather, especially fog and wind, throughout the year often impact ferry and plane schedules, so keep an eye on weather conditions!
BY SEA
There are two companies operating the Hyannis-Nantucket route Both Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority offer fast ferries, which get you to Nantucket in one hour The Steamship Authority also offers the "slow boat" options which also transport vehicles Freedom Cruises also offers ferry services between Nantucket-Harwich and Seastreak offers routes between Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, New Bedford and New York/New Jersey.
BY AIR
There are many commerical and charter flights available to Nantucket departing from Boston, JFK, Westchester County, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard and New Bedford and more. The code for Nantucket Memorial Airport is the famous "ACK".

BEACHES
With a patch of sand for every mood, style and situation, we guarantee that finding a favorite beach for your perfect Nantucket summer day will be a breeze. You can help preserve the beauty of the island by cleaning up your litter and always be mindful of private property by staying within designated entry points.
NORTH SHORE
BEACHES HERE ARE PROTECTED BY THE NANTUCKET SOUND AND AS A RESULT, THE WATER IS WARMER AND MORE CALM
JETTIES BEACH
An easy walk or bike ride from town makes the Jetties an extremely popular summer spot, especially for families. There's plenty of amusement for the kids: volleyball nets, tennis courts, a playground, sailing/swimming lessons A casual restaurant, The Sandbar, and changing rooms with showers are available and it's the prized location of the Boston Pops annual summer concert or for fireworks on 4th of July
CHILDREN'S BEACH
As the name suggests, the shallow, wave-free waters make this a perfect beach for young children Other activities include: dance and yoga for kids, tie-dye classes and concert series
BRANT POINT
This patch of sand is a great spot to watch the boats coming and going from the harbor. Bring your camera along to snap a shot with the iconic Brant Point Lighthouse. Wading knee deep in the water to cool off will be fun, but swimming is not recommended due to the heavy boat traffic and harbor currents.
STEPS BEACH
We recommend grabbing a sandwich at Something Natural before visiting this beach! In late July/August visit here in the evening to see glow-inthe-dark jelly fish. Enjoy the views as you descend the long "steps" staircase to this pleasantly uncrowded beach.
40TH POLE
Drive with a town beach permit or walk onto this great spot for families & fishing Although there are no lifeguards on duty, this beach, nicknamed "the bathtub" for its warm waters is ideal for young children and anyone looking for a calm swim
DIONIS BEACH
Located along Nantucket Sound, this beach is the perfect spot for picnics, swimming and activities with young children. There are lifeguards, showers and restrooms, and some parking. If you're up for it, the beach is easily accessible via the three mile Madaket bike path to Eel Point Road.
SOUTH SHORE
BEACHES HERE FACE THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AND SEE LARGER WAVES, STRONGER CURRENTS AND COOLER WATER YOU MIGHT EVEN CATCH SIGHT OF WHALES OFFSHORE
SURFSIDE
During summer months, a shuttle regularly leaves town, otherwise, this stretch of sand can be accessed by Surfside Road or bike path It's also one of the most popular beaches in Nantucket, making it great for families with food, restroom facilities and a perfect spot for games, picnics and surfcasting.
NOBADEER
This beach is a favorite among the younger crowd for its young social scene An aviation lover will also enjoy watching planes fly in and out of ACK airport
FISHERMAN'S BEACH
In between Surfside and Nobadeer, a small parking lot provides an easy access to this walk-on beach. This unguarded stretch of sand is great for all ages with plenty of sand to spread out and surf to play in for a quick visit or for a whole day.
MIACOMET BEACH
This lifeguarded beach at the end of Miacomet Road afford visitors with sights of heavy surf beach and the beautiful Miacomet Pond Strong swimmers will enjoy the water here and sunsets will provide timeless memories
TOM NEVERS BEACH
This is an ideal spot for quiet enjoyment, beach walks, surfing and fishing There are no lifeguards and no restrooms available There is also a playground and a abundant parking.
CISCO
Surfers and water sport enthusiasts flock to this spot enjoying the swells and ease of access. Watch the little ones in the water as the currents can be extremely strong. It is home to one of the Island's best surf schools and has boards, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards available for rent. Food trucks are regularly set up for business here and you can always pop into Cisco Brewery or 167 Raw on your way home for provisions.
LADIES BEACH
A quiet stretch of sand which is a favorite of locals is found on the southwestern edge of the island Enjoy a ti di t d j f B tl tt
EAST SHORE
BEACHES HERE FACE THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AND SEE VARIABLE WAVE ACTION DEPENDING ON THE OCEAN FLOOR. SUNRISES ARE SPECTACULAR.
SIASCONSET
This charming beach is worth the drive from town and its mellow atmosphere is great to take a stroll or a quick dip You could take the NRTA shuttle or go for a bike ride of about six miles We definitely recommend it for early risers looking to catch a beautiful sunrise.
GREAT POINT/WAUWINET
One of the most unique natural places to visit on the island. Obtain a beach sticker from the Trustees of the Reservation (day or seasonal passes available), put your SUV or Truck in 4 wheel drive and leisurely ride up the outside beach all the way to Great Point Lighthouse Watch the seals play in the water or keep your eyes peeled for endangered and unique birds Take your picnic dinner and toast a brilliant sunset from in front of the lighthouse with family and friends
QUIDNET
Located next to Sesachacha Pond, seen on the photo below, savor spectacular sunrises from this secluded beach. This beach has mostly calm waters and it is a quick place to cool off.
WEST SHORE
BEACHES ON THIS SIDE OF THE ISLAND HAVE HEAVY SURF AND MAJESTIC SUNSETS
MADAKET BEACH
Surfing and sunsets are abundant here A perfect spot for a picnic while enjoying an incredible sunset
SMITH'S POINT BEACH
This is a rare charmer that offers both a north-facing (calm) and southfacing (waves) beach. When conditions allow, you may be able to drive on (with a town beach permit) or just enjoy a secluded walk or a beach run It's also dog-friendly, but be aware of nesting plovers in the dunes
POCOMO
Inside the harbor you will find that this beach is great for kayaking or windsurfing. Shallow, warm and calm waters are perfect for families. There is a parking lot, but no lifeguards.
