It’s not just the place where food lives but a place that hosts many a family dinner or summer bbq or holiday party. Regardless of your cooking skills your kitchen welcomes you with open arms. This month we’re celebrating the Kitchen. Become the Perfect Holiday Guest Expert Advice from Lindo’s Group of Companies It’s the season of holiday parties that can last all the way into January. That’s a lot of dip and egg nog! There are loads of tips out there for the holiday host but what about the guests? How many times have you been invited to a party and had no idea what to make or bring? Here are 4 Tips to help you become the perfect holiday guest: For those who find that cooking is a difficult mystery, you can’t go wrong with a tray. Simply order a cheese, fruit or meat tray in advance and pick it up the next day for an easy dish that works for any kind of party. They’re always a winner, and the plus is you can tailor it to the type of party that you are attending. We simply need 24 hours to make the tray of your dreams.

The Prepared Guest:

A party isn’t a party without cups, plates, napkins etc…Be that guest! It’s an easy choice for someone whose not the best cook and a great relief to a host who’s busy cooking up a storm and running around. Another type of prepared guest is one who makes sure they bring a tray or bowl for their dish. Another great tip is to bring your dish in sturdy tin foil or Tupperware you don’t mind leaving behind.

The Amateur Cook:

Try your skills at a simple party classic. There are many easy recipes for meatballs, artichoke dips, and Brie & jam dishes. Just grab the ingredients and throw them together to look like a pro in the kitchen and at the party. Our favorite dish is smoked salmon and capers and onions on a bagel bite or small rye toast. Simple and easy to make they are always a favorite at parties and look fancy too!

The Busy Guest:

The holidays can be hectic for many people so for those with little time to invest in thinking of what to make or bring to a party there are a lot of simple no-brainer choices to pick from. No one has ever shirked at a good bottle of wine or rum & egg nog. If you don’t know much in the wine department, ask a staff member for some recommendations. Or grab some dip and chips or veggies for a healthier dish. Another easy choice is going with a shrimp cocktail. Pick one up and you’re on your way.

Bloody Buck’s Fizz

Mix one part crème de cassis with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and top with three parts prosecco. Skewer a couple of blueberries onto a sprig of thyme and drop into the glass to serve.

Pour one part raspberry liqueur into a champagne flute then add one sprig of fresh basil. Top with four parts prosecco and serve.

A splash of sloe gin and a blackberry or two, topped up with prosecco.

Toss the strawberries and sugar in a medium bowl and let sit 30 minutes. Divide the strawberries among 4 wine glasses; put 1 scoop of ice cream in each. Fill with prosecco.

Squeeze and strain the red juice of one ripe blood orange and pour 50ml into a tall flute. Top up with ice-cold prosecco.

I’m having a KOHLER kitchen this year! Expert Advice from BAC

I’m the type of person who likes to think ahead of events - in detail. And a few months ago, my focus was already on Christmas Day. Specifically, the moment in the day when the turkey is cooked and it’s time to clean the massive pan I cooked it in. So, in the true spirit of “I’m going to save myself the grief again this year”, I decided to give myself an early Christmas gift - a new kitchen sink and faucet. Gone will be the days of clunking my pots and pans in a too-small sink under a too-short tap! I will also admit - I’m fussy. I don’t want just any old sink and faucet. I want a nice, big, deep sink with a high faucet that I can pull in all directions to clean every corner of the pan. And I want something that’s built to last. And it has to be beautiful to look at. In other words, I want KOHLER. So I took myself off to the only Kohler Showroom (at BAC) on the Island to talk to someone who I knew would help me find my dream sink and faucet. The first person I see on entering is Yolanda Hypolite, and her reassuring tone is the first voice I hear, “Good morning! How can I help?” I am thrilled. Everyone knows Yolanda’s an expert on everything Kohler! I tell her exactly what I’m looking for and she leads me into the brilliant white Kohler Showroom. I expect to stop at the sinks. We don’t. Nor at the faucets (so many to choose from!). No, we continue to a desk in the far corner, with a television screen perched above. I’m bemused - are we going to watch a movie? Uh, no. Yolanda pulls up an interactive guide on the main Kohler website – “How to Shop for Kitchen Products”. Wow, this is more involved than I thought! What I didn’t realise was that you can’t just shop for a sink and faucet at Kohler. No, no, no! With the number of options to choose from, you’ve got to do some very serious, deep thinking about that sink and that faucet. The interactive guide takes you through a series of questions that, with the human help of Yolanda, will

make sure you walk out of that Showroom knowing you’re going to have a sink and faucet (and maybe a few other things) that will keep you happy in the kitchen for a very long time! Of course, you can look at the interactive guide at any time on your own computer at home, but I really would recommend you go to the Kohler Showroom to make your final choices. The Sales team in the Showroom know how to guide you through quickly and easily, keeping you on track with your choices. Yolanda was quick to point out with my first selection, “You really need to think about the finish on that faucet and make sure it matches and gels with everything else. You want it to look seamless - not stand out.” That’s true. Needless to say, after half an hour of going through the guide and walking over to look at the array of sinks in the Showroom to make up my mind, I managed to choose an under-mount, double-equal sink with a Smart Divide® configuration (for those big pans!) made of KOHLER enamelled cast iron. But the sink shopping didn’t stop there! I also walked away with an order for a sink rack and basket, cutting board and colander, and soap and lotion dispensers - all customised to fit! Once the sink was chosen, we proceeded through another interactive guide to find the faucet of my dreams, which didn’t take long as I had a good idea of what I was looking for. A gorgeous pulldown, with touchless Response® technology (no need to touch the faucet with my grubby, greasy turkey fingers!) and a polished chrome finish. I’m in love. At the end of the day, I’m glad I think ahead. Because by finding my dream sink and faucet, I still had time to find a new countertop too. And I’m right on time for the New Year!

Construction is overwhelming – it is expensive and requires many decisions to be made under the pressure of time and often with minimal information. If you can, hire someone to guide you through the process - it is worth the investment. If that is not possible then the following key pieces of advice will help ensure that your project finishes on time and budget and your new space looks and feels like you imagined it could.

Do your research – when hiring a contractor or designer, ask around for recommendations and then ask for pictures of completed work. Word of mouth is the most valuable tool for finding out the business behind the business.

Before construction commences create a budget including a 10% contingency for unforeseens…and stick to it! Before we start designing a project, we create a spreadsheet including every item required and put a value next to it. Once the bottom line is agreed on, the design work can begin.

When deciding on a style use the internet to its fullest but don’t get lost in design cyberspace. Pinterest and Houzz are great tools for getting ideas but can create design havoc so that you end up with a mish mash of styles. Pick images you love and share them with your designer so together you can pinpoint your design aesthetic.

Lighting is key – LEDs are the most energy efficient fixtures available and they range in temperature according to Kelvin (K). Usually 4000-5000K fixtures are too harsh for most residential settings. 3000k is quite common but I prefer a 2800K light which gives off a warm and comfortable light that is bright enough to see easily but does not burn out retinas!

Updated kitchens and bathrooms are key to increasing a home’s value, but they are also the most expensive to renovate. For this reason, I often recommend a white shaker cabinet for kitchens. The white shaker cabinet is like a great pair of jeans - timeless and versatile. They are easily personalized with the accessories - hardware, countertop and backsplash. Add a graphic concrete tile floor or backsplash and black drawer pulls and you have a trendy vintage industrial feel. Go with polished nickel knobs, marble countertops and walnut wood flooring and the space immediately feels sophisticated. And, if in 6 or 7 years your

tastes change, swapping out the backsplash and cabinet hardware will update your space without breaking the bank.

When picking wall paint the sheen is as important as the color. Unless you want to feel like you are living inside an igloo then semi-gloss paint should only be used on woodwork. A matt wall paint hides the imperfections and creates a luxurious finish.

Shop local – Going to the US and filling a container is a false economy. You end up with either extra or are short of items and often things you thought looked great after 8 hours of binge shopping in Home Depot are a disappointment when you see them in daylight. So save your trips for holidays. Today many local retailers travel far and wide to find interesting materials at reasonable pricing. Also, don’t underestimate the value of a local retailer’s warranty. When something goes wrong you will be lucky to get a call back from one of the big box retailers, let alone a replacement shipped to you free of charge.

Size matters – If you do find something online that you can’t live without make sure you check the dimensions before you order. If not, then chances are you could easily end up with a light fixture sized for City Hall or hardware for a doll house.

Expect the unexpected – Living on an island means importing becomes a major part of your renovation process. Shipping is not easy to manage - delays and damage will happen. However, if this does occur and if you have armed yourself with a great team they will bear the brunt of the frustration over getting a replacement to site asap. If you take that on yourself prepare to pay extra and have to deal with the consequences.

Finally, have patience – home wasn’t built in a day! There is a process and an order to the way construction should be done. While your team should do their best to accommodate the mishaps that occur (see 9. above), they are not miracle workers. Most importantly, try and remember that a renovation/construction project is an opportunity to take an exciting and creative journey. If you pick the right team to guide you, the experience can be a good one!
