6 Expert Artwork Tips for Your New Space! From Global Art Advisor, Holly Mazar-Fox (Founder & CEO of Mazar-Fox Art Consulting Ltd.) A home renovation is an exciting endeavor, transforming your living spaces into personal expressions of style, taste and comfort - art is an integral part of that transformation.

Artwork can bring that “wow” factor to any home, while also creating a window into your own personal collecting journey. Whether an heirloom passed down from generation to generation to a new work by a contemporary artist, each serving as wonderful stories that represent you. Art brings joy and memories to every home… hence, worth being showcased with love! We’ve put together a shortlist of tips to help with your renovation plans:

1. Hold on Tight to Your Art Budget:

Artwork is an integral part of any interior space, be sure to include (and stick to) an art budget when you are first discussing your renovations goals. This can also include setting aside funds for new artwork or even new framing. In my experience, projects more often than not go over budget, by completion, none of the funds are left over for artwork purchases. Artwork is the very last step, but important part of these projects and can be put off if not listed as a priority.

2. Be Mindful of Bermuda’s Climate:

Although our island presents the perfect backdrop to any home, unfortunately, due to the heavy humidity and proximity to the ocean, artwork easily succumbs to mold. Make sure your artwork is properly framed (in the case of works on paper; prints and photographs), in a climate-controlled area and not in front of the sunlight. It’s definitely worth consulting an expert if you need advice on where to place your artwork.

3. Refresh Your Current Artwork:

A home renovation is the perfect opportunity to reassess your current art collection. Perhaps your new home will be more modern in aesthetic or have larger walls therefore your artwork might not fit with this new style or design. Therefore, it might be time to sell some of your artwork and free up some capital to buy new artwork. Museums do this all the time to fund new acquisitions!

4. Breathe New Life into Your Existing Collection:

Renovations are great opportunities to reinstall artwork in different rooms and spaces, through a new curatorial lens, breathing new life into your collection. It’s a wonderful way to “recycle” your artwork – placed in a new location you’ll come to appreciate aspects of the art you perhaps haven’t noticed before.

5. Try Something New:

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different media and styles -your dream home should be a reflection of you and your taste. Have you always wanted a bold and abstract work to greet your guests in your entrance? Many galleries and artists will loan you the work for a short period, “a trial” to allow clients to live with the artwork before purchasing. Why not venture into the newest wave of art collecting by showcasing, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)? Mostly digital artworks, these can be shown on a screen, many of which are animated giving your art collection a vibrant new feel.

6. Art Insurance:

Like all of our luxury goods, artwork needs to be insured. Depending on your current policy, this can be added to your contents insurance or under your Private Client policy, catering to high-end clients around the world. Please note, if your artwork does hold significant value, it should be insured properly and with a specialist art insurer. Are you entertaining the idea of a new kitchen? Whether your style is modern or traditional or somewhere in between the team of experienced designers from Sticks and Stones can help you achieve your dream kitchen. Many older kitchens do not function for our modern lifestyles and entertaining needs. Quite often they are cut off from the rest of the house and storage is not efficient. This was all true for a recent Warwick client who after meeting with David Benevides from Benevides & Associate, decided to renovate and open their living room, dining room and kitchen into one space. We worked seamlessly with the client and architect to formulate a design with function, flow and that would integrate well with the rest of the newly opened spaces. The initial consultation started by educating the clients on the different types of cabinets, door construction, finishes and discussing materials that work best for Bermuda’s climate. These are very important to understand, not only to achieve the look and style of kitchen you want, but to also

insure it remains beautiful several years after it is installed. The next step in designing a functional kitchen is deciding on the storage requirements and work zones of the kitchen. It is always helpful if clients research a few kitchens that they like and features they would like to include. In this project our client wanted a large sink, lots of storage for pantry items and small appliances, as well as a large island with enough seating for breakfast meals and entertaining with friends and family. This project features a framed inset style construction with a recessed panel Shaker style wood door which coordinates with style and aesthetics of the interior and exterior spaces. The semicustom line of cabinets chosen offers many standard wood, paint and glazed finishes and can also accommodate custom paint and stains as well. Here the perimeter cabinets are in a standard white painted finish and the island is accented in custom Chambrayblue finish. Kitchen cabinets can be specified using a company’s standard sizes. This helps to save money, but other designs require some customization or modifications and Sticks and Stones works with manufacturers who excel in making special requests a reality.

This modern cottage kitchen features reduced depth cabinets on opposite sides of the walls with taller units and standard cabinet depth on the stove run. Glass doors were added to open the kitchen, give a space for displaying items and break up the monotony of solid door panels. A custom stove hood was designed around a vent insert and the design was finished off with dimmable under cabinet LED lighting for functionality and accent at nighttime, or while entertaining in the adjacent spaces. Why stop with just the kitchen? Coordinating millwork in other areas of an open living space provide cohesiveness and balance. This project features a wall of millwork at the opposite end of the open space and is the home to a desk area and wet bar. The bar space is efficiently designed for glass storage, display of wine bottles in both the X storage above and in the cooler below. On the other side of the door the desk area is complete with filing, a charging station inside a drawer for convenient charging of mobile devices, open shelving and wall organizer slots for mail and important documents. Sticks and Stones is located at 110 Middle Road in Paget, just outside the hustle and bustle of town with onsite parking. Spring is typically a time of year that evokes freshness and change. It revives aspirational goals such as exercising, or motivates us to do some “spring cleaning”, to ensure our house is fresh and full of vitality. In 2017, my spring cleaning went to a whole new level. I decided to do home renovations. And not just one room. And not just replacing one set of doors and windows. I decided to do the whole house. Gulp! I was both excited, but it was also a bit stressful too! But not to worry. If you are like me and you are thinking of doing a little “fixing up”, here are six simple organising tips to ensure your house is “renovation ready” and you don’t break your budget.

Start at the END

Think about what you want your space to look like and how it will function once the renovations are completed. Put aside a chunk of time to make a list and even draw out what you want. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a full-time artist) Even if you do a brainstorm to get you started, it will help to move your plan along. When you communicate these decisions to your contractor right from the start, it will save money later because you won’t have to keep making change requests. (Hint: Create a spreadsheet that you can refer to throughout the project). 10 Island Living • Home Renovations 2022 • www.ipn.bm

Whether you are doing major renovations, or a one-off project, here are some key questions to ask: • What will the overall space be used for? • How will you operate in the space? What will you do? How will you do it? • Where will the items be stored, so they are fully accessible?

Document the DETAILS

Put everything in writing right from the start. Make sure you have contracts in place and create a spreadsheet of the needed tasks. Divide the entire project into phases and arrange for drop-down payments to occur after phase completions. This will keep everyone on the same page and accountable. Reach out to trusted friends (who know about these things) to get their opinions too. Key Tips: Keep all receipts and track what is being spent- a simple spreadsheet will do this – or just a simple list and a calculator!

Pare down your STUFF

Renovations are a great time to declutter! You will have less to manage and it will help you clarify what you will need after the renovations are done. Choose one area at a time and bring all “like items” together, to clearly see what you have. Decide what you will keep, donate, or dispose of. There are so many

organisations on island that are ready to receive what we no longer need.

Pack with a PLAN

Whether you are staying in your home or moving out, we always have “stuff to pack up” as we prepare ourselves. Again, start at the end and plan. Go through each of your “newly pared down rooms” and place the items in clearly labeled boxes. It does not have to be fancy - we can simply use masking tape and a marker, but the key is to label each box with the name of the room, and add a box number (Example, Kitchen Box #3). I always put the labels in the same place on boxes – top right corner, on the side of the box (not the top) so they can be easily seen. Track this list on your spreadsheet. This will save you time when you are ready to unpack.

Create a DUST-FREE ZONE

If you are going to be staying in your home during renovations, create areas (or at least one anyway!) that will be free from dust. It will become your haven to help you get away from it all. Put old towels at the base the door and purchase clear storage bins for items that need to be fully protected. Arrange for a cleaning company to come in once all the work has been done so that you can move back into your fresh space!

Dream of the Day - Plan for “DONE”

Sometimes we need to use our imagination to keep our motivation levels high. Create a wish list of items that you’ll use to decorate your space after the project has been completed. Create bookmarks of websites that you love (for easy access) or pictures of what you’d like to have. If you are like me, and you need a dose creativity, work with a home designer who can help to bring your ideas into reality No matter if it is one room or one house, if you take some time to plan the project from the start, you will have success and and save money along the way. Remember to be flexible, have patience and take time for yourself during the journey.
