There’s nothing more DIY than growing your own food! This global pandemic has brought to light our lack of food security and preparedness so with all this free time on our hands now is the perfect time to take control and get in the garden. As any seasoned gardener will tell you, gardening is always a learning experience and like with everything, you learn from every mistake, but to start off on the right foot here are few key points to have in mind when starting your garden.

Garden Style How to start your garden and improve your home and your FOOD! Expert Advice from Chris Faria, Gardener and Owner of Agra Living

Location is super important, choose a site that gets a minimum of 7 hours of direct sun. It is also beneficial to pick a spot that has some wind protection as the strong westerly winds we experience mainly between November and March can severely damage the plants you’re growing for food. Once you’ve chosen a spot decide what size garden bed works for your needs. If it’s your first time growing a veggie garden, then start small. However, if you wanna get serious about growing your own food, ideally start with a 5 feet by 20 feet bed that will give you a neat 100 ft2 and will allow for a more comprehensive garden plan. I would suggest removing the weeds from the desired area only when you’re ready to transplant your seedlings as the weeds protect the soil from the sun and hold water and nutrients in the upper few inches of soil.

Pick a GarDen size that works for you

Plants love loose soil, so digging is required! However you don’t need a tiller or fancy farming equipment. There are a few ways to do this but I highly recommend double digging up to 24 inches with a simple digging spade and fork as you will be giving the best foundation for your plants to thrive. If you’re not able to get that deep then loosen your soil as much as possible, at least 12 inches. If you find that soil is tough, try watering the area heavily the day before you plan to dig. Or save water and plan your digging after Mother Nature’s done the watering for you! Now it’s time to ‘feed the soil’ and make sure there’s enough goodness in the soil for your seedlings and the microbes that work hard 24/7 to bring nutrients to your plants. To do this we need to apply an organic granular fertilizer and then a good amount of compost on top. For a 100ft2 bed try using four to six five gallon buckets. Now turn this magical mix into the top four inches of soil with a digging fork making sure not to concentrate the fertilizer and compost in one area and you are ready to plant and to introduce our seedlings into their new home.

double digging

But here timing is everything so it’s super important to make sure that they are mature enough to be transplanted. Tomatoes, for instance, should be six inches tall and planted deep to grow strong healthy plants. Double check the spacing for each different plant so they have enough room to grow and consider planting companions in between to protect the soil and make better use of the space. For tomatoes, basil is a great choice as well as bush beans. Don’t forget to check the garden for water everyday. Even if it’s rained that doesn’t mean the soil is moist enough. An easy way to check is to simply push your finger down into the soil, if it feels dry give the bed a good drink or if it feels moist you’re good to go until tomorrow. Water when you have time in your busy schedule but avoid late in the afternoon as this will encourage soil borne diseases, like powdery mildew.

Your Pandemic DIY!

Gardening at Home PROJECT: Birdsong Garden Sara & Lily Schroder-Ross

GARDEN TYPE: It is a vegetable garden that we planted in March 2020 before the lockdown began. What was the hardest part? The hardest has been the weeding as the soil contained lots of weeds and we didn’t want to use weed killer. We have to weed every week!

Planting garden prep

We’re Growing!

What was The Easiest Part? The best thing about our new garden has been getting to plan, choose the plants and plant them as a family and then keeping track of how everything is growing together. Lily is excited to learn about growing our own food. We have just started using the herbs and the lettuce and are looking forward to eating the tomatoes and kale next.

PROJECT: Garden VARIETY Tawana Tannock

GARDEN TYPE: My garden(s) can fit into a multitude of categories! I have a Fruit and Vegetable Garden, Vertical, Herb Garden, Raised Garden, Indoor, Outdoor and Container! As a novice, I wasn’t sure what type of garden I should aim for, or what would work, so attempting various methods of gardening was equal parts experimentation and adventure. What was the hardest part? My lack of understanding of the upkeep required. Planting in a raised bed requires quite a lot of pruning, however planting directly in the soil requires constant weeding. I naively thought of gardening as a two-step process. (1) Plant the seeds/seedlings (2) Harvest the bounty! I was not aware of anything in between, that I realized I had to do! Such as inspecting and treating pests, pruning, weeding, building a trellis and daily watering where required. What was The Easiest Part? The best part of the experience thus far has been going to the grocers and walking past the lettuce, kale and herbs, knowing that I have more than enough growing at home- and also to allow my mother and neighbor to do the same, and sharing the bounty!

Home Improvements HOW TO Make Your Renovation Less Stressful

Construction doesn’t have to be stressful if you can consolidate your needs under one roof. To renovate you need input from a designer and a contractor, they are the two main components in your renovation. The designer helps bring your vision to life, the contractor tells you what can be done and what can be done within your budget. Working together with the two you can get all the information you need without scheduling several appointments or without doing too many revisions to make it all work. Hasco Home’s Design Concierge Service is a great resource if you would like to work with a designer to achieve the desired look for your space that suits your specific style and taste. Our service includes design concepts, a detailed floor plan and management of your project from creation through to completion. Our designers have wide-ranging experience from kitchen to bathrooms, BBQ areas, pools and more. Our designers will get your budget and then consult our experienced Contractor at Hasco Construction, Ltd. with what can be done and the cost. Your Designer will then coordinate the purchase of all your finishes such as kitchen cabinetry, countertops, and flooring and liaison with the contractor to make sure your supplies are on island when you need them and that the design is being installed per your vision.

Hasco Group of companies also has an imports service. You can easily import appliances, plumbing and electrical fixtures, household furniture and any items you need from overseas and Hasco Imports can coordinate the shipping, customs process and delivery process for you. Whether you’re building your home, renovating an office or looking for new cabinetry or furniture – Hasco has you covered. SOLAR

Expert Advice from Nicholas Duffy, Divisional Manager of Bermuda Alternate Energy I think it’s fair to say that solar panels on rooftops here in Bermuda have now become a relatively common sight. Those amongst us who were convinced that their installation on our rather unique Bermuda slate rooves would result in never ending leaks and destroy the integrity of the entire roof have, by the sheer force of evidence, been proven entirely wrong. We can now be very confident that properly designed and engineered solar systems do not blow off the roof in a hurricane. In reality it is sometimes the exact opposite, where portions of the slate roof blow off but the solar panels, which are directly attached to the structural roof framing, remain stubbornly in place. My own solar systems have now weathered 7 named hurricanes of varying intensities without the slightest hint of damage. There are also a few of you out there (you know who you are!) who have actually been saved from large holes in your roof during storms when the falling branch landed directly on the panels, saving the roof below. Now that we can now say that solar is becoming ‘mainstream’ in Bermuda, it’s time to start designing it into the architectural fabric

No Longer an Optional Extra

of our homes when we build from new or do extensive renovations, rather than trying to graft it on after the fact. Many times we have met with clients who present us with a set of ‘final approved’ building plans while explaining they want to add solar to make the home as energy efficient as possible. All too often, we are faced with an approved home design that may tick all of the boxes from an aesthetic standpoint but has severe limitations from a roof design perspective and greatly limits our ability to provide the most efficient or lowest cost solar system. Adequate roof space, facing the optimal direction, at a suitable pitch is fundamental to good solar design and often many, if not all, of these criteria have been overlooked in the design phase resulting in a roof that is simply not conducive to the installation of the most efficient solar system possible. Clearly compromises will inevitably be needed to get an acceptable balance between what is aesthetically pleasing and functionally efficient but the two are by no means mutually exclusive. The earlier we bring the requirements of a solar system into the design equation the more successful and efficient will be the final outcome.

Staying Healthy While at Home Expert Advice from the Registered Dietitians at Island Nutrition

They say you don’t miss a good thing until it’s gone, and doesn’t that hold true right now? Our lifestyles have been completely turned upside down by the COVID-19 virus. However, with more people cooking at home and having a little more time in the day, this could be a fantastic opportunity to form new, healthy habits. Good nutrition is crucial for health. Especially at times when the immune system needs to fight back or if you have pre-

existing medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or hypertension (as this can increase the risk of serious complications should you become unwell). Plan ahead - with restrictions on our shopping days it could be easy to bulk buy but this could lead to over-eating or wasted food. Plan your meals ahead and take a list to the store. Buy only what you need before your next shop to reduce waste and ensure there is enough to go around! Best Buys – choose produce that lasts longer. Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are good options. Apples and pears are great fresh but also stewed down if they are beginning to overripen. Try freezing fruit to make a delicious addition to smoothies. Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli will tend to have a longer shelf life than other vegetables as long as they are kept in the fridge. Root vegetables like beets, carrots & turnips will keep well and when roasted can be an easy addition to any meal. Make some hearty soups with any vegetables that are starting to look like they have seen better days. Frozen fruit & vegetables – perfectly nutritious and ready prepared: frozen fruits and vegetables are a great, long lasting source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Pre-chop and freeze onions, garlic and ginger and place into ziplock bags, this can be a great way to add flavor to any homecooked meal! Tinned goods – choose fruit in juice, vegetables or tuna in spring water and low sodium, pre-soaked beans or lentils. These are low in saturated fat, high in protein and fiber and great for adding to soups, salads, stews or making spreads & dips such as hummus. Be creative, if the store is out of chickpeas or black beans, swap it out for a different bean you haven’t used before. Another positive of tinned goods is that they can be easy on the purse or wallet during these tricky times. Lastly remember to stay active – lots of local facilities are hosting online classes. There are youtube channels and apps available for anything from HIIT training to line dancing. This is a great time to try something new! If you are concerned about your or your child’s nutritional health and feel you would benefit from support from a Registered Dietitian please contact us at Island Nutrition on 295-4082 or at info@islandnutrition.bm.
