The bathroom is a very personal space used by everyone in the household so it needs to be kept updated and clean. Because of it’s frequent use it is important not to just throw money at it, but to plan your dream bathroom very carefully in advance, to achieve the look and function you want from the start. When it’s time to consider selling your home, industry experts say that there are really just two rooms that count most when selling a home: the kitchen and the bathroom so it’s worth taking the time to get it right. New home owner Kyle Smith purchased his Pembroke home in 2016 and the first round of renovations focused on his master bedroom and bathroom. Kyle’s hilltop home was built more than 20 years ago and one of the first issues that needed addressing was a difference in floor levels between the master bathroom and the rest of the house. “The floor of the bathroom was three inches below the rest of the house, it was concrete and the rest of the house was carpeted with wooden floors underneath” said Kyle. The goal was to create an improved space for the master suite including an enlarged walk in closet and a newly renovated, spacious and open bathroom. An old closet was ripped out of the previous bathroom layout and a large window installed, bringing an impressive amount of light to the room. Some extra space was also borrowed from the hallway, allowing for the installation of a double sink. The existing flat ceiling was raised into a tray ceiling allowing for more height and giving an airy and spacious feel. Of course, no renovation goes totally without hiccups! Kyle said: “One of the issues was the Air Conditioning line cut
directly across the ceiling so when we put in the new tray ceiling there was not enough give to run the line across. We had to get the electric and the AC team in to find a solution and thankfully they did!” “There was also an old galvanised ventilation pipe which we had to cut and there was concern that part of the roof would fall in… but it all worked out perfectly in the end.” After the structural work was completed, the fun started: installing all the fixtures and fittings. Kyle decided to use all chrome fittings, bought from BAC, and he shipped in a Zuma tub which has a whirlpool air bath: tiny holes all around the base of the bath that allow air to be pumped into the water. That irritating issue of having to get wet when turning on the shower (how many times has that happened to you?) was also addressed by having the on/off handle located just inside the shower door and away from the shower head. As perhaps befits a single young man, the toilet, which was also specially shipped in, is self-cleaning and all the bathroom lights are controlled from an app on Kyle’s cell phone. They can turn to any colour, be dimmed or brightened and also can be controlled individually. Perhaps the best touch is the electrical socket installed in the top corner of the room where Kyle plans to put a TV. It means he can sit back in his whirlpool air bath, set the lights to red, turn on the TV and watch his beloved Liverpool while the toilet cleans itself. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

Making Your Loo Work for You
The powder room, lavatory, washroom, restroom, toilet, the loo, gents or ladies, the privy, outhouse, latrine, water closet… There a many names for this infamous room but one thing stays the same: it is the most important room in your home. Lets be real, everyone’s got to go. This makes this room more than vital in a home. But just because it’s a basic necessity doesn’t mean it needs to be basic, quite the contrary. Creating a bathroom that’s a retreat for you, or better yet a place that’s an organized oasis, allows you to have more than just your basic bathroom. Not many people realize a bathroom’s full potential. There are many small things you can do in this room to make it work for you. For a place with such low square footage you can make it feel anything but small. Maximize your bathroom’s functionality by keeping it organized and clean, and by being smart with your space.
Control the Clutter: The Bathroom may as well be the home’s proverbial junk drawer. Think about all the products, prescriptions, towels, makeup, and other essentials that get thrown into your bathroom’s storage spaces. How often do you use them? And how easily it is to get to them? First and foremost make a plan to clean out your old products at least once a year if not every couple of months. This will not only help you create more space but also get rid of products that can be potentially useless or even dangerous once expired. Check the expiration dates on vitamins and medications in the medicine cabinet. Throw away expired sunscreen as well. Ladies - make sure that you keep tabs on how long you’ve had your makeup.
The Great Divide: Go all out on drawer dividers to make it a
breeze to get ready. Limit your top drawers to products you use several times a week, if not daily. Stash special-occasion cosmetics in an outof-the-way bag.
Lazy Susan: Try adding a lazy Susan to your bathroom cupboard.
This way you can just rotate it around whenever you need to get something specific, without crashing over every other product in sight.
Keep it Clean: It might seem obvious to keep your bathroom clean, and most of us generally do. With the grind of daily life, we all can slack a little on tidying up, especially when it comes to things that we use daily. Don’t even mention doing that deep clean we all know needs to happen but are dreading to do you show us someone who loves scouring the toilet bowl! But if you create some daily habits and do some small things you’ll have a room that not only feels clean but will be more enjoyable for everyone to use.
Daily Habits: Put things away as soon as you’ve used them –
toothbrushes, moisturizers, hairbrush and lotions. Teach your kids how
8 Island Property News • Bathrooms 2017 • www.ipn.bm
to wipe up the toothpaste from the basin after brushing their teeth, and make sure to hang towels right away.
Stop that Mold: Turn the fan on before showering to keep the
air circulating to prevent mold and mildew, and keep a squeegee in the shower for cleaning the glass after showering.
Sparkling Bowl: Pour a cup of baking soda into your toilet, let
sit for 5-10 minutes, then brush gently around the sides using a softbristle brush and flush. You can also use this solution on the outside of the toilet and the seat, using a rag to wipe and rinse.
Let it Flow: To get your shower head clean, fill a Ziploc bag with
white vinegar, then submerge the head in it, securing it with a rubber band. Leave it to soak overnight, and then rinse with warm water. This can be done weekly for a deep cleaning.
Get Smart: So your bathroom is small, that shouldn’t stop you from having a space that you enjoy and that works for you. There is always a way to create space and shelving to help you utilize your room to it’s fullest. Consider what you need and where you can utilize your space better. Do you have a lot of wall space? Is the area above the toilet being used?
Saving Counter Space: Think about your hair dryer - you use it
daily so it’s natural that it sits on your counter top, cord in the way and taking up valuable counter space. Create a hanging space inside the cabinet door or have a look for some great wall holders that can not only hold your dryer but also other electronics and knick knacks.
Knick-Knacks: One of our favorite Hacks to create more space is to use large or small mason jars attached to a board. They not only allow you to hold many things you’d use daily but does it in an attractive and organized way.
Wall Storage: Re-purpose wicker baskets. That cute basket
that just doesn’t fit in your bathroom cabinet might have a purpose elsewhere — like on the walls. Hang two above your toilet to hold rolled up towels and discreetly hide toilet paper in a handy spot.
Outside the box: Consider using a spice rack, or even an old
wooden ladder behind the toilet to provide you with more space or hanging areas. Both will take up minimal room with maximizing the space in that area.
Take some time next time you’re in your bathroom. Are you using it to it’s fullest potential? Is it working for you? Think about what you could do to organize your space better. Small things go a long way. So organize your space, create some habits, and use your imagination to make your bathroom a place you can enjoy.
BS&R How To: Add Warmth to Your Bathroom Expert Advice from BS&R Group With all that tile, porcelain, and metal, bathrooms are notoriously cold places. Luckily for you there are a lot of design choices these days that incorporate various materials to add warmth to your bathroom. Mixing wood with the moisture-ridden setting of a bathroom may sound like a recipe for disaster but thanks to modern technologies, this is no longer the case. Wood is becoming an excellent choice to add warmth in a bathroom. Positioning it among other materials and styles gets you a lot of depth and personality in a room. So where should you utilize wood in a bathroom? The floor is a good place to start. With so many traditional homes in Bermuda, a number of us have the benefit of beautiful wood flooring. So why not continue it throughout your house and into the bathroom to give your home a cohesive look throughout? Wood can be surprisingly sturdy and resistant in a humid environment provided it’s safely protected and maintained.
home, like in Bermuda, this is where you’re able to bring in those antique touches. What is the Best Approach to Choosing Wood for the Bathroom? Whatever the design, choosing a wooden material and sealant that works for moisture is key. This is where you need to do your research and even consult an expert. We all know the dangers of rot and mildew here on the Island. Accoya wood is perfect for this use. It is both durable and rot-proof, naturally insulating, retains coatings longer, and is dimensionally stable (so it won’t warp, shrink or swell). This is one of the prime reasons we chose to bring in this brand of wood. It’s hard to resist the warmth, texture and authenticity of wood. So think about it next time your thinking of renovating your bathroom. It doesn’t have to be this sterile cold place. Let us help wrap you in warmth in your next project.
Next is in your countertops and shelving. This is where design and texture really come into play. Wooden countertops, shelving and touches paired with the smoothness of ceramic basins and metal fixtures can create a dynamic focal point in a room. For a traditional

Prevention is better than Cure Expert Advice from AquaTech
The Calm: The Hurricane is on its way and your to do list just got a whole lot longer! Here are a few essentials for protecting your pool: 1. Add a few scoops of shock to the pool via the skimmers before the storm to fight off any algae caused by dirt and debris blowing into the pool. 2. C lear your pool deck and secure any pool chemicals, pool toys and patio furniture. It is safer to place furniture in the pool rather than it being blown in and damaging your pool tiles or finish during the storm. 3. M ake sure you are stocked up on pool chemicals and be sure to have a good algaecide on hand. 4. C heck your pool net for rips and tears as it will need to be in good condition to tackle any unwanted debris that has been blown into your pool during the high winds.
The Aftermath: Once it is safe to go outside, follow these easy steps to give your pool a head start before your pool cleaner can get to it. 1. E mpty the skimmer baskets of debris so that the pool can circulate freely. If you are without power this is still the necessary first step to avoid blockages and potential pump burn out when the power does come back on. 2. R emove patio furniture and any large branches and debris from the pool.
3. Clear any other debris away from the main drain to make sure there is no blockage and add a few more scoops of shock and some algaecide. If the power is out this will hold off any algae caused by lack of circulation and if you do have circulation this will help to bring the pool back to its normal condition sooner rather than later. 4. If you are lucky enough to have power, adjust your pool timer to run for an extended period of time or even overnight to allow for extra circulation. This will help to trap any dirt or soil in the filter and help to reduce cloudiness caused by the dirt, salt and debris. 5. Add a few ounces of clarifier to the water to help ‘clump’ the dirt and debris before it reaches the filter and speed up the process. 6. Lastly, check the weather channel to make sure there isn’t another one on the way!
