Letter From The Editor

Welcome back! As we continue this journey, our commitment remains the same – quality and class! In the Caribbean and throughout the world by extension, Easter is a time for reflection. It is one of the few holiday seasons where many people are free to travel. Airports are packed with groups in colour coded t-shirts, like the Tele-Gathering Group on their 21st year that vacationed in St. Lucia as well as a combo comprising Water and Sewerage Authority as well as Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago Employees that visited Barbados. From the reports it was true Caribbean integration. In this 2nd issue of our magazine, the Easter theme was evident. We included a section for kids, which married an Easter activity and ideas for parents to spend that much needed quality time with their young ones. We will not stop there, as the elderly in our communities would have laid the foundation for us to build. Thus, in our future publications, look out for the ‘not so young, but young at heart’ to be featured, as appreciating our past will no doubt ensure our continued legacy and inevitable growth. Our social media presence has definitely grown thanks to you our readers. Look for us and like us on Facebook and Instagram and follow us on twitter. We thank you for your positive words and feedback. Your efforts in assisting us by sharing the link and tagging your friends have not gone unnoticed. Remember, your actions will help encourage that young person, who may not be an academic scholar but may have a unique artistic idea that can land him or her in our magazine. We will continue to embrace our smaller islands – St. Kitts, BVI. Dominica, Grenada – let us hear from you. There are so many untapped forms of art that are waiting to be discovered. Who knows, by perusing our pages you may happen to be inspired. Finally, be sure to check out our competitive advertising prices. You cannot beat the offerings listed on page 48. With new businesses popping up daily, there must be someone you know whose business needs a bit of a digital push and Island Signatures is just the media to assist. We encourage you to send your ideas with the promise that our team listens to feedback. As if this issue isn’t exciting enough, I can’t wait for our 3rd release which highlight’s the 50th anniversary of Barbados’ Independence! Stay with us on this journey! Ocean’s

Little Rooms

Written By: Luanne Roberts-Hunte

I gazed in amazement as a 5’3” young lady stood, drawing free hand life sized characters, with what seemed to be little or no effort. My curiosity took over and I engaged her in a conversation which allowed me to enter ‘Ocean’s Little Rooms.’

This Enterprise was birthed when Carla Gall’s son, Ocean, was born 13 years ago. As a young first time mother, she struggled with the decision of how to bring his nursery to life. She decided that the regular posters would not suffice. Instead, she created a ‘Lion King’ themed mural that rivalled works of popular artists. Carla, a self-taught artist from Bank Hall, Barbados, uses chalk and paint to create her masterpieces. Her inspiration for entering this field was motivation from her art teacher at Parkinson Memorial Secondary School - Ms. Harietta Bovell. Carla’s work can be seen at paediatric offices, and children’s nurseries or pre-schools, sports bars (such as Nigel’s Sports bar) and even adult bedrooms. Although her specialty is cartoon art, she is certainly not limited in this area as her artistic ability extends into other avenues. This talented artist makes body shop products. Her line includes soaps, body butters, massage oils, body scrubs and specialises in treatments for acne and eczema , using items indigenous to Barbados.

Pillow Talk…Hand Bag walk… Written By: Luanne Roberts-Hunte

W

hat do you think about when you hold, squeeze or hug a pillow?

Does décor or comfort come to your mind? What about back support, pregnancy or pet beds with awesome designs? What about if you have a bag fetish? One that demands co-ordination with your outfits? If the answers to those questions excite you in any way, KMH Creations is your answer! Kerri Horton-Wiltshire was tired of living paycheck to paycheck and wanted to do something she enjoyed and loved. In January 2012 she had to make a difficult decision - whether to pay bills or buy fabric. Today, she is happy that she made the right decision. KMHCreations, located at Pine lands, St. Michael, designs and creates beautiful custom made hand bags, clutch purses for any occasion and throw pillows and cushions to fit one’s style and personality. Because of the climate in Barbados, handbags tend to peel. That issue does not affect Kerri’s work as she mainly uses natural materials such as burlap, cotton and buckram. Her custom and sometimes pre-made items can make wonderful gifts which can be further embellished to your specific taste.

4 Must-Haves to ‘Spring into Summer’

Written by: Rushane Campbell

Hello Readers,

We are currently in Spring and quickly approach Summer but here in the Caribbean we don’t have distinct seasons but rather times which are hot, hotter and hottest! Here are 4 Style Must-Haves as we move towards Summer!

1. Patterns

Whether it be floral, African print or colour blocks (nothing too crazy) this summer your wardrobe will thank you for hints of patterns! These are standout pieces which will not necessarily be on a shirt but perhaps pants if you are bold or on the pocket of a T-Shirt if you are conservative. Also, ensure patterns are suitable for your body type and personal style. It is important to note that bigger patterns make you look bigger so err on the side of caution when choosing your patterns. However, if you have the style and confidence to carry the pattern then no worries!

2. Loafers

These shoes are GREAT for summer! Why? Because of its multi-functionality and the way it can be worn with ANYTHING at any time! You can wear them to a beach party with shorts, a night out with jeans or to a summer wedding with a blazer. For the more stylish and cool readers, you could try suede loafers (as seen below) and for a more conservative reader, you could try boat shoes (as seen below).

3. Stand-Out Shades

In summer there are two things EVERYONE will be doing: Going to the Beach and Going to Day Time Events. What do you need at both? Stand-Out Shades. The cool thing about sunglasses is that, like a watch, it’s all about you and your style. Find something that works for you, your personality and face structure!

4. A RISK

This summer, take a risk! …a calculated and informed risk but a risk nonetheless.

Built Guys: A huge risk you can take is following the trend of shorter (but not too short) beach

shorts! What about those arms? Yes! Show off your best assets as you the girls love it and it enhances your confidence and shows off the physique that you worked so hard to get!

Slim/Tall Guys: A huge risk you should take is wearing an “overall”. It was very popular in the

Fresh Prince 90’s era and has regained its popularity. If it’s the right style and fit you may look really dope! I’m gonna try it, you should too!

Conservative/Olders Guys: A huge risk you should take is the use of colours! Without

overdoing it, a pop of colour can really enhance your style especially if you’re not able to be as “trendy” as other guys in clothing styles! Well, that’s all folks! I’m sure I’ll be seeing you in summer looking COOL in the heat!

Attractive Food for Weightloss Goal! By Smirnique Browne Being a “big girl” I was no stranger to dieting. Last January, I was forced to face very staggering realities and effect a necessary change in my life style. Like everyone else, I liked “nice food.” In Trinbagonian parlance, that meant food that was highly seasoned and satisfying… I guess you can say comfort food. Thus, my REAL challenge was to prepare tasty, nutritionally balanced and attractive food. It meant consuming carbs in the form of ground provisions and limiting meats to chicken, turkey or fish, steamed, broiled or baked. No fried foods no carbonated beverages, no confectionaries, just lots of fruits, vegetables and water. I swapped out unhealthy ingredients in recipes and replaced them with healthier options such as whole grain, so that I could still indulge in dishes that were appealing to me. The end result was tasty food, attractively plated, so much so that my daughter felt like every meal was prepared by the head chef of a fancy hotel. I achieved this as I took time to use complimenting and contrasting colours with plating my edible designs. Below are some of my favourite dishes. I am sure you never thought food could be art right?! Well now you know it can be!

Garden salad garnished with orange slices

A refreshing morning fruit plate including strawberries watermelon grapes and green apples.

Spinach stuffed chicken breasts glazed with my own homemade honey BBQ sauce

Easter Home Décor with Kids By Sabrina Lee

D

o not touch that! Stop! No! Put that back before you break it! Leave it! Go play with your toys…” These words have been uttered by every parent at least once a day. The fight between a living room full of broken crayons, tiny toys and cookie crumbs does not have to be the norm. We all love to have our homes decorated to display our personal style and taste, but that’s not always easy to create when you have children. Just because you have tiny inquisitive hands around or jumping frogs known as kids doesn’t mean you have to give up your design style completely. Here we show you how to blend your interior style with fun crafts for the kids this Easter. While we accept that glass table tops and white furniture is a ‘no-no’ around our little ones, there are many ways you can incorporate your style with a busy home. The basis of any home is balance. This can be found by teaching your children the value of pride in displaying and taking good care of their most valued possessions, starting first at home. Have you ever seen a child with his or her favorite toy or a craft piece they made? Notice how they are very over protective of it and wish for no one to touch. Apply this to your kids in your home. By having a set place within the home that is meant to display your children’s work of art and favourite toys, your kids will beam with pleasure knowing that all who come to your home will see. Here are a fewsimple tips and tricks using basic items.

•Yarn can easily become a fuzzy bunny, a hair band, wire and white twisties can become a cute bunny ear piece – perfect for Mr. Pinky (Your daughters favorite bear).

•You will not believe that all you need is a sock and some rice for the base of another adorable bunny. Kids will love make these fun and simple crafts.

•Allow your child to use a small chalkboard to post a message reminding all of the reason for the season.

•If you are the adventurous, fun loving parent, who loves treasure hunts, after the treats and or hints are collected from the colorful plastic eggs, use simple jars or bowls and place the eggs on display, which will serve as a reminder of the activity every time you or your child walks by, while adding to the Easter décor.

Positive affirmations from visitors to your home and your family will reinforce to your little ones that everyone sees and appreciates the value of what they hold dear. All the while, you will be able to simply set your home with colorful flowers, linen and drapes without worry. Take the time to explain to your children that mommy has very valuable things she likes to keep clean, neat and in its own place. Together you can stand back and take pride in the union formed between each child and your own home design. Such a collaboration will not only bring about a deeper family bond as your kids feel involved and appreciated, but it will naturally boost his or her self-confidence while allowing you to spend quality time together.

Happy kids, happy home, happy you.

Some safety tips and precaution: •Use Hard Plastic Vases (in case of tempted hands) •Choose durable material that can be easily laundered •Always let kids know the consequences associated to troubling things that do not concern them

S

ilk. Pure silk.

These are words one can use to describe the caress of Ray Harris’ voice. Did I mention his versatility… from Neo Soul and R&B, then just as quickly back to dancehall and reggae? What about the hypnotic power of his serenade with Redemption Song by Bob Marley? Chatting with this 25 year old singer/songwriter from the beautiful island of Barbados was so relaxing, as his demeanour can make anyone comfortable. Ramon Harris or “RayVybz” as he is commonly known, moved from a small village in St. John called Pool Land, to St. Phillip at the age of 14. He frequented church as his grandfather was a pastor, whichcould have certainly impacted his path to music. Ray was interested in the arts from an early age and has also been involved in the areas of dance and theatre. At 6’2”, you cannot guess that he is shy, but give him a mike and he owns that stage! His passion for performing propelled his creativity, making him the self-taught guitarist and pianist he is today. Ray’s skills create soulful, energetic, relatable and impactful music which move and influence his audience. Older persons say ‘be careful of the company you keep’ or ‘birds of a feather flock together’, to connote a negative inference regarding one’s conduct. In Ray’s case, however, spending time with friends who were musicians with a “cool vibe”, cemented his calling in the musical field. The second born of two sons, he is disciplined and hard working. These character traits can be attributed to him attaining the rank of sergeant in the cadets, for which he has travelled regionally. This discipline motivated him to become certified and he graduated in 2014 with his Associate Degree in Music from the Barbados Community College. He has had many experiences and collaborations throughout his career. He was a contestant in the ‘Richard Stoute Teen Talent’ contest, then made his official debut into reggae through ‘JuanLove,’ a band, which pushed him to pursue reggae more intently. Throughout the years Ray has also had multiple performances at bars, hotels and local shows. Even recently, RayVybz was a finalist in the very first ‘Who’s Next’ singing competition. He also wrote a song for Toni Norville entitled “Back Against the Wall.” His hobbies include dancing, football – chilling with friends, going to shows and listening to live performances. Unsurprisingly, his favourite food is macaroni pie and chicken(a guy after my own heart!) If given the opportunity, Ray will like to meet P diddy and Jay Z. He finds their entrepreneurial spirit to be inspiring and one day, like them, he wishes to diversify his brand and invest in other areas. Ray is currently working in the studio on original music and an upcoming project, soon to be released. In his free time, he enjoys making covers of popular songs to build a fan base for social media networks. He believes that music has a meaning and purpose and it should be used to send positive messages while uplifting and inspiring all. Ray started working with Doanlie Nation last December, through his childhood friend “Sargeant,” who is currently based in North Carolina and Atlanta. He wishes to thank Juice, Stoute, Sargeant, Chris Rose, Shay Newton, King, Thp at Just Cool Records and all his fans for supporting him. This energetic and charismatic young man is on a mission to materialise his goals and aspirations. He plans to greatly influence the world with his music and to leave his stamp for future generations to follow. Island Signatures | 43
