Operation Triple Threat’s (OTT’s) four show production of Once On This Island in April was a treat missed by many as the turn out for all but the last show was much lower than last year’s which saw a packed house with sold out or almost sold out audiences for all five of its shows. One reason for this could’ve been that many were less familiar with this musical than Into The Woods whose film adaptation was released the previous year. However, the reduced audience didn’t diminish the wonderful talent displayed by the young actors. Anna Greenidge (Erzulie), Shadé Jacques (Ti Moune), Toni McIntosh (Asaka) and Chad Montplaisir (Agwe) really shone and gave stand out performances especially during Sunday’s final show. There were times during Saturday’s show that some of the cast’s voices sounded tired and there were several mistakes that were only noticeable as I was a member of the crew but overall each and every performance was filled with passion, great choreography , innovative costuming as well as beautiful make up and set design which brought the production to life. The standout moment for me would have to be their interpretation of “Rain” which not only took full advantage of the lighting capabilities of Frank Collymore Hall but was choreographed using recycled raincoats to create a stunning, emotive and entrancing visual and audial moment. The director, Janelle Headley, should be applauded for such a wonderful production and I hope she continues to encourage and facilitate young persons to “Sing! Dance Act!” and continue into the realm of musical theatre. Olivier Award-winning and eight-time Tony nominated Once On This Island is an intriguing, romantic fairy-tale. Set in the French Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, it follows the story of Ti Moune as she goes on her quest to prove that love—and hope, is stronger than death. This one-act musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty is based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Trinidadian-born Rosa Guy, The show includes elements of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid. Operation Triple Threat: Sing. Dance. Act. (OTT) is a developmental performing arts programme for students between the ages of 7 and 21. OTT is a division of “Live-Breathe
