President’s Korner… by Bette Ewing Cheney What a bustling, beautiful, December month in Del Tura: cart parade, Christmas concert, cart caroling, gift giving to the needy, house and pool light contest, 200,000 light decorations sparkling, dancing and dazzling all at our front gate. Our community is alive with decorations, activities and cheer. This season brings me thoughts of the movie “Pay It Forward.” The plot revolves around a social studies teacher who gives an assignment to his Junior HS class to think of an idea to better the

world. One young boy, who leads a troubled life, originates the idea of “pay it forward” which works on the premise that requires someone to do a kind act for another, then that person passes on an act of kindness to another, then another, etc. In the movie, the acts of kindness set a new level of humanity that eventually gets national media coverage and comes back to the boy. This concept is celebrated by 86 countries around the world on April 28th as “Pay It Forward” day. Along with the Holiday season of giving, let’s make December as Del

Tura’s “Pay it Forward” season. Here are some simple ideas: Donate your old unused clothes to Goodwill. Take a neighbor’s yard waste out to the curb. Volunteer your time for a community project. Stop by and visit with a new neighbor or resident. Ask a new resident to sit at your table at coffee and engage them in the table talk. I’m sure that you can think of many more acts of kindness because Delturians are special people. Remember, “Smiles are contagious!”

Meet Your Candidates by Bette Ewing Cheney, HOA President Take an active role in your Homeowners Association by becoming a Director offering new ideas, suggestions, and solutions. The Board will have three director terms up for election in 2020. Applications are available through Bart DeGraaf and Bette Ewing-Cheney to be submitted to Bart who is our

Election Committee Chairman. The committee is currently accepting applications. In order for candidates to have their nominations published in the January TOWER, they must first have an approved application on file with Bart AND submit a brief resume/platform (150 word limit) and a candidate’s picture prior to the Dec. 9th TOWER deadline for articles. Candidates can submit both items directly to Pam Price TOWER

Editor at TowerEdit@yahoo.com. The January Tower “MEET YOUR CANDIDATES” article will be an important opportunity for our Association Members to know their candidates before submitting their votes. Final nominations from the floor will also be accepted at the January Board meeting, with nominations closing at the adjournment of the meeting.

Who Can Help You With Your Estate Plans?

You may know you want to leave something behind for the next generation, but, if you’re like many people, you’re less sure about how to do it. Simply put, you need an estate plan. But who can help you create one? A comprehensive estate plan can be complex, involving various areas – investments, laws and taxes – so you may well need assistance from more than one source. Specifically, you may need to work with a team consisting of a financial advisor, an attorney specializing in estate planning, and a tax professional. Putting together such a team may take some effort, but it doesn’t have to be as complex as your estate plan itself. Your first contact may be the professional who knows you on the deepest level, and that’s likely to be your financial advisor. If you’ve worked with a financial advisor for years, you’ve probably shared your hopes and dreams, as well as all your personal financial information. Yet, 64% of Americans report never having discussed estate goals and legacy plans with their financial advisors, according to the recent Leaving a Legacy survey commissioned by Edward Jones. This figure may indicate a lack of urgency on the part of investors. But it might also show a lack of awareness on just how much a financial advisor can help with planning your estate. Since your financial advisor is likely the one who helped you position your key investments – IRA, 401(k), etc. – into your overall financial strategy, it’s likely this same person can assist you in integrating these types of assets into your estate plans. Furthermore, your financial advisor is likely well-connected to tax and legal professionals and can help find the ones who are the best fit for you in developing other key parts of your estate plan. For example, a tax professional can help you determine if your estate is subject to estate or inheritance taxes, and, if so, can suggest strategies to reduce the amount of taxes owed. Also, a tax professional can advise you on the possible tax consequences of the investments and retirement accounts you wish to leave to your heirs. And a legal professional can help you create a will, living trust, health care directive and any other arrangements you might need in place to carry out your estate plans. Keep in mind that the lines between tax and legal advisors can sometimes become blurred, as some lawyers who focus on estate planning can handle some of the same tasks as a tax professional. But, in any case, your financial advisor is almost certainly going to be the one with the broadest view of your needs and wishes, and the greatest understanding of what you have wanted to accomplish with your wealth throughout your life. If you’re familiar with football analogies, you could say your financial advisor is the quarterback of your team, helping guide the other professionals in carrying out their specialties. So, the next time you meet with your financial advisor, consider bringing up the topic of estate and legacy planning, assuming it isn’t already part of your discussions. And don’t wait too long. You can’t predict the future, but you should do whatever you can to prepare for it.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice.

Reflections “Holiday Blessing”

By: Dianne J. Roderick

I am so thankful for the many family holiday gatherings of the past: sitting around the table and expressing the many blessings that surrounded me each precious year. Funny, how we realize more and more with every passing year, the significance of family and friendship, each one having more of an impact on our hearts as each year passes. If only we had realized then how swiftly the years actually would be. How could we? Who knew that these golden years would come so quickly? We were young and so was everyone else. Sure there were bumps in the road, but for the most part everyone seemed to be doing well. So year after year we set the table

with very little changes in the seating arrangements because that was what we did. Grandpa Will, Grandma Rose, Uncle Joe, Cousins…everyone who had always celebrated were all expected to be at our blessed holiday feasts. Those were the greatest times! There were stories, continuous laughter, babies crying, and everyone trying to be heard all at once. Yes, it was a madhouse but was it ever a wonderful state of chaos! I close my eyes and picture the scene like it was yesterday and I can feel myself getting a bit giddy and my heart once again filling up with so much love. I remember thinking this is never going to end. Sadly, that was not a realistic way of thinking. It may be what we all wish in our hearts and

convince ourselves of, but all too soon we find out that life has other plans. We all become less naïve in this journey of life, not because we want to but because we need to. For it is within this journey we experience the things that help us to cope and get through each loss along the way. We realize that within this “circle of life” we continue to celebrate and give thanks for the loved ones that no longer sit physically with us on these days but feel blessed by the new life that surrounds us because of them. Happy Holiday Blessings, Everyone! Let’s all be thankful for the memories that are imprinted in our minds and on our hearts.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News I’m not sure if life is trying to pass us by or trying to run us over! The Good Timers have been on the go since the beginning of this year and at times we had to move out of our own way because of the many things we had going on. January a group of us went to the Shell Factory for dinner and to listen to the Del Prados. February we hosted the dessert table at Del Tura’s International Food Fair and we began Game Day. In March we went to see a play at the Cape Coral Cultural Park Theater and we also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day together. In April we had our annual Road Rally, our 1st Potluck Lunch & Games get together and then another play...this time at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater. In May we gathered together to bet

on our lucky horse at our annual Kentucky Derby Party. We finally slowed down during the summer months. Then in September we treated ourselves to lunch at The Captain’s Table in Fishermen’s Village and then a small group went to the Peace River Wildlife Center. October a few of us braved the hot weather and went to Octoberfest and we ended the month by solving the mystery on the Murder Mystery Dinner Train Ride. Ann Clanton did a fantastic job with organizing and executing that trip! Our monthly meetings and birthday luncheons are held all year long. As a group we also supported functions that are held at Del Tura. We enjoyed the Del Tura Repertory Company’s play, we went to see Art Keen in a play

at the Laboratory Theater and we partied with Kathy Aira at her annual LCR charity event! Next up is our Holiday Party on Monday, 9 December at the Fountain Grille Restaurant. If you’re single and haven’t joined this group yet you need ask yourself why not? Our next meeting will be held on December 3rd. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in the Poinciana Room. Socializing begins at 4:00 with the meeting starting at 4:30. All single Del Turians are encouraged to join us at one of our monthly meetings. The Good Timers want to wish everyone a very Happy and Peaceful Holiday Season! At the Hydrant

By Justine Fitzgibbons Hello everyone, allow me to introduce myself...my name is Sierra and I am a 13 month old, brindle and white, Chihuahua mix. I live with my human parents, Floyd and Mary Ann Light and to say that I’m spoiled would be an understatement. It all started for me about 8 months ago when I went to the dog park with my two brothers. We were running around (I really love to run) and having a good time, when two humans walked in without a dog. I thought it was a little strange for them to be at the dog park without a dog, but it wasn’t any of my business, so I just kept playing with my crazy brothers. I saw them sit down next

to the human we lived with and they were talking, so I ran over to see what was going on. The lady started talking to me and picked me up and held me. She seemed nice so I gave her a lick. Turns out that they did have a dog, but he got sick and he wasn’t with them any more. After a little while they took me home with them in their golf cart. They gave me my own crate, a soft fluffy bed, and a bunch of toys that I could chew on and pull the stuffing out of. I have to admit, it’s a pretty sweet deal. Since I’ve been with them, I’ve met a lot of nice people, like Steve and Sandy, Mike and Justine, Jack and Eileen, Bill and Nancy, Rod and Maureen and lots of other folks too. I’ve also met lots of great pups, like Gordon, Murphy, Jake, Bubba, Fin, Buddy, Josie, Ruby and Rico. Sometimes I get to run with the big dogs, which I love to do because I can out-run all of them and It’s fun to watch them get frustrated trying to catch me. The Dog Park is a great place to meet new friends and get some much needed exercise. Hope to see you there soon. Love and sloppy kisses Sierra!

Del Tura Resident Earns Gold At National VA Festival Of The Arts The Veterans Administration Festival of the Arts wrapped up recently in Kalamazoo MI and Del Tura resident Steve Banko came home with a Gold Medal in the Inspirational Writing competition. Banko’s essay, “Love Must Survive War,” was written in response to a question that was posed to him after a speech he delivered at Bucknell University. The question was “what’s worth remembering about a war” and earned a first place finish in the local competition sponsored by the Bay Pines VA facility in St. Petersburg FL before earning gold in national judging.

Banko is a veteran of Vietnam combat where he earned the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars for Valor, and four Purple Hearts during his 16 months of fighting. His book, For No Good Reason, is loosely

based on his combat experiences, was published in 2016. The Festival of the Arts is an annual event and attracted more than 3700 entries in writing, performance and art.

HOLIDAY CART PARADE – MONDAY, DECEMBER 9TH 6:00 PM (Rain Date Tuesday, 10th) It’s time once again to decorate your golf carts for one of Del Tura’s most fun Holiday traditions. It is amazing to see how creative our residents can be. Last year there were more than 25 carts in the parade and so many people cheering us on from all around the community…It was great to see all the support! Erv and I will be leading the parade again this year and we have a very special guest at the very end to really get this Christmas spirit off to a great start! We will have PRIZE MONEY for best decorations that night! Start planning early and make sure your batteries are fully charged! The parade participants, and any residents who would like to join us, will meet in the Starlight Ballroom at 5:00 pm for a social hour and pre-parade camaraderie. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share and bring your drinks. We will have plates, napkins and utensils. The parade will begin at 6:00 pm. Of course we also welcome bicycles, motorcycles, etc., whatever glows…goes! If you need help with hooking up lights, you may call Jim Stenzel 239-826-0524 or Gerry Benjamins 239-322-9866. It is up to you to get the things you need and to do the decorating…that’s half the fun! Don’t wait until the last minute for their help. A map and approximate times the parade will reach your location will be printed in this Tower and posted at all the pools. Please note…the parade will end at the corner of Las Palmas Norte and San Gabriel this year. It’s a long parade and we lose some of the carts by then. All we need now is to have you join in and have fun! For more information or ideas, call Erv or Linda Storma at 239-997-9066. Thanks again for your support. Hope to see you then!

Bette will be available at each Tuesday coffee sales dates starting at 7:30am. Those people on Bette’s ticket sales list will be called in order from that list ONLY. SPORTS & EXERCISE 18 Hole Women’s Golf Association by Carol Marra Steve and I have just returned from a trip to Italy where they were enjoying fall. Remember leaves turning colors and windows open at night? Being able to sit outside in the afternoon, but maybe needing a sweater? Well, now we are back, along with many more of our northern friends, to the endless summer known as Florida! It must be time to play more golf and start our tournament season! In fact, we will play our Club Championship on the 11th, 12th and 18th of this month. Winners will be posted in the Dungeon and trophies given out at the Awards Banquet January 11th. We had our second shoot-out qualifier on November 5th. The third qualifier will be January 16th. The calendar year will end with a luncheon, election of officers and general meeting on December 19th. Ryan has started clinics with times and sign up sheets in the Pro

Shop. Interestingly, the clinic on hitting the driver was full with a waiting list. There was still room on the chipping and putting clinics. Think about how you play. Unless you are among the few who hit very long drives it is probably taking you three to get on or near a par 4. You need to know how to pitch, chip and putt. How many times have you gotten near a par 4 in 3 and walked away with a 6 or the dreaded 7, the game breaking 8? Two chips and two putts will do it every time! You can make up for a lot of shortcomings in your game by improving your skills around the green. “Drive for show and putt for dough” has a lot of truth to it. Learning to hit the driver as well as possible is important. But, it does not take strength or even youth(!) to play well around the greens. No Holes-in-one to report but, the season is young! Have you just moved to Del Tura and been thinking about

joining our Association? Please call Kay Rolader at (239) 2924964. She can give you the information you will need to become a part of our group. This is my last Tower article for the 18 Hole Association. It has been a pleasure to keep everyone informed on what is going on and to highlight the achievements of our players. I could not have done this job without the help of the Pro shop, especially Paul, Ryan, Steve and Mike. I appreciate your breaking down some of the many rule changes we have had over the last few years. And, of course, many thanks to my Editor in Chief, Steve. He makes sure all my “Ts” are crossed and my “Is” are dotted. I will now turn this column over to Margie Blackwell. I hope Margie enjoys writing it as much as I have. Have the best of holidays and a glorious New Year. 2020 will bring us more tournaments, more fun and laughs on and off the golf course. Sounds good to me!

Tennis at Del Tura 2 FREE LESSONS IN DECEMBER The Del Tura Tennis Association hosts a number of activities throughout the fall and winter season at our tennis courts situated by the North Pool. Just show up during these times and you will automatically be included in the group. Two more free lessons for beginners or people who need to refresh their skills are being offered December 3rd and

December 10th from 10:00 to 11:00 am. On December 15th, we are hosting an Up and Down tennis afternoon to DTTA members followed by a Potluck dinner. Sign up in the screened room. The intra-mural leagues for Men’s A – Mondays at 10:00 am, Men’s B1 – Thursdays at 8:00 am, and Mixed Doubles on Saturdays at 10:00 am are well under way. Our travelling teams playing at home in December are: December 4th – 10:30 am 3.5 Bronze team December 11th – 10:30 am 3.5 Minus team

December 11th – 12:30 pm Bronze team December 12th – 12:30 pm Copper team December 12th – 12:30 pm Swift team December 18th – 10:30 am 3.5 Minus team Please feel free to come and watch and encourage our players. We wish you a wonderful Holiday Season and a great New Year. SPORTS & EXERCISE DTNHWGA By Justine Fitzgibbons Welcome back snowbirds! Happy Holidays and New Year! The fun and busy time of the season is here. Below is our schedule for the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. Please come to our Christmas Lunch and meeting on the 12th even if you don’t play golf that day . As in the past if you would like to put cash in an envelope, we will be donating it to the Heart Association in Gay Luders’ name. Gay was an active long-time member of DTNHWGA.

Maureen Monroy is our Rules Chairperson. She is going to invite Ryan to our meeting to explain the scoring change starting in January 2020. Maureen thinks the best way to handle this change is through Ryan as it is best explained by a Pro. If you would like to join the Women’s Nine Hole league, please contact Kathy Klein. I want to thank Ann Abramczyk for writing our articles for the past year. Ann has resigned due to other commitments. Sandy Gove is going to be the new reporter. Our league started on October 29 at Bowland in Cape Coral where we have been ever since our North Fort Myers alleys burnt down. It’s too early to worry about who is in first place but I will list a few highlights from the first two weeks. High games: Frank Barilla: 234; Tom Demshak: 220; Paul Smith 200; Diane Smith: 203 ; Janet Huss: 189; Denise Rose 179

High series: Tom Demshak: 585;Paul Smith 584; Joe Pollack: 483; Diane Smith: 542; Janet Huss: 521; Denise Rose: 493. The best highlight was that I think everyone had a good time! All would like to thank the board, made up of: Dave Csuy, Pres., Glenn Tointon, V.P., MaryKay Tointon, Sec., Denise Rose, and Substitutes, for putting together this twelve team league. Much time went in to balancing each team.

Bowling DEL TURA BOWLING LEAGUE INCREASES TO TWELVE TEAMS Four years ago the Del Tura bowlers numbered six three person teams. Each year since we have increased by two teams and now number twelve four person teams. With so much interest we have also added some pretty good bowlers (yours truly not included of course). Averages now range from about 100 to the upper 180’s.

A Craft Fair Thank You We would like to thank all the wonderful people who volunteered to help us with the Craft Fair this year. Betty Scheetz headed up the raffle, which brought in $626. Susan Bell handled the bake sale, with proceeds of $903 – all going to the Holiday Baskets this year. We served a yummy Sloppy Joe lunch, with proceeds of $788. We want to thank Jim Hinrichs for

taking over the parking crew. He had many helpers and they did a fantastic job! The vendor helpers assisted the vendors unload and load up their merchandise and gave them breaks throughout the day. Our vendors really appreciated the help they provided! We would especially like to thank our husbands, Bill Nezamis and Al Wells, for encouraging us, cooking

the sloppy joes and helping out in many other ways. Also, thanks to Fred and the office staff for renting the additional tables that we needed, and to the maintenance crew who set up all the tables. It was a huge success and it’s all because of you! Thank you, thank you, thank you to ALL of you! Kay Nezamis & Wendy Wells, Chairs.

Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop Our Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop is making great strides! We have tackled three challenges and are currently working on our fourth. Our first challenge was to observe an area within our home, then to describe it, trying to give life to inanimate objects, without showing your own feelings (ref. “Alexa” and “The Recliner” in last

month’s issue). Our second challenge (see “Old Barn” to follow) is to observe something outdoors, again giving life to inanimate objects, but this time show your reactions to your observations. And the third challenge (see “Unexpected Journey” to follow), is to observe an outdoor area- this time, do not give life to inanimate

objects. Rather, describe what you see in detail, using your senses of sight, smell and sound, and draw your reaction to your observations. Our Workshop currently has seven contributing members, and an additional two new members who are currently working on their first assignments. We will meet on December 12th and the 26th.

OLD BARN By: Nancy Davy The barn stands, tall and imposing against the naked fields. It feigns indifference. Faded whitewash struggles to cling to its exterior. The door gapes open, great mouth undefended against the onslaught of bitter icy wind. Snow swirls and eddies, settling upon the dirty floor, broken planks, and rusted cans full of rusted nails. Odd bits of lumber, sorted by size, are stacked against the back wall. A couple vintage license plates, enamel old and crackled. Flower pots, tipped over, spew their dirt upon each other, and the garden tools lie tumbled in a heap. A soft pair of flowered gardening gloves, carefully hung on a hook, wait for their next summons. But the hands will come no more. A crack of sunlight through broken windowpane falls on shattered glass and dusty boxes and seems to be absorbed there, not radiating far enough to penetrate the dark and musty corners. A silence so profound that you can almost reach and touch it. The smell of dust and driveway dirt. A can of gasoline. Rafters, dry and brittle, are spattered by the swallows that frequent them to roost. Abandonment in wooden form, this structure stands, a shelter now to barn cats, darting transients that seek its darker depths. Forgotten but forgiving, in a pose of patient waiting, the tired beams support each other bravely. As the wind howls through the rafters, an ache forms in my heart. It is the chilling sound of loneliness.

By Jack Blevons HOA sponsored Thursday Night Bingo started on October 17th and as of this writing on November 4th, we have had just two nights that we were able to play, the 17th and 24th of October because the ballroom was being set up for the craft-sale on the 31st. . So, this coming Thursday, November 7th, will just be our 3rd night of playing. So far, the attendance has been smaller than what we like but we also know that a

lot of snowbirds still have not returned back home here but hopefully they will soon. Then usually the attendance drops off a little in December because people do travel back north for the Christmas holiday to spend time with family. Then in January, the crowds do get larger which means bigger payouts to the lucky winners which everyone likes. Our games this year again are all easy to play games like last year which made people happy & we do plan on making some changes to play some new
