LANDING’S ARTISTS
Nearly everyone who lives in The Landings has shopped at the Publix Super Market at The Landings. Many of us more than once per week. However, during the COVID-19 crisis, we have probably limited our grocery shopping to once per week or less, and, recently added masks and gloves. No matter the frequency of shopping lately, we are certain that most landings residents are aware of the hard work, long hours and diligent service that Publix employees have put forth to provide us with the products necessary to get through this pandemic. We are especially grateful that the Publix folks have performed their hard work with their usual smiles and great attitude despite the trying times. Some of us thought we should show our thanks with a token of appreciation. Therefore, Landings resident and artist, Marie McHugh created a poster that is now displayed inside the Publix

Jim Goldman was recently elected to serve a one-year term on the LMA Board of Directors. He comes to this board with many years of experience in management. As a young man, Jim attended Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, before graduating from Duquesne University in School of Law in Pittsburgh and passing the bar. He spent his first six years learning the ropes, before going out on his own with a fellow lawyer. Ultimately, he formed his own Pittsburgh law firm, Weisman and Goldman, PA, where he was the Senior Partner. He became a trial lawyer specializing in cases related to personal injury and workman’s compensation. An Attorney for 34 years, he retired to his home in The Landings in 2004. Before retirement, Jim was active in the Pittsburgh community..This father of four boys was not only assistant scout master, he also served as coach

President’s Column By Norman Olshansk, LMA President
We sure are going to remember March and April 2020 in The Landings: stay at home orders, social distancing, closed South Gate, closed down Landings Racquet Club, virtual Passovers and Easter, and socializing by Zoom and FaceTime. But, if you were going to be anywhere during the virus outbreak, The Landings was a good place to be. We have great places to get out and walk, beautiful landscaping with an abundance of flowering plants in bloom, the nature trail with waterfront views, and opportunities for fishing and kayaking. I a m m o s t p ro u d a n d a p p re c i a t i v e o f o u r n e i g h b o r s helping each other by sharing masks, supplies and shopping for homebound or medically c o m p ro m i s e d re s i d e n t s . I n deed, we have a friendly and caring community. As we enter May, there will continue to be restrictions. If you or someone near you is in need of an extra hand, shopping assistance or a friendly call, please let us know. We are here for each other and ready to help. The closing of the South Gate was a very difficult decision. The Safety and Security Committee made the recommendation to the LMA Board to temporarily close the gate due to virus concerns. Even though, on the surface, the threat from outsiders walking into the South Entrance Gate w o u l d s e e m m i n i m a l , t h e re was great concern expressed by
residents who live close to the gate. Older, frail and medically compromised residents have been fearful to the point of panic due to the virus. Many thought that LMA was not doing enough to respond to the virus threat. The Board, on a split vote, decided to temporary close the South Gate. We recognize that it has caused significant inconvenience to those who regularly used the gate for exit and entry to The Landings. We had to weigh the fears of one group of residents over the inconvenience of others. Hopefully, the gate will be reopened soon, as the threat of the virus ends. The next major issue that the board of LMA will face is the beginning of our roads project. We will be resurfacing sections of the roads over the next several years. We finally have received the engineering studies and requests for proposals are being sent to road contractors. We hope to select a contractor and begin the work on Peregrine Point Drive as soon as possible. More on this project in the June issue of the Eagle. During this time of year and throughout the summer, we will be experiencing more rain and higher tides. Please be aware that there are sections of the nature trail that are covered in water at high tide, so be prepared when you hike or ride your bikes on the trail. The Safety and Security Committee has been reviewing input that was received at the Town Hall meeting in February and will be making recommendations to the Board over the next few months. I want to thank our residents for being so understanding of the challenges we have faced during the virus and want you to know that your Board is always appreciative of your input and suggestions. We look forward, as soon as possible, to a resumption to our normal activities.

LMA Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt Due to the coronavirus, this month‘s virtual board meeting was held on the Internet using Zoom. Only board members were allowed to participate in the meeting. A few board members physically attended the meeting in the Racquet Club meeting room. Each board member was seated at their own table spread throughout the room in keeping with social distancing guidelines. LMA President. Norm Olshansky, announced the following during his president’s report: • N ew Landing’s Manager, Steve Brockenshire of Argus was welcomed to his first official LMA meeting. He’s had several meetings with Olshansky and is quickly becoming familiar with The Landing’s properties, policies and documents. • During the virus crisis, board members were asked to be in contact more often and especially look for ways to keep the community safe. • Those present were reminded The Landing’s Racquet Club operates as a separate organization with their own board. • As a point of order, all precedent setting decisions and creation of new policies are determined by The Board after committees evaluate issues and bring recommendations. • S u p p o r t y o u r n e i g h b o r s through this challenge by making friendly contact with them by phone, email or text. Olshansky noted a few residents have even created virtual “Happy Hours”.
lowing: • All FPL issues have been resolved with the exception of one LED issue which will be resolved soon. • Referred the Inspired Living grass cutting issue to Sarasota County who promised to take action on this soon. • An issue regarding damages to a vehicle during a barcode sticker removal has been resolved. • T here is still no response to multiple letters sent to residents who damaged entry gates. Three letters have now been sent. • Completed daily community drive-throughs seeking issues which need to be referred to Committee Chairs.
SAFETY AND SECURITY Chairman Michael Knupp reported the following: • Wipes, gloves, and distancing guidelines have been given to gate security in order to greet residents, guests and vendors safely. The committee suggests limiting unnecessary interaction with guards. They also recommend residents follow the CDC guidelines regarding guests during the health emergency. • In the last 12 weeks, 12 speeders have been identified by the Traffic Hawk system. One speeder was caught twice, traveling in excess of 40 miles an hour. Notification letters are being sent. • Knupp reported a successful Townhall Meeting though attendance was low. The two main topics were Entry Gates and Speeding. Residents are concerned about pedestrian traffic coming through the South Gate. A motion was made to temporarily close the South Gate which will include posting signs that indicate the temporary closing is due to concerns about the coronavirus subject to approval by the fire marshal. After much discussion the motion passed 5-3.
FINANCE REPORT Treasurer, Dick Bayles reported the following regarding LMA finances. • It’s to early in the year to make an estimate of year-end results. • There are an unusually high number of outstanding annual assessments. Because of the coronavirus crisis, Bayles suggested waiting at least a month before pursuing aggressive collections. He expects all assessments will eventually be paid.

Jim Goldman stood on 15 acres of prime property. Jim headed up a fight to save that school, and to use its building as a much-needed Library and Community Center. He also convinced the West family to donate $50,000 to renovate that building in exchange for naming it after their daughter. Jim and Sandy Goldman were married in 1999. She brought three girls into their blended family, while Jim brought his four sons. All were grown by that time, and all had known each other for many years. Today Sandy and Jim are the proud grandparents of twelve grandchildren and two Great Grands! They bought their home at The Landings in 2001 and were told that Woman’s Exchange – now called simply The Exchange – was the best place to hunt for furniture. They went shopping there and loved it!.Before long, both were volunteering one day a week, and Jim soon found himself serving as Chairman of the Board. That lasted for three years, and Jim is rightfully proud of the

organization..“The Exchange does so well!.They give all those wonderful grants to young people!” Along with Henry Rhodes, Jim helped create The Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation. In its first year, the foundation adopted six children for Christmas who were battling cancer. The second year the foundation adopted twelve. Today, the foundation serves over 150 kids at holiday time plus their siblings, supplying gifts and Christmas dinner. The child’s siblings are included because when illness strikes a family, everyone suffers. Henry Rhodes continues to head up this wonderful organization which makes such a difference to children in need. Jim has also served as President of The Landings Racquet Club. Both he and Sandy played tennis for years, but neither plays any longer because of traitorous knees. Today, Jim and Sandy still volunteer once a week at the Exchange and remain very involved in the Holiday Foundation...

Kim Cooper is a photographer who I met at shows of The Landings Artists and I was always intrigued by her images of women and children in South America as well as Cuban city scapes. Before moving to The Landings, Kim lived in New York City, Connecticut and Santa Rosa, CA. At some point, she and her husband left New York to live on a boat for several years. Eventually she wanted to live somewhere on the east coast and they chose Sarasota to settle down. They own a business in town, “Wired Rite Systems” selling electrical systems for work trucks. Kim is not only a photographer but also a writer with a background in anthropology. She has worked in advertising and broadcast. Early on in her career she was an assistant director for videos for “Saturday

her camera and was in charge of the “Good Living” section of the newspaper. During that time, she also took numerous trips to very remote places in South America where she went to set up various projects in villages. With her camera always at her side she photographed the children of these communities. Back in Connecticut she began to show her photographs in galleries. Today she writes and has some photographs featured in Venü magazine. Kim is a very active and energetic woman. She covers car rallies and four times a year participates in them as a pilot and driver in the Concours d’Elegance races. She and a friend drive his antique 1961 Mercedes 300 L. She plays tennis, golfs, fishes, boats and cycles. She loves all outdoors activities. As a photographer she is always looking for new ways to present her work. Her latest photographs are now reproduced on metal which greatly enhances color and depth. She also uses acrylic blocks for another kind of display for images. Kim tells me that she loves living at The Landings because everyone is so open.

BIRDS IN OUR BACKYARD…
and beyond By Maralyn Kaufman-David, Environmental Committee Chairperson In these pandemic times and following several months of articles and great photographs focused on our local birds (thanks to Robert Manteiga), I thought some perspectives on birds beyond our backyard might be of interest for our community for this issue of The Landings Eagle. After all, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are almost 10,000 different species of birds, 900 of which are on the verge of extinction and 4 of which have been ruled as extinct in the wild. But, before we ‘leave’ our backyard, I think we would all agree that The Landings provides very beautiful surroundings in which to be ‘staying home and social distancing’. The extra time we have is well spent taking quiet walks and observing all our birds, butterflies, bugs, bunnies, turtles, squirrels, raccoons, and black snakes (racing across the grass … or hanging out in the flower pot by the front door!!). And, beyond the sightings, the sounds of all these creatures seem to surround us with especially loud and clear tones within the quietness of our streets. Next time you’re out on your walk, run, or bike ride or relaxing at home, remember to listen while you watch and try to identify some birds by their call. Maybe you will see the roseate spoonbill that seems to pass overhead by my house around 4:30 pm almost every day! Luckily, with modern access to the Internet, etc., we can go beyond our backyard and virtually explore our aviary world – a mind-stretching activity to do while socially distancing. In doing just that, I came across two topics that might get you started on this virtual exploration. Like the pandemic…the first topic is about being strange or unique. And, the second topic may be useful to many of you who are now at-home teachers during the pandemic; that is, the second topic started as a way to teach students about the importance of birds for the environment 126 years ago! The first topic, about the weird descendants of dinosaurs in our modern world, is described in an article entitled “25 Weirdest Birds You Never Heard of But Need to Know” by John Wenz and Daisy Hernandez (https:// www.popularmechanics.com/ science/animals/g25749619/ weirdest-birds/). You actually may know some of the 25 species (puffin, frigate bird, blue-footed booby, peregrine falcon- noted for its speed), but how about the Kakapo, the Rufous Potoo,
the Scarlet I’iwi, or the Shoebill Stork? Take a look…hope you find the website interesting. The second topic is about three specially designated ‘bird days’ – and – mark your calendar for the two of them coming up in early May. The oldest of the special bird holidays is Bird Day (https:// nationaldaycalendar.com/birdday-may-4/), which started as a teaching opportunity and has been celebrated annually on May 4th in the United States since the late 19th century. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Bird Day was established by Charles Babcock in 1894. Mr. Babcock, the superintendent of schools for a town in Pennsylvania, initiated the observation of this holiday as a way to educate students about how important birds are to the environment and that birds should be celebrated and enjoyed. In 1901, Babcock published book about this educational program entitled “Bird Day: How To Prepare For It”. Maybe you can work something about birds into your at-home teaching on May 4th! Perhaps the most well-known bird holiday is National Bird Day, which has been celebrated annually on January 5th for more than a decade and which coincides with the annual Christmas Bird Count. The purpose of this bird holiday is to bring attention to the plight of our feathered friends, particularly birds that are captive and those that are not native to the United States. The third special bird day is World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), an awareness-raising campaign that is celebrated biannually on the second Saturdays in May and October (coming up on May 9, 2020). The WMBD highlights the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats and draws attention to the ecological importance of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. This year, the theme of WMBD (https://www.worldmigratorybirdday.org/2020/ birds-connect-our-world) is aptly designated as “Birds Connect Our World”. Although many of the on-site activities of these bird events will be missing this year…the awareness of the importance of birds and the opportunity for all the world to enjoy and protect this wonderful aspect of nature can be upheld by educating ourselves and others and taking the free moments you have to look around and enjoy.

Shop Local and Support Your Community By Nicole Kenedy From store closures to stayat-home orders, the worldwide spread of the novel coronavirus has left consumers struggling to get the products they need from their usual sources. Racquet Club News
Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner
President’s Report By Dick Bayles
You were notified by e-mail that your Board opted to close the Club in early April in what some members thought was an abundance of caution. I am hopeful that by the time you read this, some Club operations
may be open or about to open – at least those that do not involve groups and when safe distancing is available. We have taken the opportunity to do a lot of maintenance work that is difficult when the Club is in operation – shampooing the Fitness Center carpet, powerwashing decks, walkways and canopies. We also got the pool northern wall finished just before the shut-down. While it took a while, the result is, in my opinion, a real upgrade to the landscaping. Rudy Blohm, Edvin, and Hans did an outstanding job and at a minimal cost. We will redo some of the landscaping above the new wall when operations resume. It has taken us a long time to solve our long-standing drainage problems in that area.
A couple of members have asked if the Club will be refunding a portion of the Annual Assessment considering the temporary closing of the Club during the COVID-19 crisis. The bulk of our expenses are fixed; the costs of running irrigation, doing lawn, court, pool and other maintenance, insurance, etc. continue. We are also paying our full-time staff, who are doing maintenance projects that are difficult to do when the Club is in normal operation. As a non-profit organization, the Club operates on a “zero” margin and, therefore, we cannot issue refunds for a portion of the Annual Assessment. I trust that you have stayed well during this once-in-a-century experience. Keep safe!
May 2020 The first half of April was very unusual for us as the Club was closed due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. Even though there were no members around, the staff was here working on projects. We were busy cleaning
Happiness is…New Horizons While the end of this school year may not look or feel like past ones, the commitment of Jerry Williams, owner of Abel’s Ice Cream to honor his outgoing seniors hasn’t wavered. “Every year members of our staff are some of the best and brightest in the graduating class, and 2020 is no different,” said Williams. “One of the most frequent comments we receive on reviews is about the friendliness and fun our employees exemplify. What a credit to these young people. We are thankful to be represented so well.” Everyone has their favorite Abel’s Ice Cream flavor, including the employees, so we had to ask! Lilah, who plans to major in Nuclear Engineering, is a fan of Cookies ‘N Cream
(Scrumptious Cookie flavored ice cream with crushed chocolate cookies in every bite! It’s a staple for a reason!) Chloe, a future business management student, said her go to is Elephant Ears (Vanilla ice cream swirled with peanut butter & large chocolate chips.) Dana, who’s going to study criminology said, “I know it’s basic, but our Cookie Dough (Sweet Cookie flavored ice cream loaded with chunks of cookie dough and sweet chocolate chips) is the best I’ve ever had.” The students have fond memories of their experience at Abel’s, including funny interactions with customers and even their boss. “Jerry is always trying to make paper towels into the trash can but misses 9/10 times,” Dana laughed.

Chloe
Although times may feel a bit uncertain, Williams is confident in the future. “These students are looking forward to new experiences and meeting challenges headon. I couldn’t be more proud of them.” We want to join Jerry and the entire Abel’s staff in wishing the best of luck to the Class of 2020. Come by to enjoy our team’s favorite flavors, featured throughout the month. Abel’s Ice Cream is located at 1886 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota in the

and organizing the Clubhouses and Fitness Center. The maintenance staff put a lot of miles on the pressure washer cleaning things we try not to do when there are members around. They even pressure washed the planter boxes down by the tennis courts. It was very different for us not having members here, but we certainly managed to get a lot of things done. Beginning May 1st, the Guest Fee enters its new summertime rate. Guests of members using the pool, Fitness Center or tennis courts will be charged a $10 fee per person, when using the Club before noon and $5 after noon. This rate will continue until November 1st when the fee will remain $10 throughout the day until May 1st. Guests residing under a member’s roof (in-house guests) will not be charged a fee if the member has registered their guests in advance with the Tennis Pro Shop. Also, on May 1st our “Peak Time” policy comes to its seasonal end. Now reservations can be made two days in advance for prime-time courts (8:00 AM to 12:00 PM) as long as there aren’t more guests on the court than members. Please call me if you have any questions about our court reservation or guest policies. As we have done for many years now, The Landings Racquet Club will offer a summer membership to those living in The Landings who aren’t already members. For a onetime $400 fee, during the months of June through September, your family will have full privileges throughout the facility. You will have access to the tennis courts, Fitness Center, our wonderful pool that is cooled to 84 degrees, use of the well-stocked lending library, as well as member rates on tennis lessons with our Tennis Director, Adrian Moghina. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Memorial Day BBQ is still up in the air. If the event is going to happen, it will be held on Monday, May 25th. I will keep you posted via email as things unfold. The menu will be the same as we do every year; however, the room setup might need to be modified to allow more space between members. As usual, military veterans, the guests of honor, will be complimentary. Please register in the Pro Shop for the event. The sign-up sheet is on the counter.

News from the Court By Adrian “Mo” Moghina
During, this Coronavirus Pandemic hopefully you all have been able to somehow stay active and get some effective exercise. I was happy to see Roger Federer introduce the “wall challenge”. Hitting on the wall when I was a little kid is how I fell in love with tennis. I was around nine years old when my uncle bought me a five-dollar racquet from K-Mart. Like most kids, I had lots of energy, so the tennis racquet and ball were very stimulating for my eyes, hands and feet. I started to dribble the ball with the racquet around the house and outside. The challenge of hitting a tennis ball back and forth against a wall was very exciting. It was even more exciting when I challenged myself to hit a particular target on the wall. I think practicing on the wall will also help you to improve your concentration, racquet control, consistency, footwork and accuracy. But the most important part is that it will really benefit your timing. If you put a square or rectangle target on the wall with chalk or tape and try to hit it, you will get the most benefit. It takes really good timing to make consistent contact with the strings pointing toward the
intended target. The other way to improve your tennis off of the tennis court is to shadow swing. Practice your neutral stance shadow swing the most. This is the most important stance to give you consistency and confidence. This is the same stance you would be in if you were riding a skateboard, surfing, golfing or swinging a baseball bat. When you practice your swing, don’t just push or guide the racquet. Instead, fire your legs and hips by pushing and pressing on the ground with your back foot to shift the weight forward to the front foot. This will give you the necessary momentum to accelerate your arm and racquet correctly. Whether you are serving or hitting ground strokes, acceleration is the key to good solid racquet control. Also, when you practice your shadow swings, have a visual goal of aiming to a particular part of the court, like cross court, down the middle, or down the line. To also help you work on your footwork, place a couple of balls on the ground as if you were hitting a forehand and a backhand. Now go back and forth by visualizing like you are actually hitting the ball, which will help you to organize your feet correctly to get in your neutral stance to hit strong forehands and backhands. Practicing shadow swings and hitting on the wall will help you in real match situations because you can then focus on watching the ball and timing it to hit a specific part of the court instead of focusing on how to hit the ball. Good luck and stay safe! Can’t wait to see you on the courts soon.
