2. Before a CART can be registered and allowed to operate in the Landings, the owner must provide proof of general liability insurance coverage on the CART, with the LMA and SubAssociations named as additional insured. In addition, the owner of the CART must sign a liability waiver provided by the LMA, including giving the LMA the right to post videos and photos of documented inappropriate operation of the vehicle.
3. All Golf Carts speed cannot exceed 20 MPH and must be equipped with efficient brakes, reliable steering, safe tires, a rear-view mirror and red reflective warning devices in both the front and rear in accordance with Florida law.
4. A Low-Speed Vehicle (different than a golf cart) is any four-wheel vehicle whose top speed is greater than 20 MPH but not greater than 25 MPH, including, but not limited to, electric vehicles. 6. Drivers must be at least 14 years old to drive on Landings streets.
7. Owner must provide the names and ages of all eligible and authorized drivers.
8. All drivers must always obey the posted speed limits and operate the CART in a safe and courteous manner. All passenger’s must be seated and not standing or hanging outside when the vehicle is in motion.
9. No towing behind the CART is allowed for any reason.
10. No CARTS can be operated between the hours of sunset and sunrise unless the operator possesses a valid driver’s license, insurance, and working headlights and taillights. Except for approved maintenance vehicles, no CARTS are allowed on the Nature Trail at any time.
PENALTIES
A confirmed violation of the rules outlined above, including failure to register a CART, may result in a fine and/or the suspension to operate the CART in the Landings or suspension of the vehicle entry stickers associated with all vehicles listed at the address on the CART registration application.
This is the third of a series of articles highlighting the work of special volunteers who help to make our community so special.
Mike and Chris Knupp both had successful careers in the Boston area prior to moving to Sarasota in 2012. Chris was a pediatric nurse practitioner. Mike was the CEO of an engineering company and was a selectman in his community of Littleton, Mass.
Their son was on the West Coast of Florida and when they visited him. They decided to look for a place in our area. When Chris saw The Landings (especially the tennis facilities) and was introduced to Kevin at the LRC, she knew right away that The Landings was where they wanted to live.
They bought a home, went back to Massachusetts and sold their northern home right away.
And as the saying goes, the rest is history.
Mike chairs one of the most important committees in The Landings. The scope of the committee’s responsibilities include:
1. Making sure that the security personnel are the right fit for The Landings and maintain quality service to the community
2. Keeping all of the equipment in good
working order, including the guard house, gates, video, radar, etc.
3. Responding to resident issues, especially when the roving guard is not on duty
4. Maintaining good relationships with local law enforcement who have to be called upon from time to time
5. Oversight of all issues related to safety, review and processing of speeding violations
6. Monitoring video on the nature trail
Mike is fortunate to have a very strong and involved committee. Judy Green is his primary go to person as well as Mike Donaldson, Bill
Whitman, Neil Goldman, Letitia Schulman, and Barbara Pendrell.
Mike and his committee put in an average of 25 hours a week or more working on security concerns for The Landings.
Mike and Chris have been heavily involved in The Landings. Chris has been active at the LRC and has served on their Board.
Mike currently helps with the Environmental, Roads, Lakes/Drainage and Maintenance Committees while also serving on The Landings Homeowners Board.
He previously served as chair of the Lakes and Drainage committees.
Mike is also an involved citizen within the general community. He was formerly the chair of the Conservation Foundation and currently sits on their board. He is also involved with the organization Start Preserving Our Bay.
Mike was quick to note how much he has learned from previous community leaders, especially about Lakes and Drainage. He gave a special shout out of appreciation to Jack Jost and Larry Lawrence.
We all have benefited from the involvement, dedication, knowledge, talent and that Mike Knupp has given to our community. For You

President’s Report
By Elida Ramberger
Although it’s only September, please keep in mind that LMA will be holding its annual member meeting in February at which time elections for board seats will be held. Presidents of each of the associations casts votes that represent all the members of the association. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the candidates, dates for this meeting will be announced, and convey your selection to your Association President.
Cali Lampton is looking for a few good women and men who are interested in becoming LMA board members. If you have any questions about the role or responsibilities, please contact Cali.
As many people know, Mary Shrewsbury notified me that she would be leaving Argus. It was because Mary was working to improve the service level LMA was experiencing that we continued our service contract with Argus.
With Mary’s departure, the board reviewed the evaluation conducted by the Community Property Needs Assessment Committee of Argus and other community property managers. The committee recommended that two companies would be able to meet our needs. One of the two had a slight advantage.
The board voted on September 14th to terminate our agreement with Argus effective October 31st and to engage Pinnacle Community Association Property Managers effective November 1st. The company is a locally owned company that serves small to medium sized homeowner associations. We look forward to their professional management and advice. You can meet Heather and Jason Hamilton at our October 6th board meeting. Heather will manage the meeting.
LMA would like to thank Jackie Massari for advocating for a better bulletin board location, the LRC
Board for allowing the LMA bulletin board to be mounted on the office building, and LRC staff for ordering and installing it. Keving has even added an LMA identifier to differentiate it from the LRC bulleting board.
On the committee news front, Massari is the chair for the Kayak Committee and has enlisted a few other neighbors to help in that effort. John Schmidt, chair for the Communications Committee, is pursuing systems that will enable our meetings to allow for and encourage remote participation. As we all know, the current technology is woefully inadequate. Turning the Lakeside Room into a conference room that handles hybrid participation may take some time but will serve the community well for the future. Again, thank you to the LRC board for supporting this effort.
The October 6th board meeting will be one of the more important meetings this year. Naturally, finances are involved. The board will be asked whether they support a levy for a special assessment. Notices of the resolution were sent to all members in advance of the meeting. The amount of the assessment was specified. During the October 6th meeting, if the resolution carries, the board will next vote to schedule payment(s). The second important item on the agenda is the budget for 2023.

LMA Meeting Notes By Trebor Britt
LMA President Elida Ramberger began the meeting by announcing the following during the president’s report:
• The minutes of the last LMA meeting were presented and approved.
• Board member Harry Moser, President and founder of the Reshoring Initiative was congratulated for being nationally recognized and quoted in a recent Wall Street Journal.
• Ramberger thanked her friends and neighbors who sent best wishes to her while she dealt with recent health issues.
• All committees are working on budget forecasts.
• The board is searching for a new Zoom meeting technician as their technician recently resigned.
FINANCE REPORT
Treasurer, Harvey Greller reported a surplus in July of $2,963 bringing the Year to Date (YTD) total surplus to $45,384. Underspending in Landscaping is a primary cause of the current YTD surplus.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance Committee chair, Judy Greene, reported the progress of two maintenance projects.
• A new contractor was hired to finish the North Gate roof at a cost of $4,600.
• A new lock is being installed on the Field Road gate.
COMMUNICATIONS
New board member John Schmidt updated the board on the Communications Consulting Group proposal.
A current client of the group, Turtle Rock Association was contacted and stated the consulting group delivered on everything they said they would.
Schmidt said the LMA could benefit in three ways.
1. Collection of $100-200,000 of fees from the telecommunications providers to have their equipment on the property.
2. Ensure that a new contract make the providers accountable for any potential liability issues.
3. To insure a high level of service from the providers.
After some questions and discussion, Schmidt said he would keep the board updated on progress.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Committee chair, Maralyn Kaufman-David, Ph.D. reported landscaping at the composting site will begin in late September. Once the bins etc. are installed the three-month long pilot study will be re-initiated. Because of the delay, the ‘grand opening’ will be rescheduled.
Future events include the possibility of a butterfly garden on The Landings nature trail and cleanup and conservation events.
LAKES/DRAINAGE
Committee chair, Jeff Smith reported operation of the north fountain in Carriage House Lake continues to be a challenge because of algae blooms. A certified laboratory test is going to be done on all lakes to establish a base level. Test results will be compared to algae issues in Carriage House Lake which are much worse than the other lakes.
There are some drainage issues in the Cloisters area. Immediate remediation is needed for a slope above the drainage ditch running under landings Boulevard at the intersection of Heron Way. It is a potential checkpoint for storm runoff from three other lakes. Soil, landscape fabric, densely planted “fountain grass“ and landscape stone will be added. A small, neglected sump will be cleared of overgrowth and its catch basin will be cleaned. The ditch will also be surveyed for impediments as drainage water levels seem to be higher recently. The committee is working with the Cloisters leadership on all these concerns.
After eight years of annual reports, progress is still not being made on the mandated remediation of Starling Lake. The Landings environmental consultant
will be meeting with the county environmental representative to discuss and try some new ideas.
Committee member Michael Knupp has in principle secured a $4,000 grant from START – Preserving our Coastal Waters. The grant will be focused on Heron Lake.
The second phase of the 2022 capital project is scheduled to start at the end of September. Rip rap installation and erosion remediation using fill, stone, landscape fabric and fountain grass will continue on three Lakes: Carriage House, Heron and Courtside. The third phase and final phase will include the removal of silt buildup proximate to the outflow vault and the placement of the silt into a Geotube to remediate erosion of the bank behind tennis courts one and two. The three projects are expected to cost $50,000, which is $10,000 less than what was approved.
KAYAK COMMITTEE
Landing’s resident Jackie Massari will chair the newly established Kayak Committee. The committee will be managing and organizing kayak activities. Committee members include Richard Goldsmith, Tina Greenberg, John McFetridge, Norm Olshansky, Paige Packman, and John Schmidt. Special thanks to Gary Kurnov and Allison Taylor for starting and expanding this activity for Landing’s residents.
A kayak outing has been scheduled for Saturday, October 29, at 9:30 AM. In addition, the LRC Lakeside Room has been reserved for Sunday, December 4, from 5-7 PM for an organizational meeting and social gathering. Current and future kayakers are welcome.
The committee is also investigating the possibility of installing a kayak launch in the opening near the kayak racks. Residents interested in participating in the kayak committee are asked to contact Jackie Massari at jackiemassari@yahoo.com.
LANDSCAPING
Landscaping chair, Paul Weiner reported the irrigation system has been repaired. It required a new pump and pressure tank at a cost of $6,293. Rain during the systems down time prevented any significant foliage loss.
Benderson Commercial Properties would like to build an island on Kestral Parkway North near the first entrance closest to Wells Fargo offices. If approved, they would like to have it completed by the time Publix has their Grand Opening. Paul Weiner met with them and suggested they would have to be responsible for liability as well as irrigation, foliage, and maintenance. The proposal would need to include a guarantee the entrance to the North Gate would never be closed in perpetuity and should the shopping center ever be sold; the maintenance would revert to The Landing’s. Part of the proposal would include installing a low wall sign which reads, Landing’s Shopping Center. Weiner estimated the LMA would save approximately $1,000 annually on landscaping maintenance costs. A legal proposal for board consideration from Benderson is in the works.
They will also offer a proposal to rectify parking lot dumpster issues by moving them away from the wall separating the parking lot of the shopping center to an area behind foliage along landings Boulevard, before the main gate.
He also reported 170 palm trees were trimmed at $22 per palm totaling $3,740.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Committee chair, Cali Lampton requested all residents to express their interest in serving on the board or recommend others they believe would qualify as board members. Several board positions will need to be filled moving forward. Lampton’s committee will be looking for potential board members for another two months.
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT NEEDS COMMITTEE
Harvey Camins reported the committee is actively meeting with potential management companies. The

Bob Fernander: A Decorated Military Life By Emma
There are many positive traits that define people who devote their lives to military service such as bravery and selflessness. One Landings resident, Bob Fernander, continues to embody the admirable characteristics he displayed during his military career today.
A highly decorated Veteran who exemplified undeniable courage as a helicopter pilot, Bob recently traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of the Honor Flight Network.
Growing up in a military family in Georgia, Bob always knew he wanted to pursue a military career. He attended Georgia Military Academy and the University of Georgia where he earned a degree in business administration and was a member of ROTC. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Education at Troy University.
After graduation, Bob began his military career as an Army Officer serving in an infantry unit in Germany. He then returned to the U.S. to attend flight school at Gary Air Force Base in Texas. Soon after graduation, Bob served in Korea as an Infantry Company Commander, then returned to the States and trained Vietnamese pilots to fly large helicopters. Bob then went to the Defense Language School in California and studied Spanish, which he used in Guatemala flying mapping support for the Inter American Geodetic Survey. Bob served in the Vietnam War for a year in the First Aviation
Brigade, then returned as Commander of the 101st Assault Helicopter Battalion in the 101st Airborne Division. PostVietnam, Bob worked at the Pentagon and Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana before retiring as a Colonel. After his military career, Bob worked in law, primarily as the Administrator for Sarasota law firm, Williams Parker.
Over the course of his impressive career, Bob received many honors and awards.
Among his military decorations are The Silver Star, The Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Bronze Stars, 27 Air Medals, the Purple Heart, and two Bronze Stars. Bob also wears the Combat Infantry Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Parachutes Badge, and Senior Aviator Wings. He was also ceremonially presented with a cane hand-carved with an eagle’s head for his Purple Heart. Though Bob feels grateful for his honors, he is more satisfied knowing he was welltrained and completed his job to the best of his ability.
Recently, Bob visited Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight Network, an organization that honors veterans by inviting them to spend a day in the nation’s capital. Each veteran receives a guardian for the trip who flies with them from St. Petersburg to D.C. and guides them around the monuments. Bob enjoyed seeing the sites with his guardian, Pat, and said “it was a great experience visiting
with my fellow Veterans and my fallen brothers on the Vietnam Wall.” His favorite part of the experience was the return when he and the other Veterans were greeted by bands, color guards, and more than 1,000 people dressed in red, white, and blue thanking them for their service. Bob expressed that the event was incredibly emotional, and for many Veterans, it was the welcome home they never received after the Vietnam War.
A resident of The Landings for 38 years, Bob is known by his neighbors as a humble man. He believes the people are what make The Landings a wonderful place to live and said he “never thought of living anywhere else.” Bob is a widower to his wife, Clementine, the father of two sons, Michael and Robert, and the grandfather of four grandchildren. He now shares his life with his partner, Anita. Bob is a volunteer at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the former President of The Military Officers Association of Sarasota. In The Landings, Bob was captain of the men’s tennis teams for 13 years and President of The Landings Racquet Club. Bob looks forward to hosting The Landings’ Veterans Day activities again this year.
Bob’s leadership and gallantry during his years of service did not go unrecognized. He devoted himself to his craft and prided himself on transferring the skills he learned in training to combat as an aviator. On another note, Bob is proud to celebrate a huge milestone this month -- his 92nd birthday! If you see him around The Landings, be sure to offer him birthday wishes.

Racquet Club News LRC President’s Report By Mayson Brooks
LRC MEMBERS: PLEASE READ THIS ARTICLE . This month’s article will be quite business like, apologies that I’m not gushing about the pro tennis tour this month. Thanks in advance for reading it.
LRC Board Seats: As you know, we have a seven-member board with three of the seats coming up for election at the end of the year.
I am leading the Nominating Committee to search/discuss with members who would like to run for the board. So, if you have an interest, please reach out to me (at MaysonBrooks@hotmail. com) so we can discuss the duties and your level of interest. I hope you’ll consider running for the board as it’s the volunteers of the club that make a difference.
LRC Building Exterior: As you have seen in Kevin’s email, the wood façade on our club buildings is over 30 years old and we spend thousands each year repairing/replacing wood rot in our humid climate. By the time you read this article, this project
should be in full swing. As we stated in the email, the costs are coming out of our reserve budget with zero assessments to our member.
LRC Emails : Speaking of emails, some of you have told me you’re not getting LRC emails.
For instance, if you did not get the one on the LRC stucco project or the one announcing Kevin’s wedding celebration, please check your “junk” folder on your email. If you don’t see it there, reach out to Kevin so he can ensure your correct email address is in his system.
Costs: Oh my, inflation is hitting our purses and checkbooks. Everything, and I mean everything, is going up in price. We are doing our best to control/limit our expenses at the club, but many things are out of our control. And some things we have no option – if the hot tub pump or AC unit dies, we must repair or replace it. We must maintain our courts, pool, gym, and buildings. Otherwise,
we decrease your enjoyment of our club and ultimately our home values. Everyone knows this, but I wanted to let you know Kevin and your board are doing everything we can to control our costs while maintaining our superb club.
And on a positive note - Kevin is getting married!
As you know, our GM, Kevin, is getting hitched after many years of numerous club members trying to get him set up on dates. We are having a club celebration for Kevin and his fiancé, Amy on Thursday, October 13th at 4 PM in the Lakeside Clubhouse. It’s a “bring an appetizer and BYOB event” so we hope to see you there to hear them tell the story of how they met.
Manager’s Report By Kevin Lechlitner News from the Court By Adrian “Mo” Moghina
The end of the year is approaching and now is the time to throw your hat in the ring to serve on the 2023 LRC Board of Directors. If you are interested, you must submit your name and a brief list of your qualifications to Kevin Lechlitner in the Tennis Pro Shop by December 5th.
There are three positions up for election. They are Mayson Brooks, Sue Lewis-Garrett and Rick Waller. If we have more people interested in being on the board than available openings, there will be an election at the LRC Annual Meeting in January of 2023.
By the time you read this, the annual court resurfacing project should be completed. Mother Nature cooperated with us very well this year. The rainy weather didn’t seem to delay our schedule at all. This year, courts 1 - 4 each received 1.5 tons of Har-Tru and kept their existing lines. Courts 5 – 8 each received over 4 tons of Har-Tru and new line tapes. Next year courts 1 – 4 will get the more thorough resurfacing. It alternates every year.
The 2022 USTA National Senior, Super Senior and Ultra Senior Father/ Son Clay Court Championships are on the schedule for November 15th through the 20th. Last year was a
great event with record participation. Based on the number of calls and emails I’ve received recently, players from around the country are excited about coming back to The Landings to compete for the coveted gold ball. If you are interested in being an ambassador during the event, please contact Ralph & Dee Ricapito at 941-927-6261.
Due to the availability of all the online social media outlets and the hightech slow motion video capabilities, there has never been a better time to learn how to play tennis. However, because of the different opinions and different coaching styles, it also brings the potential to be more confusing than ever about how to strike the ball.
When you are playing a match, you must make split-second decisions about what you’re going to do with the ball. The last thing you need to be doing is thinking about how to hit the ball. You need to be on automatic pilot on your technique and the only thing you are thinking about is watching the ball and where are you going to send it on the other side. Remember, you basically have three options on where to send the ball: crosscourt, down the middle, or down the line.
You also must realize that there is a possibility of three situations that the ball is putting you in. You are receiving a ball that either is putting you in an offensive position, defensive position, or it’s a neutral situation.
A neutral situation is when neither you nor your opponent has an advantage in the point. This is where a lot of errors come from because a lot of players go for too much and end up making lots of mistakes from a neutral situation.
Therefore, sometimes you’ll watch a match and see that the player with the better strokes doesn’t always win. If the player with the inferior strokes knows which situation they are in during the rally and takes that correct shot, they will always have a chance to beat the players with better strokes.
Our clinics and practices help you make those split-second decisions much easier. We try to create a situation that you will be in during a real match and let you execute your shot and critique whether you took the correct shot.
It is important to improve your technique so that you can execute efficiently and have less risk of injuries. However, you must realize that it is also important that you know how to play the game.
We will have our first social round robin and pro exhibition of the fall season on Friday, October 21st from 2 to 5 PM. Sign up at the pro shop.
See you on the courts!

LRC Round Robin Summer Fun
By Paige Packman, Tennis Committee
Despite the heat, eight enthusiastic tennis players turned out for the August 25th round robin. We welcomed our very own Olivia from the LRC front desk to the social tennis group, is she ever ramping up fast - look out! It was a fun mix between Triples play and Doubles matches, which kept us running, laughing and trash talking! Look out for more Triples actions when our First Friday Triples Social Mixers ramp up. To the right is the schedule of tennis events for the upcoming year (subject to change of course). Be sure to mark these events on the calendar so you don’t miss the fun!!

Popular Traditional Tennis Event Returns
By Ralph Ricapito
The 2022 USTA National Senior; Super Senior; and Ultra Father/Son Clay Court Championships
Is scheduled at The Landings from Tuesday, November 15th thru Sunday, November 20th.
This tournament will be played as it has over the past 29 years. It’s a week of great tennis from nationally ranked players from all over the country. The players have always enjoyed their experiences with their ambassadors and were quick to compliment our courts saying, “…they are the best courts they play on anywhere in the country.”
Every year it grows better due to the efforts of Kevin Lechlitner, Club Manager & Tournament Director; and our Tennis Pro’s Adrian “Mo” Moghina, Jen Fiers, and Sandra Cacic; using their skills and work tirelessly to make the entire event a success. Our team Ambassadors and court volunteers all working together to give the event that special Landings touch.
The ambassador’s capacity is to welcome their team upon arrival, answering any questions, following their matches whenever possible. Also, we contribute one potluck dish enough for 10 people and can help host the player’s luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 17th.
We will continue the tradition of giving t-shirts and enjoy the tennis performances throughout the week seeing it up close and personal. This event is complimentary for all residents and the community. Why not get involved? If you want to volunteer as an ambassador, please call Ralph Ricapito at 941-356-7912, or 941-927-6261; or leave a message at the Racquet Club, 941933-3886. We will get back to you with details.

Our history, our mission
The Landings Holiday Children’s Foundation mission continues for its 8th year providing holiday gifts to children affected by cancer, abuse, or loss of a loved one.
By 2021 our reach had grown to helping over 160 children each year that’s a total of more than 3700 gifts to date! Imagine if every household in the Landings was able to help one child!
How it All Got Started...
A phone call to Henry Rhodes, requesting help for a few children that would not otherwise have Christmas, was the beginning of the Landings Holiday Charitable Foundation (LHCF). With some help from friends, seven children enjoyed a Christmas that they wouldn't have had any other way! This grass roots effort to help children with cancer has now grown into an IRS approved 501(c)(3) charity that supports four organizations with the focus on helping disadvantaged children who might otherwise fall through the cracks.... which is particularly unfortunate during the Holidays. Can You Help
How you can help

We created a “Drive-thru” party for the adopted children with stops at Reindeer Refreshments, Candy Cane Lane, and Gingerbread House Party. Every family commented on how welcoming the “elves” were as they lined the street waving and ringing bells!

BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN THE SARASOTA AREA BY FAR!
FRESH, FLAVORFUL, PERFECTLY PREPARED FOOD. BE BACK NEXT YEAR!
“This is a small family run restaurant and the owners are onsite there. The owners and staff are friendly and welcoming. The service is great, but the food is phenomenal ! We had the blackened grouper, crab cakes and fish stew. It was seasoned and prepared perfectly! We found it because we were looking a place to eat after a movie, and if we hadn’t looked for reviews on TripAdvisor we would never have found it. It’s in a small plaza in the back corner and does not stand out. It was 45 minutes from where we were staying but it was so good we had to go back again. Each of the last 3 years we have stayed for 2 months on longboat key and this was the best seafood restaurant we’ve been to, hands down! It was nice to meet the owner who it turns out was from the town next to us in Connecticut. You must try it, but I would recommend reservations at dinner time as it’s a small place.”

Pickleball update By Robert Manteiga
Pickleball will be resuming its normal schedule commencing the first Tuesday of October. Courts 7 and 8 will be reserved for pickleball from 2:30 to 4:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 9:30 to 11:30 AM on Sunday mornings. Because many Landings’ residents will not be returning until mid-October to, possibly, early November, turnout might be somewhat light at first. If this is the case, play will be limited to just one court (8) for the first couple of weeks. Newcomers are always welcomed. Please feel free to contact me or Neil Goldman through our Team Reach website or stop by and see Kevin at the LRC office if you have any questions.
Calling all singers at all levels of ability. If you enjoy music and like to sing, join our Landings choral group, the Landoliers. Whoa, Doggie! How to Slow Down Your Fast Eater
By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect
Just like their pet parents, many dogs love to eat, and mealtime is something they always look forward to. But unlike humans, it’s not as easy for dogs to control their impulses, and some make a habit of dashing through dinner—and every other meal—to the detriment of their health.
That’s right. While you may have done your best to design your pup’s diet with loads of nutritional value and plenty of variety, if they’re woofing it down in short order that could lead to trouble.
Let’s take a look at how eating too fast can have ill effects, and ways you can help your dog take it easy during chowtime.
The Risks of Speed Eating
Dining and dashing can cause a number of problems for pups. While some are pretty immediate and might seem trivial, others can lead to serious issues long term.
When ingesting food too quickly dogs tend to gulp down quite a bit of air with it. In the wake of a meal, this can increase burping or flatulence, or reactions may manifest as something more serious like choking or vomiting. However, while those results might be manageable, fast eating can also lead to issues like bloat, or gastric dilation and volvulus, a condition where the stomach expands and twists onto itself, which can be fatal.
Even if they’re able to avoid gumming up their gastrointestinal system, pets that eat too quickly tend to eat too much as well and, as a result, can become overweight. Fortunately, there are tools and methods that can help train your pup to slow down and avoid these problems.
Putting the Brakes on Mealtime
Slowing down your dog during dinner starts with a great tool simply called a “slow feed” bowl.
If you’re unfamiliar, slow feed come with built-in obstructions that require your dog to refocus and maneuver to reach their food. While they may look unusual, they do a fantastic job at stifling a fast eater. You may want to check out the Gobble Stopper from Loving Pets, which turns any bowl into a slow feeder.
Another to consider, maybe during a snack break, is the
Emat from SodaPup. Half feeding tool, half toy, Emats offer simultaneous sensory and mental stimulation as your dog attempts to navigate ridges, bumps, shapes, and puzzles to consume their food. This simple, yet innovative tool can provide your dog with enrichment for both their belly and their brain; the challenge can keep their mind sharp while helping them avoid quick consumption.
Finally, for kibble lovers, there’s a dry food option as well. Similar to the Emat, the Sunflower from Injoya allows owners to distribute kibble hidden among the nooks and crannies of an adorable, plush feeding mat. More enjoyment, less grumbly tummy, and it doubles as an inviting spot to relax once mealtime is over.
Is your dog a speed eater? If so, look into slow feeders for benefits that stimulate their body and mind, so they can live a healthier and happier life.

Going to the Dogs
By Karen Snyder
Thunder, thunder, who’s afraid of thunder? Not me. When I wear my new thunder shirt!
I’m Bernice, aka Bernie, a very charming I might add 9-year-old schnauzer belonging to Julie Welch and Todd Moore.
You might wonder why I have a full tail unlike my breed. In England, where I was born, the Schnauzer tails are not cropped. Must have something to do with the Royals.
In my home, my best animal friend is a gorgeous black kitty named Minnie. Out walking one day, I discovered her abandoned behind the Rooms to Go store. Minnie is my “Feline to Go!”
One of the best times I ever had was hiking in the Lake District with Julie! I was off leash, which is typical in the U.K. for dogs, and when I disappeared, Julie was worried!
Minutes later, she saw me off in the distance chasing a herd of sheep down a fell (small mountain) in the U.K. Of course, I came right back to her. That was so much fun!
Can’t be off leash in The Landings! Glad there aren’t any sheep here, too.
I loved my photo shoot!
Call Karen to feature your dog in the Eagle! There are a lot of us canines living here! 941-855-0347

threat or nuisance.
Last month the board approved the golf cart registration policy. The committee will publish the registration guidelines and penalties. Residents will be given until the end of October to register their golf carts.
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES COMMITTEE
Board secretary, Harry Moser requested anyone interested in servicing on the committee to contact him.
BUDGET PLANNING/ RESERVES
LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger reported this portion of the meeting was going to be particularly important because they are going to review every portion of reserves. They will investigate any weak areas and determine what to do to correct them. This will help them determine how to proceed with
budget planning. Additionally, they will address special assessment strategy.
Each committee was asked to examine there their own needs for reserves moving forward. There were to determine whether the allocation for this year was adequate for next year and to adjust accordingly.
Lakes and Drainage Committee chair, Jeff Smith suggested $80,000 be placed in reserves for his committee. This was based on past reserves for those two areas and past expenses for lake erosion. After some discussion the Board decided to discuss the issue further at the budget meetings.
Concerns were raised about the aging irrigation system throughout The Landing’s.
Landscaping Chair, Paul Weiner expressed optimism about the status of irrigation based on past repairs and upgrades already in place.
LMA President Elida Ramberger reported last year’s budget for roads indicated the estimated replacement cost for the roads in three years would be $3.5 million. The beginning balance of reserves for that project was $394,248. The assessment collected in 2021 was $167,516. After expenditures the resulting balance was $250,629. The resulting additional reserve requirement for roads at the end of 2022 is $3,249,371. This brings the estimated, per unit owner cost of the shortfall to $4,628. The decision of how to handle the shortfall will be determined by the board.
Paul Weiner noted money needs to be available to accept a bid and current funds available in reserves would be inadequate. Ramberger interjected that legal counsel suggested they should not sign a contract of this size until they have the money in hand.
Another position suggested the board needs adequate funds to at least make the initial down payment on a roads contract. All that said, the board needs to move carefully before committing to an enormous financial obligation. The idea of imposing two assessments instead of one was also suggested during discussion.
The board went on to discuss whether the assessment to bring the reserves fund up to date should be split into two installments or one. After discussion among board members and residents who attended the meeting, the board will vote on the issue at the next meeting.
Discussion of the special assessment strategy and stages will take place at another meeting soon.
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
A company named
Standpoint submitted a proposal for hurricane remediation for the board to consider. The board voted to turn down the proposal.
BULLETIN BOARD
A suggestion was made for the board to purchase a locking type bulletin board to be installed at The Landing’s Racquet Club (LRC) for the board to post general news and notices. A motion was made to spend up to $500 to purchase a bulletin board to post LMA notices outside the LRC. The motion passed.
GENERAL DISCUSSION
A resident requested cleaning products that look unsightly be moved from appearing through a window in the North Gate house. Ramberger assured the resident the problem would be rectified quickly. Issues with the wall in that area will also be addressed.

Arts on the Horizon
New directions
Children who become artists start painting and drawing just like everyone else -- squiggles on blank paper. They continue with a coloring book and produce lots of green hair overrunning the lines of Cinderella’s head, cascading over her gown, and on down to her feet. A year or so later the hair may become brown or blonde and be confined, like a glued-on wig, to the top of each princess’s head. It is only later, when artists know who they are, that they again draw and paint outside the lines.
Born in Prague, raised there and in Jerusalem, working in the world of fashion design in New York, and now totally devoting her life to family and art, Andrea Dasha Reich resides and works in Sarasota.
But, it seems, nowhere in the art she currently creates does one find a straight line. Yes, looking back at the different arcs of her work one can see, in her Cubistic period, those straight lines. But even then, the lines were fuzzy with colors bleeding into one another.
Over the last years Ms. Reich’s groundbreaking work in Resin-
By Rodger Skidmore
based acrylics has brought her great acclaim, with a number of galleries representing her across the US. With the assistance of her husband, and his knowledge of dental based resins, she was able to interweave multiple levels of translucence -- each containing variously colored amorphisms.
During this time her resin-based main arc splintered in multiple directions. Using this same approach but with glass instead of resins layers on canvas, her paintings became freestanding sculptures.
Or, using resin impregnated fabric she was able to mold and shape these into much freer forms.
Leaving glass and fabric behind, a good deal of her energy is now directed on her paintings, Ms Reich has doubled down on resin; single layer, infused with pure raw acrylics. She has said, “I am in control of the process 50% of the time, the acrylics are in control of the rest, as they have a life of their own.” Not content with a single focus, she has started working on bas-relief and free form ceramics overlaid with acrylic paint.
If one looks closely, and doing so give one great pleasure, one can see a single theme of overlayment that has taken place in multiple directions, using resins, glass, acrylics, fabrics, and ceramics to harmonious effects. Ms. Reich’s latest show, Silk Road, will be on display at the Art Ovation Hotel with a 5:30 p.m. opening reception on Oct. 19.

First things first October is month number 10 of every year. And if one graphically subtracts nothing (0) from 10, the
result is 1. So, while January is the first month of the year, one could say that October is the premiere month -- especially since the Sarasota Ballet is presenting three world premieres on Oct. 21 through 23 at the Mertz theatre at FSU’s Center for the Performing Arts.
In keeping with the mathematics of October, Ricardo Graziano will be presenting his 10th One act ballet for the SBC as its resident choreographer. And in keeping with the mood of the world, and the scariness of Halloween, we will see a group of nomads wandering, in a choreographed way, across deserted landscapes, facing unknown difficulties but, ultimately, persevering through a sense of community.
Helping to set the tone is Shostakovich’s hauntingly apt Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor. Graziano’s takeaway is that “relationships help us grow stronger and wiser” -- let us hope.
It took Hannibal 16 days to cross the Alps with his 15,000 horses and 37 elephants, while the dancers in Richard House’s new work do so in only seven as they perform this premiere to the music of Ludovico Einaudi’s composition Seven Days Walking.
It must be a much easier journey without the elephants. But not too easy, as they experience hallucinations along the way -- hypagogia (transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep) will do that to you. This composition, when played by its author, took a bit over six hours to be recorded. Hallucinations must have been everywhere.
The third first is the work of choreographer Gemma Bond, which will be accompanied by Samuel Barber’s Excursions and his Piano Sonata, Op. 26. Costume design will be by Lauren Starobin.
The music to which these ballets will be performed is at times lyrical but often eerily and penetratingly impenetrable. The Shostakovich must have been quite an inspiration to Mr. Graziano and will be played by Trio Gala (based in Boston) which appears courtesy of the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota.
And speaking of premieres and (luscious) music, on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Sarasota Opera House the Sarasota Ballet is performing two company premieres -- Danses Concertantes by Sir Kenneth MacMillan and Dante Sonata by Sir Frederick Ashton. Plus Rhapsody, also by Sir Frederick.

Mid-month spectacular
The Great White Way was how newspapers used to refer to Broadway, but with the cost of electricity, environmental concerns, and its shut-down from COVID-19, Broadway’s other name, The Street of Dreams, seems more appropriate nowadays. On the 15th of the month, the dreamy dance revue Broadway comes to the Van Wezel for a one-day showcase of local and international stars performing the choreographic presentations of Louis Van Amstel.
It’s one thing to see the smooth moves and flashy dance attire of Dancing with the Stars on the small screen in your living room,
but seeing the swirling colors on stage is quite another. There will be professional ballroom dancing with classical as well as tango and Latin rhythms. And, thankfully, they promise no macarena or electric slide.
More info at FredAstaire.com/ sarasota/Showcase2022.
Last things last October is one of those long 31-day months, so it’s not surprising that one could get a little drowsy (hopefully no hypagogic hallucinations) toward the end of the month. One quick way to wake up is to take a cold shower, while another is to have someone jump out from behind a tree and shout BOO! and give you a good scare.
There will be no scarcity of scares (of a mild child-friendly sort) at the Spanish Point campus of Selby Gardens from Oct. 14 through 31. The attraction at that venue will be titled Lights at Spooky Point. Orchids are usually, in the daytime, pretty flowers with various shapes. At night, at Spooky Point, the ghost orchids, bat orchids and spider orchids will try to entangle all the little ones in their webs.
There will be vine-twisted skeletons, pumpkins, and a number of other surprises. Red, purple, and orange lights will guide everyone to the end of the twisting and twisted walk to a hay maze in which one can lose oneself in the evening’s festive atmosphere.
The Michael’s East food truck magically appears, mid-walk, during each evening’s two shows.

Meals You Can Make in Your Coffee Pot!
If you still boil water to make coffee, like me, the Mr. Coffee Pot is kept on your counter all day.
Just think about how many meals start with hot water! It takes minimal space in a kitchen, dorm room, or barracks.
The recipes ideas require only water to create meals and snacks.
Ideas:
Ramen Noodles: Fill the water reservoir with recommend amount of water according to package directions. Add dry noodles to your carafe along with the seasoning packet. Start brewing. Let the noodles cook in the hot water till desired texture. (This works with instant rice or instant Mac ‘n cheese.
Hot Dogs: Fill entire reservoir with water. Add desired hot dogs (can half of them if necessary). Start brewing. Let them cook for 5 minutes after brewing cycle complete. Fork them out and enjoy.
Blanched Vegetables: Fill the entire reservoir with water. Add your veggies to the carafe. (Green beans, snap peas, snow peas, corn, cut broccoli or cauliflower into 2-inch chunks).
Start brewing. Veggies will be tender/crisp after brewing cycle is complete. Drain m, season with salt and pepper.
Hard Boiled Eggs: Fill entire water reservoir with water. Place a couple eggs in the carafe. Start brewing. When brewing finished be sure the eggs are covered with water. Let the eggs cook in the hot water for 10 minutes or to your desired level of doneness. Note: the more eggs you add, the longer the cooking time.
All from your humble coffee pot!

Just for Laughs
Compiled by Dee Ricapito & Bill Whitman, American Legion Magazine
If laughter keeps you young, then these jokes may be the ticket to getting older gracefully:
• Research shows that laughing for two minutes is just as healthy as a 20-minute jog. So now, I’m sitting in the park, laughing at all the joggers.
• It’s important to rest between sets of exercises. I personally stick to breaks of about three to four years.
• A diplomat is a man who always remembers a woman’s birthday but never remembers her age.
• At what age is it appropriate to tell my dog he’s adopted.
• I don’t want to brag or make anyone jealous, but I can still fit into the earrings I wore in high school.
• When I was a kid, they didn’t call it “behavioral disorders”. They called it, “being a brat”.
• Old is when getting lucky means you find your car in the parking lot.
• How old is she? No one knows, she’s been 29 since she was 29!
• The older you get, the better you get unless you’re a banana.
• You know you’re old when you hear your favorite songs in an elevator.
• You’re only as old as you remember you are!
• A century ago, two brothers decided it was possible to fly; as you can see, they were Wright.
• Lastly: When too tired to do all the things on your “To-Do” list, try a “To-Don’t” list. Simply write all the things you’re not going to do and then… don’t do them. Huge sense of achievement with no effort!
