DAY TRIPPING TO LEGACY TRAIL

On April 25th, about 25 Landings residents came to hear about The Landings composting initiative. Our guest speaker was Tracie Troxler, Founder and Executive Director of a local nonprofit organization (Sunshine Community Compost). Troxler has advocated for composting and established several composting sites throughout the city of Sarasota since 2017. Her presentation revealed a lot about composting including how to properly compost and reviewed interesting benefits of composting. One benefit she shared is since the 2017 start of Sunshine Community Compost organization over 85,000 pounds of scrap foods have been diverted from landfills.

The attendees were impressed with how landfill takes years to break down combined refuse whereas composting the food we discard takes only a few months to turn into beneficial soil. All it takes to compost are a few bins, add some food scraps, cover with some ‘browns’ (leaves), turn the contents of the bins a couple of times a week and in no time, you have contributed to reducing food waste, conservation of water, and slowing climate change. And, you have connected as a community! Attendees at the presentation also h ad s e ve ra l for wa r d-t h i n k i ng suggestions about g rowing our project as it unfolds so anyone can easily participate in composting in The Landings!

Sunday, June 12th, 7:00 pm at LRC Enjoy refreshments and the special music of Fawny Frost, FawnyFrost.com Details: Learn firsthand about the crisis in Ukraine from Landings Resident Vladimir Shtumayzen, who has family in Ukraine. Information about donations to the International Committee of the Red Cross will be available at the event. You can contribute online at: https://www.icrc.org/en/donate/ukraine This event is supported by the Landings Racquet Club and is open to all Landings Residents and Guests. How to Join: Sign up at the Landings Racquet Club if you can attend. Contact Norman Olshansky if you would like to join the committee. We hope to see you there!

Happy Hour a Great Success

LANDINGS BUSINESS OWNER

If you were fortunate enough to see Dianne Verrinder’s art show at The Landings Racquet Club last month, you certainly enjoyed a fun and uplifting event. Her paintings are full of joy and color. As I could not attend her show, I visited Dianne at her home on Heron Way. She has a working studio there and her living room is her gallery. Dianne Verrinder paints with acrylics, brushes, and palette knives. A palette knife is a small spatula-like tool that artists use to apply thick paint to a canvas. She mostly creates landscapes but also started painting images of cats and dogs. Viviane, her sweet boxer mix, is one of her inspirations. A lot of her landscapes feature forest scenes, aspen trunks to be precise. Dianne always liked to paint and design. She grew up in New Jersey but lived in Santa Monica, CA for a long time where she worked as an interior designer. She loved this job. It allowed her to encounter many celebrities, Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford, to name two. When she moved back to New Jersey to take care

of her parents, she continued designing displays for Macy’s and other stores. Then, she decided to become a nurse. When she retired from this work in 2012, Dianne and her husband Roger decided to move to the Sarasota area. Her sister already lived on Siesta Key. They could not find anything satisfactory on Siesta Key, however, a realtor brought them to The Landings and it was love at first sight and they moved here permanently. Sadly, in 2014, her husband passed away from an incurable ailment. This is when Dianne started taking watercolor lessons from Vladislav Yeliseyev. Later she took oil and acrylic painting lessons from Ha Pham, an artist who also paints live at Barbosso Café in Sarasota and who creates large murals around town. This brought Dianne to her new style of Spring Meadow, oil on canvas, 24”x20” paintings, using the palette knife for rich and thick paint applications. The picture of Sunflowers is for sale and 20% of the proceeds will be donated to Help Ukraine. Her paintings are very affordable.

President’s Report Committees have been very productive and will continue to be busy throughout the summer tending to the business of our neighborhood. T he La kes a nd Dra i nage Committee, Jeff Smith, Chair, h a s worked w it h St a nte c Eng i ne er i ng Con su lt a nt s to develop a remediation plan for our Southwest Florida Storm Water Drainage permitted lakes. Harry Moser has created a process for updating the Board Manual (underway). The Governance Committee, Sue Camins, Chair, has been busy reviewing documents and processes used to manage governance. You may notice improvements happening at the north gate. Judy Greene (Maintenance Chair) has been overseeing the repair of the wall that deteriorated and fell to the ground, the wall abutting the Publix area has been cleaned and is being patched, the air conditioning unit, necessary to maintain the

temperature in the guard house to protect the electronics, has been revived. And lastly, is the work being done by the Design Interface Committee, Chaired by Eddie Goldstein. While the goal of incorporating three sources of data, being done by Technology Chair, John McFetridge, Dick Bayles and Paul Fullylove (Website contractor), occurs simultaneously, the functionality and appearance

of the Website is being updated to deliver a simple to use tool. The board voted unanimously at the May meeting to support Joan Koplin’s (Chair, Sign Committee) motion to authorize installation of the street and way-finding signs in our neighborhood. No date for installation, yet. The Roads Committee and the Board held a special meeting to inform new board members about the project, specifically the history of roads restoration, accomplishments to date and bumps in the road. The on-going goal is to deliver the same presentation with opportunities for questions to all associations. The first was Friday, the 13th. If you haven’t already had an opportunity to participate, please ask your association president to schedule a presentation for you and your neighbors with me. The Eagle has landed in our mailboxes, crisp, whiter, and full of photos that better represent the talent of The Landings’ volunteer

photographers, Bob Mantiega and Rick Waller. Bob and Rick are our archivists, preserving images which will be sentimentally looked back upon with many remarks about how they were enjoyed. The Nature Trail will see some updates; the observation deck and tree have been removed allowing for installation of two more kayak racks. The question of removing kayaks in preparation for a hurricane has generated much discussion. Please refer to the Nature Trail article for the resulting policy. The Security Committee has met with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s De pa r t me nt s e ek i ng adv ice regarding the continued misuse of golf carts in our neighborhood. Everyone authorized to operate a golf cart is encouraged to review the rules and regulations regarding registration, qualified drivers and permitted and prohibited areas in which carts may be enjoyed. The rules for golf carts are being provided for those neighbors who

have inquired about what golf cart rules exist. (Copied directly from Rules and Regulations) • The golf cart must be registered with the LMA, with the name, address, a picture of the golf cart, and proof of liability insurance. A registration form may be obtained from the Main Gate. • A golf cart may be operated only during the hours between sunrise and sunset unless it is e q u i p p e d w it h h e a d l i g h t s, taillights, and turn signals. • The must be a seat for all riders on the golf cart. • The driver of the golf cart must be a licensed driver, or at least the age of 14 accompanied by a licensed driver. • Golf carts may not be operated in the Eagles Nest area of on the Nature Trail. The next Landings Management Board meeting is June 2. Please join in-person or via Zoom. Your participation is needed, and your input is welcomed.

LMA Meeting Notes

JUNE 2022 27th State Media, LLC

By Trebor Britt

LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger began the meeting by announcing the following during the president’s report: • The minutes of the last LMA Meeting and special meetings were presented and approved. • A consultant contacted to audition her services to improve t h e z o o m pl a t f o r m o f L M A meetings was unable to attend due to contracting COVID. • A special meeting was held in May presenting and reviewing t he ent i re Road s Re storat ion Project including its history. This information will be repeated after the adjournment of this meeting for those who were unable to attend the special meeting. • T he latest issue of T he Eagle newspaper h as b een d i s t r i b ut e d f e a t u r i n g m a n y photos from Landing’s volunteer photographers. • The observation deck has now been removed from the nature trail providing additional space needed for additional kayak storage racks. The Nature Trail Committee is working on a new lease agreement for kayak owners to rent space on the racks. Discussions are ongoing regarding what to do with the racks during tropical storms or hurricanes.

the project.

SIGN COMMITTEE

ENTRY DECAL FEES

Committee chair, Joan Koplin repor ted Forsite h a s b e en warehousing the signs at their expense since January. They have asked LMA to begin paying a warehouse charge of $300 a month. After consulting with Santec, they believe the signs can be installed before the roads are completed. Should any signs be damaged during road const ruction, the contractor will pay for all repairs. A motion was made for the LMA Board to move forward with the road sign installation as soon as Forsite can schedule it. The motion was approved unanimously.

FINANCE REPORT

Tr e a s u r e r, H a r ve y G r e l l e r reported a deficit for March of $1,000. The first quarter showed a surplus of $20,800. Uncollected LMA dues has been reduced to about $13,000 currently. Penalty and interest notices have been mailed.

KAYAK PROJECT

The observation deck, a large Buttonwood tree and additional foliage has been removed to allow for the installation of two additional kayak racks that will be purchased soon. New g u idel i nes a nd reg u lat ion s have been presented to the gove r n a n c e com m it t e e for review and eventual approval by t he b oa rd. A new lea se agreement renters will sign is also being written.

FINANCE OPTIONS

Board Secretary, Harry Moser explored a finance option for owners to consider if for whatever reason they were not able to pay the com i ng assessment for road construction. Florida Central Credit Union is offering L a n d i n g s ow n e r s a lowe r interest auto loan which would be easier and less work than a home equity loan. The current interest rate offered is 2.5%. Harry also spoke to a bank about home equity loan. The Interest rate was higher and a lot more information would be required from anyone seeking a home equity loan. Judy Gre ene repor ted w i n d s h ie ld a n d h e ad l ig ht de ca l cost s h ave i nc rea sed to $10. Replacement stickers are currently $5. There is a long-standing policy that new residents are not charged an initial sticker fee. The committee is recommending a new sticker fee of $15 be voted on at the next meeting. The new fee would not be implemented until issues at the North Gate have been solved.

NEW BUSINESS

Treasurer, Harvey Greller repor ted la st yea r Nor m Olshansky was contacted by

a communications consulting g roup about wires run n i ng u nde r n e at h t he r o ad s a nd proper t ies ow ned by T he La ndi ngs. T hey believe compa n ies such as Ver i zon FiOS and Comcast are using them for free. Greller said a local development received $100,000 back. There a re no fees for allowing the communications consulting group to investigate and see if this is the case. If the LMA Board agrees to allow the company to investigate this issue, the consulting g roup would receive 25% of what they collect and LMA would receive 75% in perpetuity. Greller will send board members a brochure describing the company and the project for a potential vote at the next meeting.

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE LMA Pres. Elida Ramberger reported that the governance c o m m i t t e e i s wo r k i n g o n establishing policy measures and guidelines regarding LMA con ne c t ion w it h nonpr of it organizations and fundraising e f for t s, e tc. MEETING CONSULTANT

LMA is considering hiring a consultant to facilitate and ma nage t he zoom plat for m o f f ut u r e m e e t i n g s. A f t e r discussion, a motion to hire was tabled in so consultant can audition her services at the next meeting. Details of expenses, etc. will be reported at that meeting.

ROADS UPDATE

After a long process, road construction packages are now being compiled to solicit bids.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

Board Secretary, Harry Moser repor ted sendi ng ever yone a copy of the Board Manual r e que st i ng me mb e r s m a ke changes or additions describing com m it tee respon sibi l it ies. Once each member agreed on the new language the document would be brought to a board meeting for a vote and final approval.

MAINTENANCE

M a i nt e n a n c e C o m m it t e e chair, Judy Greene, reported the progress of projects. • A section of the North wall near the North Gate has been repaired. • Greene explained the delay in the North Gate roof repair was due to a flat tile roof ridge shor t age. She repor ted t he delay could extend another six months. Wanting to get the repair project completed, The Board approved her moving forward at her discretion by selecting barrel tile that was readily available and at the same cost. • Lights at both gate houses have been replaced or redirected for better visibility and the air conditioner at the North Gate has been repaired. • Damaged street signs will be replaced by new ones which will be installed soon.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Chairman Michael Knupp reported Guard performance issues were discussed with the contracted security company, Guard One. A few major changes moving forward will result in several staffing duties. Residents should see an improvement of performance issues. Slight issues with gate entry stickers it’s being investigated. The committee may re-position sen sors to widen sig nal

Happiness is...Sunshine, Berries, and Chocolate Doesn’t that sound like a delicious combination? The longer April days mean plenty of sunshine and that’s just one of the reasons why Jerry Williams, owner of Abel’s Ice Cream, says it’s his favorite month. The warm, golden rays of sunshine mean it’s time to break out Abel’s featured flavor, Gold Mine (Rich Chocolate and French Vanilla ice cream swirled together with a caramel ribbon).

MOTE MARINE REQUEST

The board was approached by two longtime residents connected with Mote Marine. Two of Mote’s scientists are requesting access to the nature trail to do a seagrass study. The study is to determine whether the invasive algae content of Robert’s Bay is having an adverse effect on the sea grass. They would use the access four times annually. The committee decided to approve the request as it would be beneficial for The Landings to assist Mote in

We are closed on Sunday, June 19, but would like to wish everyone a HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

“This is a small family run restaurant and the owners are onsite there. The owners and staff are friendly and welcoming. The service is great, but the food is phenomenal ! We had the blackened grouper, crab cakes and fish stew. It was seasoned and prepared perfectly ! We found it because we were looking a place to eat after a movie, and if we hadn’t looked for reviews on TripAdvisor we would never have found it. It’s in a small plaza in the back corner and does not stand out. It was 45 minutes from where we were staying but it was so good we had to go back again. Each of the last 3 years we have stayed for 2 months on longboat key and this was the best seafood restaurant we’ve been to, hands down! It was nice to meet the owner who it turns out was from the town next to us in Connecticut. You must try it, but I would recommend reservations at dinner time as it’s a small place.”

Racquet Club News LRC President’s Report June has arrived, which means the temperatures are rising, the roads getting (slightly) less busy, and the tennis professionals are still chasing titles in Europe. By the time you read this, the French Open at Roland Garros is coming to its end. That means the pros will be switching to the grass court tournaments in Europe in Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy, and England – culminating with the big one – Wimbledon. Fancy some strawberries and cream, anyone? Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, with the first event being played in

1877. Over 55,000 tennis balls are used at the tournament and each morning, Rufus the hawk is let go to circle over the grounds to scare away the pigeons. Here are a few other facts about Wimbledon: 250 ball boys and ball girls, aged 15, are used to retrieve the tennis balls and the club has 18 grass courts for tournament play and another 14 grass courts for practice. A very select club, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has only 500 members. And of course, past winners of the singles competition are honorary members – an even more select group.

I want to give a special thanks to all the members who sent in their survey responses. We received almost a 50% response rate – wh ich is fantastic for surveys. We all get asked to do a

lot of surveys – so again, I thank those who responded. The board and Kevin have been reviewing the responses and we’ll be acting on many of the suggestions/ requests. Obviously, we must

News from the Court

We have a few changes to the guest policy that will go into effect June 1st. The guest fee for use of the tennis courts is now $10 yearround. There is no longer a half-price fee after 12 PM in the summer. The activity fee for nonmembers using the clubhouses for card games (i.e. Mah Jongg) or attending lectures is now $5 per time. The fee for nonmembers taking one-hour private tennis lessons has also increased from $5 to $10. The half-hour and clinic nonmember rates remain at $5 per lesson. An update to the Club’s rules & regulations has been sent out via email and is also available in the Tennis Pro Shop. Now that summer has arrived, it is time for us to do some projects around the Club. In the next few weeks, two new geothermal units will be installed to replace the twenty-yearold larger unit that died. This improvement will allow us to better heat the pool in

I am really hoping t h at Roge r Fede re r (my favorite player) will come back and play a few more tournaments and especially try to play Wimbledon and/ or the U.S. Open. But with every passing month that is becoming less and less likely. And furthermore, even if he does come back the chances that he will be a contender for those grand slams are looking more and more unlikely. To be a contender, you must have plenty of recent match play and be put into very tough situations and still come out on top on a regular basis. I believe that Roger will announce his retirement, soon. While that will be sad to hear, I am very excited to see Carlos Alcaraz doing so well already as a teenager. He has said that he modeled his game more after Roger than Rafael Nadal. That is why he will be more fun to watch for me than most of the other players coming up. He a l ready possesses t he ment a l toughness that all the great players like Roger, Rafa, and the Joker have. But here is what I think makes him special and gives him an edge over the other young players: 1) his speed and quickness around the court is unrivaled. He can get to balls to play defense and stay in the point unlike any other player. That also gives him the ability to turn defense into offense quickly. But even better he is quick to come forward in the court to take advantage of short balls and attack

the winter and cool it in the summer and there won’t be as much variance from the thermostat setting as before. We are planning to do some painting inside the Fitness Center as well this summer. We are still deciding on the colors and how many rooms to paint. The tennis court resurfacing project is also coming up but I will write more about that next month. With sum mer upon us, that also means the afternoon thunderstorms will be starting soon. Those storms can bring heavy rain and strong winds. Those winds become a problem when the umbrellas on the pool deck are left up. There will be a few new umbrellas and tables on the deck soon. I would like to encourage members to put the umbrellas down if they are the last one using them. This will help protect them from getting damaged during one of these storms. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

because like Roger he is very good and confident around the net. 2) he has b et ter te c h n ique on h i s forehand and ser ve (the two most important shots in tennis) than Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitipas, and all the other young players. His technique gives him the confidence to play very aggressive under pressure. That is because he has the perfect blend of direction, speed, spin, height, and depth for any groundstroke or serve that he chooses. 3) he has the best drop shot in the sport period. He has impeccable touch and feel for the racquet face. That is his X-factor. Not only can he overpower you with his groundstrokes, but he can take the racquet out of your hand with a drop shot. He makes you accountable for 90% of the court on your side. If Carlos stays healthy, keeps improving his game and continues to have fun competing he will be a contender for every grand slam and have an amazing career. Possibly as good as Roger, Rafa, and the Joker. What will be great to me is if we can have a couple more unknown up and comers (especially one from the United States) to make some amazing rivalries like we have had for the last twenty years. In next month’s article I will talk about Iga Swiatek. She has the potential to contend for every grand slam in the woman’s game. See you on the courts!

Tips from Coach Jen Poach-and-Cross

In singles, every play is up to you to make the set-up shot and the winner. It’s exhausting! In doubles, you and your partner are working together to capitalize on each other’s great set-up shots, and it is up to you to figure out when to get in on the play. Your partner may hit a thunderous return so that you can leave a little early from your side to poach it. Or, you may hit an amazing lob that leaves your opponents scrambling so that your partner can close the net with the easy put away winner. Think of your partner and you as two arms on the same body, so that you work together. If you see that your partner hit a shot that throws your opponent off balance off center, falling back on their heels, or running up to barely scrape the ball off the ground on a short shot, they are probably off balance. This is where you come in... literally! One example of this is crossing the center service line to poach a volley. Many times, players feel that they should stay in their box to let their partner take the shot. The center line becomes an invisible wall and players may feel “greedy” for crossing it and taking their partner’s play. But I say, be greedy if you are the closer one to the net! It is much easier to poach and keep crossing, thereby following the ball once you have attacked

the opponent at the net and allowing your partner to cross behind you. Even when a poach fails to deliver the punch you had intended, this inevitable poach-and-cross play not only makes it easier for your partner to know where to cover behind you, but it confuses your opponent and forces them to calculate at the last second to which side they should try to block the ball. Capitalizing on your partner’s offensive shot will take time away from your opponents’ recovery and, therefore, impair their preparation for their next shot. If you fail to capitalize, you allow your opponent to reset, thereby wasting your partner’s offensive position and losing an opportunity to close the point. You can plan these plays with your partner but they can also happen in the middle of the point spontaneously. Try to practice these plays in drills to perfect the mechanics, then try them in social games when you are up in the game score to test yourself in the heat of the moment. Even if you fail a few times, you put the bug in your opponents’ heads that you might poach. This is especially true if you mix up the poach-and-cross with the fake-and-stay play. Confusing your opponents about what you are going to do is half the fun!

I was going to write about the antique capital of Florida, Arcadia, but decided to keep that for the fall and write about my recent experience on the wonderful Legacy Trail. I want to make sure everyone is aware of one of Sarasota's great resources. It was Easter morning and a spur of the moment idea by our son Shaun, who often rides different sections of the Legacy Trail and raves about his adventures, encouraged us to load up our bikes and hit the trail. As we loaded the car, I was sure to remember to pack snacks, drinks, and my cooling neck towel which keeps me comfortable in the summer. We drove to Payne Park in downtown Sarasota, the newest part of the trail and it was virtually empty with lots of parking spaces. They have a great little restaurant there as well called Park Cafe, but it was closed at the time. (Do check it out, though!) It was a cool and beautiful morning with few riders on the path. We rode, often in the shade by many interesting homes, never boring as each area has its own charm. The smooth paved surface is easy to ride the entire way. Excellent signage along the trail provides both directions and information on local history. Yellow

emergency markers are embedded into the trail every 0.05 miles giving your location. Covered rest stations and benches are located every mile or so. Restrooms and water are at most trailheads. Local parks offer full facilities, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Old railroad mile markers are quaint reminders of the Legacy Trail's past. There are even areas where the train tracks are still standing. Great photo opportunities! The Legacy Trail runs along an old Seaboard Railroad corridor between Venice and Sarasota. Beginning at the Historic Venice Train Depot, the first third of the way to Oscar Scherer State Park is the most scenic and diverse. Recently extended to downtown Sarasota, at Payne Park where we started, the trail totals 18.5 miles. Well maintained and almost entirely straight, this is a popular trail enjoyed by recreational and road bikers, walkers, joggers, and inline skaters. With the addition of the Northport Connector (fall 2022), the Legacy Trail is evolving into a regional trail system that will total more than 30 miles of continuous biking and 9 miles more if you bike south from the Train Depot onto the Venetian Waterway Park Trail. At one point the chain dislodged from Rich’s bike but fortunately a few steps right

in front of us was one of the parks complete with bathrooms, benches, water fountains and bike repair station. It was an oasis in the middle of the trail. I was amazed with the repair station which is pictured in this article. It was complete with a tire pressure gauge, air pump, tools, and an area to put the bike up onto.

We were soon on our way again and decided to turn around after another mile or so before we got too tired. I highly encourage everyone to walk, jog, bike or skate The Legacy Trail at one part or another and take advantage of another great resource in our part of paradise! Have a healthy, safe, and fun summer!

New in the Area — Breakfast at Victoria’s By Jane Bartnett Your first visit to Breakfast at Victoria’s may well be the start of a brand-new tradition. You’ll want to go back again and again. Located at 4141 S. Tamiami Trail in the center of the Chili’s Plaza shopping center, this cheerful and welcoming restaurant and Italian bakery serves breakfast, brunch and lunch, as well as delicious breads and pastries that are ready to take home. It also caters and can accommodate small private parties. Wit h i ndo or a nd outdo or seating, the restaurant can seat up to 125 people. “We are family friendly,” said chef and co-owner Eleanora Raso, who along with her husband, Luigi Raso, runs the new eatery that the couple named in honor of their first daughter, Victoria. The story of how this new addition to the Sarasota breakfast and lunch dining scene came to be is as endearing as the food. Owning a restaurant was a longtime dream for the young couple, who met in the kitchen of another Sarasota restaurant in 2013. Both are trained chefs who studied at a leading culinary school in Italy. Both bring years of experience in the restaurant industry to their new business, which opened in September. A native of Naples, Luigi spends most of his day in the kitchen. Eleanora, who hails from Florence, manages the front of the house. Although the two chefs excel at creating many dishes, both say

that baking is their passion. Sarasota became their home because of Eleanor’s family ties. As a child and young adult, she vacationed in Sarasota for more than 30 years. Her grandfather first came to Sarasota in the 1950s and became a U.S. citizen. “I always loved com i ng to Sarasota,” Eleanora Raso said. “I grew up here, and in Italy.” The couple married and are now the parents of two young daughters. “Sarasota is our home,” she said. Last year, the couple’s plans to create a restaurant and bakery that paid tribute to their Italian heritage, as well as to their new home, came true. Their restaurant and bakery blend classic American breakfast and lunch favorites along with Italian delicacies that highlight the regional cooking of the couple’s Italian homeland. “All of our ing redients are locally sourced,” Raso said. “We believe that we have created very interesting menus.” For b r e a k f a st, d i n e r s c a n choose from eggs, avocado toast, pancakes and waffles, along with French and Italian style breakfast items. American coffee as well a cappuccino and espresso are available. There’s also a kids’ menu. For lunch, there are platters and paninis, a pear salad with walnuts and gorgonzola cheese; roast beef with blue cheese and spring mix; seared tuna, olives and tomatoes and more.

Eleanora and Luigi Raso recently saw a dream come true when they opened a breakfast spot on South Tamiami Trail. (photo by Jane Bartnett)

Tempting brunch offerings are more exotic and include truffled eggs; eggs Benedict; seared tuna on a brioche bun; fried soft-shell crab; pork belly with sautéed black figs and a vinegar/honey glaze; Millefoglie di Melanzane, a grilled eggplant dish with fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes and basil; as well as avocado toast and Cornetto French toast with sautéed apples, brandy and cinnamon

topped with creme fraiche. M i mo s a s, b el l i n i s, Ap erol spritzers and sangria, Italian white and red, as well as sparkling wines, are sold by the glass or the bottle. Tempting desserts, baked fresh daily in the kitchen, include a selection of pastries, tiramisu, ricotta e pera, caprese al cioccolato, cheesecake alle fragole, mousse al cioccolato, torta della nonna and

profiteroles al cioccolato. On your way out the door, stop at the bakery counter and select from a variety of fresh baked breads that are ready to take home. Bestsellers include focaccia, ciabatta, multigrain cranberry and Sfilantino — “a softer version of the baguetteit which is crusty on the outside, but soft on the inside,” Rosa explained. Cool Treats for Your Hot Dog

By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect The weather is heating up—and so are our furry friends. While higher temperatures mean more fun in the sun, they also mean your dog might be overheated. Fortunately, there are a number of great ways to cool off your canine. Here we offer a few tips and tricks to keep your pup healthy while cooling them off, plus a listing of our favorite terrific treats to help you and your dog beat the heat during the steamy summer months.

Your #1 Watchout When it’s hot, there are few things better than a cold scoop of ice cream. As you might know, dogs love it too. However, ice cream is a major watchout during the summer months as the same tasty treat we enjoy can be unhealthy for dogs. Unsurprisingly, the high caloric intake delivered by ice cream can cause weight gain. Additionally, the excess dairy can cause vomiting and diarrhea. But even worse, some ice cream also contains ingredients like xylitol, which is toxic for dogs. And there are a few other items to keep an eye. Though your pup may be a fan, don’t let harmful ingredients like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, or chives sneak past you. They can do just as much damage whether fresh or frozen.

Homemade and Healthy Now for the good news. Despite the dangers of some people-friendly dairy options, your pup is in luck – there are still a number of refreshing treats that can keep your dog cool and hydrated. In fact, with a little time and effort, you can whip up some healthy homemade options right in your kitchen…including ice cream! That’s right: with a few simple ingredients, you can make your own creamy, delicious, doggie-friendly ice cream. Just take a pup approved fruit like a half banana, add four ounces of plain, no-fat, or low-fat yogurt, top it off with a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter, and blend! You can serve immediately or transfer

to small containers and freeze for another quick treat later on. Similarly, homemade “pupsicles” are super easy and will yield several perfectly portioned savory (yes, savory) treats to cool off even the hottest days. Simply fill an ice tray with fat-free, low, or zero sodium chicken or beef broth and freeze. If you want to mix it up, add some finely diced carrots, apples, lean meat, or other dog-friendly food. To kick things up another notch, your dog’s Kong toy works great as a cold container when paired with any combination of soft, dog appropriate ingredients. We suggest plain yogurt, bananas, a bit of canned pumpkin, plain ground or shredded lean meat, diced carrots, or apples. Toss ‘em in the Kong and freeze for at least 2 hours or, even better, overnight. Of course, nothing is more refreshing on a hot day than watermelon—and dogs can enjoy it too! Just remember to remove the rind and seeds, cut it into chunks, and serve in moderation. And while it should go without saying, we’ll say it anyway: make sure your dog always has easy access to fresh water more than any other cooling treat—particularly during the summer months. To boost the refreshment and control intake at the same time, throw a few ice cubes in a bowl – they’ll love it.

Doggie Grocery Goodies Cooking not your thing, or just short on time? Your local independent pet retailer has got your back with plenty of fantastic frozen goodies. Puppy Scoops by Puppy Cake is an all-natural doggie ice cream mix.

Just add water, freeze, and—voilà—a creamy puppy treat. The mix is shelfstable up to 12 months and, after mixing, will stay fresh up to 6 weeks in the freezer. Made with real yogurt, The Bear & The Rat frozen yogurt dog treats come in amazing flavors like Bacon & Peanut Butter, Bananas & Peanut Butter, or Pumpkin & Cinnamon. They also offer a nice opportunity for a supplement bump as their frozen goat’s milk yogurt comes complete with helpful prebiotics and digestive enzymes. Finally, Boss Dog’s Greek frozen yogurt treat is available in a trio of popular flavors: Peanut Butter & Banana, Cheddar & Bacon, and Pumpkin & Cinnamon. Crafted using 100% human-grade ingredients, it’s also lactose free, easy to digest, and loaded with probiotics. Whether you’re mixing up refreshers at home or grabbing cool frozen products at the pet store, always remember that treats like these should comprise no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. It’s a good rule of thumb that can help you and your dog have fun and stay cool all summer long.

Truth be told, I’m not very social! I really prefer humans! I’m twelve so I sleep most of the day! I lost my big sister Cholla last October and have learned to like being the only dog! We were from the same breeder in Las Vegas! Heart Love Havanese! Cholla was an ornery little gal who taught me to bark at other dogs so together we were a terrible duo! I’m happier now as I have my owner all to myself and I have stopped barking at other dogs! Well, almost. The look you see on my face in the picture is constant! I follow Karen everywhere! Yes, everywhere! She is never alone. My eyes are always on her! If your dog or pet has a story to tell, please contact Karen at 941-855-0347 and set up an interview and photo shoot! You, too, can be featured in the monthly column in The Landings Eagle. Hope to see you in the hood! Woofies, Panda

A DOGPerfect Customer

She was suffering from severe allergies, she had itchy, inflamed skin. Her vet treated her environmental allergies, but nothing seemed to help. Our Senior Pet Food Nutritionist, Kyle, thought it may be a food allergy and recommended a few products to help, including switching her diet to a dog food specifically targeted at addressing dermo issues.

5 days later, Daisy's skin is smooth and allergy symptoms are gone.

Tummy Trouble? Here’s How to Tackle Your Dog’s Digestive Issues By Kyle Baker, Senior Pet Food Nutritionist at DOGPerfect From run-of-the-mill table scraps, to the kids’ homework (allegedly), to household garbage, dogs are notorious for eating things they aren’t meant to consume. Believe it or not, this behavior comes with its own medical terminology: dietary indiscretion. And, as you might imagine, it’s one of the most common causes of doggie digestive issues. Though gut grumbles resulting from dietary indiscretion might be the fault of your pup, most digestive issues are not. If your dog is having tummy troubles, here are some likely triggers and what you can do to soothe them.

Identify the Cause: Toxicity, Contamination and Infection Let’s be honest: many dogs get away with eating things they probably shouldn’t. But some substances—like certain types of plants or flowers, and foods like chocolate or grapes—can be toxic with symptoms ranging from upset to tremors or changes in heart rate. In rare cases, ingesting these can even be fatal. Don’t take the chance with your pup – make a mental list of everyday items that could cause serious harm, and be on alert if your dog encounters them. More commonly, consumption of contaminated food, water, or stool is how many dogs derail their digestive tract. The bacteria from contamination can irritate the digestive system causing vomiting or diarrhea. Contamination in other items like soil or an infected flea can introduce intestinal parasites, from a variety of worms to protozoa like giardia and coccidia. This can lead to scooting, crouching, vomiting, diarrhea, distended abdomen, or weight loss. If you’ve got a puppy, be on the lookout for parasitic symptoms as young canines can

contract them from their mother, in utero or via nursing. And keep in mind, while intestinal parasites are treatable, they’re also preventable, and the best course of action is to see your vet annually for a little preventive maintenance. Additionally, viral infections can result from close contact with sick dogs, and such infections often can’t be treated with antibiotics. In these cases, all you can do is manage your pup’s symptoms and make sure they get plenty of fluids.

Identify the Cause: Diet, Stress and the Rare Emergency Looking for a change of pace in your dog’s diet? Not a bad thing, but err on the side the caution. Abruptly switching your dog’s daily menu can cause gastrointestinal upset and even have the opposite effect of the effort by resulting in decreased appetite.

If you decide to change your dog’s diet, we recommend doing so gradually to allow their digestive system time to adapt. If your dog has more on their figurative plate than usual, they could end up suffering from stress diarrhea. Travel, boarding, a move, or big changes at home can all elevate stress levels. If you know there are life adjustments on the way, you may want to speak with your dog’s vet about preventative measures. One final, less common, but still notable cause of canine digestive issues is bloat. When food or gas stretch a dog’s stomach resulting in distension and the stomach is twisted or rotated, gas may become trapped inside. This can lead to a litany of dangerous health issues, even death. If you notice your dog’s stomach has become distended, or if you witness retching, panting, or restlessness, act immediately.

broth can also combat dehydration from water lost to diarrhea and vomiting. In the event symptoms worsen, persist, or if your dog is higher risk due to age or chronic issues, call your vet. If symptoms are more severe, such as listlessness, fever, bloody discharge, excessive shaking, or dry heaves, it’s time to get on the phone. And if your pup is showing abdominal pain or signs of bloat, again, do not delay. There are a lot of ways your dog’s digestive issues can happen, and thankfully lots of simple ways to take care of it. While most of us won’t ever have to treat our pups for the worst of these, it’s best to be in the know to keep our dogs—and their tummies—happy and healthy.

Home Remedies and When to Call the Vet So, you’ve got a healthy dog, but they’re showing mild or brief digestive symptoms? We recommend a few simple home treatments. First, dial back the dietary bells and whistles. Most vets suggest taking the menu in a bland direction with simple foods that can help rebalance your pup’s digestion. Second, pet-formulated probiotics that reintroduce positive digestive influences are a great way to go. We love Dr. Woow’s Digestion Soft Chews for an added boost of digestive support. Next, raw goat’s milk offers a whole food probiotic to level out your pup’s gut flora, help eliminate intestinal inflammation, and prevent symptoms like diarrhea. Lastly, give bone broth a try. Containing gelatin that aids digestion and reduces stomach acid, bone

Yours in Sports By Dee Ricapito

A joint tennis/pickleball players party was hosted by John McFetridge, and Avis & David Brodess. Over 50 sports friends gathered on a beautiful Sarasota evening. Some are either “coming-or-going” leaving for the season or going on vacation; all took part in this fun evening in Lakeside Clubhouse and the outdoor deck. Who knows whether they emptied their refrigerators for the season or brought the best they had to the table; everything tasted great, and everyone enjoyed it! … Kudos to Avis, David and John.

JUNE 2022

THE PHOTO SHOP By Bob Manteiga Landscape Photography

Many people think of landscape photography as nothing more than taking a pretty picture of a sunset, a field of flowers, or a lake surrounded by majestic mountains. The truth is, they’re not entirely wrong. Landscape photog raphy is t ypically defined as photography that captures the presence of nature, while focusing on spaces, or on the relationship of objects within these spaces. Often, when you hear people talk about landscape photography, they mention terms like orientation, direction, or panorama. A landscape refers to an image that is generally wider than it is tall; that is, it is shot in a horizontal orientation. In portrait photography the orientation is vertical. The image is generally taller than it is wide. A landscape photo should strive to be dramatic, evoke feelings or tell a story. Whether shooting in color or in black and white, a good landscape photographer should always focus on four essential elements: light, original subject matter, a clean background, and interesting composition. Of these elements, however, the most important by far is light. Here are some tips you should consider: when a single subject is the most important element of the photograph, as in portrait photography, a low range aperture is preferred, to achieve the appropriate depth of field. For landscape photography, on the other hand, one should select a mid to high range aperture setting to gain a broader and clearer panoramic view. Use a tripod when available, and always make sure your camera’s image stabilizer is in the on position. Use a good polarizing filter to avoid or eliminate glare. Select a low ISO level, somewhere between 150-400. This, of course, will vary depending on the time of day or the weather conditions. Shoot during the “golden hour,” usually late afternoon or sunset, when the sun is not directly overhead. Bright mid-day sun can produce sharp contrasts and unwanted shadows. This month’s The Photo Shop includes nine photographs by five different Landings photographers. They will be numbered individually for easy identification. #1. Water Mill by Rick Waller. This photo was shot on film. #2. White Sand by Rick Waller. #3. Two Rivers at Junction Pool by Nancy Isseks. #4. Rowboat by Nancy Isseks. #5. Monona Duck by Joel Weinstein. Shot with a Nikon D3200 camera using Ektachrome slide film. #6. Temperature Inversion by Joel Weinstein. Shot with a Nikon D3200 camera using Ektachrome slide film. #7. Peek a Boo by Bob Manteiga. Shot with a Leica Lumix LX7 at an aperture of F5 and a film speed of 1,600. #8. Crystal Sunset by Bob Manteiga. Shot with a Samsung 22 digital phone camera at an F Stop of 4.3. I include this shot to give you all an idea of how advanced some phone cameras have become. #9. Unnamed photo by Gary Warren. This is the final column of The Photo Shop for this season. If the interest is there, we hope to be back in the fall. So, please, keep sending in your photos to roberto@uri.edu.

Landings Business Owner — Objects of Magic By Jane Bartnett Siesta Key, with its clear crystal quartz sand, is the “chakra” — or energy point — of the ocean, says Gaelle Wizenberg, who has created a new company called Objects of Magic. Her Gulf Gate store offers gifts of candles — “powered with premium essential oils,” Wizenberg said — and uplifting spells to recite while the candles burn. It also features an array of crystals and oils. “That’s why Siesta Key is a healing place that attracts people who want positive change in their lives,” she said. Wizenberg knows quite a lot about positive change. A former toy company executive and designer, Wizenberg was born in Paris and raised in the French Caribbean. She enjoyed a very successful career and lived with her husband, who was also an executive in the toy business, in Montreal and Ottawa, Canada. The couple moved to Hong Kong for several years before returning to Ottawa, and then on to Los Angeles. As a young working mother, Wizenberg began to think “What is my place in the world?” Drawing on her design and business experience in the toy world, she decided to create a company devoted to reusable baby items, including a line of cloth diapers. In 2010, she oversaw the launch of an international luxury brand of eco-friendly, cloth diapers and organic baby products called Charlie Banana — named for her young daughter Charlie. Drawing on her business contacts, Wizenberg was able to place Charlie Banana products in the U.S. at Babies R Us, Bye Bye Baby, and Target, as well as in 66 countries around the world. After great success, in 2020 Wizenberg sold her company to Procter & Gamble. In 2021, after she and her family vacationed on Siesta Key, they decided to relocate from Los Angeles to Sarasota and now lives in The Landings.

“We all fell in love with Siesta Key and the whole region,” she said. Following a cross country move and the sale of her company, Wizenberg was ready for another challenge. “I needed another baby,” she said with a laugh. She added, “I have a need to be creative, I’m an artist. After COVID, I felt that by creating Objects of Magic I could create a business that can inspire people to be more hopeful and to stay positive. “Especially today — we all need help. If you ask the universe for what you want, it will come to you. If your serenity is good, the rest of your life will be, too. We are all effected by nature.” While living in Los Angeles, she studied Feng Shui with a master and became fascinated by natural crystals and what they do. “Crystals,” she explained, are a part of nature and each crystal has a different energy. “Tourmaline offers protection, rose quartz offers happiness, amethysts help with sleep, and amber is believed to absorb pain and negative energy.” Drawing on this principal of positive energy, the company’s message is to “Nurture the witch in you; surround yourself with powerful energy and to be strong and get ready to set your goals and achieve your biggest dreams,” Wizenberg said. Object of Mag ic offers sets of t he company’s own votive candles, crystals, Coventry Creation candles and oils, sage and smudging sets, home sprays, beautiful crystals both small and large, and a line of soy- and corn-free meat. The candles and crystals are ethically sourced to create a “Wishing ritual to each moon cycle,” Wizenberg said. She explained that taking the time to set goals and true intentions is important for an individual’s peace of mind and life

success, and finding extra assistance from the universe. “The moon brings energy,” she said. “Have faith in the things that you ask for. Meditate quietly on the days that the moon changes. As the candle burns, ask the universe to help with what is going on in your life. All religions make use of candles. They help to restore our faith.” Sold in groups of five, Objects of Magic’s own brand of boxed candles are color-coded to match the desired wish or spell and retail for $13.99. Sets include these titles: Abundance, Career, Clearing, Cryptos, Good Luck, Happy Home, Health, Love, New Path Success, Open, Prosperity, Protection, Self-Love & Happiness, and Sell Your House. A subscription candle service is also available.

Each set of candles and matching spells carries with it suggested crystals that will complement the spell or wish and with its own energy. “We wanted to make it easy to feel better when you need that extra assistance from the universe,” said Wizenberg. Objects of Magic products are available online at objectsofmagic.com and in the store at 2106 Bispham Rd., in Gulf Gate. Hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thavma Yoga, at 3800 S. Tamiami Trail, and The Higher Realm, at 4232 S. Tamiami Trail, also feature the items. “I’ve been told that I inspire people to be better and to find their purpose,” Wizenberg said. “I hope that Objects of Magic will help people to find their passive energy and to learn to ride the energy that is sent to you.”

Dad Said: “Father’s Day Jokes” Compiled by: Dee Ricapito Dad said: “I spent a lot of time, money and effort childproofing my house …but the kids still get in.“ Dad said: “My wife is in a really bad mood today. Just because I got more Fathers’ Day cards than we have kids “ Dad said: “Did you hear about the kidnapping at school?” Son: “No, what happened?” Dad: “The teacher woke him up.” A little boy asked, “Daddy, how much does it cost to get married?” Dad said: “I don’t know son, I’m still paying.” Dad said: “When does a joke become a ‘dad joke’? When it becomes apparent!”

Four things you will NEVER hear your dad say: 1. Would you turn that music up, please? 2. Hey, that tattoo looks great. We should both go get new ones. 3. Yeah sure, go ahead and take my car. And here’s $50 bucks for gas too. 4. Your mother and I are going away for the weekend. Why don’t you just invite all your friends over for a party?
