AT THE HYDRANT My new family calls me Ivy. Last year, at this time, I was running wild in the woods of southern Ohio with 10 other abandoned dogs. A farmer tried to feed us, but realized there were too many dogs for him to care for. He called a local rescue agency that helped to catch all but one of us. The agency said they were full and would have to euthanize us. Four of us were a golden color, so the agency called the rescue organization in Northeast Ohio called GRIN (Golden Retrievers in Need) and asked GRIN to pick up the four yellow dogs. Lucky for us they picked up me and my daughter and the two other dogs that could have been my offspring. We were all thin and suffering from sores, infections, and allergies. Meanwhile, my soon to be new parents and big brother, Riley, had just returned to Ohio. Riley missed all his friends from the Del Tura dog park and walked around the house looking very lonely. Our parents decided to apply to GRIN for another Golden Retriever. Riley was their sixth Golden Retriever. Since they asked for a retired breeding dog, I was a match. It turns out that I am mostly a Labrador Retriever and not Golden at all. Too late, I am now a member of the family. I love my big

brother Riley. He teaches me everything and I follow his lead. I have a lot to learn. I didn’t even know what “sit” means. I am very happy in Del Tura. When we go walking the residents pet me and sometimes give treats. At the dog park, I still get to run with a pack of dogs, but these dogs are all friendly, well fed, and loved by a family.

Rain, Rain, Go Away…. It’s rainy season in Southwest Florida once again and we have certainly had our share of thunderstorms this summer. However, as you can see in these photos from July 2001, the more things change the more they stay the same.

Thank you Stan Young for sharing these with us. We are in the middle of hurricane season flooding caused by excessive rainfall is always a possibility. Have a plan and remember: Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

CERT INFORMATION Your Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) has been staying busy over the last couple of months. Our team meets on the first Wednesday of every month in the Starlight Ballroom. At each meeting we try to train in different rescue assistance techniques. One of our key people, Michael Abbitt, has trained and served as a first responder. He has been essential in instructing our team on new skills each month. A couple of the key points we have worked on are traversing in flood water(s) and proper use and hygiene when using PPE (personal protective equipment). Going forward, in August, we will be establishing work zones and assigning zone leaders for our community. In August we will also train using the team’s walkie talkies so we

are prepared should an emergency arise. In September, the North Ft. Myers Fire Department will be holding a seminar on making, and the proper use of, Stop the Bleed kits. October is a Lunch and Learn Sign Language seminar. This seminar will educate us on dealing with the deaf in an emergency situation. Some of our team members are also attending EOC (emergency operations center) training. Some of the points they work on are medical drills and how to perform in a shelter. We are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Bertie Dugo, the President of our C.E.R.T. group. Remember, it is Hurricane Season…have a plan in place in case of an emergency. ~ Lisa Bellanca

CRAFTIN’ IN “THE HOOD” Come join us on Tuesdays, after coffee until about 3:00, in the Starlight Ballroom. We quilt, knit, crochet, spin wool, and do other various crafts. We all work on our own projects, but occasionally have a class to learn a technique.

Bring your own equipment and supplies. If you bring a sewing machine, bring an extension cord as the outlets are few and far between. For more information, call Wendy Wells at 309-264-9147. I hope to see you there!

DEL TURA HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR By Darlene Fincham SAVE THE DATE: November 4th & 5th, 2022. Planning for the highly anticipated annual Del Tura Holiday Craft Fair is well under way, and 2022 is taking shape to be the best one yet. We currently have over 60 local vendors, with close to 1/3 of them being fellow Del Turians. They will be bringing with them unique hand-made craft items such as ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood, pottery, wearable and decorative sewn, crocheted, and knitted items, holiday decorations, sports items and much, much more. With so many creative gift options, the Del Tura Craft Fair is a perfect opportunity to knock out some of that holiday shopping, while supporting local small business crafters. The reason Del Tura Craft Fair is considered to be the best around is because of our wonderful volunteers. I can’t say enough great things about Del Tura’s volunteers and would love for you to join this fantastic team. We are already working on building our volunteer team and we need people like you for the following

positions: Vendor Helpers, Vendor Aides, Raffle Table Helpers, Greeters, Parking Attendants, Golf Cart Shuttle Drivers, Kitchen Help and Outside Flyer Distributors. That said, if you are interested in volunteering, or just have questions about volunteering, please send an email to delturacraftfair@yahoo.com or come to Tuesday Coffee and we will have a volunteer sign-up sheet there. Also, if you are a crafter, and would like to donate a new handmade item toward this fundraiser, please send an email to delturacraftfair@yahoo.com. As in the past, Friday, November 4th, 5-7, the craft fair will be open to Del Tura Shoppers only, while Saturday, November 5th, 9-2, shopping will be open to the public. Come, bring a friend, enjoy getting together with neighbors, listening to holiday music, strolling through the vendors creations located throughout all of the ballrooms, and take some chances on the beautiful hand-made items at the Raffle Table. This is a charity event and is sponsored by The Del Tura HOA.

REFLECTIONS By Dianne J. Roderick

“Lessons Learned from My Father’s Garden” “It often happens to children-and sometimes to gardeners-that they are given gifts of value of which they do not perceive until much later.” The summer season gives one plenty of time to relax and reflect on memories of the past. Maybe it was the fact that we were spending our vacation back in the neighborhood of my early childhood, but as I sat relaxing on our daughter’s deck that overlooked her back yard garden, my thoughts took me back to those years that I spent trailing along after my dad helping him tend our vegetable garden. What patience he had! As a young child I never realized that a garden could teach so many of life’s virtuous lessons. Sure, we appreciated the bountiful harvest it produced, but never realized then the commitment that it took to produce those delicious vegetables. (I can still remember eating those luscious, red tomatoes right off the vine!) Working beside my dad in our garden was much more than a physical task, it was precious quality time spent with the most important man in my life. Of course, I didn’t realize it at that young age, but during those special times, Dad was actually sharing the gifts that he learned from his parents and grandparents. Dad may have inherited a green thumb but the work and patience that he put into that garden made it even greener! All those beautiful leaves that we continually raked in the fall would later become very useful in the spring as we prepared for our garden. Of course, when the fish scraps, coffee grinds and the yard clippings were added to the growing mound throughout the fall, that mulch pile grew into a huge mountain of fertilizer! Having a garden in those days was a necessity for many families. Many families in our old neighborhood didn’t have their own backyard space and would come together to tend community gardens. Our neighbors would put in time, before or after their regular jobs, to help each other out. Each of them came to help with a strong faith that their hard work would produce a plentiful harvest! Caring and sharing that’s what it was all about! I watched in amazement each year as those seedlings in our garden grew into hardy plants; tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, lettuce, squash - each row, planted so evenly with love and patience by a man that had much more than an inherited green thumb. In my dad’s garden I was taught many important life lessons. Little did I realize then the magnitude of each one, but as the years go by, I am so very thankful for each and every one of them. Those little seeds grew into strong plants with lots of love and caring as did I, and the precious time spent with my dad will always be a heartfelt memory each time I find myself daydreaming in the garden. “The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear, resentment or love. What seeds will you plant there? -Buddha God Bless Everyone!

FISH NEWS

By Ginnie Benjamins

SUMMER FISH NEWS It is certainly HOT in Del Tura during these summer months. However, FISH is still providing rides for residents who may need assistance. We have a trailer full of medical equipment for anyone who might need a walker, wheelchair, crutches, a shower or potty chair, or just a cane. We have it all, so please do not buy anything new; just call our FISH line (239) 9973474. We will deliver the item directly to your door and pick it up when you do not need it anymore. You may keep the equipment for as long as you need it and at NO cost to you! The rides are also at no cost. The driver volunteers

use their car, gas and time. We are so fortunate to have drivers that will drive for FISH. It will not be so hot in October, except in the clubhouse kitchen. FISH will be sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast on October 1st. Pancakes, sausages, bacon, juice and coffee - what a great breakfast! We hope you will join us and support our wonderful organization!

The Del Tura Grounds Committee consists of volunteers that provide regular general surveillance of all common areas to ensure that the buildings and grounds are healthy, attractive and in compliance with the residential prospectus. They review and make recommendations for repairs and updates as needed. If you are interested in making a difference by overseeing an area of your interest, to identify repairs needed, as well as repairs completed, please contact delturagrounds@yahoo.com. We would like to thank Julie Killough, as well as HomeTown America, for how nice the Clubhouse and attached buildings look now that everything has been freshly painted. We’d also like to thank Mike Fitzgibbons and the maintenance team for everything they are doing to get things back in shape. The administration office has indicated that the bobcat has been repaired, therefore the mailbox replacement project is back in action. It was also mentioned that all pools are fully outfitted with umbrellas at this time. Please note that only Hometown America (Del Tura) personnel are authorized to move umbrellas or furniture from its original location. If you spot something in a common area that needs repair please send an email, including pictures and exact location (very important) to delturagrounds@yahoo.com and a work order will be requested through the Administration Office. For larger items, which are capital expenditures, our HOA leadership continues to work with Hometown America on a monthly basis. Residential property issues are outside the Grounds Committee and HOA jurisdiction, so please work directly with Del Tura’s administration team.

CALLING ALL READING BUDDIES! “Virtual” reading buddies are needed for Littleton Elementary. Throughout the course of the year the volunteer will purchase five books for their buddy. The benchmark dates are Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and end-of-year. You will write a letter of introduction to your buddy, and your buddy will write a thank-you letter back to you. Volunteers provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope with each book. This program has been in existence for two years. For information, please contact Gail Dellar (601) 605-0507 or email gaildellar@bellsouth.net

Avoid these estate-planning mistakes When many people hear the words “estate planning,” they assume it’s just for the wealthy. But that’s not the case because everyone can benefit from an estate plan. And when you’re creating one, you’ll want to avoid some common mistakes. Before we look at those mistakes, let’s go over what estate planning is designed to accomplish. Essentially, an estate plan allows you to pass on your assets in the way you desire. But it can also specify other actions, such as naming someone to care for your minor children if you were no longer around. In creating an estate plan, several key documents are involved, including a will, a trust, a financial power of attorney and a medical power of attorney or a health care directive. Now, let’s consider a few estate-planning mistakes: • Not communicating your plans. You’ll need to inform your family about whom you’ve chosen as executor – the individual who will administer your estate – and whom you’ve named as the trustee – the person who will manage your trust’s assets. (You can also choose a trust company to handle this duty.) And to help avoid unpleasant surprises when your estate is being settled, consider letting your children or other close relatives know who will be receiving what. • Not reviewing your plans periodically – Once you create your estate plans, don’t forget about them. Over time, your personal situation may change – you may experience a remarriage or bring in new children. Your interests may change, too – perhaps you’ll become deeply involved in supporting a favorite charitable organization. Given these and other potential changes, you’ll want to review your estate plans once in a while to see if they need to be modified. • Not updating beneficiary designations – Every so often, you may want to review the beneficiary designations on your life insurance policies, investment accounts and retirement assets. As mentioned, changes in your life, such as remarriage and the addition of new children, may affect your beneficiaries. Beneficiary designations are powerful and can even supersede your will, so you’ll want to update them as needed. Also, if you have a 529 education savings plan, you’ll want to name a successor owner – someone who can take over your 529 if you were to pass away. • Not re-registering assets placed in a trust – A living trust offers you many potential benefits, such as the ability to bypass the time-consuming and highly public process of probate when it’s time to settle your estate. However, just establishing the trust, by itself, may be insufficient – you likely also need to re-register assets, such as your investments, so they are officially owned by the trust, not by you. This is essential for the trust to work as you intended. Here’s one other mistake – not getting the help you need. Estate planning can be complex, so you’ll want to work with an attorney, and possibly with your financial advisor and tax professional, too. By avoiding key mistakes and working with a qualified team of professionals, you can create and maintain an estate plan that will help you leave the legacy you desire.

Happy summer! A reminder that Our Del Tura Creative Writer’s Workshop is on a temporary pause for the summer. We’ll take things up again in the fall, but I’ll continue to submit our work for your review. It seems appropriate to now select a challenge that deals with travel. I’ve provided two responses, and I hope you enjoy them. Remember, if you enjoy writing and are interested in joining our group, please email me. My email address is ndavy01@gmail.com. Please provide me with your name, your email address, and your cell phone number. I can meet with you before the season starts to review the material, then I’ll reach out before each meeting with time and location updates. As always, from all of us -enjoy your summer! ~ Nancy Davy Challenge Nine: Taking a page from the Travel Journal The travel journal, one of the more popular forms of journaling, uses practices such as scrapbooking and including photos and small memorabilia, such as tickets, coins, drawings, etc. to commemorate the details of a most-important visit. As the intention of this challenge is to use our words to describe a memorable travel experience more than merely recording highlights, I’d like you to choose a favorite location that you have visited. Draw out your descriptions of visual observations and remember to draw your senses into recalling your favorite

place. Please include your emotions and tell how this particular experience made you feel. Challenge 9: A Vacation Place The Alamo by Charlotte Ping When I was a youngster, we lived in Texas. My father was a career Army man and I never knew where we would be moving to with the next assignment. I liked moving around because I saw so many places that I would not have seen otherwise. Once we went to San Antonio to see the Alamo. I was disappointed at first; it was nothing like I had imagined. Here it was, in the middle of town with a CVS across the street. I did realize that in 1836 it would have been in the empty countryside and San Antonio had been built around it. Still, it was a shock to me. Perhaps that was because I also thought it was much smaller than I had imagined it to be. It is only 63 feet wide and 32 feet tall. Another surprising thing was there were no fences around it or any type of enclosures. It was out in the open and this was in 1956. Nevertheless, the history is important to Texas. Originally the Alamo was a church, then a hospital, before it was a fort. The name “Alamo” means cottonwood. It was called that because it was in a grove of cottonwood trees. It was captured by Mexican general Santa Ana on March 6, 1836. Two thousand soldiers attacked the fort, which only had 185 men. They held out for 13 days before being captured. Continued from the previous page All of them were then killed in less than two hours, including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and Colonel William Travis. There were 15 survivors: women, children and the servant-slaves with them. Travis had been sent by Sam Houston to assess the situation at the Alamo with the Mexican army. Houston felt the fort’s loss was not important since it was so small. Travis didn’t feel that way and disobeyed his orders. He was one of the soldiers that died at the Alamo. I still remember the Alamo’s pale, tan-yellow limestone coloring with its rough looking finish. The doors were narrow, with small rooms. It hardly looked like a fort or a hospital. It did resemble a church, with the arches on the main entrance and over the doorways. The pillars were tall and impressive. The fort looked like the missions in California that were built by the Franciscans priests in the early 1800’s. I still think of that trip as one of my best vacations as a 15-year-old teenager. Others must too; 2.5 million tourists visit the Alamo yearly. Challenge Nine: Taking a Page from the Travel Journal by Cindy Swisher “Memorable travel experience” does not always equal “enjoyable travel experience.” I have spent the better part of a week stuck at a campsite with a chicken pox-infested toddler while the rest of my family played in the sand and swam in the ocean. I have driven all the way from southern Georgia to lower Michigan in the cab of a U-Haul crammed to overflowing with five kids and two adults, because

the van we took to Florida died on the way home. I’ve been rained on, stranded, and lost. All those experiences have been memorable, to say the least. But for this exercise, I will focus on a couple of “takeyour-breath-away” moments I’ve experienced while traveling; moments that were both memorable and enjoyable. As a newlywed, I took a road trip out west with my brand-new husband. We decided a stop at the Grand Canyon was in order. Everything I knew about the canyon came from the 15 minutes my teacher spent on it in Geography class in fourth grade – (yes, they still taught Geography when I was in elementary school). I was reading the map as we drove into the park and wasn’t giving my full attention to my surroundings. As we climbed and curved and got closer to our destination, I put the map down and started to take in the view from my window. I will never forget the moment we came around a bend in the road and the majesty of the Grand Canyon hit me in the chest like a knockout punch. It was overpowering. All the breath left my lungs. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t move. There before us, consuming every bit of space was a giant chasm, miles across and seemingly endless. The tall pines at its summit gave way to more colors and shades of orange and gold and red than I knew existed. We parked the car, got out and stood, motionless, for what seemed like an eternity, taking it in. Who, looking at this miracle, this masterpiece of nature, could doubt the existence of God? Who could explain this any other way? Continued on page 24

PICKLEBALL FUN By Jamie Wyman I hope you are all enjoying yourselves wherever you are spending your summer. It’s been a little rough start here in Michigan, but I have confidence it will get nice and stay nice soon (I hope). Let’s “start” the game!!! To begin, the side with the ball, and the server on the deuce side (right side facing the net) calls the score. “0-0start” or “0-0-2”. The first number is your score, the second number is your opponents score, and the start or 2 is the server number. Each side gets 2 servers, except at the start of the game. The “starting side” only gets one server so that’s why you say, “start or 2” for your server designation. I know it sounds confusing; again, if you watch Pickle Ball on YouTube or just come watch a game as you are trying to learn, this may be less confusing. The server then serves the ball cross court over the net into the “serving box” on the other side. The ball can touch the net but must land in the box. The ball can touch the baseline (the furthest line at the back of the court), or the sidelines of the serving box and still be good. The ball CAN NOT touch the front line of the serving box or land in the kitchen. If this happens, the serve is no good. If the serve meets the above rules, the serve is good and is played by the receiving team. The receiving team must let the ball bounce before returning it back. Ok, enough for now! Again, watch some YouTube videos to help you understand the game.

GARDEN CLUB Hurricane Proof Your Landscape Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center have released their predictions for the 2022 hurricane season. One thing you can do to protect your family and home is to hurricane-proof your landscape. Here are some tips to help you get started: Right Tree, Right Place - Choose trees that are well-suited for your landscape. Plant larger trees away from your home, power lines, and other structures. This reduces the risk of branches—or trees—falling on your home. It also prevents them from knocking down power lines. Choose Wind-resistant Species - Some trees are more wind-resistant than others. Suggested wind-resistant varieties include sabal, manila, and pygmy date palms. Gumbo limbo, live oak, and sea grape also have high hurricane survival rates. Regular Pruning and Maintenance - Regular pruning has several benefits. It promotes healthy growth and removes dead, dying, or diseased

By Rosemary Eiden

limbs. Assess trees, paying close attention to the branches. Remove limbs that are dying, damaged, or weakly connected to the trunk. Thinning or reducing the crown can reduce trunk movement during a hurricane. You can also prune to reshape the tree. When done correctly, reshaping can make trees more resistant to wind damage. If branches are large or high in the tree, seek help. It’s best to hire a certified arborist to prune. Planting in Groups or Masses - Planting groups of mixed trees together can greatly enhance wind resistance. The trees buffer each other as well as your property and landscape plants. After a hurricane, remember that your landscape needs to be maintained. Damaged trees need to be removed or restored. And be sure to check out our Trees and Hurricanes website. This resource provides detailed information on storm damage prevention and treatment

DEMONSTRATION GARDEN BIRD BATH By Lucille Mineo and Janet Decosmo

The members of the Garden Club are pleased to see that the residents of Del Tura are enjoying the beautiful Florida flora as well as the pathways and benches in the garden. We are in the process of procuring safety lights along the paths. We recently installed a bird bath. This gives our feathered friends clean water to drink and the chance to refresh themselves with a bath. It has recently been brought to our attention that a well-meaning individual has mistaken it for a bird feeder and lined pieces of bread along

the rim. The bread is falling into the water and causing a soggy mess. The birds are not eating the bread, and it’s making the maintenance difficult. We also need to mention that the plants cannot tolerate dog urine. We don’t want to curtail your use of the garden, but please refrain from walking your dog along the paths. Thank you and continue to enjoy this spot of beauty. ~ The Garden Club of Del Tura

GATE GABBER By Michael Johnson So, we’ve traveled back in time together for some stories from my past. Join me again for a trip down memory lane. It’s 1961, I’m in junior high school and not doing well with my studies. I’m more interested in sports, girls, goofing off and generally causing my parents to worry about my future. Throughout my junior high years, I had a friend who was all too ready to join me in my misadventures. We’ll call him Edgar. Later in our relationship we were each other’s Best Men at our respective weddings. But I digress. Edgar and I were involved in some questionable activities together. Not criminal, mind you, just questionable. It got to the point where my parents thought it best to get us separated. Mind you, Edgar was from a different town. A town without a high school or junior high school. He was in the same county and therefore entitled to attend the school I was attending. His parents and my parents did not have any common friends and therefore had no contact with each other. The fact Edgar and I were close friends had no bearing on our parents being involved with one another. Well, my parents reached the point where they thought the best solution was to get me to a private school out of state - a boarding school. One day they packed me up in the family car and told me we were headed up to Connecticut from our home in New York. They had found a private school in Bristol, Connecticut which was small and devoted to helping young boys straighten their lives out. We arrived at the school and headed to the Dean’s office to have my “admission interview.” I was dreading the idea that I was going to be doomed to live out my remaining school life away from friends and familiar surroundings. The interview went well, and it was time to take a tour of the school grounds and buildings. The school was comprised of several buildings, which were private homes at one time. There were about six buildings comprising the compound. The main building was an old stone building which was the home of a wealthy industrialist who sold the building and his clock-making business years before. As the dean accompanied my parents and me through the large building, we found ourselves on the bottom floor which was called the “Rec Room.” There was a TV, some seating, and a place where students could gather and chat, away from teachers and other adults. As we walked through the Rec Room I looked over in the corner and saw...Yes, EDGAR!! His parents, unbeknownst to me, had also decided the best choice for their son was to find a private school for HIM. Well, Edgar saw me, smiled, and faded off into another part of the room, fearing (and, rightly so) if he was discovered the jig would be up and I’d be whisked away. Edgar and I attended this school together for the next three years. Our parents eventually found out about our joint attendance and I suspect had invested time and money enough so they were not going to go through the trouble finding new schools for us. See you next month.

National Dog Day

September 2022

Continued from page 19 Maybe it just seemed so big and so glorious because I was young and inexperienced. Maybe it wasn’t really that “grand,” but I believe that it was. The vastness of that place reminded me of how small I am. It humbled me; gave me some perspective, and I hope someday, after all these years of living, to see it again and know I was right. The second experience is like the first, although separated by almost 45 years. We finally took our “dream vacation,” something we had hoped to do for decades. A Hawaiian cruise! Every part of the trip was wonderful, from hiking to the top of Diamond Head and visiting Pearl Harbor, to the waterfalls of Maui, to attending a traditional Hawaiian luau. Our ship docked in Kauai for a couple of days, and we were able to explore much of the island. It is incredibly beautiful; a genuine tropical paradise. Before we pulled out of port, we were told to find a spot on the starboard side (or was it the port side?) of the ship, or if you were fortunate enough to have a balcony on that side – which we did – find your way there and wait for sail away. We grabbed a couple of cocktails and made our way to our cabin. As the ship left the island it sailed slowly past the Napali coast, and we were treated to the most amazing views of one of the most beautiful places on earth. Cliffs rising out of the sea like giant hands; crevices etched in their sides as if by unseen fingers. Lush and green and verdant. No villages, no roads, no buildings, just forest covered rock, imposing, dignified, formidable. And, as before, when confronted with something this gorgeous, this graceful, this magnificent, I could not breathe. We just sat and looked, and marveled in silence, for there were no words to describe what we saw. We simply took in the scene and marveled at the goodness of a God who would create something so beautiful for such as us to behold. I’m sure there are other places on this earth as stunning as the two described above. Places that leave you different somehow after you’ve been there, and I hope, God willing, someday I’ll see a few of them. But, if not, I’m okay, because from my way of thinking, I’ve been blessed enough for a lifetime.

WHAT IS A GRANDMOTHER? By Lucille Mineo National Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 11. Below are some reflections on what it means to be a grandmother. Thank you, Nancy Davy, for sending this our way and Happy Grandparents Day to all the Grandmas (and Grandpas) here in Del Tura. A grandmother is the mother of a child’s parent who is illustrious, high in power and a principal relation in the eyes of a child. She is the one a child turns to when Mommy and Daddy are too preoccupied with keeping it all together or “just don’t understand.” Grandma is the one with the outstretched arms to be coddled in, and the giver of unlimited kisses. Grandma is there to hear all the cute little things the children say, which are oft-times missed by busy parents. (These are the sayings that identify each child to Grandma and are not only stored in her elephant-like memory, but are brought out years later for everyone’s enjoyment.) Grandma’s home is often special to children because it’s cozy, perhaps less cluttered and acutely quiet. It’s a refuge that exhibits simpler times gone by. There may be a garden, bird

houses, and possibly a picnic table ready in a minute’s notice for lunch or an afternoon snack on a warm summer day. Grandma has the time to take the little ones for an afternoon ice cream cone, a leisurely tour through the toy section of the dollar store and tell a “once upon a time” story without a book. She is happy to plan a picnic in the park, set it out on a blanket in the grass and prepare the little tykes’ favorite foods. She makes sure there are nutritious sandwiches, drinks, and fresh fruit, as well as homemade chocolate chip cookies, made fresh that morning. Grandma makes sure there is a ball for tossing, plenty of bubbles to blow and the trusty red wagon that Grandpa can pull around the park with the youngsters holding on for dear life. Grandmas are the foundation of a family, and it’s her greatest joy to spread her love to her child’s offspring. It’s her pleasure to indulge them in the things Mommy and Daddy are too busy to do. Lucky is the child who lives close enough to Grandma and can bask in her love, adoration and knowledge.
