Choralaires Holiday Concert Ticket Sales Begin November 16th After missing all of 2020 due to the pandemic, the Choralaires are pleased to announce their 2021 Holiday Concert will take place as scheduled on December 4th. Under the direction of Dave Adams and Assistant Director Larry Walimire, this year’s concert promises to be truly special. According to Dave, “We have a wonderful group of singers. After a long layoff, they’ve come together as a family and have been working really hard since the first part of September. They are putting together a concert that will really set the tone for a special holiday season.” The concert is scheduled for Saturday December 4th, and as in the past, there will be performances at both 2pm and 7pm. Tickets for the concert will once again be free, with an opportunity for those in attendance to make a donation at the concert. The first date for ticket distribution will be November 16 th in the Starlight Ballroom from 8-9AM and also from 4-6PM. The first day of distribution will be for HOA members only. Tickets will then be open to everyone on both November 23rd and November 30th in the Starlight Ballroom from 8-9AM and 4-6PM. This is the only planned ticket distribution, so place the dates in your calendar and plan accordingly. They will not be available elsewhere. Important Note: At the request of many who have attended previous concerts, tables and seating will be assigned this year. This will help alleviate the problems many had in the past finding seats as the room filled just prior to the start of the concert. There will be a limit of 8 seats per individual at the time of pick up. Also, please note that on the first day of distribution, there will be a sign up list for the order of distribution placed on a table at 7:30 am by the Choralaires. It will be the ONLY official signup sheet designating the order in which folks may pick up tickets.
For more information, please contact Nancy Adams at 508-284-0919

DEL TURA FRUIT TREE PROJECT – YEAR END REPORT By Sherry Plisch
October 1, 2020 – September 30, 2021 We had 13 amazing volunteers this year, who gave an hour or so, whenever they were called to pick. They picked fruit on 23 days - not all of the volunteers picked each of those 23 days. These volunteer “pickers” helped their neighbors by picking the unwanted fruit. This year they picked a whopping total of 5127 pounds of avocados, lychees, mangoes, oranges, tangerines and carambola (starfruit). The volunteers were: Rick Rudzik, Barry Plisch, Joe Pollock, Maria Soper, Gail Hodge, Larry Hodge, Woody Cook, Patt Glenn, Andree Dearing, Chuck Dearing, Denise Rose, Jane Snyder and myself. After picking the fruit and weighing it, we donate it to the CCMI Café and Soup Kitchen -part of the Harry Chapin Food Bank. We are not only helping to feed the hungry, but are also cleaning up any rotting fruit which helps to keep the vermin away.
And a huge “Thank You” to those 20 Del Tura residents who were willing to have us pick and donate their fruit. You too are amazing! We are looking for more pickers, who would like to join us in this great opportunity to help your fellow man. Call me, Sherry, 239-567-0538.

NINE HOLE WOMEN’S GOLF By Sandy Gove Our weekly roster for 9-hole play includes more and more of our members, and it’s great getting together again. League President, Justine Fitzgibbons, and Tour Chairman/VP, Debby Taylor, have planned a variety of weekly games, spiced with tournaments, luncheons and other social opportunities for a season of fun golf and friendly competition. The new season begins November 3 with a Couples’ Challenge. We will gather in the lower parking lot by 1:30pm with Tee-off at 2:00pm. This event provides a great mixer as we come back together as a group. Dinner will follow allowing us to catch up with friends. Additional information including cost will be posted in the Dungeon on the Nine-Holers’ bulletin board, so be sure to check it out. Checks for our events are payable to DTNHWGA—an abbreviation for Del Tura Nine Hole Women’s Golf Association-shortened thankfully! Checks are dropped off at the Pro Shop. Looking ahead, our Member/Member will take place December 15 and 16, with our festive Holiday Luncheon and General Meeting held on the 16th, so watch for details! As we get into “the swing” of golfing together once again, this might be a good opportunity to brush up on our Golf Etiquette……It’s great to be able to chat with others during play, but the following are helpful hints to keep in mind for a smoother game for everyone:
DO: • Park to the side of the green – not in front of it. • Play “ready golf” to speed up play. • Proceed to the next tee before recording your score. • Use 90-degree rule while driving carts on the fairways. • Carry treated sand to repair divots (available at Hole #1 on each course.) • Choose safety over heroics! PLEASE DON’T: • Move or talk while someone is hitting their ball. • Hit your shots until the group in front of you is well out of range. • Ask another player what club she used, or offer play advice. • Hold up other players. • Scale wooden bunker walls! Our Membership Chair, Kathy Klein, is pleased to report two new members! Welcome Betsy Bartoleggi and Gail Lawrence! Whether you have been away from golf for a time or are new to the sport, our league offers an opportunity to play nine holes while getting some exercise in a beautiful setting with current friends and possibly new ones. Kathy can be reached at (715-927-1163) and will gladly answer any questions you may have. See you on the tee!
THURSDAY NIGHT BINGO By Jack & Janet We are so happy to be able to hold our HOA sponsored Thursday night bingo again and so glad to have our fellow workers from the past helping us run it again after not being able to have it this past year. We are also happy to have the new helpers too because it takes a good crew to run this every Thursday night. Things will remain the same as far as the doors opening at 6:00 to sell game cards from 6:00 to 6:45 and then bingo starting at 7:00. Prices will also remain the same as before. Everyone playing must be 18 or older and only residents and their guests are permitted to play. Everyone must buy a 6-pack to play, and then you can also buy 3-packs, specials and hot-ball with them if you so desire. We are usually done between 9:00 & 9:30 barring any equipment issues.
Please note there will be no bingo on Nov. 4th because of the craft-fair and also on the 25th because it’s Thanksgiving. December dates for no bingo will be in my article in the December Tower. Hoping to see a lot of you there again for some fun and hopefully go back home with more money than what you came with. Remember, the more people who come to play, the bigger the pots will be to win. CREATIVE WRITERS WORKSHOP By Nancy Davy For those of you who like to write, or who may have always dreamed of writing, please consider our group. Our Creative Writers Workshop is beginning its third season, and we’ve love to have you join us! We will be meeting on Mondays (usually twice a month), and, at least initially, will continue to gather by golf cart under the banyan tree, as we can be outdoors and be socially distant. My email address is ndavy01@gmail.com. You will need to provide me with your name, your email address,
and your cell phone number. I will text everyone with a reminder before each meeting, and ask for confirmation of how many will attend so I have enough material. As the Tower deadline for the November issue fell in October before our first gathering, I do not have new material for you to read. But please look next month, when I hope to entertain you with some current responses to new challenges! From all of us – stay safe and well and enjoy the summer! Nancy Davy

WELCOME TO ANOTHER EDITION OF “PICKLEBALL INFO” The stories of how the game was named…
started. The dog was actually named after the game.
Story #1: Joel Prichard’s daughter had picked out a Cockapoo puppy and named it “Pickles”. Once the family and neighbors started playing the new racquet game (later to be called Pickleball), Pickles the dog would take the ball in its mouth and run off the court with it. This is one version of how Pickleball got its name.
Now back to the first time it was played, 1965. The Pritchard’s property had an old badminton court on it so they tried to find some equipment to play but couldn’t find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a large plastic ball with holes. At the beginning of the weekend they had set the net at a height of 60”. As the weekend continued and after many volly’s they realized that the ball bounced very well on the asphalt and lowered the net to 36”. The following weekend, the new “game” was introduced to Barney McCallum and the three men began creating rules, looking heavily at badminton. Creating a game the whole family could play was the original purpose of the game.
Story #2: Joel Prichard’s wife who in the past had been a competitive rower came up with the name because it reminded her of a pickle boat. Why? After a little research it was found that actually people do refer to weaker mismatched crew boat teams as a “pickle boat”. In 2005 Prichard’s daughter confirmed the game was not named after the dog because she didn’t get the dog until years after the game
Goodbye until next month…
Work with life partner to achieve mutual goals
When you and your life partner work together to achieve your important long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement lifestyle, the experience can be greatly rewarding. However, your success will require commitment and discipline. So, what steps should you take along the way? One key move is to decide early in your relationship how you will handle money. Many couples merge their finances and make joint decisions on major purchases. But some couples like to keep at least part of their finances distinct, perhaps by maintaining separate checking or savings accounts. There’s really no one correct solution for everyone, but whatever you decide, you’ll want to be assured that all the bills will be paid and that neither one of you feels the pressure of an unfair financial burden. Here’s another suggestion: Try to avoid keeping financial secrets from your partner. That means disclosing your debts, hidden funds or uncommon investments. These types of surprises can lead to difficulties and mistrust. Even if you’re entering the relationship carrying something like a heavy student loan, it’s best to get it out in the open right away so, together, you can strive to gradually eliminate it. Of course, there’s also a practical side to not keeping secrets. Your large student loan could affect your credit rating – an issue that may arise when you and your partner are seeking a mortgage or some other type of loan. Clearly, you both should be aware of this potential stumbling block before you begin the application process. Now, let’s consider your investments. You each may have your own IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, but you might also share a joint investment account. However, you might not share the same risk tolerance – perhaps one of you tends to be more aggressive, willing to take more risks in exchange for potentially higher returns, while the other is more conservative, preferring to keep down the risk level of a portfolio, even if it means lesser capacity for growth. Again, neither you nor your partner is necessarily “right” or “wrong” in your views on investing – and nobody’s feelings about risk should be ignored. But once you’ve clearly identified your retirement goals and estimated their cost, you may find that compromise is possible. In other words, perhaps the conservative partner will realize that a too-cautious approach could hinder progress toward the desired retirement goal, while the partner who focuses on maximum growth will learn that a somewhat less aggressive approach can still yield the desired results. This type of compromise may affect the investment choices you make in your individual accounts as well as your joint accounts. And the way you choose your investments may even change over time, especially if your financial goals evolve. Ultimately, communication is the key. As long as you’re talking to each other and openly expressing your wishes and concerns, you and your partner can find a way to keep moving toward your mutual goals.

DEL TURE FRUIT GARDEN By Rosemary Eiden There has been a change of plans to the “All Native Garden at Del Tura”. Because the Home Town America corporation won’t allow any permanent structures it was agreed that the design should be reconfigured. The plastic that was put in place for our first stage will now become a fruit garden. The new design features a path down the middle of the 34x34’ space. Four fruit trees: hog plum, fig, guava, and Barbados Cherry will be planted to the right and left of the entrance and exit path. The border edges will be planted with small to medium sized shrubs. The garden club broke ground and began planting on October 7th. We will need pine needles for mulch around the plants. If you have pine needles to get rid of please bring them to the site to add to the existing pile. We will need a fair amount to cover the area. We still plan on holding our 2nd plant sale at the site on February 14th, 2022. More information to come as we get closer to that date. We will be busy raising plants from seed up to that time. If you have any quart or gallon size plastic pots, please call Clair McNair, (508) 344-9920, mcnair. claire@yahoo.com. She will gladly take them from you.

Left to right: Rosemary Eiden, Sue Smith, Sue Larson, Ruth Ann Lugten, Mary Lou Buss, Sandy Gove Fruit: Hog plum is a Florida native. In spring it produces small, fragrant, yellow flowers that turn into yellow, sweet, golf ball sized fruits. Fig is an excellent ornamental and fruit-bearing landscape plant. With a dwarf compact habit, it is smaller and more cold hardy than comparable figs, yet bears large and more prolific fruits spring and fall. Papaya producing bite size fruit for eating fresh off the tree or canning and preserving. The smooth, round shaped fruit is yellow on the exterior with a unique off-white interior flesh. Barbados cherry is a large, bushy shrub or small tree that reaches mature heights of about 12 feet (3.5 m.). Small, pinkish-lavender flowers bloom from spring to fall, and may pop up year round in warmer climates – usually after irrigation or a rainfall followed by red fruits.

AT THE HYDRANT If Dogs Could Talk A common threat to south Florida dogs is poisoning from Bufo marinus, the giant or cane toad. This species of toad produces a pasty yellow- white toxin in the parotid glands, which extend from the head backward over the shoulder region and is released through pinhole openings in the skin. When a dog mouths or bites a Bufo toad the toxin is released and rapidly absorbed across the mucus membranes of the mouth. Symptoms of Bufo poisoning occur suddenly and may include profuse salivation, vocalizing and pawing at the mouth, brick-red gums, incoordination or a stiff gait, difficulty breathing and the intoxication can rapidly progress to seizures and death. The severity of the poisoning depends on the size of the dog and the amount of toxin absorbed into the blood stream. Puppies and small breed dogs such as Dachshunds, Mini-Pins, Jack Russell Terriers and miniature Schnauzers are more seriously affected because they get “more poison per pound” than a large breed dog. Bufo toads are most active in the spring and summer months when it is warm and moist outside. They are also nocturnal, therefore most poisonings occur in the evening, late-night or early-morning hours. Poisonings can happen very quickly and even dogs being leash-walked have been known to grab a toad and be poisoned

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS POISONED BY A BUFO TOAD. Step 1) DO NOT PANIC!!! You need to be able to think clearly and act quickly to help save your pet. Panicking will only keep you from acting properly! Step 2) IMMEDIATELY rinse the dog’s mouth out with a large amount of water using either a hose, kitchen sink sprayer, shower sprayer or water bottle. Rinse the mouth from side to side. DO NOT DROWN THE ANIMAL BY FORCING WATER DOWN ITS THROAT. The toxin is very sticky and may need to be gently rubbed off of the mucus membranes of the mouth. Be very careful so as not to get bit by your pet. Even the gentlest animal may bite if it is scared, in pain or having a seizure. Step 3) Calmly transport the dog to your veterinarian for further care. PLAN AHEAD! Save time in an emergency by preparing now. Keep the phone number of your veterinarian by the telephone. Since most poisonings occur at night CALL FIRST to make sure that the hospital is open, don’t waste time driving to a closed facility. Keep the phone number and address of a nearby emergency clinic near the phone too, in case your regular veterinarian is not available.

There is no specific antidote for Bufo-toxin and treatment consists mainly of supportive care. The toxin can affect the heart causing it to beat in an irregular pattern and hyperthermia (body temperature greater than 105 degrees) may develop from seizuring. Intravenous fluids, cool-water baths and anti-arrhythmic drugs are all used in the treatment of Bufo intoxication. So what can you do to prevent your pet from being poisoned? First of all, learn to recognize what a Bufo toad looks like. Adults can be as large as 6 to 9 inches in length and have brown, or gray-brown warty skin. Younger toads are much smaller but just as dangerous. Bufo toads are ground dwelling animals. Do not confuse them with tree frogs, which have suction-cup feet and may be found crawling up the side of your house. Bufo toads live near water such as ponds, canals and swimming pools. Search your yard in the late evening for them. If you have just moved to a new neighborhood, ask a neighbor if the toads inhabit the area. In addition to eating insects, small animals, snakes and vegetation, Bufo toads are especially fond of pet food. You can avoid attracting toads to your yard by not leaving bowls of dog or cat food down on the ground. If you live in an area inhabited by Bufo toads, you need to be especially careful. Direct supervision while your pet is outside is crucial and may prevent a tragedy. If you have a fenced-in yard you can make it harder for the toads to get through the links by putting chicken-wire fencing along the bottom edge. Keep your tail waggin! Thank you, Del Tura, for putting joy back in our lives. Please email me a picture and story of your dog jfitz818@aol.com PS: All dogs that are registered and approved by HTA and are not aggressive are welcome at the Dog Park.

ATTENTION ALL DEL TURA RESIDENTS... Now that I have your attention, I am pleased to announce that Walgreen’s Drug Store has offered to come to Del Tura to give flu shots to all that want them. Plus they are giving the Pfizer booster everyone who has had the Pfizer vaccine. You must have had your second injection on or before May 7 to be eligible. Just bring your insurance card with you. GOOD TIMERS’ Don’t cry because it’s over, SMILE because it happened…
Well, the Good Timers Women’s club continues to grow. Last month brought in 5 new members bringing us up to 49! Who will be lucky number 50? Our Pot Luck Bingo was a huge success, all the women in attendance decided that we should have another when all the snowbirds return. Our meeting was very productive too… this month is relatively slow… we will have our monthly luncheon and we have the Poinciana room booked on Saturday, the 27th so we can unwind after Thanksgiving and get together to play a few games. December is going to be jam packed… we will be making reservations for the Holly Jolly Christmas play, the date of our Christmas Party is December 6th in the Starlight ballroom, a good majority of the women are ready to get together to go see West Side Story and dine at Applebee’s, we’re very excited about going on the Christmas Light Canal Cruise out of Punta Gorda AND a gambling group of us will be headed to the Immokolee casino on the 15th. Whew! December is a busy month! We also discussed 3 and 4 day bus trips to New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, St. Augustine to mention a few. We’re waiting for January when our club should be full so

everyone can voice their opinions. November’s meeting is Tuesday the 2nd in the Royal Palm room. Doors open at 4:00 which gives us time to meet and mingle with each other and celebrate that month’s birthdays and then the meeting begins at 4:30. I know everything sounds exciting…but you have to be a member to join in on the fun so why wait any longer….come to the meeting, join now, give your $20 and you’ll be set for the Christmas party and to be included in on the planning of upcoming events. You don’t have to “do it all”… you get to pick and choose what interests you. Please bring cash or a check in case you decide to join at the meeting. It will go back to the normal due’s next year which is $30. The Good Timers meet the first Tuesday of every month at 4PM in the Royal Palm Room. I hope to see all you women who want to get out and do things, without your husbands, like go to plays, local fairs, boat rides, restaurants, etc. and enjoy them with a great group of ladies who are soon to become good friends! So, instead of sitting home crying because there’s nothing to do…come join the women and start smiling for all the fun times ahead! For more info please contact Liz Poniatowski at ciociliz@gmail.com or home phone: 239-800-2935.

REFLECTIONS “A Time for Thankfulness, Loving Thoughts, & Unexpected Moments” Being thankful for our daily blessings at our age has become automatic. We realize that we are blessed to welcome another sunrise and look forward to the unfolding of each new day. However, we sometimes take many things for granted and go through the days without actually realizing the many gifts that surround us. November is here to remind us about those gifts and how truly remarkable life really is! It gives us the opportunity to celebrate and remember how thankful we are for those special gifts of love, family, and friendship. Thanksgiving is a few short weeks away and we are beginning to prepare for that special time with family and friends. As we plan for that special dinner we look forward to carrying on many of the traditions of our parents and grandparents as well as the many traditions that we have added through the years. The lace tablecloth with matching napkins, Great Grandma’s silverware, Grandma’s china, Mom’s special turkey platter, Aunt Mabel’s gravy bowl, …I get dizzy thinking about how much energy we put into the preparations for that special day! And we haven’t even started talking about planning the menu yet!! I’m not saying that planning is something we shouldn’t do, or that tradition not be a part of that special day. What I am saying is that I would put less emphasis on matching napkins and silverware and much more emphasis

By Dianne J. Roderick on spending more time on conversation and laughter with the ones we love while we can. So much of our special times with family and friends are over shadowed with stringent details. Do we have to wash the dishes right after the meal? Can’t we wait at least until after dessert, or maybe after another glass of wine…Just saying. Fanny Fern, an American novelist in the mid 1850’s once wrote the following quote. “The cream of enjoyment in this life is always impromptu. The chance walk; the unexpected visit; the unsought conversation or acquaintance.” For some reason this quote has stayed with me throughout the years. For, I feel, it is in the unplanned moments of life that we experience the most joy. It is true that when we plan special gatherings and honor past traditions, as we do on Thanksgiving, we somehow tend to get caught up with all the little details, but the memories of those special times are never planned. What makes those times heartfelt and memorable are the impromptu moments within those precious hours that we spend with the people that we love. Thanksgiving gives each of us the opportunity to come together, reflect and give thanks for all of life’s blessings. Give yourself the time for those “unsought conversations”, “chance walks” and “impromptu visits”. Focus on the gifts that are there for you each day and give yourself time to experience the love and unexpected beauty that surrounds you with each sunrise and sunset.
Happy Blessed Thanksgiving Everyone!
