APPRECIATION WEEKEND
GRAND MARSHALLS T
LLOYD AND CAROLYN KELSEY
he wonderful people and “The Magic” of Tara Woods made it an easy decision for Lloyd and I to buy in July of 2000. We joined the Tara Woods family in May of 2001 full-time. We wanted to get involved with the activities, and Carolyn started classes with Sweating to the Oldies and country line dancing. We were able to meet new people and make friends forever.
Lloyd volunteered to play music for a fundraiser towards the traffic light in 2001. We are K-Sound. To our surprise it turned out we needed to advertise, print and sell tickets, purchase drinks and refreshments, decorate, play the music and clean up! Everyone who runs an event at the Clubhouse understands what we are saying! It was Great Fun! We got to meet so many nice people willing to help. It was a success and we all enjoy and feel safer having the traffic light. Over $600.00 profit was earned. For many summers we would also play Free Fun Dances! We also deliver the Columns and Telephone Directories which gives us a chance to meet neighbors. We find being on the Hurricane Committee is very interesting. We’ve had to use our skills a few times, and we truly appreciate the many professional nurses who help with our special needs neighbors! Another thing we do is work at the cast parties, which gives us a chance to meet and work with different people, and it’s always FUN!
We have it all!!! Feel “The Magic” as we have – get involved. Lloyd and Carolyn Kelsey
Lloyd works with the Sound and Light Committee. He also serves on the Park Improvement Committee and Fire Wise Committee. We both took the Medical Reserve Corp. Training to help here in Tara Woods. We are so grateful that we got involved with different activities. It has given us the opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy the company of our long-time friends. It has been Priceless! We’re very fortunate that our two sons, Kevin and Keith, and our daughter Kathy moved down to Florida the same time we did.

From the President Now that the Christmas decorations are packed away for another year, we’re off and running into the New Year. Just reading all the events advertised in this issue of The Columns will wear you out. A heads up for March: it only gets busier! Unless you’re like me and involved in almost everything going on in some way, pace yourself and enjoy doing as much as you can. Tara Woods is a beautiful place to be busy or not. The Annual Meeting is behind us and the Board is regrouping for the next year. Thank you to all the members who attended the meeting and exercised their right to vote. We are pleased to welcome Nancy Wuebbeler as a new Director. I know she will be an asset to the Board and will do a wonderful job representing the community. I was very pleased and relieved to have Marie Ivens accept the nomination from the floor as Recording Secretary. As the only nominee, she was elected along with Celeste Perre and Paul Montelaro who were running unopposed. I look forward
to working with Marie and the Board welcomes her wholeheartedly as a new member. Thank you to Fred Puhlfuerst for running the elections and to Tony Montelaro for serving as Parliamentarian pro-tem. We’re still in need of a permanent Parliamentarian for this year and also a Nominating Committee Chairperson to relieve Celeste of the responsibilities of that position while she’s very heavily involved with her duties as Membership Secretary. Talk to Celeste if you are interested. It seems like we are always asking for volunteers, but that’s what it takes to run an organization like the TWHA and all the peripheral groups related to it. We are still seeking an Activities Director. This does not have to be an overwhelming job if you have a good committee behind you. Please talk to Frank Millette, the Board liaison for Activities, if you would like to know more about what this job entails. You may have the gifts and talents to fill this position without knowing it.
With the success of our first Trivia Night held last February, the Board is hosting another one on Friday, February 13th. This is a fun evening to test your knowledge and maybe win some prizes. These are professional games developed by Global Interactive Events, and brought to us courtesy of resident, Dave Redgers of Canada. You may have played it if you frequent any of the numerous bars and restaurants who offer this entertainment. Tickets of $5.00/person are available at Coffee and Bingo. The idea is to get a “team table” together – of at least 4-6 of your smartest friends – submit the table reservation form when purchasing your tickets, BYOB and table snacks and have a fun time. I hope we’ll see you there and at many of the numerous events available this month.

couple of possibilities. Their request was granted. The new theme for the next parade will be “Fairy Tales”. The fun-filled weekend is made possible by all the caring volunteers within our community and the generosity of Hometown America. It takes an army of volunteers who give much of their time and energy to make it all happen. And Hometown continues a tradition started by others many years ago by financing the entire weekend. They are all to be commended for everything they do, though it often goes unappreciated. For those of you who have not yet experienced Apprecia-

From the Editor: For those who are new to Tara Woods and are not familiar with Resident Appreciation Weekend, we are reprinting this article. Hope you will enjoy the event as much as we who help to make it all happen. The annual Resident Appreciation Weekend for 2015 will be on Friday and Saturday, February 27th and 28th. It was announced at the April homeowner’s meeting that the theme for the parade would be “Outer Space” and the Grand Marshal would be chosen in the fall. Several groups jointly submitted a written request to the steering committee for a theme change and suggested a

with many $5.00 prizes. A big part of the fun is collecting tickets for chances to win prizes every time you participate in an amenities game (or for each hour you work during the weekend). You might even be a daily winner of any of the games for your gender! Friday’s final activity around 3:30 PM is for partners who want to enter the egg toss, immediately followed by the water balloon toss. Saturday morning’s parade around the lake at 10:00 AM is a showcase of creativity by the groups and individuals displaying decorated golf carts, costumes and other “Fairy Tale” themed ideas. A Grand Marshal will lead the parade. Six substantial money prizes are awarded

for 1st, 2nd and 3rd each for the best groups and for the best individuals. The winners are chosen by judges from outside the park. There are also other marching units that complete the parade. The weekend festivities conclude Saturday night at 7:00 PM with a dance and awards ceremony. Prizes for the parade winners and game winners are awarded. Then there are random drawings for prizes from all the tickets given for participating and volunteering. The activities for the weekend have been the same for many years and some feel it is time for a change. Others like the agenda the way it is. The steering committee is open to any comments and sugges-
tions, including nominations for parade themes, grand marshals, committee members and changes in the activities. However, any changes you want to make to the games should include your new replacement game plan. All comments and suggestions will be discussed and considered at the committee meetings. A list of members will be posted on the bulletin board. Whether this is your first Appreciation Weekend or your fifteenth, everyone can get involved to help make the weekend fun. How much fun you allow yourself to have is entirely up to you!! Polly Brown

Included in the total were contributions from Tara Woods residents amounting to $3,066. Give yourselves a BIG HAND for your continuous outstanding generosity and support. Donations of $4,250 were delivered to each of the four CHARITIES for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. For the benefit of our new residents, I have listed the four communities who took part in the Day of Caring Fund Drive, as well as the four charities receiving the dona-
tions. The four communities were: TARA WOODS, PINE LAKES, LAKE FAIRWAYS, and HERITAGE. The four charities were: FORT MYERS SOUP KITCHEN, HISPANIC SERVICES OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES, FORT MYERS RESCUE MISSION, and THE SALVATION ARMY. “Thank you” again Tara Woods residents for another great year where we were fortunate to be able to help feed needy families during the Holidays. Our team played well, but the other team, Heritage, played better. We are getting it together as a team and I am sure we will be on
the winning side soon. I would like to thank Mike Burk for taking photos at the game. After a very short term as Manager of the Tara Woods Magic softball team, I am saddened to say I will be leaving the team as their manager for personal reasons. A new manager will be chosen by the team. I would like to thank the team and the fans for their support. Tony Perre, Manager

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to ‘clean up’ the bird’s vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and
screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John’s outstretched arms and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.” John was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, “May I ask what the turkey did?”

ACTIVITIES Well, this is my last article for Activities. I hope all who attended the New Year’s Eve House Party had a good time. We certainly had a lot of great dances, “cutting the rug” as the saying goes! At this time I would like to thank everyone who has pitched in to help at all of the parties and my committee: Julie and Gerald Wehrung, Jackie and Jim Liberty, Angie and George D’Alessandro, Evelyn and Paul Loud, Barbara Goodhue, Polly Brown and a very
special thanks to Bea Sponseller who has been coming up with decorations for parties for as long as I have lived here and, of course, to Gary her helper. I want to wish the next Activities Chairperson a lot of luck, and if you have a committee like I had, it will be a piece of cake! Past Activities Chairperson Linda McKay

TESTIMONIAL: Loretta - Tara Woods on her Replacement: “It was late on a Thursday evening and I needed help with my “old” air conditioner. Pete called Custom Cooling for me and a rep said he would come to check it Friday morning. After a long check-up, he asked me to come outside so he could show me and explain the problem. We talked and he recommended a new unit was the only hope to cool the house. Size of unit and cost was given to me. He answered my questions and returned at 12:00 PM on the same day to install the new unit. How wonderful it was to see two trucks and at least three men busy getting the job done. They cleaned up; again showed me unit and how everything worked. My house was without air maybe 2 hours. Great Job! Thank you.” 5/15

“The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell; it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell.” Having just experienced the Christmas holidays, we have been reminded once again that God loves us so much that he sent his Son to die for our sins. February is love month, and our program this month will celebrate the love of God. Linda Clegg will be sharing a monologue about Ruth. Ruth was the young Moabite woman who left her country and her people to care for her widowed mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth became one of the few women listed in the lineage of Jesus Christ. Louise Frederick will bless us with singing “The Love of God” and “O How He Loves You and Me”. Our meeting is Monday, February 16th at 12:00 Noon in the Clubhouse Living Room. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. All ladies are invited. Thanks to all the ladies who baked and delivered cookies and gifts to our shut-ins, and to the ladies and their husbands who joined us in caroling. You were all a Christmas blessing. We are now collecting names of our military men and women to receive care boxes. Please turn in the names of your loved ones soon to Beth Ferris or Barbara Miller. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” Lamentations 3:22

What Does 2015 Hold in Store for Investors? If you’re an investor, you probably had a pretty good year in 2014. But what’s in store for 2015? It’s essentially impossible to make precise predictions about the performance of the financial markets — but it is possible to identify those economic conditions and market forces that may help shape outcomes in the investment world for 2015. By paying close attention to these conditions and forces, you can gain some valuable insights as to what investment moves might make sense for you.
Here are a few of these moves:
• Consider adding stocks. With stock prices having climbed higher and higher for more than five years, you might be wondering if it’s time to scale back on your ownership of equities. After all, no “bull” market lasts forever. Still, some factors point to continued strength for stocks over the long term. First, we are seeing signs of improving economic growth; employment gains and low oil prices are giving consumers more confidence, leading to a boost in spending. Second, corporate earnings — a key driver of stock prices — were quite strong in the second half of 2014, and companies appear poised to show more good results in 2015. Third, stocks — at least large-company stocks — are still reasonably valued, as measured by their price-toearnings ratios (P/E). Given these factors, you might want to think about adding quality stocks to your holdings — assuming, of course, these stocks can help meet your needs for a balanced portfolio. And be aware that even the most favorable conditions can’t assure a continued run-up in stock prices, which can and will fluctuate.
• Prepare for rising interest rates. For several years, interest rates have been at, or near, historical lows. Given the strengthening economy, and the decreased need for stimulus, the Federal Reserve may well raise short-term interest rates in 2015, perhaps as early as this summer. But long-term rates may start rising even before then, so you may want to take a close look at your bonds and other fixed-rate investments. As you probably know, when interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds typically falls because investors won’t pay full price for your bonds when they can get newly issued ones that pay higher rates. One way to combat the effects of rising rates is to build a “ladder” consisting of short-, intermediate- and long-term bonds. With such a ladder, you’ll be able to redeem your maturing short-term bonds and reinvest them in the new, higher-paying bonds.
• Look for investment opportunities abroad. Although economic growth has been slow in parts of the world, especially China, many countries have now initiated policies to spur economic growth. These actions can create opportunities for international equity investments. Keep in mind, though, that international investing involves particular risks, such as currency fluctuations and political and economic instability. So if you are considering foreign investments, you may want to consult with a financial professional.
There are no guarantees, but by following the above suggestions, you may be able to take advantage of what looks to be a fairly favorable investment environment for 2015. While you should make most of your investment decisions based on long-term considerations, it’s always a good idea to be attuned to what’s happening in the world around you — and to respond appropriately. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING The Tennis Association held its first meeting of the new year on Sunday, January 25th. At that meeting, a Nominating Committee for the 2015-2016 tennis season was appointed. This Committee will submit names of candidates for the offices of the Tennis Association which will be voted on at the March meeting. The next meeting of the Tennis Association is set for Sunday, February 22nd, at 5:45 PM. ROUND ROBIN The second Round Robin of the season was held on Sunday, January 25th. Because of the early deadline for the Columns, the number of people who participated cannot be reported at this time. The next Round Robin is scheduled for Sunday, February 22nd. The sign-up sheet will be posted by February 1st, so be sure to sign up to play that day. Again, because of the early deadline for the Columns, it is not known who will be hosting the dinner and the courtside snacks for that February Round Robin. APPRECIATION WEEKEND Appreciation Weekend is scheduled for February 27-28th. We will have the same three games that we had last year. There will be the “Hole in the Board” game, the “Bowling” tennis game, and the “Hit the Chairs” game. You do not have to be a tennis player to enjoy these games. They are a lot of fun to play! We need workers to help run these games, so please consider giving us a hand. We are asking for only one hour of your time. So, if you’re asked to help out, please say “Yes”. Workers get extra tickets for a chance at prizes at Saturday night’s festivities. Workers are also invited to the pizza party in March. TENNIS LEAGUES Women’s League The first half of the Women’s SWIFT League ended with the matches on Thursday, January
NEW
8th. After seven weeks of tennis competition, the two Tara Woods teams are still in first and second place. The Tara Woods Angels are in first place, with 38 wins and only 4 losses. The Tara Woods Jewels are in second place with 33 wins and 9 losses. Congratulations are in order for both teams on this impressive record. It is great to see both Tara Woods teams leading the league. – Linda Engel Men’s League Red League The Red Team did very well on January 7th, winning 5 out of 6 matches. We are presently in third place (much better than last year). – Glen Fisher White League The Tara Woods White Team split their first match of 2015 against the Admirals 3 for 3. We are just short of batting 500 and are tied for fourth place out of eight teams. Please continue to support us each Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 PM. There is no charge for any of the games. Last month I suggested we sell popcorn, but that did not go over very well, so this month here is what we can do. We will have a 50/50 draw to offset our growing expenses of travel and tennis balls, but most of all for the beer and snacks. – Gerry Gagnon

I hope everyone has begun to collect items for our annual Trash and Treasure event. Please remember, items must not be damaged and electrical items must be in working order.
Mark your calendars. Trash and Treasure Saturday, March 7th Selling starts at 9:30 AM until 1:00 PM. At the January meeting, we discussed needing volunteers for this event. If you are interested in helping, we set up from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Friday, March 6th. Bring your lunch; the Club will supply cookies and water. Ladies, please ask your man if he can help. Men are needed to
help with setting up tables on Friday, March 6th at 9:00 AM and to check out electrical devices. They are also needed to help the next day, Saturday, March 7th at 1:00 PM to pack up any leftover items. Our next meeting is Saturday, February 14th. This is an important meeting. We will be finalizing our plans on what we need to do for this event. Success of this event depends on volunteers to come and help out (or call me, 543-7755, if you cannot attend the meeting). Please let me know what you will do. Are you on Facebook? Please contact your friends to come and bring their friends to Trash and Treasure. We heard this is a very good way to get more people to the event.
Unfortunately, very few people paid last year’s dues (2014). Usually, we collect dues at the annual April luncheon. Dues are used for various events planned during the year, i.e.: Fashion Show, Butterfly Garden, etc. At the January meeting, we voted to collect the 2015 dues during the month of February. Dues will be collected at Saturday’s Coffee and Tuesday night Bingo. Dues are $5.00. Put your money in an envelope; write your name and telephone number on the outside of the envelope. Please identify a phone number where you can be reached all year long. Give the envelope to the ladies collecting at Coffee and Bingo. If you are new to the community or are not a member, PLEASE JOIN. FYI: This year we will be doing
work on the Butterfly Garden. The bushes have overgrown all the pretty plants that the butterflies need. We can look forward to a more beautiful garden in the near future. The Garden Club Luncheon will be held on Friday, April 10th. Please mark your calendars. We always have a good time. Place and time to follow. Sign-up sheet will be posted in the Clubhouse starting March 10th. We will be going to the Riverland Nursery on Saturday, April 18th at 9:30 AM after Coffee. We will car pool and leave from the Clubhouse. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the Clubhouse starting March 18th; lunch information to follow. Rachelle Dellarocca
February 2015 – Florida Gardening Calendar What to Plant Bedding Plants: Good performers in South Florida’s mild winter include impatiens, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Divide large crowded clumps. Provide adequate water to establish. Some to try are Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Ground Covers: Consider replacing areas of grass with drought tolerant, low maintenance ground covers. Vegetables: Begin planting warm season crops this month. Sweet potato, cantaloupe, eggplant and squash can be started while temperatures are cool.
What to Do Lawns: Fertilize lawns this month. Choose one (not a weed & feed) with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. Prune Roses: Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin eight to nine weeks after pruning. Fertilize Shrubs and Palms: Spread fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer
of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Hold off pruning colddamaged branches until new growth starts. Lawn Weeds: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer (not a weed and feed) to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4-5 days. Timing is important for good control. Spray: When avocados and mango have lost 2/3 of blossoms, spray copper fungicide to control anthracnose. Fruits: If not done in January, fertilize fruit trees including citrus now.

If you are, just mention them to any of our cast members when you see them around Tara Woods. But don’t be surprised if they in turn ask you if you are coming to see their play. We are excited about this year’s production as we have done our part. We found the appropriate costumes, applied makeup to enhance facial features, the actors remembered their blocking while learning their lines. However, this year can only be a success if you do your

part and purchase a ticket and then join us in the Clubhouse on March 13th or 14th, 2015. The tickets will be on sale at $7.00 a ticket (a great price for great entertainment) starting on February 14th at Coffee. They will be on sale at Saturday morning’s Coffee, before Bingo on Tuesday nights, and also at the door on the nights of the performances. The doors open at 6:30 PM, show starts at 7:00 PM. The first row will be reserved for those of you who need to be closer to the stage (but there are no bad seats). Again, I will remind you of our policy regarding no food or drink in the Clubhouse for these two productions, and we thank you for following this policy. Our ushers will be most happy to help anyone to their seats if need be, so ask them, but please no tipping.

TARA WOODS TARA WOODS CRUISE NIGHT CRUISE NIGHT
The idea came from Windmill Village in Punta Gorda as their whole park is highly decorated every Christmas. The lights are beautiful as well as all the snowmen, dolphins, elves, nutcracker, etc. fastened to the palm trees. These are made of felt material by Jack Boylan and Nete Godfrey who wish Tara Woods homeowners would decorate like other parks.

George and Janet Daly and Mary Ellen and Jon Gold enjoyed each other’s company and a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at the beach. The full Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings was prepared the day before and placed in steamer trays. We drove to the North Jetty beach in Venice on Thanksgiving Day with our carefully packed dinner. We found an ideal spot in the picnic area with a beautiful view of the Gulf. After spending time sitting on the beach to enjoy the sunshine and surf, it was time to light a fire in the barbeque grill, located right at our picnic spot, to heat the dinner. We had shrimp cocktail for appetizers and popped a bottle of champagne to toast our wonderful day. The weather was great even though there was a strong breeze coming from the northwest. Our spot was protected by beach growth to our west and the sun was warm and inviting. After dinner, we popped another bottle of champagne to toast the gorgeous sunset on the Gulf of Mexico. Over the many years of our friendship, the
Daly’s and Gold’s have shared many meals in a variety of unusual places – like the candlelight dinner on the walkway underpass at a Fire Island beach in New York. We will add this Florida style Thanksgiving Dinner to our list of memorable dinners together and maybe next year others would like to join us.
