Housing as Urban Theatre Study Abroad Studio Site: Florence, Italy Studio: Ted Brown

Set in piazzale Michelangelo, south of the Arno River. The project consisted of re-imagining the piazza as a theatre, with the city serving as the stage. The Greek and Roman Amphitheater were utilized as precedents to reorganize piazzale Michelangelo into a hybrid between public space and housing. The project accommodates space for setting up shops as well as incorporating new micro housing. A smaller amphitheater located at the old porta is also incorporated into the project. The Panoramic view of the city center was also crucial to the design and spatial experience.

work and images produce in collaboration with Joel Guerrero The goal of this project was to design a new office tower for an energy company in downtown Syracuse. As a comprehensive studio project, the level of technical development for this project is higher than that of previous projects. The parti of the building is that of a large tower piercing through a plinth. The tower is meant to be read as a smooth crystalline form which contrasts the solidity and opaqueness of the plinth. A sort of peg in the hole. Apart from office space, the program also includes retail space, a dance studio and a restaurant. At an urban scale, the project hopes to create an axial concourse through the project at the ground level, emphasizing contextual cues and creating figural spatial relationships.

form through folding Site: Syracuse, NY Studio: Ramona Albert

The goal of the project was to derive form by folding the surface area of the site. The program was a new waiting area for the regional transport center in Syracuse. My goal was to try and use 50% of the site’s surface are in order to minimize the building footprint. The strategy consisted of dividing the site into longitudinal strips and folding them orthogonally in order to articulate spaces within the building, with hopes of creating an iconic form which alludes to the fast movement of speeding trains.

married student housing Housing Studio Site: Rochester, NY Studio: Bruce Coleman

The Project consisted of designing apartment units (with emphasis on married students) of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The goal was to create a design which contributed to the urban fabric of the city. A central courtyard acts as the new semi-public space. The first two stories of the building contain public and semi-public program while the apartment units themselves are located above. Each apartment has a balcony with a courtyard view, contributing to a sense of communal space

This project is highly speculative in nature. The intention was to create an addition to an existing building which could be read as an autonomous entity yet still feel as if it were part of the original building. The end result was a withdrawn monolith which is both iconic in nature yet in a sense does not attempt to draw attention from an external view. As part of the studio, texture or patter was to be derived from the figure and projected back onto itself in order to generate tectonic manipulations. These manipulations are translated as apertures, structure, and other spatial articulations within the figure.
