DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, MPH Pediatrician and Director, MSU-Hurley Children's Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative Citation by
Reena Karani, MD, MHPE Director, Institute for Medical Education Professor, Department of Medical Education Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha. You are a pediatrician, scientist, activist, and author, and your unwavering commitment to your patients helped to uncover the Flint, Michigan water crisis. Your courageous testimony three times before the United States Congress led to exposure of an environmental and health injustice scandal and, today, to a historic cleanup of water systems in Flint. You are now leading recovery efforts for patients and families impacted by the crisis. You are founder and director of the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative, an innovative and model public health program that works with the community to address the population-wide lead exposure and mitigate its impact, advocate for families affected, serve as a national resource for best practices, and help all Flint children grow up healthy and strong. You earned your bachelor’s degree and Master of Public Health degree, with concentrations in environmental health and health policy, from the University of Michigan; your medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine; and you completed your residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, where you were chief resident. You are the Charles Stewart Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health and an associate professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Your work has been recognized globally and you are the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Freedom of Expression Courage Award by PEN America and the 2020 Fries Prize for Improving Health. You were named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” and recognized as one of USA Today’s “Women of the Century” for your roles in uncovering the Flint water crisis and leading recovery efforts. A frequent contributor to national media outlets, including the New York Times and Washington Post, you have appeared on CNN, MSNBC, BBC, and countless other outlets championing the cause of children in Flint and beyond. You are the founding donor of the Flint Child Health and Development Fund (flintkids.org) and author of the widely acclaimed and bestselling book, What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City. A COVID-19 survivor, you have also donated your convalescent plasma several times while continuing to advocate for racial equity in health. 6
Dr. Hanna-Attisha, your intrepid and heroic voice, speaking on behalf of the children and families you care for, shines a light on the ways in which systemic racism devastates the health of the most vulnerable members of our communities and forced a historic reckoning that will help to ensure that a crisis like Flint’s never happens again. For your life-saving work and courageous caregiving, it is a privilege to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOMEDICAL DATA SCIENCE The Master of Science in Biomedical Data Science (MSBDS) program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai integrates training and education in various aspects of biomedical sciences with machine learning, computer systems, and big data analysis, as well as access to large electronic medical record-linked biomedical repositories. Housed within the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, our Program offers a unique opportunity for students with a strong quantitative background to hone the skills necessary to enrich—and ultimately to lead—the biomedical workforce of tomorrow.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOSTATISTICS The Master of Science in Biostatistics program is designed to prepare students with strong backgrounds in mathematics for careers as data analysts and applied biostatisticians in the biomedical and translational sciences. The program is directed at students whose goal is to work as a biostatistician in a clinical, research, or industry setting; or as a stepping-stone to pursue a PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or Bioinformatics. The curriculum emphasizes strong quantitative training, critical thinking skills, and practical strategies for addressing complex challenges of novel, clinical and translational research. Equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of both statistical theory and biomedical applications, graduates of the Master in Biostatistics Program are in high demand for roles in various settings including academic medical centers, the pharmaceutical industry, and the government sector in agencies such as Departments of Health, FDA, NIH, and CDC.

MASTER OF HEALTH ADMINISTR ATION The Master of Health Administration (MHA) was launched in January 2020 and is designed to create a new class of well-prepared administrators to drive systemic change, innovation, and improved value in health care delivery systems. Recognizing that the skills to implement innovation are just as necessary as the ones for envisioning new strategies, the program forges health care administrators who are adept at managing and leading change in a highly uncertain environment. Our students master courses in population health, finance, operations, policy, information technology innovation, and quality assurance, to name a few.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH CARE DELIVERY LEADERSHIP The Master of Science in Health Care Delivery Leadership program provides experienced health care professionals with an unrivaled executive degree program where students learn from senior experts at the front lines of health care delivery innovation. Offered by the Department of Population Health Science and Policy in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the program uses a combination of seminars, online classes, and applied projects to prepare participants to immediately implement what they have learned. The Master of Science in Health Care Delivery Leadership further develops health care professionals to expand their leadership profile, drive needed change, solve complex problems, and create dynamic new approaches that improve the quality, value, and cost of patient care.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN GENETIC COUNSELING The Master of Science in Genetic Counseling is a two-year, full-time course of study designed to train future genetic counselors. Genetic counselors help people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic and genomic contributions to disease. Genetic counseling students complete coursework in basic and clinical sciences, medical genetics and genomics, genetic counseling, and bioethics. Supported by the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics within the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences, our students gain hands-on experience working with patients to understand the impact of genetics and genomics in medicine. Additionally, each student completes a thesis to develop the critical thinking and clinical research skills required to academically contribute to the profession. The integration of the academic and clinical disciplines within the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Icahn School of Medicine, and the Mount Sinai Health System provides our students unparalleled opportunities for didactic and clinical experiences to develop the medical, scientific, and psychosocial skills necessary to practice in this challenging and exciting field. Our graduates are uniquely qualified and highly recruited professionals in one of the fastest growing areas in healthcare. The Genetic Counseling Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling and our graduates are eligible to sit for the American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification examination.

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH The Graduate Program in Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is dedicated to improving the health of communities and individuals. The Program is based on the following core values: community, sound science, diversity, social justice, and engagement. The Program’s mission is to educate our students to prevent disease, protect the environment, and promote good health in partnership with the populations they serve. Through interdisciplinary research and innovation, policy analysis, and advocacy, our students and graduates translate knowledge into practice to serve local, national, and global communities. Training takes place within the largest health care system in New York City, located at the intersection of East Harlem and the Upper East Side—the border between underserved and highly affluent neighborhoods. This geography and the diverse patient population Mount Sinai serves brings into stark relief the health disparities that exist not only in our own community but throughout the world, and frames our students’ educational, practical, and research experience. MPH graduates pursue careers in a wide variety of settings including academic research institutions, community- based organizations, health departments, international NGOs, industry, and the domestic non-profit sector.
