Our Vision The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM), the UK’s professional body for musicians, was set up in 1882 to promote the art of music and support those working as musicians. Those principles still hold fast today. We champion the importance of music and protect the rights of those working within music through a range of top quality services, support and practical advice. We support musicians working in all sectors of the profession.

‘The promotion of the art of music, and the maintenance of the honour and interests of the music profession.’ The ISM’s membership of approximately 7,000 includes performers, composers, private and classroom music teachers, music therapists, academics, advisors, music managers, administrators and music students. Our corporate members include music organisations, professional membership bodies, music exam boards, music retailers and manufacturers, music hubs and services, universities, schools and all of the UK conservatoires. We have always been a wholly independent, not-for-profit organisation. We actively lobby Government on behalf of our members to create a united voice for music. We listen to our members, to the music industry, and to the arts and education sectors in order to develop full informed and effective campaigns.

Our experienced in-house team know the music world as well as the law – the perfect combination to help you. In 2013 the ISM’s in-house legal team, backed by our legal expenses insurers, assisted ISM members in recovering over £150,000.

You can call the helpline for: • i mmediate telephone advice about legal matters relating to your work • l egal issues not related to your work as a musician (e.g. property disputes, matrimonial matters, making a will)

• c ontractual claims relating to your work (including unpaid fees or royalties) • personal injury claims • r oad accidents where your loss is not covered by insurance • d efending criminal prosecutions made against you which are connected with your work • identity theft • an aspect or full enquiry by HMRC into your tax affairs • an HMRC compliance check visit, or a dispute following an HMRC compliance check

Business support Insurances ISM members enjoy a number of vital insurances as an automatic benefit of their membership. They are covered at no additional cost for public liability, legal expenses, HMRC investigations and employer’s liability. We have also negotiated favourable rates for ISM members for musical instrument insurance and professional indemnity insurance. You can find more information in the members’ area of our website.

Tax and accountancy support Our insurance covers ISM members for accountancy costs relating to an HMRC inquiry or compliance check into their tax affairs. Our tax helpline is open 24 hours a day for your tax queries. Accountants LB Group offer members a tax return completion service at a low flat rate of £125 plus VAT as well as a 10% discount on a range of other accountancy and personal financial services. You can find out more on our website.

Fees information and recommendations We commission a range of surveys of fees musicians have been paid for various types of work. You may find these a useful guide to what the going market rates for different types of work have been in the recent past. We also recommend rates for employed musicians teaching in schools as well as employed church organists. (Competition law prevents us from

recommending rates for self-employed work.) You can find our survey results and recommendations on our website. Our website also has a list of tips in setting your tuition fees. For further information about fees, contact our Business Support Officer, Caroline Aldred, at caroline.aldred@ism.org or on 020 7313 9310.

Template documents for contracts and record-keeping Our website contains template documents for members to use in their work. A number are template contracts for working in a variety of situations, eg teaching, one-off performances and working as a church organist. In addition, we have designed templates to help members in their business record-keeping. Effective record-keeping is essential to ensure you are paid all fees due to you. Our templates can help you to keep track of fee payments. They can also enable you to complete your tax return quickly and efficiently by helping you to keep a comprehensive record of all tax-allowable expenses as well as fees received.

Online business advice Our website contains a range of useful information about tax issues, such as a list of tax-allowable expenses which musicians can claim and a link to a microsite designed by HMRC specifically for musicians. The ‘advice and documents’ area of our website also contains useful information on the business aspects of your career, such as advice on the right business structure for you and on engaging other musicians.

‘I wanted to thank you and the team for your help with my unpaid fees. I am amazed by the service the ISM gave.’ ISM member

of composers don’t think they’re paid enough by collecting societies...

Whether playing in a venue or recording with a producer, musicians were putting themselves at risk by working without a written contract. Many ISM members who consulted the ISM legal team did so because of a contractual issue. So written contracts can really ease the stress of working as a musician. Previous campaign successes have included our support for the Live Music Act 2012 which saw live music regulation lifted across England and Wales, making it easier to put on live music events.

{

...so in response PRS for Music appointed a dedicated Classical Account Manager!

Composer’s rights and making our voice heard Our work with our composer members continued to flourish over the last year, with our respected Composer Round Table meetings, led by the Composer Special Interest Group, opening up a dialogue with Sound And Music (SAM) over the British Music Collection (BMC) and the Music Publishers Association (MPA) over fair contracts. We have been working closely with PRS to improve communication with ISM members and composers generally.

Recent successes for music education include: • stopping the English Baccalaureate becoming compulsory • winning £18m additional funding for music education hubs in England • persuading the Government to drop its policy which would have made it more difficult for local authorities to fund music services.

Above: Westcombe Brass and Nina Swann (Live Music Now) hand their Protect Music Education consultation responses to the DfE

Representing music educators The ISM is the subject association for music educators. Whether you are a classroom teacher, peripatetic music teacher, visiting music teacher or educator in any role, you should take full advantage of our campaigns, resources and work. We founded and continue to lead the protectmusiceducation.org campaign which saw 130+ music industry and education bodies work together to persuade the Government to do more to support music education.

Having worked (successfully) to keep music in the National Curriculum we worked in partnership with Dr Alison Daubney (University of Sussex) and Professor Martin Fautley (Birmingham City University) to produce an assessment and progression framework – and training – for classroom teachers which is available at www.ism.org/nationalcurriculum.

Getting involved All of this campaigning is guided by our Educators Special Interest Group, Composers Special Interest Group, Performers Special Interest Group and networks of campaigning musicians. Are you interested in getting more involved in our campaigns activity? Are there any issues you think we should know about? Then get in touch with your Head of External Affairs, Henry Vann, at henry.vann@ism. org or by phoning 020 7313 9327.

Leaving a gift to your Society will help us continue our strong support of the music profession You’ve shared with us the importance of many of our services and support, from our dedicated and specialist legal guidance that helps members through choppy waters, to the advice and professional development that helps members to reach their full potential as professional musicians. We constantly strive to offer the very best and support our members as much as possible, and we thank all our members who have given us wonderful feedback regarding how our services have helped to make a difference to their lives. We know that in this modern age, the support for your profession is even more vital than ever before. Cuts to funding across the music sector including orchestras, higher education or schools and the continued exploitation of musicians’ rights without proper remuneration are just some of the issues we tackle on behalf of members. We are also continuing to develop the support and guidance we provide to musicians so that you get the advice you need through every step of your career. Please help us to continue to do more to safeguard professional musicians by leaving a gift to your Society. You can find out more at ism.org/giving or call Natalia on 020 7313 9318. Thank you.

All you need is a computer and an internet connection. Webinars are interactive and give members the opportunity to ask our experts questions and have them answered live. If you can’t join us for the live broadcasts, you can catch-up by watching video recordings of the sessions and downloading the accompanying presentation slides at www.ism.org/webinars.

Subjects we have covered in our webinars include tax and legal rights for musicians, health and wellbeing for performers, child protection and safeguarding, setting tuition fees, and the national curriculum for music. Look out for details of forthcoming webinars in your e-news bulletins, Music Journal and the ISM website. If you have any suggestions for topics you would like us to cover in our webinar series, let us know by emailing membership@ism.org. We welcome your ideas and feedback.

Members’ Day Members’ day is designed to give members an opportunity to feed directly into the future plans of the ISM and help Council and members of the staff team understand more about the concerns and issues confronting members. A number of group discussions are followed by the Society’s AGM and Open Forum. We held our first Members’ Day at the Royal Overseas League in April 2014. A similar day will be held in 2015.

‘I’ve just attended the Child Protection Webinar, which I found most useful.’ ISM member

Distinguished Musician Award The ISM Distinguished Musician Award (DMA) was created in 1976 to recognise outstanding contributions to British musical life. The DMA is the highest honour that the ISM can bestow on a musician.

The DMA is awarded at most once each year, and can recognise a musician working in any field of the profession and recipients need not be members of the Society, or a UK national. The list of composers to receive the award has included Sir William Walton, Sir Michael Tippett, Witold Lutoslawski and Judith Weir, amongst others. Performers are naturally well represented in the list, from Sir Peter Pears to Sarah Connolly, via Julian Bream and Dame Janet Baker. Music educators have perhaps been less in the spotlight, but recently John Stephens received the award for his pioneering work. The very first DMA, however, was presented to a conductor, Sir Alexander Gibson, and an illustrious list of conductors (many ennobled) followed across the years, including Sir Charles Groves, Sir Simon Rattle, Norman Del Mar, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Charles Mackerras, Pierre Boulez Sir Mark Elder and most recently Sir Antonio Pappano. The 2013 recipient, Julian Lloyd Webber received the award for his many musical achievements and for his dedicated work in the field of music education. He received his DMA at the ISM Conference 2014, in partnership with Classic FM. The full list of ISM Distinguished Musician Award recipients can be found on our website at ism.org/awards/dma.

‘I am hugely honoured to accept this award. I have never wavered in my belief that music is for everyone and I will continue trying to bring it to as many people as possible.’ Julian Lloyd Webber, DMA 2013 Above: Julian Lloyd Webber Photo: Mark Woods-Nunn

In July 2014, The ISM-led Protect Music Education campaign secured £17m extra funding for music education in 2015/16 and the Government backed down on its recommendation that local authorities stop funding music education. 135 organisations are supporting the campaign as it moves forward to protect the value of music GCSE, AS and A level.
